22 Great Casual Italian Restaurants In NYC - New York - The Infatuation

"A newer UES spot, this quiet little restaurant has an upbeat Italian pop playlist and a relatively short menu, which includes very fresh salads, pastas and heartier dishes, like veal garnished with thyme and roasted carrots. The house pasta is a satisfyingly chewy cacao nib cavatelli with braised beef and Tuscan wine, but they have more traditional options as well. It’s an easy choice in the neighborhood for coffee and a light bite, or a low-key dinner." - Willa Moore, Sonal Shah, Neha Talreja, Bryan Kim, Carina Finn Koeppicus

Randomly found this while walking in the upper east side in the morning. Glad we stopped in for brunch! Very nice quaint restaurant cafe! We had the focaccia with prosciutto and olive 🫒 pesto. Also had the salad with chicken. The overnight oats were also very healthy and delicious during the warm afternoon because the dish is served cold; refreshing and delicious. Highly recommend this place for a morning, mid-morning meal ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Very last minute plan with my husband! We’re traveling from California, and we would normally get a drip coffee to go from this restaurant in the morning. We knew the atmosphere was very cozy inside, so we decided to give it a try for dinner. It was amazing!! we ordered the lasagna and the tuna salad. Both were fresh and tasty. Shout out to our kind and sweet server Maggie! She encouraged us one morning to try their menu, and we were lucky to have her waiting on our table tonight. Happy to have found this gem around the block!

We were lost in the neighborhood and I’m glad we found this place. Cozy and elegant. We had a tiramisu and a couple of drinks. Super cute, and the service was amazing. Can’t wait to go back and have some dinner ♥️♥️♥️

Loved this hidden gem! We stumbled upon this once when we were craving authentic Italian, which seems to be rare in Manhattan nowadays. Chef and his wife are so nice and comes around to your table to make sure you’re taken care of. Great cozy atmosphere, definitely a must try. Lasagna and bolognese were so good. Great selection of wine too.

We stumbled upon this place totally by chance on our way back from a doctor’s appt and it only took one meal for it to become a favorite! Food is extremely fresh including the pasta and the focaccia bread they use for the sandwiches, all made from scratch on premise. The tuna tartar was amazing and so was the gazpacho and our pastas! We are foodies and thoroughly research places before deciding to try. As someone who has lived in Italy, I think its not easy to find authentic Italian restaurants despite infine Italian options in Nyc. The cherry on top was finding out this is a small family business and meeting Adriano and his wife who seemed to make a genuine effort to get to know all their guests and ensure a pleasant experience! We cant wait to return!

Da Adriano — savor Italy, enjoy life Heading out of my condo, strolling down 1st Avenue, traversing through a big criss-cross, and you’ll find the tiny, timid, almost rusty-look Italian restaurant — Da Adriano, camouflaging with its neighbors — some aged, brownish, rarely-visited stores — part of the reason that my mom and I haven’t sniffed it out for more than 10 years being crazy foodies! (Shame). Quite ironically, how non-descript and “Spartan” Da Adriano appears to us, a thousands more times that the dishes are crashing my taste buds, making us desperate to come back as if the aroma still lingers in our mouth! Honestly, I’m not a big fan of Italian food and Da Adriano is the FIRST authentic Italian restaurant that I’ve ever been to, and it completely overturns my stereotypes of Italian cuisine as only pizza and pasta. On the shingle, “CAFFÉ” “FOCACERRIA” and “BOTTEGA” rest peacefully with the super-stylish italic title “Da Adriano” (that signatural vibe literally steals my heart!), give that little space a bit more coziness and romance, and maybe some unique hometown memories for the Italians here in Big Apple. This is not a place where you could order a full table of lavish Michellein dishes to regale your friends or colleagues, but rather, it would always be the first and only option popping out of your mind when you are just off from work or study, and want to sit down and relax, put away your thoughts, savor and taste some not-so-fancy but satisfying enough meals. As simple as a plate of spinach, feta cheese and spaghetti, or a bowl of macaroni with black olives and mushrooms. Or a chunk of lasagna, my favorite. Pasta is absolutely a major highlight. Not only does its variety dazzles me, homemade also adds an extra flavor. I can savor the tenderness yet chewiness of spaghetti, the smoothness and “fast-melting” of pappardelle, the doughiness and richness of gnocchi, the firmness yet sponginess of macaroni, but most unparalleled of all: lasagna. Lack of any word to describe, lasagna perfectly illustrates the highest realm of detectable flavor: the sizzling slow-cooked ragù with fresh tomato sauce drizzle from the top, concealing the warmness and richness of the inside — alternating layers of flaky pasta sheets, buttery bechamel sauce, zesty ground beef, and melted mozzarella. You probably don’t know what’s the best thing in the world, but I do. It’s when the steam, combined with mild fragrance, cracks out the lasagna and wafts through my nose; it’s when all those alluring colors glisten together, some layer over others — scallion-green, tomato-red, meat-brown, flour-yellow and cream-white… It’s when the fork cuts right through the middle, and scoups up a complete set of layers and seasonings, and all that goes into my mouth… Yum! I feel like the entire world has frozen for that moment… The tomato juice, the beef confetti, the buttermilk jelly melted together with the soft tagliatelle, along with the parmigiana reggiana sprinkles on top, caramelized my tongue, soothened my mind and took me to another kingdom that I have yet to discover. All I recall was the exceptional look, smell and taste of that lasagna. Healing. Tiny but delicate, that’s all I need: it revives my senses that were fallen asleep long long ago, it brings up those brief moments of joy and tranquility that were once part of my life, it simply punches me in the face and reminds me of the importance of smelling the rose. It’s not just the food itself that enchants me, more beyond, it’s the instant vibration, the connection and the resonation with the food that instills meaning back to my soul. I feel fulfilled when I eat something I truly enjoy (not for any other purposes), how amazing.

Great addition to the area. Food was fresh and authentic, service was attentive and friendly. We were especially blown away by their quinoa lentil salad that tasted as good as it looked!

Google
Unlock 2 new gem cuisines: crab meat pasta (wonderful tomato salsa infused with the fresh taste of seafood and crespelle-filled with bechamel, ricotta and spinach (a perfect alternative for lasagna, less heavy but more creamy!) It’s a pity… forgot to take any beautiful photos… too eager to eat!!! It was a very busy night, but the service was still very satisfying! Thx for the delicious fruit tart after our main courses! Ps: the only imperfect thing would be the texture of the rigatoni — which is supposed to be “Al dente”, meaning firm but still tender; however, from my last experience, the pasta was a bit too hard, which could be done better with a little more patience and care, but overall nice! Yelp
Love this place! The pasta is always perfectly al dente and the sandwiches are always delicious. The owners and staff are super welcoming -- cannot get better service anywhere in NYC. Definitely a new neighborhood staple.

Yelp
This place is Authentic & Phenomenal! From the Drinks, to the appetizers all the way to the main courses and desserts it is a 10/10 experience. Service was impeccable - refilled champagne complimentary, gave extra focaccia bread, and when we only ordered coffee for dessert they gave us a complimentary tiramisu!!! The staff is very kind and quick and the owner is a true gentleman. The ambiance is beautiful regardless of you sit inside or out, this is a must try! *Recommend going early

Yelp
From the moment you step inside, you're embraced by a warm ambiance with music that sets the perfect mood. The service is impeccable, with attentive and friendly staff. Every dish is absolutely delicious, showcasing authentic flavors and fresh ingredients. I absolutely love this restaurant and highly recommend it.

Yelp
Lovely neighborhood joint. Decent selection of wine and homemade pasta. Cute ambience that resembles cafes in Europe. Only complaint is price point which is an upper east problem. Enjoyed our meal and will be back.

Yelp
Excellent and fast service. Delicious food & quick bites! Fresh and laid back environment. Recommend!!!

Yelp
Very nice and new upper East side joint which is bound to be a staple for all ages. Great cup of coffee, nice food and drinks selection. Crew is very caring and ready to help!

Yelp
Outstanding addition to not only the neighborhood but all of NYC! So authentic, quality, understated - just classic Tuscan vibes. My wife and I are both gluten free but we ate the focaccia as well as the pastas since they are made with flour from Italy and not the crap we have here in America. Meatballs were a standout, along with the cacio e Pepe. Of course, dipping the focaccia in the pasta sauce after too. Spritz's were great too. Several more dishes to try the next time (including coffee + dessert) so very much so looking forward to it! Adriano was a great guy and same with the staff. Very excited to have Da Adriano in NY!

Yelp
Da Adriano's--This is like being magically transported to ITALY. The food, the service, the staff, so nice. The chef-owner, Adriano, may stop by your table-You will feel like you're away, on vacation. I waited to write my review until I had my 2nd visit. At My first visit, a few weeks ago, I enjoyed the homemade pasta, Cacio e Pepe ...I had been craving it, and this did satisfy my craving. It was hard to visit a second time and not order one of the homemade pasta dishes, but, I wanted to try "Adriano's salad", because during my first visit, the lady at the nearby table highly recommended it, saying it was really good. And, I concur!! I enjoyed Adriano's salad very much, all yummy ingredients: white meat chicken breast, little tomatoes, so full of flavor, sliced avocado, walnuts, a bit of goat cheese, fresh spinach; fresh raspberries ...all so nice...and next time I will ask for a little bit more dressing. I'm not even a big dressing person, but this was a wonderful Dijon vinaigrette, and I would've liked just a tiny bit more because it was so good on the fresh spinach greens. The fresh raspberries were a delightful surprise, flavorful and perfect. I loved this salad. And, this salad is also available for easy, quick take-out...see photos. I also ordered one of the side orders--the roasted carrots. Mmmm, I loved them, and I look forward to enjoying them again, soon. Simple, flavorful carrots, roasted to perfection, and also making me feel like I am on a nice vacation. I could enjoy these roasted carrots anytime, day, night, snack. I'd love to eat these at the movies, too!! Popcorn? Not today, May I have the roasted carrots please? :). I WISH!! Food for thought...I just might take out the roasted carrots and bring them to the movies! Yes, I'm serious. Carrots may be my no-guilt almost candy. LOL...I'll have to post a photo IF I do this!! Stay tuned. And, with about five tables, plus outside seating, plus the window seating...I think about 5 or six window seats/individual stools--it was a lovely and delicious surprise when Chef Adriano brought his homemade Foccaccia bread to each table. I'm telling you, I felt like I was on vacation in Italy. See my photos please, to see the 2 pieces of homemade Foccaccia brought to the table. Very special, and, very good!! And, The homemade croissant was also very, very good. I'll let you be surprised...I'll just say be sure to try one, if they haven't sold out. And I enjoyed the artful cappuccino. The homemade tiramisu was very good. Credit cards are accepted, including both, Apple Pay, AND Google Pay. Something to keep in mind--GENERALLY SPEAKING, for long-time restaurants and brand new restaurants, these are challenging times, so please be mindful that most, if not all restaurants that accept credit cards are charged a fee every time a cc is used. So, please consider, maybe paying in cash, every once in a while, to help out the hardworking restaurantuers. Thank you. I intend to joyfully work my way through the menu!! LOL. I saw a yummy looking, homemade rigatoni pasta plate that looked so delicious, and the person eating It told me it was. That might be my next meal but I'm not kidding. I intend to try everything on this menu. I have to try to get here for breakfast, because everything -- lunch and dinner--has been so yummy, and I'm curious to see what Chef Adriano does for his breakfast menu. Oh, THERE IS FRESH OJ!! And goodies after the meal--the pine nut cookies are divine, as light as air. The homemade tiramisu was very nice. And so was the almond biscotti. If you dine here, please post food photos :) And, to sum up: YES!!! You should eat here! Wish you could go on vacation right now, but can't??! Visit Da Adriano's and FEEL LIKE YOU'RE ON VACATION.

Yelp
5 stars for incredible service!! Adriano himself waited on us personally and gave us a couple free bites in true Italian form! Cacio e Pepe was fresh and some of the best I've found outside of Rome. Small and quaint, but not crowded and able to take a table for 2 around 7 pm on a weeknight with no issues. Quite pricey, but this is the UES. Looking forward to try a morning coffee & cornetto soon!

Yelp
Great addition to the neighborhood. Friendly service. Great Italian soundtrack and fabulous food - the caprese salad with fresh tomatoes and authentic burrata (firm outside and creamy inside) topped with fresh basil- the caccio e pepe is delicious - the best I've ever tasted outside of Rome) homemade al dente with a bit of cheese - creamy but firm consistency - excited to try the focaccia and the veal dish

Yelp
This is a very cute little shop and I would definitely come back but I would try something different next time. I got the mortadella focaccia and the mortadella tasted great but the pistachio pesto was very sweet for some reason and I didn't like it. I also thought the focaccia tasted a little stale. Maybe I came in on an off day.

Yelp
This restaurant is PERFECT for a date night or whenever you are craving incredible and authentic Italian food. We ordered a salad, entree and dessert to share and each was exactly what we hoped for. The Caprese salad was served with huge fresh tomatoes and very fresh mozzarella di Bufala and was seasoned nicely. It was served with a side of their homemade focaccia bread which was ridiculous (good). The rigatoni bolognese was very clearly made with homemade pasta and was loaded with an amazing meat sauce and garnished with parmigiana. Years ago, I spent time in Italy and enjoyed some extraordinary pasta dishes, this is the first spot that really took me back to those restaurants. To round out the meal we had their Torta Al Cioccolato which we loved, it had the moist texture you're looking for but it wasn't overwhelmingly sweet or heavy. It paired nicely with an espresso to end the night. The owner (Adriano) was working and came by a few times to make sure everything was being enjoyed and talking to us about his restaurant, where he's from and what it's like running a restaurant in the area. This was an excellent experience all around. The only disappointing part of this meal was that we didn't take pictures. Bonus: the Dolomiti beer is fantastic!

Mike G.

Yelp
Adriano's food and service is a neighborhood gem! Their homemade pastas and refreshing salads are our go to items to order. Whether you dine in or order take out the food is always consistent and tasty.

Yelp
Amazing Italian food. Some of the best lasagna I've ever had. Highly recommend. The restaurant is TINY so best to have a reservation.

Yelp
This is such a romantic spot. The food is fantastic. The service is absolutely attentive if wanted and respectful of space is want, they read the guest. Cacio e pepe is in my dreams now. Tiramisu was worth a second, ok ok third visit. They are dear and personal. I feel like family. Thank you.

Amanda D.

Yelp
I don't usually leave reviews but this place was such a surprise find and had one of the best cacio e pepe dishes I've ever had in Manhattan. Made a reservation for a friend and I for a Saturday night. Very small place so wouldn't be ideal for a large group but would be great for a date! Great service and delicious food.

Louwane C.

Yelp
Understated and cozy restaurant. Their food was perfect on a cold and rainy evening. There is much attention to detail here and attentive service. I appreciated all of it.

Pooja K.

Yelp
Great new wine bar/cafe in UES. Decent indoor seating and some outdoor seating as well. The vegetarian sandwich was freshly made and the latte was tasty as well. The staff were very friendly and it's a cute addition to the neighborhood. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Doug C.

Yelp
Had a chicken sandwich at timeout market location. Soggy, wilted greens, not very much chicken, too much aioli, and way overpriced. Fooled me once.
google avatar

Olga S.

Yelp
Great nice place with amazing quality dishes. Ambience is wonderful, espresso and pastries are the best!

Cathy C.

Yelp
This sweet adorable restaurant wowed us! We wandered in last night and are thrilled that we did! The salads were delicious with the freshest ingredients, most notably the special tomatoes and the mozzarella that melted in our mouths! The pasta dishes were the best ever! The mushroom/sausage pasta special and the rigatoni al pomodoro (sweet, light sauce & l wanted to drink it) was the best we had ever had with the pasta cooked perfectly! It's the ideal place for small but wildly delicious experience! We highly recommend this 9 table restaurant!!

Levi B.

Yelp
Food - Had the chicken salad, pine nut cookies, and a coffee. Salad was reasonably tasty, but in NYC, nothing memorable, and portion size was quite small for the price. Pine nut cookie was fine, a bit too sweet for my taste. Coffee was nice, tasty, rich and smooth. Again, a lil bit small for price. Place is cute little cafe, quiet, nice smell of coffee. Server was nice.

Jeff K.

Yelp
Charming spot with delicious food and service. Spoke with the Italian owner or manager. Super nice guy. We'll definitely be back.

Jay A.

Yelp
Had to come back and add some pictures crudo di San Daniele and the special veal Spezzatino di vitello Definitely a new favorite spot

Ayda N.

Yelp
This spot feels like you've walked into your grandmas house! It's so cozy and cute. The food here is great too! If you're looking for a casual Italian spot in UES, this is the spot to come to!

Katherine B.

Yelp
Fantastic food, we got the lasagna and Chiantigiana which could have used alittle more salt. The lasagna in my opinion was the best I have had in the city to date (priced way more reasonably than Don Angie) too. The restaurant is smaller so make sure to have a reservation but truly it's a great Italian gem on the ues.

Renny B.

Yelp
Love the food and the atmosphere. The staff is amazing. Chef Adriano himself makes sure every dish comes out perfect. Definitely recommend the focaccia

Michelle P.

Yelp
Food was great I guess. Service was fantastic. Waiter was nice. The female bathroom was tidy.

Daniel G.

Yelp
Excellent new Italian cafe. We tried the chicken focaccia sandwich and the lentil / quinoa salad as our mains and both were delicious. For desert, we tried the tiramisu and the fruit tart. Both were good (and big enough to share) but I think the star of the show for us was the entrees. Reasonable prices; excellent food. Family-owned restaurant. Owners very friendly and welcoming; excellent service.

Peter B.

Yelp
Cute little unpretentious place with delicious pasta dishes, nice wine choices and reasonable prices for Manhattan.

Michelle S.

Yelp
I can't believe there aren't reviews up for this place already. It opened in the old Oaxaca place about a month ago. I put off stopping in because the prices seem a little high for a lunch sandwich. Finally stopped in today and wow, just a plain caprese blew me away. It's enough food to share (and maybe they should sell half sandwiches). The focaccia, which is their whole branding, is insanely good. I love that you get just a tiny bite of lemon on the bread. The rest of the ingredients remind me of what you could get a block away at Felice (creamy mozz and perfectly seasoned ripe tomatoes).

Kari R.

Yelp
The food is to die for and the intimate setting and marvelous service make this an absolutely wonderful evening out. A new favorite! Highly recommend! My daughter says "they ate," which I understand is high praise indeed.

Ashley N.

Yelp
Obsessed with this place!!! Lenox Hill is seriously lacking cute cafes so this place is such a great addition! The lattes were so good and the focaccia sandwich tastes like something straight from Italy. Friendly staff and adorable interior. Check this place out!

Be H.

Yelp
Very disappointed , maybe the chef is on holiday the present chef has no taste buds the amount of salt in the food makes it inedible Very busy..... Well, the service was good. Unfortunately, the food wasn't.

Emily K.

Yelp
A true gem! Beautiful, cute and romantic ambiance with unbelievable food. Homemade bread and pasta, and you can truly taste that. I have been for breakfast, lunch and dinner and they were each 10/10. The service was so great as well.

Marian M.

Yelp
Just tried this out tonight...delicious food, homemade and fresh, lovely owners, great ambience!! Highly Recommend!! Can't wait to go back for lunch or dinner!! Also, looks like they have some delicious Italian pastries to have with equally tasty comfy offerings. Happy to have them in the neighborhood!!!
google avatar

Tracey F.

Yelp
A neighborhood gem! I've stopped in for cookies, paninis, and gazpacho. All truly excellent quality and generous portions. The paninis are very large and come toasted. And the gazpacho is some of the best I've ever had. The staff have been so kind and even help me with the door. Definitely check it out.

Deanna D.

Yelp
Incredible quality food, ingredients, and service. The owner and team clearly care about each detail. They are so welcoming and generous. We are grateful to have this restaurant in our community.

B F.

Yelp
Great addition to the neighborhood. Gives us a vibe like you're in Italy. They were all so friendly and kind fresh orange juice was delicious as well as their coffee, croissants and pasta salad. Make sure to give them a visit.

Joanne C.

Yelp
My husband was lucky to find this restaurant one night for dinner while I was in Sloan Kettering hospital for a few days. He is a very discerning foodie and couldn't believe how amazing the food was at this intimate Italian bistro. He tried many other places for lunches and dinners in the area but was never pleased. This was the only place that he gave high marks to. He is Italian and found the food to be authentic and delicious. As we will be back to the area for doctor visits we look forward to dining there together in the future.

Ellen S.

Yelp
Cute place, ate outside one of two tables. Service was ok. Had to wait a bit until Adriano? came to take our order. My fave is cacio e pepe. Must say there's a competitor resto on 3rd ave I prefer that serves the pasta in a parmesan nest. Faccacio (complimentary) was fair. Will I return? Don't think so.

Nelly B.

Yelp
Real authentic Italian experience pasta, wine, focaccia -- just like I went back to Florence

Adamo G.

Yelp
Super delicious and fresh food and super friendly service. One of the best focaccia selection in NYC and definitely the best in UES.
