Curry King - Review - Upper West Side - New York - The Infatuation

"Curry King has been operating from noon to midnight for years, in large part serving cab drivers on a lunch or dinner break. Come here and check out the lineup of their vegetable stews, fried snacks, and tandoori meat - which changes somewhat every day. The thing that always remains, though, is the $6 vegetarian lunch special where you can get dal, salad, rice, and a vegetarian entree. No matter what, we recommend ordering the garlic naan that's baked fresh in the back and served piping hot on a paper plate. It’s as thick as it is fluffy, and the size of an analog clock you’d find on a classroom wall. photo credit: David Lee Food Rundown photo credit: David Lee Garlic Naan Fluffy, hot, and half-an-inch thick, this is one of the puffier versions of garlic naan we’ve tasted. It takes a few minutes to prepare in the kitchen, which is how you know it’s fresh. Bhindi Masala This is our favorite vegetarian entree to order with the $6 lunch special. Even if you’re choosing a meat route, we still recommend getting a small side of okra anyways. The star-shaped okra pods stay firm and chewy despite being sautéed with a ton of warming spices, onions, tomatoes, and ginger. photo credit: David Lee Chicken Curry Curry King’s chicken falls right off its bone, as if the bird is deeply unsatisfied with its own body. There’s a special where you can get this curry chicken, rice, and sides for $8. If that’s not appealing for lunch on a random Tuesday, we’re not sure what would be. Samosa Chaat Piled high with cut-up samosas, masala chickpeas, a creamy yogurt sauce, biting raw onions, sweet chutney, and green chilis. Eat it for breakfast, eat it at 11pm. As far as we’re concerned, there is no bad time to eat something this simultaneously spicy and cooling. photo credit: David Lee Tandoori Meats On top of the counter, you’ll see a pile of skewered chicken, beef, lamb, and goat. We always get chicken (they have boneless, herb-flecked ground seekh kebab, or a whole chicken leg), which is reliably tender and tastes a bit like its yogurt marinade." - Hannah Albertine

Honestly, Curry King is one of the best restaurants in Manhattan. At first, I was curious about the food they serve, as I had never before tasted international food from countries like Pakistan and Bangladesh, although I am familiar with Indian food, which tastes delicious, of course. When I tried the food at Curry King - OH my God! Absolutely amazing! I love this food!!! I am extremely meticulous and careful about what foods I consume, as I care about my health. The food at Curry King moves very fast. It is clean, fresh, healthy, and super delicious. It is not too hot even though it's spicy. They are nice responsible persons working at the restaurant. I highly recommend Curry King and give it 5 out of 5 stars. The food is colorful and well cooked daily. I am confident about eating there because I know the food is fresh. They even have a large variety of dishes to choose from. Although the place is small, I've noticed that many customers eat there, including NYC residents, taxi drivers, students, and tourists. Many customers, including myself, like to order takeout. I love the additional pita bread that is included with the meal. The prices are fair judging by today's food quality standards and inflationary economy as well as the actual quality and size of the meal. They give you a decent amount of food that fills your stomach. It's definitely worth it. Expect to pay an average of about $12 to $15 per meal. Sometimes, when I enter Curry King, my mouth waters and mind saviors the various lovely dishes seen through the glass windows of the counter. I wish I could taste them all!!! I really do. Often I order 2 meals to go, because I like to eat it the next day as well. As noted above, the staff are friendly, professional, and courteous. They dispatch orders quickly or within 2-5 minutes. Overall, Curry King has become my number one 1 best restaurant, and I highly recommend it. I will update my review soon with new photos and videos. Thanks and happiness. Eat healthy and enjoy life.

Google
Good authentic Pakistani food, large selection of dishes that changes on a daily basis in addition to different naans, roti's, appetizers, BBQ's, teas & dessert's that are available daily. Small seating area. More of a face paced spot like most of the traditional Pakistani restaurant in the NYC area. Prices are on par with the neighborhood.

Google
They put up the special price sign outside.I ate chicken curry and naan bread. They charged me 12$.Which was listed on the outside for 9.99$. And the woman who works at night has very bad behavior. If such employees are in the store, the owner will lose customers. And food quality was very bad.

Duncan Dee

Google
For the price, solid chicken tikka and curry chicken. The rice is good and the veggie selection well spiced. Definitely worthwhile.

Google
I had oxtail curry and goat/lamb tikka masala. I ordered them for delivery. The curry has more oil than spices and more bones than meat. This is probably absolutely rock bottom for curry. If you look at my attached photo, I think I had like 3 bites of meat(I mixed the two curry portions) and everything else is bones. Also note the swimming pool of oil at the top. Meat is bland too.

Google
There’s a lot going on here, and it’s all pretty good. Indian, Pakistani, Halal, Chinese, Bangladeshi. I don’t even know where to begin.

Jack Bryan

Google
Given the portion size, I thought we would have leftovers. After the first bite, I knew that we would not. The fresh-baked naan and delicious curry alone make up for the lack of ambience. The setup is simple: a few tables inside where you can sit after ordering from a counter and selecting from premade dishes. While it’s not the setting for a fancy dinner, it’s perfect for a satisfying, affordable meal or quick takeout.

Google
They serve Pakistani, East Indian and Bangladeshi food. Very yummy vegetarian food that’s seasoned just right. Theirs always a large Indian crowd eating in here and that’s also a indication that’s the foods highly rated. I take frequent lunch breaks here when I’m in the area.

Yelp
Not sure what I ate honestly but it was good. Know 1 dish had chicken. 1 was cold veggies like eggplant and potatoes and peas. The saffron rice was excellent! 2 large pieces of chicken inside. The bread was pipping hot! This is called the managers special. Wait for it $6! Yes for all this food. The staff was very friendly. They are open very early to very late. A nice neighborhood family establishment!

Yelp
This place should be closed for health hazards. I ordered via too good to go yesterday. Then I had food poisoning last night and this morning I still feel sick. My head and stomach both hurts

Yelp
Terrible service - I ordered three curry dishes for delivery and waited four hours. The money came out of my account, so I called Curry King who claimed they never received it, in spite of getting an order confirmation. After calling my bank and clearing it up with them, I called them directly to make a new order and they did not pick up.

Yelp
I like this place. Friendly service with tasty food. Grilled meats look incredible. Very fresh breads! Nicely seasoned rice. Looking forward to trying more food from here. I also appreciate the meticulously packaged food. They could benefit from having leakproof containers, but the plastic wrap really helps! I came here a second time and ordered chicken keema, which was delicious (and spicy!) (I wasn't sure about this before ordering, but the guy who came in after me ordered an entire plate of it! Now I know why!)

Yelp
I ordered from this place a few times thinking they were just having off days. There was a discrepancy in portion all 3 times. The food tasted horrible and was expensive for what it was. I got chicken tikka masala and it came with 5 chunks of chicken and garlic naan but no rice. It was $27 on DoorDash which didn't include fees because I picked it up. The "restaurant" if you could call it that was dirty inside with food that looked like it had been sitting around for days. Don't order from here unless you want to be disappointed.

Amit B.

Yelp
I have been going there multiple times for lunch the past few weeks and the food has been fresh and good
google avatar

Richard B.

Yelp
Food was ok but the place is very dirty and they charged me $18 for a lunch special with an extra side of bread. I didn't realize the place I was looking for was right across the street. Don't come to this one.

Yelp
Woah. This is one of the best lamb dishes I have ever had. Tender, flavorful, fall off the bone deliciousness. You could suck the marrow out of the bones. Not to mention it was steaming hot. The garlic naan was also incredible, hot, airy and a strong garlic flavor. Also, I asked about this little ball shaped dish, which was a desert and she gave me one to try - which was so nice. Highly recommended and will definitely go back!

Kabeer M.

Yelp
The food is okay but they do not change the meat. They keep the cooked food Infront to insure everyone will buy but it's old. I currently was exposed to food poisoning because they fail to refreshing the food. I can't get Food Health department on the phone. If someone who know had the same issue please direct it to health and mental hygiene.... The guys in the back give you molded garlic naan bread they don't sanitize the counter. I wouldn't suggest it I was a customer for a few months until I realized all time I was going through servere stomach viruses. Please can some call or report this issue.. Don't take heed and find out for yourself

Yelp
Great food , nice small business authentic and original vibe . Perfect portions , the price is very good . Perfect south Asian food . You're not going to regret it . Highly recommend.

Yelp
I discovered this place by accident, I ordered take out and thought the chicken was fresh and delicious and that the naan that came with it was perfect. The chicken was wrapped unusually carefully and for once, a dish with sauce did not spill. I very much appreciated not opening a bag to find a mess This is a tiny restaurant , full of hard working, serious people and I think some of the reviews are really mean-spirited. Running a small neighborhood restaurant is not easy and I wish people would be reasonable when they weigh what a small place can do against big fancy restaurants and chains. Thank you Curry King for a delicious, reasonably priced dinner. I will be back.

Yelp
TLDR: decent food at decent prices but nothing special A few weeks ago, I ordered through UberEats and got two lamb chop combos for 20$ each. The meal took around one hour to get to my place (UES), but that's expected given the long distance from the restaurant. And best of all, they packaged the meat very well- the rice was a bit cold by the time it got here, but the saran wrapping on the lamb kept it piping hot. Now onto the food itself- the star of the show was very good. The meat definitely beat my expectations, as it was very well seasoned while being juicy and tender on the inside/charred on the outside. Furthermore, they didn't skip out on meat quantity- I got three big lamb chops that certainly filled me up. However, the rest of the meal was pretty average- the salad was pretty basic (I didn't really dig the mint/coriander chutney they included) and the rice was fairly plain. Verdict: don't go out of your way, but this isn't a bad choice if you're in the area

Yelp
This food is disgraceful and disgusting garbage. You sent me an order of lamb/goat tiki masala that had a half-inch layer of transparent oil on top of it which I had to pour into my sink. The meat or the sauce underneath was rancid and bitter. And I had to throw it out after a few bites. The naan bread you sent was doughy and uncooked in the middle. And I actually feel sick right now. You should seriously be visited by the NYC Department of Health. And I might just give them a call after this order. Disgusting... utterly disgusting.

Cecil G.

Yelp
This the worst chicken ever. I ordered off of door dash. What a waste. Don't waste your money

Yelp
I skimmed through the reviews and thought it strange that one said it "smells bad." I grew up on the aromas and smooth, creamy texture of Naan-N-Curry, so I initially interpreted it as, too strong in smell for the average non-Asian palate. I was wrong. The chicken tikka masala "sauce" was watery with scattered colloidal chunks. I could forgive it for not being spicy, as spicy food in Manhattan is hard to come by. Not only was it flavorless, it smelled like unwiped ass. NO INDIAN FOOD SHOULD SMELL LIKE UNWIPED ASS. The chicken saag was equally as flavorless, but at least it didn't smell terrible. I also found it suspicious that it was open until 4am. Was it to for clientele of overnight drivers? No, I want to think it is to get rid of the pre-cooked unsold foods, but even then, this is not a sufficient reason. I did give stars for packaging and the absence of ketchup in the curry. Many of the Indian places I've tried in Manhattan have a strong ketchup taste to their CTM, so I appreciate that. After seeing a Chicago Uber Eats worker titrate some of the food in a separate container and then re-staple for delivery, I've began to appreciate copious packaging (plastic wrap everything) of this place. How could I have taken these for granted from being from the Bay? I just can't justify the price of flavorless, un-aromatic Indian food. I wouldn't reorder from here, and I will keep hoping that proudly (not changing for the local, spice-averse palate) authentic places open in Manhattan.

Yelp
I'm a fan of chicken tiki masala, and I was hoping to get a good meal out of this place. I ordered food via UberEats, and waited for 30 minutes to get my food. I specifically ordered it very spicy, and emphasized this when placing the order. I was sadly disappointed. The food was not spicy at all. And the taste was off. I had some of the chicken pieces, as well as the rice. But the taste was not good, and the aftertaste was worse. I actually felt like gagging after, so I tossed the leftover rather than save them for a future meal. These folks need to up their game. If they advertise their food as spicy, or offer that option when ordering, they need to comply with that. Someone here was not paying attention to detail when putting my order together. I can't say that I'll be ordering from here again, as there are far better options when it comes to chicken tiki masala. Get it together, people!

Yelp
Authentic Pakistani food on the upper west side. Great tasting food, with really good selection of different dishes. The menu changes everyday, they have trays of food ready made. Everything from Biryani, Nihari, haleem, daal, kebabs etc and even desserts like kheer, gulab jammin & ras Malai. Everything is really good. I highly recommend this place.
google avatar

Nami N.

Yelp
We ordered combo (Rice, beef curry & veggies) and Chicken Behari Kabab with Fresh Salad. It was no good. First, salad was not fresh. Second, chicken was uncooked, we got a stomach pain when we were eating.... I complained about chicken. And asked bill. Owner didn't remembered our order. We ordered only each 1 combo and 1 chicken kabob but I think they charged 2 of combo. Of course they didn't change chicken kabob. Just 1 star place for me
google avatar

Vinay S.

Yelp
A hole in the wall Indian spot with home cooked dishes that make it easier to digest and fair prices for specials. $12 a dish. 3.75/5 stars as a lunch spot.
google avatar

Suzana R.

Yelp
Goat chops were seasoned and cooked to pure perfection! Best tandoori style chop I've ever had!!!
google avatar

Yelp
I was on my way to Doaba Deli across the street for my favorite parathas in Manhattan, made by the store's Amritsari owners. Unfortunately, a sign indicates they are temporarily closed for a family emergency (I hope everything is OK), so I decided to come across the street to Curry King. Urdu on the facade suggests Pakistani ownership, although the woman at the counter only spoke Bengali.. In either case, the chai was good, but the aloo paratha was just vaise-vaise (mediocre). It was thickly stuffed with aloo mash that was well seasoned and flavorful, but a bit too thick, even with some potato skin still left on. I can't say I was the biggest fan.

Nick K.

Yelp
The pictures show white rice but they sent brown rice full of dried peas. The chicken tika masala was so oily it diffused through the double wrapped container and its hard to say there even is "masala"... the chicken is basically just stained with color and the only thing you could dip your naan in was literal oil. There's a reason this place has 2.5 stars. Listen to these comments, they're a warning. Oh also, ordering this on Uber eats, after reading the reviews we tried to cancel and they tried to charge us the same amount that the food cost. Would never eat here again.
google avatar

Robin V.

Yelp
Had an awful experience my food took over an hour to arrive and it was delivered to the wrong address via Uber eats. The chicken curry of my order was missing so all there is to review is the goat tikka, and if you want a review just look at what i got a nice bowl of oil and Seems I'm missing the tikka as well. Yeah I'm going to report this whole debacle to Uber and let you decide for yourself if it's worth even considering this.
google avatar

Alfredo D.

Yelp
After leaving them 5 stars I now have to leave 1 star. I ordered and they literally got the ENTIRE order wrong. Not even the wrong order... They forgot to include rice in a menu item that requires rice to be eaten! (Haleem chicken), sent watery rice pudding instead of Halwa and sent garlic naan instead of cheese garlic fresh bread!

Pamela W.

Yelp
The rice was okay, the chicken tikka was just a lot of oil featuring Chicken. That tasted alright... The Garlic Nann wasn't all that either, I had better from other restaurants and at Whole Foods. The worst part was the vegetable samosa..... I was so excited for this but it doesn't look nor taste like vegetable samosa.....

Sjx S.

Yelp
The service here is supremely rude. You'll be standing at the steam table for about a minute while the frivolous conversation goes on between the server and the kitchen staff behind the double swinging doors and short-order window. then the server looks at you, you start to order, and they walk away to handle something else before finally coming back around to you. so yeah, the service is really, really bad. oh, the food is terrible too.

Jacoby J.

Yelp
Been having trouble using the bathroom lately. After reading the reviews I decided to come to Curry King. Best idea I've ever had. Was on the bathroom all night
google avatar

Yelp
I just moved to neighborhood and decided to give this place a try. My first order was fine, so I gave it a second try. I ordered online as usual and showed up at the time to pick Up. The woman there began questioning me and told me that my order wasn't placed. She repeatedly asked me my name and said that I ordered from a different restaurant. I showed her my emailed receipt to prove that I was at the right place then she "found" my order. I had to wait another 20 minutes while they prepared my food. Today, I gave them another shot and ordered online again. This time I gave them an extra 5 minutes just to make sure they receive it. Sure enough the same woman made me show her my email with my name on it because they received nothing. After reading what I ordered, they BEGAN to prepare my food. I support my local businesses and would have loved to support this spot, but 2 times out of the 3 they have failed me. Unfortunately I'll have to look for Indian food elsewhere.
google avatar

JT T.

Yelp
Please, if you're looking for Indian food this is NOT the place to go! This is much more halal type than it is Indian so I wished they wouldn't advertise as such! True Indian cuisine is filled with aromatic sauces and packed full of flavor. I ordered the chicken tikka masala and it was 1. bland and flavorless, 2. oily, 3. pretty sure wasn't chicken breast. The veggie samosa was definitely not fresh and was very disappointing. Again, this is not a true representation of what Indian food is, but an attempt from a Halal style restaurant trying to mimic it. I guarantee these people have no idea what Indian food is. Clearly I'm not the only one who believes this food is pure junk!
google avatar

Viveca C.

Yelp
Not really sure why there are 3 stars because this place has fantastic Indian food. A little dingy in terms of looks but the food is GREAT. It's cheap & delicious. They are very generous with serving sizes. I've never had a problem with the food (seeing as some people who wrote reviews had stomach aches) & I've probably eaten here over 15 times. They have an A grade for sanitary inspection. If you come here, don't expect quality service. This is a type of dine out/take away place. They don't serve you & it's order from the counter deal anyway. I always get the Tikka Masala, Mango Lassi & the Squash as a side dish. It costs $13 overall. Run to this place if you want good Indian food : )
google avatar

Angela K.

Yelp
Good portions and food! Ordered pickup and the food was ready on time. I got the chicken tikka masala meal with naan and it's pretty much enough for two people. I will get around to trying other items on their menu, but it seems like a solid, consistent spot!
google avatar

Paula G.

Yelp
Was craving chicken 65 in the middle of the night and these guys didn't disappoint. I had it delivered through eatstreet and it arrived within 30 minutes. I ordered a small chicken 65, plain naan, and a mango lassi. The order also comes with a salad on the house. The portions were pretty good for the entree and the bread was huge mango lassi was a solid win as well Taste wise I was definitely satisfied and I'd probably order from them again! Just a couple points down for oiliness.
google avatar

Seth F.

Yelp
First off, let me say that in this review I speak to the quality of the experience of eating at Curry King. The one time I ordered delivery the quality and portions just weren't the same. I have eaten at Curry King many times and the food is always delicious. They always have a wide array of dishes (vegetarian and non-vegetarian) available, freshly baked naan, delicious kebabs and samosas. Most recently I had chicken tandoori with naan and palak paneer, and it was absolutely delicious. For $9 I got a large portion of chicken and palak paneer, a freshly baked naan, and salad. You can't beat the prices, especially in NY. You can eat well (or eat 2 smaller meals) for less than $12. If you're looking for a nice sit-down place, Curry King is not the place; if you're looking for some of the best food in the city (in terms of both quality and value), I passionately recommend Curry King.
google avatar

Stacyann B.

Yelp
Chicken Tikka Masala.. Like seriously where is the yogurt sauce?! More like yogurt oil ! This was disgusting . Never again. Portion size was very large and nice packaging but I'll stick to Spice Hut

Maya A.

Yelp
DO NOT. I REPEAT. DO NOT. ORDER FROM HERE! The food I received was unbelievably disappointing, even nauseating. I ordered the chicken tikka masala with basmati rice. I have had a lot of chicken tikka masala in my life, and this one took its place at the bottom of the bucket. There was more OIL than sauce in my platter. I could probably fill up a whole cup with the amount of oil I received. I basically paid $30 for oil. Even the rice was gross, and Im not sure how you can screw up rice. Worst indian food i've ever had. I could not keep eating after 3 bites. Please do yourself a favor and go literally anywhere else if you're hungry. Id rather eat Mcdonald's for the rest of my life than eat one more spoon of this garbage.

Ash B.

Yelp
Taste was ok, but this was the first time I've ever received food so cold. In my life. Like just out the refrigerator cold. The rice was warm and channa on one side of the plate was warm/hot, but most of the cauliflower and peas in the center of the plate were ice cold. The woman ended up microwaving it behind the counter but didn't seem surprised at all when we told her it was cold. I prefer food to be a little more freshly made and...not microwaved twice to get to the right temperature.

Garrett W.

Yelp
They delivered incorrect food that had sausage in it when it was supposed to be vegetarian. We knew it wasn't right because sausage had a very distinct smell and was sitting in an enormous pool of oil. They would not refund my money.
google avatar

Dani A.

Yelp
Dine-in experience only: Been here twice in the last 3 days. Food is delicious, moist, flavorful and easy on the stomach. There are always customers ordering take-out with the occasional few diners like ourselves. Open until 3 or 4am, this place is a great after-bar experience. The TV plays awesome bollywood music videos (if you're into that). The drink selection is scarce: coke, sprite, water, mango lassi and that's about it. My girl likes the Chicken Tikka Masala #3 plate which comes with rice and spinach. I enjoy the more adventurous meat like Goat or better yet, Goat foot. The brown rice works best for me because it's very flavorful and not dry. The curry for the goat involves a bit of cinnamon (not too much) and is slightly spicy. Mmmm Their butter naan is incredible but unnecessary because their plate dishes are so filling. Each plate comes with a little salad. Kind of silly honestly because it has no dressing, just a lime wedge and looks a bit dry. The dining area is small but after you order, take a seat because they'll bring the food out for you. Pay before you leave, cash works best but they do take cards. They do offer delivery but I'm not feeling so confident about it after reading that other Yelper's review... Dining in seems to be best!

Cameron G.

Yelp
Worst Indian in nyc. Naan was tough and difficult to chew and chicken was undercooked.

Erasmo N.

Yelp
Awesome food ,good price , fast delivery really like this place , the lamb shank is a favorite of mine
google avatar

Judy H.

Yelp
The once generous portion of basmati rice has been stuffed into a tiny box, but the price is still the same. The chicken tikka had a sticker on it which said VEGETARIAN! I hope not.
google avatar

Sarah L.

Yelp
Great place that serves an authentic indian/Pakiatani/Bangladeshi food. No issues with pick up or delivery. I like their Bryani and Lamb Shank. They could get some work done on their interior seating but guess that is not an issue due to pandemic.
google avatar

Yashu K.

Yelp
Not the best chicken and tikka masala but I have to give them points for these reasons: 1. Open late 2. Friendly delivery 3. Gave me Soda with my food (didn't order it) 4. Gave me salad (didn't order it) 5. Nice packaging The food is a 2.5-3 out of 5. It is very oily how ever I picked apart the chicken from the oil and I managed. Not the best but not the worst. Overall it wasn't a bad experience.
google avatar

Matthew D.

Yelp
I've ordered from curry king 4 times so far. Every time it's been great quality, cheap and shockingly fast delivery (from 106th to 57th within at most 45 mins of ordering, usually under 30.) The naan sandwich rolls are huge, filling, delicious and a great value. The samosas are giant, perfectly seasoned and fried. If you want Indian food, look no further.

Yelp
Worst place the lady there don't wear mask when she cough or sneeze! They touch your food with her gloves and money . Man I've seen little roaches and flies in the food. !!! Nasty place !

Yelp
Cheapest Indian fast food. Big portions. Spicy. I remembered my trip in India and Himalayas :) I Recommend!)

Yelp
Hello everyone don't eat here in this curry king. The workers not washing hand tach everything then cook break the food not good healthy

Yelp
This is really good food . Tikka masala and nice green sauce . Thx Not from the area but stopped by and like it

Yelp
Popular with the taxi drivers on the west side. Goat is very tender and seasoned, rice is fluffy and flavorful, vegetable fritters are crispy and not greasy. Mango lassi has a good balance of sweet mango and tart yogurt.
