The Best California Farms for Baby Goats and Cheese

"Founded in 1983 and associated with cheesemaker Mary Keehn, this early West Coast creamery is counted among the pioneers of American goat cheese who, in the 1970s and 80s, began supplying natural-food stores and farm-to-table restaurants and helped place goat cheese on influential restaurant menus." - Becky Duffett

OMG, the cheese made from sheep's milk is amazing! I come from Kazakhstan, the country of sheep, I'll say that Cypress Grove rules! It's the best cheese I've tried here in Lake county. It's soo naturally tasting (the content confirms it!), it is milder than Spanish manchego. I love it! Thank you, guys 🙏

Google
Everyone here was incredibly nice and they have a little guestbook where you can put your name and where you’re from! They don’t have a cheese shop on site but the staff was very kind and gave us a short tour of the place and also a brief history of the company. We also got a nice little goodie bag :). If you want to purchase cypress grove products, you can find them at the Arcata Co-Op five minutes away. The staff there are also super knowledgeable about Cypress cheese and can answer any questions you may have.

Google
Humboldt Fog is simply the best cheese on the planet, in my opinion. Bold, complex, a sensory delight of olfactory splendor, various delicate textures, and simultaneously offering mild and subtle flavor with biting grandeur in a robust rind. The Sgt Pepper's offering is a party favorite, as is Purple Haze. And the Midnight Moon is a more conventional cheese that is broadly accessible to many palates. They use vegetarian rennet as well, which requires no compromise on quality or flavor. Kudos, Cypress Grove. You deserve every award and accolade you've received, and more.

Google
Cypress Grove Humboldt Fog goat cheese is to cheese what Beethoven is to music. This is cheese making on a whole other level. Make sure to let it sit at room temperature for at least 1-2 hours before eating. The flavors are just amazing. I have worked hundreds of catering events where Humboldt Fog was a huge hit with all the guests. I highly recommend Cypress Grove cheese.

Google
Every cheese I have had so far from Cypress Grove has been amazing. Humboldt Fog, truffle tremor, midnight moon, and I think one or two others were SO good. I just found out there were more and I want to try them all. By far the best cheeses on this planet.

Google
This cheese is so good! I am living on good bread, local produce, and goat cheese! Thank you all for your dedication. I get a few flavors at a time. They all taste so different. Thank you!

Google
Made the mistake of thinking it was a tasting/retail space but they could not have been nicer. Had the cheese later and it was awesome! Wish them the best!

Google
Love the cheese! No shop or store here though, just the factory. We did not call to see about a tour so we did not get in. Not sure where to buy locally.

Yelp
A close-up of a wedge of Humboldt Fog was my screensaver for the longest time. I remember when I first tried HF (a decade or two ago?) I was just establishing my "cheese legs" when I had a schmear of it on a grainy cracker. The cheese was so delicious it stopped me in my tracks. Ever since I've been a fan of every cheese from Cypress Grove. My favs are the soft ripened varieties including all the Humboldt Fog remixes. The fresh cups are super spreadable varieties that can transform even the most casual cheese courses into something special. I love when I stumble on one I've never tried - it lands in my grocery basket without as much as a second guess. Can't wait for the Chipotle Cacao remix! I can't remember a cheese course I've served without Humboldt Fog - if I had a dollar for every time someone told me I turned them onto HF, I'd have a small fortune. My nephew at 10 years old (some 20 years ago) practically invented the Humboldt Fog burger...the kid added HF on a burger before I did! Love the heck outta you Cypress Grove...keep those HF remixes coming!

Yelp
Absolutely a must-do cheese stop! We went by without calling, just showed up, and we're able to join a tour with another couple who had done the same thing. We were given a delightful tour by one of the hosts (I want to say her name was Ashley?), who told us all about the origin of Cypress, the cheeseaking process, and the types of cheese. I really enjoyed seeing some of the cheeses aging, and learning about the company (only 70 employees!). The best benefit of stopping by is that you will get a bomb little "gift box" with samples of their cheeses. So cute and such wonderful cheeses! The purple haze is my fav - I put it on everything. Thanks for the cool tour and for making awesome cheese, Mary and crew!

Yelp
Fabulous cheese but Yelp/Owner needs to update the business description-- this is NOT a "Cheese Shop". You cannot purchase or sample their cheese here; it is their working production facility that offers a viewing window to see their aging room, but not a place to purchase their products. Regardless, we didn't know that and came by hoping to shop a little, and were greeted by a kind receptionist who explained that there was no shopping or tasting to be done. Instead, however, we were given a sweet little goodie bag with 4 samples of cheese to go and some informational reading about their facility and products. It was a bit awkward, but the two staffers working the front office were friendly hiabout the whole thing. I'm sure it happens relatively frequently. Rated the place a 5 because of the quality of their product and the kind customer service when we arrived. Humboldt Fog is my favorite cheese of all time, but everything they produce is scrumptious. Just wish they represented the facility and what they offer to visitors a bit more clearly through their internet listings. :)

Yelp
We are lucky enough to be wine club members at Brooks in Amity, OR and they had a special offer to do a cheese and wine pairing event. We live in a small town but enjoy traveling and have lived in major cities before so being able to ship "experiences" like this is really a treat! Truly this cheese will change your life, or at least the way you taste cheese the rest of your life. The purple Haze: the lavender and caraway flavors are just perfect. I would have never thought to pair those, it works so well. It's way creamier than store bought goat cheese for sure. The little giant: like I imagine a blue cheese brie would taste. The 'bloomy rind" is the best part. It is a bit earthy but that's why I love it, it's more subtle than other stinky cheeses. The fog lights: a bit intense for many bites. It's wonderful to try and sample with a Pinot but I did not have a lot, the mushroom taste is very flavor forward and leaves a spicy aftertaste a while. I will say also that I enjoy them all much more served cold. I know this is a travesty to some, but the texture really gets to me after a while. So if you are turned off by the idea of these cheeses try them cold!!

Yelp
Absolutely sublime cheese! I first tried Purple Haze, loved it. Then tried Humboldt Fog, and loved it too. Most recently have enjoyed Midnight Moon, and this may be my favorite so far. I have always loved Gouda, and Midnight Moon is without a doubt the most delicious I've ever tasted, truly out of this world! And the fact that all of these are made of goat cheese ~ which tends to be more easily digested and therefore more healthy ~ is an added bonus. Anyway, I'm looking forward to trying all the varieties, but have been so impressed with the ones I have tried, that I was inspired to "share the good news" via this review. Even for those who tend to shy away from goat cheeses, I highly recommend checking out Cypress Grove.

Yelp
Several years ago I graduated from store bought cheese to artisan. Where I lived before I couldn't get good cheese except for those you would buy in a major supermarket chain. That all changed when I came to Portland OR after my financial situation changed. Well I decided to do a large order, my only complaint is that I haven't had time to finish everything. So rich, creamy and clean tasting. No aftertaste of antibiotics (yes I can taste it!), Lots of fresh notes and rich dark truffles flavors along with some very nice herbal fragrances. They are just as good or better than some stuff I have had from overseas (which cost an arm and a leg to get!). Some are very creamy, others very tangy and full bodied. I often have a cheese and salami plate for a quick meal before dinner and Cypress grove takes centerstage along with some of the best salami I can find. I will never go back to buying goat or sheep's cheese from major stores. They just don't cut the muster.

Yelp
I was led to write this review because of Cypress Grove's delicious Midnight Moon goat cheese, which I bought yesterday at Berkeley Bowl West in Berkeley. I didn't recognize the name of the creamery, which was written on the label, so I looked them up. Duh! They're the makers of Humboldt Fog, which is well known and much loved! The web site's description tells a great tale: "It seems difficult to believe, but a mere twenty-five years ago virtually all the goat cheese sold in the United States was imported from Europe. And that's where our story begins, with a few enterprising Americans..." On the other hand, Midnight Moon was not exactly made by enterprising Americans ("Made in Europe exclusively for Cypress Grove Chevre"), so it might be a good idea to serve it with a Rhone wine, or something. Midnight Moon has been well decorated ("Best New Product in Show, IFFCS (New York), 2002"). Check it out! [I just found out that Midnight Moon is Dutch. Hold the Rhone wine and bring on the Genever.]

Yelp
Cypress Grove Chevre has shared their wonderful goat cheeses at several Yelp events. Their cheese can be purchased from places like Berkeley Bowl and several cheese shops. All the cheese they make is wonderful; I think my favorite is the Humboldt Fog. This creates a big problem, I don't want to share. If S finds I hid the cheese so he could not have any he would be hurt. Oh well, he will get over it in a year or so.

Yelp
Cypress Grove Chevre makes some seriously deliz goat cheeses, locale: Yelp summer sip-nic(8/3) eats: both samples were deliz, -would buy some if i could handle the calories but i can't right now. not sure if the lipitor i'm taking now can handle the grease overload. crumbs: -something definitely to look forward to..

Yelp
This past January a good friend of mine who works in the food industry called me on a Monday morning and inquired if wanted to spend the morning at a food show. At first I was not feeling the love and started making up excuses on why I couldn't make it. Work is busy, I am meeting someone at 4, I'm selling my car etc. After a few minutes I relented and walked down to meet him. I was floored by the amount of exhibitors and the volume of free food and snack bites available. Lucky for me, I had not eaten a thing and I was starving and had plenty of room in my belly. But as I turned the corner and came out of the first row sitting there like an oasis was the Cypress Grove Chevre booth. Angels were flying all around and harp music rang out as I approached the most Heavenly of food booths. My eyes got wider and wider as I looked at each of their cheeses laid out waiting to be tasted. Cypress Grove is hands down my favorite domestic cheese maker. The cheese makers put in countless hours perfecting the perfect goat cheese and make every effort to produce the best quality product they can. This translates into consistently good cheese with different flavors for any occasion suitable for some awesome wine pairings. And as one Cypress employee pointed out, if wine is not your thing then try beer. Yes, this actually works too! My favorite is their signature Humboldt Fog. The description from their website reads as follows. "Our signature offering, Humboldt Fog® is an elegant, soft, surface ripened cheese. The texture is creamy and luscious with a subtle tangy flavor. Each handcrafted wheel features a ribbon of edible vegetable ash along its center and a coating of ash under its exterior to give it a distinctive, cake-like appearance. An American Original!" I could not have said it myself. But one thing I would like to add is the emphasis of the ash layer. This single ingredient adds a hint of earthiness to the cheese reminiscent to what you would find a French brie. Perfect with a big red. Yes the website suggests a "crispy white" but I think the earth in the cheese screams for a huge cab or syrah. So why wait six months to write this review? Well this morning instead of spreading cream cheese on my bagel, I found a small leftover hunk of "Purple Haze" in my frig. Oh baby oh baby! My plain bagel with a high quality cheese made for an excellent breakfast.

Yelp
Lamb Chopper and Humboldt Fod are pretty kick ass. They certainly know their way around excellent dairy products. I hear the Truffle Tremor is also really damn good. Great tasting product and also fun creative names. It's easy to like their goods and theyre one of those artisans outside of Petaluma that are making great cheeses.

Yelp
Cypress Grove is incredible! This was one of my first favorite goat cheeses. Humboldt Fog and Purple Haze are distributed widely in SF Bay Area and I didn't think twice about where it was made....good old' Humboldt. Creamy, tangy and ashy. Such a soft texture, a must try.

Yelp
Is it wrong to want to eat a WHOLE wheel of cheese? (No. Right?) Humboldt Fog came into my life like a mist and then it was gone. I wanted more but the long line at Yelps Summer Sip-Nic did not allow me to stay. Right then and there my friend and I decided that no matter the price we were going to order a wheel. After seeing the prices we decided that price mattered and we were going to go halfsies on a small wheel. I cant wait till it arrives. After that we'll have to figure out how to evenly divide custody. I just want the judge to know that I loved the cheese more and will provide a more stable home ...in my stomach:)

Yelp
Holy Cheese!!! I've been on many trips to Europe and have had some fabulous cheese and Cypress Grove easily ranks on the same level! I have not had the chance to visit their official site, but had most of their cheese at my work. I was fortunate enough to sample the Humboldt Fog, Truffle Tremor, Bermuda Triangle, Lamb Chopper, Sgt. Pepper, and Purple Haze. I would say the first three I listed are not for your average joe who enjoys an average mainstream cheese. Very earthy and extremely strong tones (Love my stinky cheese). The rest were just as extraordinary, but may be for most crowds who enjoy a more traditional cheese found in stores. Of course I sat there trying everything single one and found it nearly impossible to choose a favorite. Each one is excellent in it's own way, but I will say that the Humboldt Fog really made an impact on me as a personal favorite. I've seen the cheeses in many grocery stores and markets around the bay area, so now I will have to resist the urge to purchase any (This will be extremely difficult). Highly suggest the cheese, whether a special occasion or a splurge purchase for some wonderful and reliable cheese.

Yelp
(02/26/2012) We got a wedge of the Humboldt Fog, to build a goat's milk cheese plate, from a small city market that is known for selling high quality, small production, artisinal food products. This was the best of the bunch (also had a garrotxa and chipotle chevre from two other farms); intriguing and addictive. Rind was soft and supple, interior oozed at the edges and was crumbly tender at the center. A fig paste and norcino salumi were nice complements.

Yelp
My husband and I have been huge fans of the Humboldt Fog Cheese made by the Cypress Grove Creamery for quite some time now. It's one of our go-to cheeses whenever we entertain. After attending an event in Alameda this afternoon, we now have another favorite from this fantastic creamery; Midnight Moon. It's got a delicious nutty flavor and we love the slight crunch of the protein crystals that form naturally with aging. Midnight Moon will definitely be a new star on our cheese platters!

Yelp
Seriously the best cheese ever- I love the Lamb Chopper, Humboldt Fog & Midnight Moon (probably my favorite). They run an awesome business, take such good care of their animals & give back to their community. This is a company you can feel good supporting.

Yelp
I have to give them an A++ for customer service. Recently, I bought a combo pack of cheeses from www.woot.com (a "deal-a'day" site). I bought it for my wife, a cheese nut, for Christmas. This combo pack included several of the Cypress Grove cheeses. Before buying, I searched all over the product page, read customer reviews from those who had also purchased the cheeses, but could find no information about whether the cheese needed to be refrigerated before opening. I assumed not, and hit "buy now" with my mouse. About $50. I received the cheese about a week later, in a box, with no cooling items inside or warnings on the outside about refrigeration. It sat in my home office for 2 weeks before I went to wrap it last night. I noticed that the box had a grease stain on it, and that a couple of the shrink wrapped cheeses inside were oily on the outside (didn't see any holes in the packaging). I wiped them clean, sealed in zip lock bags, and packaged in Christmas paper. I noticed the cheese packages themselves said "keep refrigerated". I then called and left a voice mail with Cypress Grove's customer service, inquiring whether it was safe to eat the cheese and if it indeed needed refrigeration (and if the 2 weeks of room temperature had been bad). This morning (the very next morning!), I received a phone call from Charles, who warned me not to consume the cheese, and that it should have been refrigerated upon receipt :( However, he offered to send some replacements - WOW! 1) Quick response time 2) Replacement of a product they didn't even sell me 3) Timely free shipping to my in laws' in time to save Christmas I haven't even tasted the cheeses (can't wait!), but the customer service associated with the brand has far exceeded expectations. Well done and thank you again!

Yelp
Consistant and reliable. I know I can choose any one of their cheeses and it's delicious!

Yelp
For those visiting Arcata, this is NOT a retail shop! This is the address for the actual creamery where the magic happens. That being said, picture two San Franciscans looking to buy some Humboldt Fog, wandering into a strange unmarked building while a shirtless man in a tractor stares, idling, at your SUV, absolutely mud-drenched after a long camping trip. We poked our heads in, decided we were in the wrong place, and walked back out. A small energetic woman came racing after us, yelled " excuse me! can we help you?" FI and I exchange a glance, "we're looking for...the cheese," I say tentatively. "Well what are you waiting for?" she gestures, "follow me!" she proceeds to explain where we are, and that while they do not offer tours, she would be happy to let us peek at the magical cheese making room! She walked us through a long verbal tour of the whole cheese making process - both the Humboldt Fog we were seeking as well as the famous Chevre. I asked where we could find a retail something or other so we could buy some, and she presented us with our very own wheel of PsychiDellic Chevre, just for stopping by. Thank you, cheese lady. We are so happy. We're enjoying it with a fresh baguette from the blue bottle coffee place on the Plaza. Thank you for making these tourists' day!

Jennifer D.

Yelp
This is not a cheese shop. You can only buy it at local stores. The below Yelp review is incorrect. However, we did go visit and they were extremely nice. They gave us a quick tour of the aging room and a sample to go!

Barbara F.

Yelp
So, my husband is a cheese hound. His world revolves around Etorki, Comte, Stilton, Roquefort, Rabiolo and Taleggio. None of that Gouda humdrum for me, & he's from Holland, the home of Gouda! Always trying new stuff. Latest one is Humboldt Fog goat cheese made by Cypress Grove. OMG! You read that right. My life will never be the same. I now know that Humboldt Fog always needs to be on call. Love at first bite!

Julie F.

Yelp
You can find this cypress Grove award winning cheese in any good market, cheese shop or restaurant from Arcata to Manhattan. It is the best. Great gift too.
