Houston’s Most Exciting Restaurant Comebacks of 2018 | Eater Houston

"Having left its original EaDo location, it relocated to a much larger space in Cypress and has settled in nicely; although the new location is less convenient for some, the move has paid off and it’s worth the drive for perfectly-smoked brisket." - Amy McCarthy

Pappa Charlies Barbecue Reopens In Cypress | Eater Houston

"After the EaDo location closed late last year, the barbecue operation has reopened inside the Cypress Trail Hideout, giving owner Wesley Jurena more pit capacity and better parking than the original brick-and-mortar (opened in 2015). The new, more expansive space includes outdoor seating and a stage for live music. Jurena — who began smoking meats in 2009 and sharpened his craft on the competition circuit before moving from a food truck to a permanent spot — showcased a menu at a recent pop-up that featured sausage, ribs, brisket, mac and cheese, pinto beans and more, selling out of several items. Service is currently dinner only Tuesday through Sunday, with lunch planned to be added in the coming weeks." - Amy McCarthy

We chose CTH for my birthday based on a friend's recommendation, and drove 40 minutes to try it, and we loved it! We started with the cheeseburger, the pork belly bites, and the Brisket Skillet Queso. All three were very well-cooked and it was hard to save room for the mains. Then we tried Pork Belly Tacos, Chicken Fried Steak, and smoked chicken quesadillas. I'm not usually a fan of pork belly, and I don't know what they did to it, but it was amazing. The tacos were solidly tasty, but the CFS was the star of the show. The portions are also very generous, we had to take so much home! Our server Emily was a darling; she checked up on us regularly, got everything out to us at the right time, and never made us feel rushed to turn over the table. She made sure we had time to enjoy the appetizers before the mains, too, which is huge with me! We are already planning our next trip to sample all the sides!

Stopped in for the first time this past weekend with the family. We were sat immediately and without issue. Good music playing made for a nice atmosphere. Also had games on the TVs which was great. Watched the Astros while we ate. Edit* - this is for our 2nd visit - 3 people in our party got the burger and everyone enjoyed it. Fries were also very good. Daughter LOVES the banana pudding. She says it one of the best in the city. Good beer selection. First visit - Wife had the 1/2 chicken and enjoyed it. Green beans were good as were the mashed potatoes. Son had a burger which was big and he enjoyed it as well. I had a sliced BBQ sandwich and a baked potato. BBQ was flavorful, had a great bark and was tender and delicious. The potato was huge. Service was great throughout. The only downside was the cream corn that we didn't really care for. Oh yeah, wife and daughter loved the banana pudding and rated it as one of the best they've ever had (and my daughter is a banana pudding afficianado!) Overall it was a great meal and we'll definitely be back. We just won't get the cream corn. Definitely recommend you stop in and give them a shot.

Came here from a saved bbq list and the place did not disappoint. We will be back for round 2 My wife had brisket tacos and u had a two meat plate. Her tacos were near prefect for her and I enjoyed my two meat plate but the beef sausage was fantastical. Kudos to the team here.

This restraunt is a hidden gem! The food was delicious! The wait staff was very nice! We had an awesome time! The customers were even nice. This is definitely a family friendly place to bring everyone. The music was the best. The kids were singing some songs they knew and they were eating and there were also some Easter eggs placed around for the kids to play with. 10/10 experience. We will be back soon!

Google
Our first time trying this BBQ spot. Looked up something different from the normal place we usually go to. This was a hit! Brisket was good, sausage excellent. Dipping sauce was great. The shrimp tacos were on point! I highly recommend a stop by here. Only drawback was that we came on Sunday, when there was no live band performing. Bummer. Overall, we'll be coming back.

Google
I just left this establishment, and this of course was my first time eating here. I was hesitant to try the BBQ only because I didn't smell any smoke from wood in the air, or the atmosphere once I stepped out of the vehicle, or entering the building. I was waited on by a young white guy, but I can't remember his name, but... he was very good at being helpful with what was in the menu, and he was attentive at helping with drinks, and asking how our experience was so far. To start off I purchased the 2 meat BBQ plate. I ordered the brisket, pork ribs, Mac and cheese, and greens. *Let me say... whoever is making the greens in the back needs a raise!!! Those greens are top notch! Best greens I have had in a loooong time. I rate them at 5 out of 5 * Now let's talk about the brisket... It was cut very thin first off, and it didn't have any smokey taste. I am a lover of bark, so I can say what ever season that they are using was decent, but remember as you can see in the picture the cuts are really thin, so you only get that taste for a brief couple of seconds. The brisket wasn't moist, the actual meat was dry, but the fat was rendered down, so there was some decent taste, and mouth feel there if you are into fat on brisket. I am a lover of fat on brisket myself. I give the brisket a 1 out 5. I am a big lover of ribs. I score a BBQ restaurant on if your ribs are good or not, and if your ribs are not good then it's a no-go for me. I love just simple ribs with only rub on it, and no sauce on the top. I believe sauce should be a compliment placed on the side as a condiment, and not have to be put on ribs if you are producing a good product. With that being said... The ribs were not good at all. I couldn't taste too much seasoning on the rib, and I think it had a slight glaze on them. I only bit one piece. I give it a 1 out of 5 * The Mac and cheese looked to have potential, because it looked creamy, so I was rooting for it, but once I took a bite... It was lacking any seasoning, bland. All I'm looking for is a little salt, garlic, or paprika🤷 something. I did order the okra, because I saw someone else's review, and she said the okra was good. I am a huge lover of okra and i can say it was crispy and seasoned really well. I give it A 5 out of 5. I also ordered the onion rings from the advice of the waiter, because he said it was his favorite appetizer, and I can say he was right it was pretty good. My brother-in-law ordered the Brisket Mac and cheese, and you already know what I said about the Mac and cheese above, so I don't have to say it again. He gave it a 1.2 out of 5, because he had some bark pieces mixed inside. Over all I gave this restaurant a score of 2 out of 5 because the greens were amazing, the atmosphere was busy, but nice looking, and the waiter was very nice, and helpful. The BBQ just didn't do it for me. I always give a restaurant two tries, because it could just have been a bad day. I will wait for a detailed response from the owner on how they may make changes or if they won't, and just give a generic response like (Sorry for your experience, and sorry we couldn't meet your expectations. I hope we can do better next time, and we look forward to accommodating you when you come back to visit us). I will be waiting!! *Wait I almost forgot the soda(Dr pepper) I had was very good, and they give you plenty of soda in a huge red cup👍. Which I liked a lot.

This place is not what it was just a year ago. Also does not look like it is going to recover. Something changed with management these past years. Got sick from a recent visit, not just me but people I ate it with. $60 total in food, I even tipped while picking it up. I reached out to let them know and find more information. The reviews did not match the experience. We wanted to know if this was a one-off or consistent. I asked them if they used expired meat, reheated meat for the previous day, used old grease, etc. I cook bbq as well so I know what to look for. They said they would look into it, I never heard back. I reached out again asking for a follow-up never heard back again. The service I received in response to my visit with subpar as well. We essentially had to throw away the half we couldn't eat. No form of compensation, which I guess is fine if they are struggling, although we couldn't eat the other half and got sick, but whatever. They said they would look into it and we never heard back. We even reached back out multiple times. I will also like to say that we were kind on the initial reach out as well as the follow up. It was only a few sentences. Shows lack of care, but the primary concern is health.

I was here with my elderly parents, one of which has dementia and can hardly function. Some people came in, hassled us and asked if we were armed (why were they asking?) Then the governor showed up and completely ruined our afternoon. I don't care if the governor wants tk lie to the people. I dont care if he has to pander to the lowest denominator, but I do care that my mother has a good time considering she likely wont remember it tomorrow. He took that from us. He doesnt care what the people want because we were (unfortunately) there and there was no support. Whatever you see online has fake cheers, it was dead quiet. I hate to rate this place so low bc the food was phenomenal! The the abrupt presence of an unwanted politician ruined our first, and likely only experience there. I bet the owner wont even acknowledged this thorough review, which, in my opinion, should sway where you decided to spend your time and money

Yelp
Been wanting to try Cypress Trail Hideout and just never made the time. Walked in for dinner and the place was about 10% capacity if that. Requested a booth and hosted said they didn't have any clean. She went to grab a cloth to wipe down table. Table had empty paper roll holder. Swapped one with another table since waitress was talking with other employees. Then ordered IBC Root Beer and Glass of water. Went with Brisket Queso and Fried Pickles. The brisket was delish and the queso was ok. The Fried Pickles were so delish. Ordered brisket Sandwich and pulled Pork sandwich. Was hoping to have water refill but server did not come back until we were finished with meal. Server was nice, just wish she checked on our table more than hanging out with coworkers. Food was really good, brisket queso was not bad. Hope to go back next month for a better experience.

Yelp
If you have not had an opportunity to visit this place I highly recommend you do. We sat at the bar and our Bartender Ashley who was so friendly and helpful recommended the wings because of their Wing Wednesday special. So I took her up on it and I have to say the lemon pepper wings were awesome. My friend decided to order the beef fajita street tacos and I know what I will be trying the next time I go back. The food was great and our adult drinks topped it all off. Before we left Ashley was sure to tell us we should come back on Taco Tuesday to try their spin on Jack in the Box tacos. The restaurant has a great outdoor dining area and is definitely kid friendly. They have a stage where live music is played on the weekends. All in all it's a great place and I'm glad I stopped in there.

Yelp
This place never lets you down. Our server was great, super friendly and very tentative. I had loaded back potato w/brisket. My wife had the loaded potato skins with brisket. Both were great and brisket was very moist and tender. A pleasure always to eat here.

Yelp
The ribs were pretty good, fall off the bone even. If you have the patience to baste them with bbq sauce and toss them in the oven for a few minutes, they just get even better. The brisket was moist, but lacked flavor in my opinion. I forgot to get a pic of the inside of the Mac n cheese balls, but this go round they were even better. Actually filled with meat this time haha. Not that they weren't delicious before tho.

Yelp
My wife and I love this place. It's a BBQ / sandwich joint with a gravel patio. Food is great. Two complaints: BRING BACK THE MUFFALETA SANDWICH! (Maybe downsize it? The FULL option was realistically four portions) The Two Meat plate pricing is misleading. Most BBQ places will charge you a fixed price which INCLUDES the two meats, and usually give you two sides, asterisking anything that's an upcharge. This place charges you set price for the two meat plate, and then upcharges you for the individual items. My suggestion: increase the initial charge and simplify everything. Otherwise what is the initial fee for? The physical plate?

Erica K.

Yelp
Food is bland and unappealing. No real flavor. Service and ambiance aren't special. Not really worth going back to.

Gary H.

Yelp
Brisket did not have any smoke flavor just seasoning on top. I will say it was tender but more like oven cooked. Pinto beans were very salty. Potato salad was a bit different (chunky) but good. My wife had chicken fried steak. The breading was good but lots of gristle. Green beans were good and the mashed potatoes were very good. Try it and see. Had good service too.

Yelp
10/10 i have yet to sit and eat inside , i like to order from door dash most of the time. The take out is amazing I've ordered the pound of BRISKET,the MAC AND CHEESE BALLS, BANANA PUDDING The brisket is super moist and the fat is just buttery melt in your mouth i give it a 9.8/10 should be Michelin rated The mac and cheese balls 10/10 they are a must dipping them in the bbq sauce! And lastly the amazing banana pudding! Its 9.5/10 the cream is thick almost like a cream cheese vibe but more whipped cream then cream cheese definitely get you a piece! You will thank me! This is probably my favorite meal that ive had in a while No photo because i ate it all

Yelp
I've always had good food and service at the Hideout. The portions are generous and the atmosphere is family friendly. My go to is the Reuben and fried okra as my appetizer. The basket of fried okra is easily enough for 4 or more people.

Yelp
Went for weekday happy hour. Service was amazing, the bartenders are friendly, knowledgeable, and checked in with us regularly. Big selection of beers on tap, we had a Karbach love street (one of go-to's) and a Fireman's blond ale (or something like that...can't recall exact name). Ordered Chips, salsa, guac, and queso...the queso was a little curdled looking, so we avoided it, but the chips were light & crispy, quac & salsa was good.

John C.

Yelp
This place has been pretty good since we been going a couple of years ago but they really need to check their beer lines. Me and my wife both ordered 2 different beers and they were both sour tasting and just impossible to drink past one sip. The server who took for ever to come to the table said they had the same problem the day before. Since her service was so slow we decided not to order anything else. The food was good and we will try them again but please do better with your beer lines and just taste a shot glass full in the a.m. to ensure you are not giving customers bad beer!

Yelp
Every burger I've had has been top notch in quality ingredients, execution, presentation, and taste. The wagyu burgers are almost a religious experience. All of this is complemented by some of the friendliest staff you'll meet. A quality, diverse offering of local craft beer is the perfect highlight. I usually try to go here when the weather is cool enough to sit outside at the family style picnic tables, eat, and watch the local musical talent play on the restaurant's stage while the kids run around. The music is just loud enough to engage the crowd, but not too loud to drown out conversations. The Hideout is the perfect blend of excellent food, service, entertainment, and great times.

Laurie S.

Yelp
We had dinner here tonight and the service was wonderful. Very friendly staff. Live music and a fun atmosphere. We will definitely be coming back soon!
google avatar

Lyzzie R.

Yelp
This place only gets three stars because the vibes on Saturday night with music was great. The food was mediocre. The barbecue plate was generic and over salty. The Mac and cheese was bland and comparable to frozen Mac and cheese. The wagyu burger with bleu cheese and caramelized onions wasn't bad. But the bleu cheese overpowered everything else. (If you like bleu cheese and caramelized onions, try out Jonathan's the Rub's burger, so balanced and incredible!) Servers were nice but hard to find. This place is open until 2am tonight and we were the only people left inside at around 10pm, but yet we couldn't find our server. I had to ask a hostess if we needed to pay up front. We sat there (clearly done with our food. It was already in a to go box. And it took probably 10 minutes for him to come back so I could order dessert. YALL. I ordered banana pudding. The flavor of the vanilla pudding was good but that was it. And I don't mean the rest was bad. I mean that was kinda it. There was a very thin line of...graham crackers? And then ZERO. I repeat. ZERO bananas. In banana pudding! This was my last straw. Between mediocre food, service you have to get up and track down, and a dessert that's missing the main ingredient, it's not worth the $75 we spent. If you wanna come here for drinks and some apps for the music definitely do! But don't come for the barbecue.

Gary O.

Yelp
This has become one of our weekly spots. The Thursday special on JIB tacos is awesome. They have great daily specials during the week. The servers and bartenders are great!

Yelp
Great place to hangout, have a few beers and listen to live music on Saturdays. The food is good, my kids liked the burgers and specially the fries! Their menu is good for those of us with allergies so nice. The service is great. The brisket however wasn't smoked or at least it didn't taste like it. Not bad though, still good.

Yelp
My husband and I decided to give this place a try after reading all the reviews. Super glad we did. There was a fairly decent lunch crowd. We were seated quickly. Our server Joe was awesome. Very knowledgeable about the menu. We started with the loaded potato skins that were fabulous! We would return just for those. For mains we had the nachos and the Ruben sandwich. The nachos were good, not my favorite. There was a terrible ratio of chips to meat. I had to dig around the find all the meat. Also, the chips are super thin but covered in queso cheese (not shredded cheese) so within minutes my lunch was a soggy mess. The flavor was great but I did not expect to dig around with a fork in my nachos. My husband said his Ruben was very good and he also loved the fries. I took a star off for the soggy nachos but we will definitely go back!

Yelp
The service here was excellent. From the moment we walked in to the moment we left we were greeted and served with such beautiful, smiling staff members. Sydney was attentive and friendly . The food was fresh, and cooked to order despite coming in at 10:30 pm . The atmosphere was relaxing and comfortable. Definitely be coming back.

Yelp
I'd give 3.5 if I could, but not quite 4 quality so sticking with 3 until going for another try. Love the ambiance and patio area, and the service team was excellent. Overall the food was average quality. I was with my young son so we went with bbq plate of turkey, beef sausage, macaroni, and coleslaw, along with a kid's hamburger with fries to share. The seasoning and flavor of both the turkey and sausage was good, but the cook was just OK without much snap/bite to either meat. The coleslaw was oddly the stand out to me since it was not swimming in mayonnaise and was pretty well balanced; the bell peppers were a great touch. Big miss on the macaroni though as it came cold with the cheese slightly coagulated. Kid's burger was basic and nothing special, but the fries were thick, crispy, seasoned, and delicious. I want to give the bbq (specifically brisket) another try before I call the bbq menu basic and stick to the menu dishes. It may not turn out to be the bbq spot that I wanted, but the ambiance alone is worth going back to grab a few drinks, a burger, and listen to live music on the patio.

Yelp
Good live band and friendly atmosphere. Friday night is lively with a good crowd. Yeah-uh!

Yelp
This restaurant has good food (not amazing or super delicious, but good). We would go more often if it were less pricey.

Yelp
If you're looking for a cool place to hang out and possibly bring your dog I'd recommend here. It's nothing exceptional but I'm wanting to come back and try some other things. Their server was nice and pretty attentive for us being the only table outside. We got their jalapeño poppers as an appetizer and they were really good (though not spicy -- disclaimer I have a high tolerance) and the cranberry sauce was a nice touch. We didn't really care for their Mac and cheese.. just nothing special to it. However their fried okra was really good. We tried their turkey sandwich and like the overall feeling it was average. Could have used more of the Serrano garlic aioli, and we thought the turkey was dry some but it didn't steer us away to coming back. If you live in the area and are looking for a casual atmosphere (where dogs are welcomed) give it a go!

Yelp
I ordered a bacon cheeseburger with American cheese. My burger came out, covered in barbecue sauce with cheddar cheese. I was so annoyed and even say anything I just took it to go and then threw it out when I got home. My husband loved a salad though.

Yelp
Enjoyed getting some Pappa Charlies Barbeque since he moved from his old spot in town. The service at the bar was great.

Yelp
Went here with a couple of friends on a Friday evening. Loved the Texas BBQ feel and the awesome decorations. Also have a pretty great outdoor patio set up as well. Looks like some live music is performed here based on the stage that is set up outside. Now let's chat about the food... Unfortunately not my favorite BBQ. Brisket was extremely fatty where is wasn't enjoyable and the turkey was not as flavorful as I hoped. However... I did enjoy the taste of their pork ribs.. not particularly fall off the bone but for the price of what you are paying I believe it should be. Maybe we went on an off day? Would come back and enjoy a drink and some live music!

Yelp
With the wifey at home trying to finish her book, I decided to go get lunch with a good friend before heading out to a concert. We decided to try this place, one that we both heard so many good things from friends and word of mouth. We were excited to try Cypress Trail, and trust me, I really really was looking forward to give it 5 stars. The way the interior looks is really cool, the patio had a band playing that sounded great. All the tvs were on college football games that were good games I wanted to see. The staff is really friendly. So we ordered a dry rub vinegar wings for appetizer that was great, they had my favorite orange cream soda in a bottle that I love. I see on the menu they have a 12 oz ribeye that comes with a loaded potato, so I ordered that for my meal. Guys, this is where the wheels came off the wagon and they ended up with 2 stars. I took a picture for legal reasons to verify my claims about the ribeye. First it was way over cooked and dry. That wasn't even the main problem though, the ribeye was 70% fat and almost no meat. I don't know who's in charge of picking or cutting the meat for the ribeye but they need to be fired or at least start wearing their prescription glasses. I'm not joking when I tell you I had about 4 bites of meat from a 12 oz ribeye. This just can't happen in a restaurant in Texas! We might try this place again in the future, but will definitely not be ordering their $30 ribeye. I've heard their bbq is good, maybe I will try that next time.

Yelp
It's my first time here and won't be my last. Yelp led me to this place for lunch. I had the BBQ chicken salad. The chicken was moist and flavorful. Crisp lettuce. So enjoyed this salad. Great service too.

Yelp
Update on most recent visit. I had bragged about this place so much I was thrilled to take some out of town guests on a Sunday evening. I was soooooo disappointed. Service was good but the food quality was such a disappointment that I better understand some of the lower reviews. Our baked potatoes were undercooked (three of us agreed) and still too firm and cool on the interior (which melted none of the cheese and only some of the butter) and the brisket was cool and flavorless compared to all my other experiences here. It tasted like the chopped stuff from the tubs at the grocerystore. I was really bummed and hope that consistently of food in temperature and cooking technique gets consistent because when it is on point it is to die for (or drive out for).

Yelp
First time coming here tonight ! Let me say amazing service and the live band was amazing ! Food was so delicious like we are so full everything was spot on here . Will definitely come back soon!!

Yelp
Worst service I have ever had from a bartender/server ever, she immediately took our drink order with an attitude, dropped off our drinks and never came back to take our food order. We were completely ignored for 30 minutes while she cut fruit, cleaned tables, refilled bar drinks... when we got up to leave and tried to tell management about the bartender's terrible service and completely ignoring us, they had just as bad attitude and blew us off. We eat out all over Houston, at the best restaurants and great bars, I have never had an experience this bad, very rude. My husband even asked her before we walked out if we did something that may have offended her. We love great BBQ but we won't be back here, I'll drive to the Heights first.

Yelp
It was just ok. We went on a Sunday midday and service was lackluster, the food was cold. Great outdoor area with covered seating.

Yelp
I can't say enough good things! We were looking for somewhere to go eat that we could bring our dog. When we got there it was over 100 degrees outside and the owner accommodated us like we were his VIP customers. He made sure we had the best coolest spot on the patio with plenty of fans he even opened up the back gate to let in a cross breeze. They brought our dog a bowl of water. Joe was our server and he was so great! Very knowledgeable about the menu and gave us great recommendations. We had the chicken fried steak (so incredibly tender) the cream corn was the best we've ever had, smoked chicken Caesar salad was scrumptious, brisket and ribs phenomenal, mashed potatoes so creamy and everything was seasoned to perfection. Fried pickles were perfect! Pork belly bites amazing. I could not be more sad that we live so far away from this gem of a place, but we will be back!!!

Yelp
Wanted to try out this bbq place in Cypress w/ a nice shaded patio after my dad and sister tried this place a couple months ago. W/ covid dying down a bit now and people getting vaccinated, some of the waiters and waitresses weren't wearing masks and we didn't see a sign saying about masks being required when we walked into the restaurant. It depends on how comfortable businesses still are w/ covid, and I'm sure this place is getting a little lax w/ it. Now moving on to the food, we ordered a bbq queso and chips appetizer w/ a jalapeno kick in the queso and I gave it 4 out of 5 stars overall. For my main meal, I ordered a sliced marble brisket meal w/ white bread on the side and fries and cream corn for my two sides. My favorite part of the meal were the fries since they're served w/ a good seasoning to it and a good generous portion. The cream corn was a little tasty w/ some bbq taste to it, but I only ate about half since I was getting full from the meal along w/ the chips and queso I shared w/ my parents and sister. The brisket was a little dry even though I poured bbq sauce onto my sandwich and I still had to dip it in the sauce to make it more tastier. But wouldn't mind going back here again though soon and maybe try something different.

Yelp
This is really about a 3.5 if I'm honest with the potential for a 4. Parking is limited, and it's a gravel lot. Going on a Saturday around 4, meant that finding a parking spot wasn't easy. I can't imagine being here around prime dinner time. The building itself looks new, and is spacious enough inside. Additionally, there's ample outdoor seating. Now for the food. We came for the barbecue as I'm currently on Keto, and I loved Pappa Charlie's when they were downtown, although I couldn't have my beloved boudin this time (cause Keto like I mentioned previously). I did get my bbq place usual 2 meat plate with brisket and sausage, green beans and coleslaw as sides. My husband ordered the same with brisket, boudin (the betrayal of the ones you love), mashed potatoes (more betrayal), and coleslaw. I should have asked for all moist brisket, but I didn't think of it when ordering. We both had about half lean, half moist, and considering it was delicious along with everything else. I know many folks love lean brisket, but I do not. In the future I'll definitely ask for all moist. In short, if you're looking for some good que, give them a try, but don't go at peak times or you'll have trouble finding a place to park.

Yelp
Great hang out spot. My Kid loved the live music and the food was fantastic. Our waitress was very attentive even though it was busy. Great place to take the family

Yelp
Reuben was good. Nice dog friendly patio. Covered outside area was pleasant even in 90s. Waitress was catering to the dog.

Yelp
While the Yelp location is accurate when you drive up you may be confused because this restaurant has two names. Cypress Trail Hideout and Pappas Charlie's BBQ and the latter name is more noticeable on the exterior. Don't worry, you are in the right place. Located on Hempstead Hwy. there is a dedicated parking lot on the side which isn't very large. I guess you can also park on the shoulder of the highway if need be. This place has a large outdoor area with some covered seating for eating and a large open area with a band stage and outdoor games. There is even a flat screen TV mounted on a tree that is immediately taken down if rain comes. I don't think I have ever seen that before. Indoors they have a full bar with separate dining areas that are in all the same room. The decor is nice and new with a lot of wood. My first visit was to try their 1/2 smoked chicken dinner with sides of pinto beans and potato salad for $11.95. The chicken was juicy and flavorful (4). The beans had a smoky accent to them that I liked (4) and the potato salad had onions in it and while chunky was a little drier than I prefer but still a 3. My table service for that meal was very good (4). My second visit a week later for to try the sliced brisket sandwich with one side which I chose as cole slaw for $10.95. I asked for moist and I got it. The sandwich was good with an adequate amount of meat on a split top bun. I gave it a 3.5. The cole slaw was good too that also deserved a 3.5. Table service was very good again. My observations of the Pappa Charlie's menu was that it offered good meats with adequate sides. I wouldn't put this place in my top 3 bbq places in Houston however this is a good place to eat. Esoecially for this general area it may be the best bbq. I do like the vibe of this place and predict it will be popular with the locals. The outdoor area looks like a fun place to hang out. I did not try the CTH menu which is a non bbq menu but I feel that it would be good too. Even though my food would probably average a 3.5, I am going to round up for all of the other intangibles of this restaurant to a 4. I am sure I will return.

Yelp
I love their food but the service is just awful. We keep coming back for the food but today we just walked out after 10 minutes of waiting for someone. anyone. to come take a drink order. the place had 3 tables with customers--not busy. Four employees were standing around the hostess talking and laughing. Three other employees just walked past us trying not to make eye contact. Another employee was sitting at a table eating. i hate to write bad reviews but hoping the owner reads this and improves the service. I know it's hard to find help that actually wants to work these days. but it would be a shame for a place with such good food to close because customers can't stand the service.

Yelp
We have some friends who live quite far away & this is the halfway point if we're looking to meet up. My friend suggested this place and I agreed because it looks like they serve a little bit of everything. I'm picky & it's hard to find something I'll eat, but I'm usually safe with a kid's chicken tender meal. My boyfriend had the 2 meat dinner with fried okra and cucumber salad. Our friends split the same, but switched the okra for macaroni. My friend and I also had several beers. The food was excellent, but it was the service we received that made it a 5 star review. Our drinks were never empty and we didn't have to ask for anything. I wish I knew her name so she'd get the recognition she deserves. I will definitely keep this in mind when choosing in the future.

Yelp
I have 0 complaints about this place. I would 100% recommend this place. The service was great and the food was amazing! I am a big fan of the pork sausage and green beans. The drinks are great as well! I had the blue raspberry lemonade. To top it off, the prices were just right. Overall, it's a great environment for a friend or family lunch. I will be returning!

Yelp
The food here is excellent! So far, the two servers that we've had were excellent as well. To be honest, my only complaint is the serving size of the sides is all over the place. The fried okra is a giant side of fried okra, while the cucumber and tomato salad is a tiny little ramekin. So far, the brisket, the sausage, and the pork ribs have been amazing

Yelp
We sat outside for an early dinner this weekend - it was a firehouse afternoon so it worked out well. We had a party of 10 people and they have some big picnic tables. There was plenty of space for everyone. We had margaritas, fried pickles, and queso for starters and everything was good. The portion sizes were good and everything we ordered came out correctly and quickly. We will probably be back. I'd definitely recommend for a team sport/get together as there was plenty of room outside for multiple families.

Yelp
I visited with my family, who rave about this restaurant. They are the reason I gave a 4-star rating. They love their burgers and brisket. I personally would rate it a 2.5-3, mainly due to the fact I'm not a beef or pork eater. I had the catfish platter, which came with two sides, tarter sauce and cocktail sauce. I chose creamed corn and steamed veggies (squash, bell peppers and zucchini). The catfish and the steamed veggies were pretty good. Warning - the creamed corn has bacon mixed into it. The waitress was extremely nice and offered to replace the side free of charge. I would recommend the catfish platter or cedar plank salmon if you're looking for a fish option!

Yelp
Omg I was craving BBQ and this pork rib is amazing. The sausage plate is amazing. My wife enjoyed her brisket bake potato. I can't wait to visit the actual location. Food came fresh and hot from Uber eats.

Yelp
Heard a lot of good things about this place, so I decided to try it out for lunch with my daughter. We love the patio area! But the food was bland to us. The staff are extra nice. Can say I will go back but it's an ok restaurant.

Yelp
Great patio! Affordable beer, with plenty of great local options on draft. The barbecue definitely has a very peppery profile... if pepper is not your thing, you may want to avoid it. Fortunately, we are pepper people and enjoyed it. Not sure I'd want to inside... it's dark and a little depressing, but I'll eat barbecue and drink beer on this patio any day.
