Cupid's Hot Dogs in Canoga Park, has been around since I'm a little girl. I loved seeing that paper bag sitting on the table a couple of times a month, as a child, filled with a variety of dogs; each wrapped in yellow waxy paper. Cupid's Chili Dogs were always a treat for me and my siblings but as I grew up, I just didn't visit them to eat but I'd drive by a lot. Seeing the Cupid's sign has always made me smile regardless. This review is NOT ABOUT THE CANOGA PARK LOCATION AT ALL.
Today I was running some errands in the Chatsworth area and happened to look up while waiting for traffic to move. In a small little mall on Topanga Cyn Blvd., I spied a Cupid's Hot Dogs. Cool! I had no idea they had this location. The crew in the car were all hungry so I made an executive decision and we stopped to bring a bag of dogs home for lunch.
As far as ease of getting in and out of the place goes-- If you're not driving on the same side of the street as the restaurant, you have to drive to the nearest intersection to make a U-turn and come back around. Topanga Cyn Blvd., is very congested at any time of the day so this is not an "easy in and easy out" kind of place.
At the counter, I specifically asked if the dogs were steamed or grilled. While others may love a greasy dog with grill marks, I don't. The salt in the dog gets concentrated and they become very oily, which is too much for me and I end up with shot of Pepto Bismol. So, I asked the woman taking my order to please steam all the dogs, which she told me they do with the exception of the Chicago Dog--they grill those. With that info, I made it a point to please have that dog steamed for that order.
I'm a firm believer that if you've never stood in someone else's shoes, don't comment on what you don't know. Well, I have worked fast food in high school. At a hot dog place with a drive thru to be exact and that place was banging from 11am til midnight everyday. I know the drill, the order taking, the cleaning, the prep, the uniform, blah blah blah. I've done it. So this is why I'm writing a novella. I could do their job with my eyes closed.
The place wasn't busy--maybe five other people in the shop waiting on their orders but it seemed to take the two women at Cupids, 20 to 25 minutes to get the six dogs I ordered ready. I wanted to make sure they wrote which dogs were chili and which were not and realized the counter staff were not wrapping my dogs individually; they were sticking them in a box, one right next to the other with a piece of wax paper on top to hold them together. NO; I don't think so. The order was "to go" and how would those dogs stay up with a car load of people, other bags of crap accumulated on our excursion and a 20 minute drive home. I asked them to please wrap each dog individually and write on the paper which were chili, etc.
The Chicago dog was for me and I asked that it be steamed, not grilled. When I finally get to sit down and eat, I unwrapped the food and the dog IS GRILLED. WTF?? Come on.... I couldn't eat the damn thing so I gave it to someone else.
I called them to let them know that I placed a specific order outside of the everyday food they prepare and it wasn't that hard to accommodate but they didn't listen and I ended up paying $4.79 for food I couldn't eat. Of course, they told me to come back and they'll replace the hot dog. It's a 20 minute drive back to that location and I'll be damned if I'm wasting my time and gas to drive back there. It pays to listen to your customers.
I also found out that they are not affiliated with the Canoga Park location at all. No wonder the dining experience was shit. I wish I had known this was not really CUPID'S HOT DOGS; I would have never stopped at this place.
