Curra's Hyde Park - Review - Hyde Park - Austin - The Infatuation

"Curra’s biggest claim to fame is their invention of the avocado margarita—a cocktail that somehow makes us feel like what we’re drinking is at least a little bit healthy—but there’s also a pretty large menu of more classic drinks that contain surprisingly few avocados. The menu here leans Interior Mexican—with classics like cochinita pibil and pollo con mole—plus a few of their own takes on classics, like margarita key lime pie and churro cheesecakes. The original location of Curra’s Grill is in South Austin, just off of South Congress on Oltorf. photo credit: Holly Dirks" - Nicolai McCrary

Austin Mexican Restaurant Curra’s Grill Opens in Hyde Park - Eater Austin

"South Austin Mexican restaurant Curra’s Grill opened a second location in Hyde Park at 4215 Duval Street as of August 18. The menu is similar to its original one on East Oltorf: a span of Mexican dishes including cochinita pibil, chiles rellenos, moles, enchiladas, tacos, and breakfast dishes like huevos a la Mexicana and migas. The famed avocado margarita is also available, along with an array of cocktails, frozen drinks, beers, spirits, and aguas frescas. Curra’s Hyde Park hours are from 4 to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Takeout orders can be placed online and there is indoor dine-in service." - Nadia Chaudhury

Restaurant Takeout and Delivery Recommendations From Eater Austin Editors - Eater Austin

"For cake: I know, I know: I’m a bad native Austinite for never trying Mother’s Cafe until now. The (vegan!) Belgian chocolate cake completely made my week. The silky, light chocolate frosting atop dewy, coffee-kissed cake fulfilled my chocolate cravings and then some. I can’t wait to work my way through the whole dessert menu. Pickup orders can be placed over the phone, and there are Grubhub and Favor deliveries too." - Erin Russell

Google
This place is really pretty, it has a Mexican vibe. The margarita was delicious and about $12. There is a tv screen to watch the game and big tables for large groups. I would recommend the pastor enchiladas and the spicy margarita.

Google
The Oaxaca coffee is addictive. I am tempted to go back every day for that wonderful but simple brew. Great neighborhood breakfast spot. The borracha salsa is perfection on you. Real fast items. I loved a modified Jojo plate ( substitute real chorizo for vegan) with the borracha. The Ali May plate is fantastic too. They have cucumbers for dipping if you need a low carb option to enjoy your queso. Perfect sleepy neighborhood spot that uou should not sleep on.

Enjoyed a great happy hour. Food was good and reasonably priced. Not a fan of the tv’s in the dining room. Good guacamole and queso. My shrimp dish was good but not very flavorful. The enchiladas were really good

Google
Curra’s was as amazing as always, and I love your new Hyde Park location! We forgot to take pictures because Roseann’s youngest was in a very energetic sort of baby mood. But as usual, Curra’s was a great place fie reconnecting with old friends over amazing food & drinks, with friendly service.

Google
We hosted a baby shower for about 60 guests. The staff was superb! They went above and beyond to ensure we had everything we needed. They quickly responded to every request we made. The food was fresh, hot and very tasty! If I lived in Austin, I’d be a regular customer! Thank you George and the entire staff for helping make this such a joyful memory!

Yelp
Such a good spot in Hyde Park! Their shrimp quesadillas are so good. Enchiladas are okay too. Amazing margaritas and great deal during happy hour! The prickly pear one is amazing. Host and servers were so friendly. Perfect patio for summer too!!

Yelp
We have visited the Oltorf location a couple time in the past, but its a drive for us coming from Manor....I was excited a couple years back when this place opened, but not excited to see the late hours they ran, but coming across an IG post from a fellow foodie with a current photo of a Sunday brunch shot, the hunt was back on. The place is really clean, exciting decor and a decent amount of parking. I never realized how many food spots are just on that corner. Service was just "ok" as our server seemed absent for the most part...would have been nice to get a second glass of water....and we had to ask another waitress for our check after waiting 15 minutes for ours to come back...We started with the Salsa Sampler, which includes 8...yes 8 different ones to try....All were very good and the Mole was the most interesting one and I kept going back to that. Queso is a solid win for sure, does come with a scoop of Guac, which the wife Does not like, but she carefully works her way around it...I make it a point to eat that first. Wife went with the Enchiladas con Chile Colorado...absolutely loved it...anything with Guajillo in it is a win for us...sides were the rice...very tasty by the way and Fideo which was light and its nice to have other options for a side. I went with the Enchiladas Curras...Carne was tender, great sauce...Both of our dishes were cheese enchilada based, and they were packed...most we have had are flat upon arrival to the table...we both agreed the rice, yet unassuming looking tasted great....Black beans were on point. Overall a great visit and we will most definitely be back.

Yelp
I really enjoyed eating dinner here for the 1st time a few nights ago. I'm pretty picky with my margaritas but they were pretty good here! I ordered the blood orange and my boyfriend ordered the cucumber flavor. We also ordered the guacamole to share. It was good! I liked the chips that came with the salsa better than the ones that came with the guac. The staff was very attentive. Our waitress apologized for the "wait" but it was only like 2 minutes. She was very nice and helpful. I loved that this restaurant is big. We were able to walk-in and get a table right away. Parking wasn't the best but we just found a spot in the street and made it work. I'm excited to visit here again soon!

Yelp
Awesome drinks and food and overall vibe. Service was attentive and speedy. I love the neighborhood. The avocado margargarita thing is as good as hyped. Portions are large. My wife is half Honduran and having spent years there really appreciates some authenticity and reall enjoyed her sopa. We'll be back for sure. A few spaces out front sonot much parking, but easy enough to park on street and the neighborhood is nice to walk in... 5 stars.

Yelp
2nd time here. Came here for happy hour and the famous avocado margarita. Very mild on the avocado flavor but nice and creamy like a smoothie. They also have $8 ceviche on happy hour which is nice and zesty and $5 queso to go with your complimentary chips and salsa. Parking lot is small but you can park in the neighborhood if it's too busy. It was starting to fill up when we left. Happy hour prices are fair. 4 drinks and 1 ceviche was $44. They also have allergy friendly menu items and a small patio for your 4 legged friends.

Yelp
Insanely expensive and extremely lackluster. + Avocado margarita. Do not get this. It's viscous, and has a strange "off" taste from the avocado. No one wants a margarita where chunks get stuck in your teeth. + Nothing to recommend here among the food options. Enchiladas and stew both tasted old, and were strangely bland. Prices are insane, the food is not good enough to justify them.

Yelp
As much as I hate to admit this, when it comes to central Austin neighborhoods, it's easier to find that iconic sit-down/ table service/ margarita/ salsa & queso experience SOUTH of the river. Fortunately, the Austin Food Gods delivered a Curra's location in Hyde Park a few years ago. It's taken me a while to Yelp about Curra's Hyde Park because it's complicated. Let me count the ways. 1. Obviously this is not the original Curra's location, and as thankful that I am that it exists, nothing compares. 2. I'm a native Austinite. I will always miss Mother's. 3. Speaking of Mother's, I'm so confused about the back room at this location. Why didn't Curra's stick to the garden room theme? It would totally work with the new Curra's decor. Just saying. 4. I love Julio's. Putting a Curra's across the street just isn't fair what with its full bar, extensive menu that's not just based on roasted chicken and tacos, etc... All of that nonsense aside, Curra's Hyde Park is awesome! The specialty cocktails are very actually SPECIAL, and sometimes they even come with a tiny Loteria card attached to the glass with a tiny wooden clothespin. The food is great just like the original location like those red corn tortillas and refried black beans that cannot be beat! Finally, I must applaud ownership for ensuring that this newer location in Hyde Park ALSO has at least one thought-provoking WTF mural to enjoy. The main event mural in the front entrance part of the restaurant definitely has a theme. Go check it out and see if you can figure it out!

Yelp
Had an amazing time at Curra's Happy Hour. They have amazing deals. My favorite was the ceviche, only $8 during Happy Hour. The vibe is good, they have beautiful murals inside. A good patio. Full bar. Definitely coming back soon!

Yelp
Was walking through the neighborhood and saw the sign for avacado margs so had to stop and try it. Sat outside in the little patio and was helped pretty quickly. There are two sizes of margs so we got the bigger if the 2. Really yummy and quite boozy. Would come back to try their food and have another marg

Yelp
The food and drinks were amazing! Will definitely go back. You don't want to miss this place!

Yelp
LOVE LOVE LOVE Curra's! We come here pretty regularly and it has yet to disappoint. This is a no reservation spot so plan to come early or you might have a bit of a wait. The bar area is pretty big, though, so if you do have a wait then grab one of their famous avocado margaritas and relax. There is usually plenty of parking at the restaurant or on the street in the neighborhood; we've never had a problem. The service is always prompt and attentive without you feeling rushed. Now, to the food. I have two words.... Duck.Mole. Just try it, promise, it's fantastic. This is not your standard texmex joint where everything tastes pretty much the same just in a different shape. They have delicious salsa, sauces, fresh fish, house made corn tortillas, and unique choices. Our goal is to come back enough times that we can try the whole menu. So, that being said, if you want fun, friendly, easy, and delicious this is your spot. Happy eating!
google avatar

Chris P.

Yelp
Great option for fresh authentic Mexican. I would say the food pricing and quality is on par with Licha's in East Austin but without the long wait times. Even on a weekend, we were waiting 20-30 minutes max. Overall, can't go wrong with the menu from fish tacos to their soups. Very laid back spot if you want a less hectic atmosphere this is the place. Also, pretty reasonably priced marg pitchers if you're with a a few people.

Yelp
UPDATE: Curra's Hyde Park has steadily improved since it opened, and almost none of my previous criticisms is true now. They've abandoned Casamigos as their house tequila (just say "no" to artificial sweeteners!), they've updated their menu, and have gotten rid of the stale pecans (in fact I don't think they have that sauce any more at all!), and we find ourselves returning again and again to a place that is now part of our comfort zone, offering tasty quality food and drinks in an unpretentious and welcoming atmosphere with excellent service. Now--please open one in Pflugerville--we've moved out of Hyde Park!

Yelp
Curra's has all the things. Good setting that is timeless, friendly people that care about your service, and are very present for you, all the favorite foods you want, I truly love being here, and go often. Great food, a neighborhood, favorite. I couldn't believe I hadn't shown love earlier than now, wanted to put this up just for support to the great people at Curra's.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this spot after we couldn't find parking at another restaurant. We showed up on a Friday evening and were seated immediately. I liked that they were playing Bad Bunny lol. I originally asked for the Aguachiles but our waiter came back to tell us it wasn't available to which I ended up choosing the Pescado al Mojo de Ajo and I am glad I did. The fish was savory and light and I loved that it was served with veggies and lettuce. My boyfriend ordered the fajitas and they were pretty good. We came in with zero expectations and were pleased and it's worth it compared to the overhyped Tex-Mex places in downtown.
google avatar

Andrew L.

Yelp
Came here for dinner on a Saturday evening. They had a few open tables outside and plenty of indoor seating available, so I wouldn't be too concerned with wait time. I added this spot to my list to try the avocado margharita. On that alone I thought it was worth the visit. The avocado aspect of it was much more a texture than flavor thing. It came out super creamy and the primary taste I got was lime. For a margharita it was fairly light on the alcohol, with that and it being on the heavier side, I don't recommend trying to get much of a buzz just on these. Even taking the margharita out of the equation, we had a very good experience here! The menu has a nice variety of Tex Mex options and they're pretty open to customization. I was able to have my enchiladas split with two toppings and my partner was able to add vegan chorizo to her's even though it was not listed as a protein option. I had the chicken enchildas with mole and pasilla (black salsa) along with beans and rice with bananas added. The mole was solid, nothing to write home about but I think if you've never had mole before this is a very approachable version of it, and if you've had it before this won't leave you dissapointed. I really liked the pasilla, it had the nice smokey flavor I was looking for. It came topped with cheese, which actually took away from the salsa a little bit. If I were to come back I'd definitely ask for no cheese on that one, as it toned down the salsa a bit too much. I recommend paying the extra dollar to go for banana rice. When it first came out the couple of banana slices looked a little sad on my rice, but it really does add a lot and I can't recall seeing that as an option elsewhere in town. Overall, I think this a strong repeat Tex Mex spot if you live near the area in Austin. It's nothing ground breaking, so I wouldn't advise you to go out of your way for, whether you're visiting town or live in Austin a decent distance away

Yelp
Mothers was my austin staple back in the day so it made me a lil sad to go back to what overtook the building. The drinks here are for sure the best part- they are strong and delicious. The food was good but not great and was a bit pricey. This would be a good spot for an after work happy hour. Will come back to drink, to eat I don't know.

Yelp
This review is primarily about the pricing and my experience ordering from the restaurant. The food is good and the restaurant itself is nice. I was excited to hear that Curra's opened a location close to my house so I decided to order takeout for my family. I was surprised that the price of the fajitas entree was $30, but I assumed that given the price it would probably serve two people. Just to be safe I called the restaurant to ask. I was hung up on three times and never got an answer. I decided to go ahead and order since Curra's has a good reputation. The $30 fajitas is basically two small tacos. So I got $100 of food that I thought would serve 6 people and it was barely enough for 3 people. Disappointing to say the least. The only redeeming factor is that the food is tasty. Hopefully someone from management gets this feedback. This is not $30 worth of food. This is two tacos.

Yelp
I went for happy hour and had some tasty frozen beverages. There's several food and drink items on the happy hour menu. The prices for each item was great! Friendly staff and quick service!

Tati L.

Yelp
The service was amazing ! My waitress was super sweet and nice however, the food was kinda disappointing. I ordered tacos and the lemons I got were bigger than the tacos i ordered... The cheese was gross tasted like ez-melt cheese supper thick tasted like a box... the rest of the food was just disappointing . I think the menu needs a little update.

Yelp
Spent an Saturday afternoon here with my mom and we had the best time. The restaurant is super spacious and has a couple tables outside as well. We had to have the avocado margaritas and while the name can make you a bit weary, they are a MUST try! We started with the regular ceviche (we wanted the tuna one, but they were out) and the queso flameado...I think it's my new favorite food. It was delicious, my mom and I were literally fighting over who got the last bite. We ordered the jalapeño biznezz drink and it was the perfect combo of spicy and delicious..would recommend to anyone of all spice levels! Our server was kind, attentive and patient with our butchering of some words. I live close so I will be back many more times to come!
google avatar

Lauren A.

Yelp
RIP Mother's, but I'm happy another Austin institution could take over this space. Great Mexican and Tex Mex, love the enchiladas and the wide variety of margaritas. Try the avocado marg. They have excellent breakfast too and a small patio for people watching on Duval.

Sally V.

Yelp
The rice and beans tasted like soap. I will not return here, not worth the money either

Yelp
You. Must. Check. Out. Curra's. I don't give out 5 stars that often but Curra's definitely gets it from me! We were seated in a reasonable amount of time, all of the staff we interacted with were very friendly, especially our waiter. The food was *chefs kiss* delicious (so good, I forgot to snap a picture) and there were many vegetarian friendly options. Curra's is "Home of the avocado margarita" - I had never had that before and it was really good! Love this addition to Hyde Park and can't wait to come back!

Yelp
Curra's has its own distinct niche in Austin's Tex-Mex restaurants. Given that there are 13,411 Tex-Mex restaurants in Austin - and that is just counting those north of the river, Having your own niche is quite the feat. * * * Curra's gets the prize for best artwork on the walls. I don't mean paintings hanging in a frame. I mean the whole wall painted, top to bottom. Whoever the artist is should get free Curra's food for the rest of his life. * * * Curra serves a hotter salsa with chips and dips than Austin people are used to. While I didn't particularly like the salsa in question (its called the "Red Salsa" at Curra's), I did have to give points for originality and style. They do a CHIPOTLE salsa to beat the band. I poured the Chipotle Salsa on just about everything. I wouldn't have poured it on a three leches cake, But it was dynamite on everything else. * * * Chips are particularly flavorful. Frankly, you don't even need dip with these babies. These have a warm rich taste all their own. * * * Chicken burrito which is normally a pretty dull dish Is just wonderful here. While I was playing constantly with dumping Chipotle Salsa on top, The bare naked burrito didn't need any help at all. Put that on the list with the chips for just having completely fine native flavor. * * * Now here comes the Headline Story. Sit Down. Stay Calm. Are you ready for this? * * * * * My wife who absolutely hates Mexican food absolutely adored Curra's. That is harder to do than getting her to like 1980's Hair Bands or Harley Davidson Motorcycles. She is vegetarian and does not eat cheese. The token concessions to vegans at real Mexican restaurants leave her cold. The imitation Mexican food at vegetarian restaurants leaves her even colder. She gives ninety-nine thumbs-ups to Curra's Hyde Park. What is the good stuff for her? a) She thinks the house green salsa is absolutely super. She normally hates salsa. b) She thought the Curras Caviar was the most interesting Mexican appetizer she had had in years. c) She absolutely adored the Vegetarian Enchiladas that were full of both vegetables and flavor. This is a woman who has forced herself to down more mediocre vegetarian enchiladas than anyone should have to eat in a lifetime. After years of just tolerating the one dubious enchilada she can have ... She found one that is actually wonderful. It was like finding the right pair of shoes after a decade of having your feet slide around shoes that were too big or having your feet pinched by shoes that were too small. * * * Samuel C the omnivore thinks this is a solid interesting place. His wife thinks this is the only decent Mexican restaurant she has eaten at in Texas, period. With those endorsements, you really ought to check this place out.

vic c.

Yelp
I'm not one to leave bad reviews usually, but the food here was completely inedible. My boyfriend ordered the pescado and I ordered the chicken chipotle, both dishes had very obviously canned tomato sauce dumped all over causing them to taste the same: bland except for the taste of sweet acidic tomatoes. The rice lacked any flavor and I couldn't even finish one taco. The waitress had decent service but didn't question why we were leaving with full plates but not wanting to-go boxes. It seems like the positive reviews are for the drinks so if you want somewhere to be drunk but if you actually enjoy eating food that's edible I don't recommend this spot, the food truck in the shell gas station down the street is leagues better than here for about 1/3 of the price.

Yelp
We live in the neighborhood and I love having Curra's as a nearby restaurant. I love their happy hour and their regular menu. The service is excellent. Overall, delicious Mexican food. Lots of choices.

Yelp
Always great food! One of our favorite "GO TO" Places in Austin. Their Avacado Margarita is "One-of -a-kind"!

Yelp
Today I had a late lunch at Curra's and it was lovely. I was especially impressed by our server, Elizabeth, who was amazing. She is attentive, friendly and helpful. I had the grilled chicken with cheese, it was good.

Yelp
Had the most delicious lunch here today. The restaurant itself is decorated in a fun Mexican theme, even the bathrooms! We had a friendly greeting as we walked in & got an indoor window seat. Chandler, our waiter, (who was marvelous btw) was quick to take our order. Everything looked so yummy but we knew we had to try their famous avocado margarita right away. It's definitely a new favorite of mine! We ordered the queso flameado first. Oh my! I've been reading a lot about different quesos and this was every bit of yumminess I was expecting. We also got the ceviche. We wanted the ceviche de autn, but they were out. It was good. I bet the other one is better. We ordered the tacos al pastor. We were so full already that we couldn't eat them, but took them home and are excited to try them later. We finished with one more drink, jalapeño biznezz. Tasted exactly like a perfectly made jalapeño margarita. I'm looking forward to trying something different the next time I go!

Michelle E.

Yelp
Have lived in the area for a while and always wanted to come try Curra's... so glad I finally did! We got there at 9pm and were seated right away. Complementary chips and salsa were SO good! just the right amount of crunch, saltiness, and spice. Better than most other places IMO. Started off with the avocado margarita, which I was hesitant about, but it was a very pleasant surprise. Almost like a spiked creamy smoothie. It was not too sweet but had a dessert feel to it. So tasty and refreshing. Our server recommended the Pescado al Mojo de Ajo, and it is by far one of the best dishes I've ever had! So full of flavor and did not leave that fishy taste behind at all. Definitely would get it again. My partner had the pollo con mole, and he was pleased with his dish as well, but he loved my fish too. The rice on both dishes was very good and felt authentically Mexican. Huge portions, just fyi! Left super full. Didn't catch our waiter's name but he was nice and attentive. Food came out at a reasonable time. It's a little dark in the restaurant but besides that it's a pretty chill vibe, could dress up or down. Overall had a great time and definitely coming back to try other dishes!

Yelp
Home of the Avocado Margarita Creamy but light Liked it, don't love it Service was great, and food was good for the price. It was good but not great!

Jason O.

Yelp
Service fee gouge: Be warned. There's a 10% "To Go's" charge on call-in takeout orders. Where does the money go? Who knows? It's not noted on the menu, shows up after you place your order. There's an additional spot on the receipt for tips. Happy to tip a staffer reasonably on a takeout order, but 10% mandatory for taking an order and handing me a bag ain't it. Especially as the price of the order goes up. And again, who knows if any of it goes to the worker? Hate to ding a local joint, but they're dinging consumers with hidden charges that add up quickly and need to be called out. Food is fine, just don't treat your customers like you're Ticketmaster.
google avatar

Clint S.

Yelp
Had a great time last night and enjoyed our dinner of nachos with chicken and a gorgeous snapper ceviche. Also had some equally delicious spicy jalapeño margaritas.
google avatar

Mia B.

Yelp
Everything we ordered was disappointing. It's more Tex-mex than authentic mexican. We ordered each type of taco - the carnitas were dry, the veggie one was also mediocre. The service was good though and there was plenty of seating.

Kevin B.

Yelp
High prices on low quality inauthentic food. Our service was pretty good, and we enjoyed the drinks, but all of the food was very bad. The blackened fish tacos were actually inedible. If you're thinking of going Curra's I'd highly recommend just walking directly across the street to Julio's for much better food at lower prices.

Yelp
During our "self guided" taco tour of Austin during a weekend Sisters trip, we were lucky enough to stumble upon this gem. Best fish taco EVER. Fabulous ceviche and had the exquisite avocado margarita for desert.

Lee W.

Yelp
Service is great. Lovely decor. The food is wonderful and 'complex.' Gotta try the mole!
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious molé. Nice avocado margaritas. Wonderful "other" margaritas. Several vegetarian options. A friendly attentive staff. Some outdoor seating. An extra star for making we want to go right now just thinking about it.

Yelp
This is a local spot so I walked over on a Friday night. Got seated pretty quick and the food was quite good. My server was Mia most of the time but otherwise good experience.
google avatar

Paola L.

Yelp
I've done the full tour de Al pastor tacos in Austin and Curras is definitely in the top 3! It has so much flavor and if you're going big the enchiladas are so worth it. They also have their famous avocado margarita that's so creamy and refreshing, it'll surpass all expectation of what it is. The staff is super friendly and the owner is always in and always in a good mood making it an experience to never forget.

Yelp
The waitress Lucy was friendly and checked back with my table frequently. Ordered mushroom quesadillas and the prickly pear margarita, both were delicious!

We went there on Sunday and got food poisoning. it was pretty scary. The rice smelled like it was off. It smelled bitter. But still ate it and I got super sick With the stomach flu due to food poisoning.

Yelp
Very overpriced Mexican food. I'm from Corpus so I know the flavor standards. Rice was a disgrace. We ordered two to-go margaritas that were like $13 each in a 16 oz plastic cup, (gimme that 32oz If you're going break my bank like that! Don't get me wrong the vibe is great and we live in Hyde Park so we understand the allure, but come on. If you want good Mexican food just go somewhere else where you can trust it's legimately cooked and flavored back there.

Yelp
Love this sister restaurant to the south location! Street Tacos pastor are fire with homemade blue corn tortillas. Definitely stop by this location if you are in Hyde park area. Can't go wrong with this place!!! Frozen dot maragarita with jalapeñyo biznezz exceeded expectations!

Yelp
Second time here and have had great service! Oli (?) was an amazing waitress. No wait time, even in a Friday night. Parking looks semi easy. Rita's are strong. Check their website for daily specials.

Yelp
I'm excited to have Curra's a lot closer to my house! They beautifully transformed the old Mother's into Mexican style. Our server got very busy during our stay, but she remained extremely friendly and helpful. All of the other servers who tended to us were great. Skinny margarita was just right. Elote was brilliant. One star off for entrees - chicken mole enchiladas and veggie relleno - they were both very salty. I ate every bite of my enchiladas, but their authentic mole sauce has so many great flavors - it's a shame to overwhelm it. I'll be back!!
