NYC Restaurants Impacted by Hurricane Sandy Discuss Lessons Learned to Cope With Coronavirus - Eater NY

"Linda Chen Marini, co-owner of Da Claudio, faced significant challenges during Hurricane Sandy and the COVID-19 pandemic. The restaurant was funded through high-interest loans and online crowdfunding. During the pandemic, it scaled back operations initially but later reopened with reduced staff. They also collaborated with New York Presbyterian Hospital for meal deliveries and received various forms of federal aid." - Alexandra Ilyashov

Google
Yes, Manhattan is home to hundreds of Italian restaurants, and yes, you’ll stumble upon thousands of spots serving pasta, pizza, and wine. But there is only ONE place where you’re welcomed with the kind of warmth, generosity, and attention that makes you feel less like a guest and more like family: Da Claudio. From the moment you step inside, there’s a noticeable difference. The team greets you not with formality, but with genuine hospitality, remembering faces, recalling preferences, and making every guest feel as if their table is the most important one in the room. In a city where service can sometimes feel rushed or transactional, this level of personal care is rare and unforgettable. The food itself is both comforting and contemporary. Classic Italian dishes are elevated with modern touches, seasonal ingredients, and a level of execution that shows the kitchen takes pride in every plate. But Da Claudio isn’t just about the food or the drinks, it’s about the feeling. It’s the warmth of the staff, the buzz of conversation, the balance between casual and elegant. It’s knowing that no matter how many restaurants New York may offer, there’s one place you can always return to and count on a memorable evening. The food may be the icing on the cake, but it’s the heart of the people behind Da Claudio... Linda, Claudio and their staff... that makes it a treasure.

Came in for the chicken Parmesan based on other reviews and was told they don’t make it. Sad. Plenty of other options in the regular and specials menu. I opted for the wagyu beef lasagna ($30). Sounded like a good comfort food option with a quality meat. First came the bread and olive oil. Was nice to have an option with nuts and raisins, something you don’t see all the time. Bread nice and soft too. Lasagna had good taste but had no structure that lasagna should have. It was a mound of dough, sauce and cheese instead of a crafted structure. House made desserts sound nice but didn’t have time to try them out. Next time!

Google
Fabulous food, service, and atmosphere! My daughter had a pasta dish, which was the best pasta we’ve had outside of Italy. I had a watermelon salad that was on the special and that two was better than any watermelon salad I’ve had. The manager was a delight, and our server was precious. If we are back in New York, we would both happily go back there for another meal – and we very rarely go to the same place twice when we’re traveling.

Google
This is a hidden gem. I've been here a few times and each time Ive grown to like it even more. The house white wine is excellent and their cocktails are great. I can't speak highly enough of their food. If you're in the area, it's definitely worth checking out for a happy hour or meal!!

The consistent quality across different dishes is remarkable. The dishes left a lasting impression on my palate. I was very happy with my visit. This place removes the formality and adds warmth instead. The team here is exceptionally good.

(Dined in Mar 2024 and Jan 2025) Love this place. The seafood pasta was amazing and full of seafood. Hazelnut gelato was so hazelnutty! I’ve found my favourite Italian place in NYC and will be back :)

Google
We just had the most perfect meal. Da Claudio does it again! This has been one of my favorite restaurants in NYC for the past 5+ years. I’m from Atlanta and I finally got to bring my daughters for the first time. They loved it as much as I did. Cheers, Jenny, Alix and Deary Brower xx

One of my fave spots in the city for fresh, delicious pasta! The service is great and the portions are decent

Yelp
Foods are great! We come early for dinner, it was very quiet and has a nice vibe. I am traveling from China. Will definitely stop by again next time.

Yelp
Great relaxed place for lunch or a date. Love it. Came with a friend for date and now we came back as married couple. This will be our date spot every time I come back to NYC.

Yelp
Great neighborhood Italian spot. Perfect for hosting larger / more important events. Place is upscale, wide and spacious with attentive service and large tables for bigger groups. Staff was helpful and always kept waters refilled. I got the lasagna which had generous portions of meat and was very tasty. My friends got the wagyu spaghetti, pesto, etc. and all also loved their dishes. Espresso martini was also solid!

Yelp
It was after 10pm on Saturday night and my friends and I were in the mood for Italian. We called Da Claudio to see if they could accommodate our party of 3 and were told to come on in... Ten minutes later, we arrived and were seated quickly. Flor was our server and she took good care of us. We started with an order of Fritto Misto and and a Caesar Salad to share, along with a few glasses of wine. For our entrees, I went with the Black Linguine (Squid ink pasta, head-on prawns, spicy tomato sauce) and it was perfection. My friends both had the Garganelli (wagyu bolognese, parmigiano) and were also very pleased. We finished the meal with an order of chocolate gelato to share, which was the perfect sweet ending to our meal, and very timely as we got it in just as the kitchen was closing! According to their website, Da Claudio sources fresh ingredients local producers and sustainable seafood as well... and it's also worth noting that we found the prices reasonable and portions large. If you find yourself in the area, check this place out!

Yelp

Yelp
What a wonderful dinner with really kind staff. Their commitment to insure we had a great meal and wonderful experience was genuine. We had excellent dishes - both pasta and steak. I highly recommend this place for authentic Italian food.

Yelp
My favorite place to eat in Manhattan by far. The service is incredible, the food is excellent, and the ambiance is perfect. There is no where else around here I would go, given the opportunity.

Yelp
If we could hire the head and sous chef to be our personal chefs we would. The lamb ragu, Carbonara, squid ink pasta and their wagyu bolognese will stop time. Every bite was so flavorful. We savored every bite as we cleaned our plates. The fritto mitso was amazing, but the fried artichokes stole the cake. Just amazing. I can still taste them. We had every flavor of gelato, cherry cannoli and tiramisu.. Wine list was great and our waiter was amazing at pairing. It was clean, with large group accommodations. We will be back!

Yelp
This restaurant was quiet at 9 PM. Perhaps the dinner crowd starts earlier. There were maybe four other tables with people when we arrived so we were seated quickly. Bread with olive oil was provided quickly and a server was by our table to offer drinks. Definitely recommend adding some salt from their grinder to the evoo to elevate the flavor. We ordered a meat and cheese plate to start. The plates we ordered rigatoni and gnocchi came out promptly.

Yelp
Service was amazing, but the food was at best a 2/3. It did have a nice vibe, and great drinks, but I probably wouldn't return for food. If I wanted a place to grab some drinks and chat, definitely a spot.

Yelp
Stopped in for a quick lunch and really glad we did. It is a pretty large restaurant and really nicely decorated. It has a pretty big bar and lots of seating. The owner and server were very friendly. It was not busy as it was a bit late for lunch. They give you some nice soft bread and olive oil which we love. We ordered the beef carpaccio and two grilled chx sandwiches. The carpaccio was soooo good. It had mushrooms and arugula and it really was so flavorful. The sandwiches were fantastic. There was this grilled pepper on it that gave it such a nice flavor profile- a bit sweet but not too sweet. The chicken had been cut so it didn't all spill out when you took a bite which was very nice. It really was a ratty sandwich. If we had more time in NY, I would have come back to try their pasta. If there sandwich and carpaccio were this good, their past had to be really good.

Yelp
Cozy restaurant with classic Italian food. I've sat at the restaurant and gotten takeout out. Both times it was very good. Love the intimate atmosphere and attentive staff. I love the dessert wine Mascato D'Asti and was happy to see it on the menu. Burrata and Garganelli (wagyu bolognese, parmigiano) was very good! Not sure they still offer all these items anymore but would return.
google avatar

Yelp
Awesome spaghetti carbonara! Super quick and friendly service in a cloth napkin atmosphere. Weary travelers staying at the Moxy across the street, this is your haven. The raisin bread at the beginning of the meal was a nice touch.

Yelp
Top tier experience. Ambience was quiet, romantic, and chill. Staff was really friendly. Pasta is the best since my visit to the motherland. Definitely coming back

Yelp
I enjoyed this spot. I was dining alone on a business trip and they were so welcoming. I had a delicious glass of wine and a bowl of wonderful pasta. Worth the stop.

Yelp
I enjoyed a fantastic lunch here today. Special burrata with smoked asparagus comes with a unique smoky presentation and tastes amazing. Bucatini arrabiatta delivered the heat and the shrimp I added were perfectly prepared. Service was warm, friendly, and attentive. Price fit the quality of the food.

Janine A.

Yelp
I'm really baffled by all the high reviews. The food was not good. The service felt very rushed...borderline rude . The atmosphere is eh.
google avatar

Yelp
A bit of a late review, but came here earlier in the summer for a Friday evening dinner. I don't know what it is about FiDi but there aren't a ton of good sit down restaurant in the area. Nonetheless, I felt Da Claudio was ok. I ordered a glass of red wine that I felt was very mid. But perhaps I'm getting more accustomed to natural wine these days which has a very different flavor profile. Don't recall getting any apps which is rare but I ordered the rigatoni which I think had pancetta in it. It was good! Not amazing but solid. we ended with some blood orange sorbet (i believe) which was a nice way to end the meal.

Yelp
An atmosphere of elegance and comfort! Tucked in a narrow alley in the financial district sat this delicious Italian gem. We flew in from California and were dedicated to the food culture NY had to offer. As we stumbled upon Da Claudio we were greeted by our waitress Flora who sat us immediately with menus and waters. We started with the Tirimasu martini then Flora recommended a delicious wine to pair with our entrees. We had the wagu bolognese, calamarata, and the lamb ragu which melted in our mouths. The food is what kept us but what really won us over was the attentiveness from Francisco, a gentlemen from Oaxaca who made sure our needs were met while engaging in conversation with us about the many wonders of the city. Well deserved 5 stars! If you are in the area dining at Da Claudio is a must!

Yelp
Such fantastic atmosphere; relaxing, clean, relaxing music... perfect! Stumbled upon this spot across the street from my hotel... so glad I did. Food, staff and attention to detail was amazing! Food delivery backed up with stellar service! A+++

Yelp
We sat at the bar for a more casual experience. The Fritto Misto was a great starter; The calamari was cooked perfectly and not rubbery at all. I had the Spaghetti Carbonara and was disappointed that it didn't come with a yolk on top! Tried some of my friend's lasagna and was blown away by how good that was, so pretty sure I just ordered the wrong thing. Will get the lasagna if I ever return. Service was attentive! Extra cheese was shaved table-side. Nice bartender.

Yelp
This place has great food and wonderful service. Love the quiet peaceful atmosphere. The ambiance was just what we needed.
google avatar

Isabel P.

Yelp
This place was delicious, beautifully decorated, and with attentive service. I enjoyed the calamari to start, and both our entrees were great sizes. I was able to take some home and have for lunch the next day. The wine list is thoughtful and unpretentious. Such a gem in Fidi!
google avatar

Yelp
This is a restaurant I tried on my first time visiting New York. It was definitely fine dining. We came here on a stormy night. For my appetizer I had the frito misto. It was very good. I'm used to regular calamari so this threw me for a bit of a loop. For my entree I had the veal pasta. This was also very good. The ground veal was very tasty and the pasta was made in house. I enjoyed my entire experience and I would recommend this place to anyone visiting Manhattan.

David B.

Yelp
What a treat! Definitely a hidden gem. Great ambiance. Our server Samantha was wonderful. Great service. The food was delicious!
google avatar

Carmen G.

Yelp
Carpaccio was phenomenal! Simple but fresh and the pecorino mushrooms were a nice flair. Gnocchi was solid but not outstanding. Loved the ambience! Service was aggressively "good". I was feeling a little harassed by the end of the meal and wouldn't have minded a bit of breathing room between dishes.

Yelp
Came here for a birthday dinner for one of my coworkers. Made a reservation online, then called a day before to ask if we can get a booth. Person over the phone said no problem. We get there, no booth. It's alright though, we had a nice table in the middle. Shared some calamari to start. This was good, light and crunchy. Each of us had our own mains. I tried the amatriciana. The rigatoni was perfectly al dente, and the sauce had the the right amount of heat and tanginess. Our server Kasy was amazing! She was very attentive, and made sure we were all taken care of.

Amanda R.

Yelp
The decorations and ambiance are really nice here. Its a large restaurant with plenty of seating. It seems they are more of a seafood Italian spot, a lot more of those options than meat/veggies. The service was pretty good, not friendly but attentive. As far as the food, I was disappointed. I was very excited for the caccio e pepe but it was not good. The pasta was a little hard and since the noodles were thicker it wasn't enjoyable. I understand they cook al dente but, when the noodle is thick it should have gotten an extra minute or two. There was barely any pepper...that's the point of the dish. I had to ask for more pepper, cheese, and add salt and it was just okay. Did not finish it all. Worst part is they packed it in a little cardboard box with no tape and gave no bag so all of it spilled in my bag. Why wouldn't they provide bags? My friend had their carbonara and said it was okay; the pancetta had nice flavor. Their mango iced tea drink is really good. They are pretty pricey it was not worth it to me.
google avatar

Maggie B.

Yelp
I came here for an after dinner drink. On a Wednesday night, the restaurant was not very busy. They have happy hour until 7pm. We sat at the bar, but they also have high top tables for drinks. For happy hour, they have cocktails for $12 and wine for $10. I got a margarita. It was made fresh to order, not from a mix. It was tasty. My sister got the rosemary gimlet and enjoyed it but said the rosemary flavor was very light. She also liked the whiskey sour. The bartender was courteous and attentive. He made sure we got in a final drink order before happy hour ended, which was very thoughtful.

Angie T.

Yelp
Ordered the rigatoni and tiramisu for takeout (45 total). The food was solid, but nothing to write home about, especially given the price point. The guanciale in the rigatoni was a bit chewy (but haven't had guanciale enough to know what the "gold standard" is), and for $27 I do wish they were more generous with the quantity of protein. The tiramisu was good - the ladyfingers were not soaked in enough espresso (if any?) but the mascarpone was fluffy and light. Service was friendly and efficient (I called and the gentleman said the food would be ready in 15 mins). Ambiance inside was a bit dark but don't have much to say given that I ordered to go. Overall a solid spot but in a city with such a competitive Italian food scene it is tough to call Da Claudio a standout. With that being said, I would come back again if I'm ever craving pasta and don't want to stray too far from my apartment.

Yelp
Da Claudio is a very nice spot near Fulton Street Station. It's great for lunch and nice for a work lunch or a quick lunch with a friend. I always get the Black Linguine (squid ink pasta) with Prawns (head on) I think it is the tastiest dish and I have been getting it for years now. My only complaint is that I would like maybe one more prawn because they are so delicious! Service is quick and friendly and nice art work on the walls too.
google avatar

Yelp
A hidden gem in the Financial District, Da Claudio will be seeing me again and hopefully soon! I was meeting friends for dinner but arrived early--by 30 minutes. Carrying heavy bags with aching feet, I was so grateful that the host/manager allowed me to sit before my friends arrived. Happy Hour is offered daily through 7 PM with some great food, beer/wine and cocktail choices. I began with my favorite--A Rose from Italy and it was delicious. Once my friends arrived, we placed our order with the waitstaff. He was very helpful by offering recommendations and suggestions. I decided to go with the Scallopine Pollo which was boneless chicken breast sauteed in a caper white wine sauce. It was accompanied by potatoes and roasted vegetables. Not only was the portion generous, but the meal itself was executed quite well and flavorful. I was satisfied with my selection. My friends ordered Risotto and a pasta dish respectively and gave it two thumbs up. We were too full for dessert, but definitely next time. I really enjoyed Da Claudio and eager to return again. If in the Fidi area, check them out!

Yelp
Food was delicious, ambience was lovely, and the staff was attentive and efficient. What more could you need?

Yelp
A neighborhood gem. We enjoyed the appetizers, drinks, and dishes. We had the seafood pasta and loved that it contained so much seafood. Tasty and the sauce was great. 8/10 The carbonara was yummy and solid. 7.5/10 The squid ink pasta with shrimp was tasty and al dente. 8.5/10. We also ordered calamari and meat & cheese apps and those didnt disappoint. 8.5/10 Loved that they gave us wet napkins so that we could enjoy our seafood pastas without dirtying our hands. Def recommend!

Yelp
We arrived in the City at 2 PM and made our way to the Beekman downtown. After getting set-up in our rooms, we made our way to Da Claudio, right around the corner. We were all starved, and were seated promptly just as the restaurant opened. Very cordial and helpful service. We ordered food quickly, all 5 of us going for pasta. One order of gnocchi, one spaghetti, one spinach fettucini with sausage, one lasagna and one mostacioli. All of these were great--especially the gnocchi, the lasagna and the spinach fettucini. Really great. This is the proof that the best italian food in America is in New York. The subtlety and complexity of flavors is just fantastic. Try to get to Da Claudio as soon as you can.
google avatar

Andrew L.

Yelp
Had dinner on an early Friday evening at Da Claudio when it was quiet (much more livelier by the time we were leaving). Very friendly service in a casual setting. Based on some of the other Yelp reviews, figured that we had to try the Lasagna and we weren't disappointed. It was a very nice version. The Caesar Salad was food and the Tiramisu and the Chocolate Mousse Cake for dessert provided a nice finish. Worth a visit!
google avatar

Laura Z.

Yelp
TLDR: solid food but would not get the squid ink pasta I loved the appetizers at Da Claudio. Each one was prettty much a banger - don't think you can really go wrong with any. The espresso martinis are also solid. I got the squid ink pasta for my main. The noodles themselves were good and chewy, but it tasted a bit like the seafood had gone bad. Would not recommend this dish.

Sean L.

Yelp
I came here a while back with my girlfriend and it is a restaurant that I had anticipated going to for the longest time. To preface, I will start off by saying the high expectations met by disappointment, along with there being lots of other Italian restaurants in the city, might be the reason for the negative review. The ambiance wasn't the worst, but there are restaurants I've been to that have had a better ambiance, especially at this price point. To start off, we got the piatto del salumiere for 2, as it was recommended by the server, and the parmigiana di melanzane. Though the dishes were not bad, they were very underwhelming, with the assorted cured meat and cheese plate being similar to that which I made with cured meat and cheese from a supermarket. The only redeeming quality of it was the walnuts, which appear to have been glazed in some sweet sugar-like glaze. The parmigiana di melanzane was also not bad but was very forgetable. For the primi, I ordered myself the garganelli and my girlfriend the black linguine, which I had heard was superb so I decided to let her try it. However, upon trying both pastas, I was immediately disappointed. The garganelli was very bland and very difficult to eat after a few bites, and the black linguine had a strong umami, almost fishy taste. It was very unpleasant to eat and I just remember feeling bad for ordering her the black linguine as she is not a very picky eater, but she didn't seem to be very appetized by the dish. The service wasn't too bad and the waiter was very nice, but it was quite slow given each server only had one or two tables to take care of. Overall, I did not personally find the experience to be worth it.

Mary K.

Yelp
4.5 Stars. Had the most delicious lunch on a Friday here a few weeks ago, and the service was excellent. We started with the Piatto del Salumiere and Fritto Misto; I had the Eggplant Parm as my main course which was delicious, and we finished with some Italian cookies and dessert wine. the wine lie is, as one would expect, all Italian wines - and the sommelier knew their winelist very well, and easily made recommendations for us based on our preferences. I am only dropping 1/2 a star because of the dining room acoustics; it was was quite loud in there, making it difficult to hear which was surprising for lunchtime. But the quality of food and service definitely make up for that!

Yelp
This was a late birthday celebration with a very good friend and I absolutely loved my experience and would definitely come again and highly recommend this fantastic restaurant. Each dish was very yummy and unique. It was lovely the restaurant had happy hour as well, me and my friend tried their bruschetta which was very tasty and fresh, light and refreshing to start!! Their bread before that came out with the olive oil was delicious as well, I so wanted to eat all of the bread. Next we had their grilled octopus on some bean sauce which was a bit saltier than I liked but really good all the same, tender and cooked perfectly! We ordered two main dishes; gnocchi which had a wow and amazingly made pesto sauce and the gnocchi was absolutely the best I've eaten, light as marshmallow and not heavy or super doughy....so happy eating all the dishes. I wish there was more pine nuts in the pesto gnocchi dish but those nuts are sure expensive. Last was the squid ink dish which of course I had to order because we both love squid ink and it was another delicious dish, sauce and those big shrimp sooo yummy. A must visit

Luz R.

Yelp
The service and food were 10/10. We ordered the eggplant/bean soup, the crab ricotta ravioli, the bucatini arrabbiata, fusilli avellinesi & they were all so delicious! The ambiance was just perfect as it had dim lights with candles on each table. Really made it perfect for date night.

Yelp
I came here with my son and husband. This place was recommended everywhere so I thought we would give it a try. I was thoroughly unimpressed. The restaurant was very empty. There were a few tables filled with what I can only imagine were regulars because of the attention they were given. Our service was the bare minimum - waitress who was also the hostess ( wearing a mask for covid) stopped by maybe 3 times. We had a reservation but there was no acknowledgment of it. The food was ok. The cocktail list was not interesting so I ordered the limited wine per glass for $ 20 a glass. To be clear price is not my concern. the entire vibe was just wrong and i wanted out of there asap. Pop art on the walls with low lighting . Our seat was smack in the middle of the room with another table 2 inches from us. The food will not bring me back. Go to little italy and enjoy authentic tasting food and well planned atmospheres .. I have no idea what this place was going for and how they are so highly recommended.

Yelp
Delicious food and beautiful ambience. I come here every time I'm in NYC. I love this place!

Yelp
This place never disappoints and the owner is usually there which is always a good sign making sure your food is delicious. My go to dish is the chicken scallopini.

Anil S.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place. Have never been disappointed with the food and drinks. Claudio and his staff service and ambiance are 2nd to none. Highly recommended

Yelp
Everything was wonderful! I would return again. The staff were nice and attentive and the food was spectacular

Yelp
Spectacular! It lives up to the reviews! Had a large shindig at this place and everything was fantastic. The drinks were exotic, I can't recite the names but I felt like I was on an island with the mango drink I had. The arugula salad was perfectly salted, my eggplant part was phenomenal and the pear sorbet was so unique. I was totally blown away, it's the best Italian food in the area for sure! The ambiance is great and it was a packed Thursday night, this place is a hot spot for sure.

Yelp
Such good food! Service is excellent. Ambiance is romantic and fancy. Love coming here to celebrate special occasions (anniversary, birthday). The staff is super friendly and accommodating. Very attentive to make your dining experience unforgettable. Highly recommend.
