The 13 Best Handroll Bars In NYC

"Daigo isn't trying to be "inventive" or creative, and we find that kind of refreshing. The focus at this tiny counter in the Dekalb Market is on quality fish, really good rice, and crispy nori. Unlike some other handroll spots, you order a la carte here rather than committing to a full omakase situation. You can also order everything on the menu as a rice cup—but rolls are really the move here. Eat them quickly, so the nori stays super crispy." - neha talreja, bryan kim, molly fitzpatrick

The Best Places To Eat In DeKalb Market Hall

"Of the stalls that are outposts of well-known, bigger operations, Daigo is closest to the original. It’s also pretty luxe for a food hall—maki and hand rolls with yuzu kosho and shiso are made to order, and the scallop sashimi is a rather elegant appetizer to eat at a picnic table. The prices match. A light lunch of two rolls will run you anywhere from $16-$24. That might be why there’s never a rush despite how good it is. " - neha talreja, will hartman, bryan kim, willa moore

Google
Such a great little spot! The fish tastes SO fresh and the presentation is really simple and lovely. The service was also friendly and fast! I got the tuna and the ikura hand rolls and I can’t wait to go back

Gloria

Google
So glad they are open until 10pm!! A lot of salmon in salmon daigo, and a lot of shrimp in shrimp daigo. Delicious!!

Annie Zang

Google
Service is nice but the sushi really isn’t good at all. I’ve been here before a while ago and wasn’t impressed. Came back for lunch to give it another try and was reminded again why I didn’t like it the first time. The rice was a terrible texture, too sticky and warm, and not well seasoned like sushi rice should be. The fish itself was ok, but overall overpriced for what you get. Leaving this review so I’m not tempted to come back. Look I eat a lot of sushi at various price levels and this really is not it.

Michael Skolnik

Google
This is a great go-to spot for sushi on the regular. The fish is always fresh and the price is great. The tuna koji roll is perfect. No soy sauce or wasabi needed. I order from here at least once a week.

Juan B

Google
We had the tuna, salmon and avocado, and yellowtail handrolls at Daigo, and they kindly cut them into sushi for us. Everything was fresh, delicious, and served quickly—perfect for a quick bite before heading back to shopping. I loved the casual sushi counter vibes and the friendly staff!

Linden Cahill

Google
I went to Daigo with my family a few weeks ago and have been ruminating about writing a review because of how mixed my experience was. First off: the sushi was INCREDIBLE. The chefs were quick, professional, and you can tell they are working with high quality ingredients. The server who brought me my miso soup was incredibly kind, sweet, and efficient. However thats where my high marks end. As I was ordering, the man at the counter (older asain man) seemed to barely want me there. Not only did he never make eye contact or greet me kindly (not even a smile) he cut me off several times in the ordering process. He sighed loudly and it made me feel awful for being there. I dont know if the staff is overworked or if something happened that day but I never felt so unwelcomed at a restaurant. Additionally, there was a roach crawling on the menu screen when I ordered. Absolutely unacceptable. Listen, the food was great but its new york and there's good sushi anywhere. The least you can do is not have roaches and a bad attitude. Not going back for a 9 dollar roachroll.

Nicole Neiman

Google
Best pick me up on a rainy day. Their sushi is fresh, affordable and delicious! Highly recommend if you are in city point and are craving a salmon avocado roll at 6pm like me 🤣 🍣

Jose Alonso

Google
Just tried them for lunch today, ate three rolls and a miso soup (lunch special combo price). Everything was great, even the crew was super nice to all the clients. You can order to take out (either directly at the cashier or via their website), or dine in their bar area. Will 100% come back for more!

Yelp
Stumbled upon this STANDING hand roll bar and I am so happy that I did! The fish was fresh and the service was great. I ordered 3 rolls and a miso soup. It was PACKED. They had a lot of solo standing eaters and a side table for families / friends. They have a lot of options to choose from when it comes to hand or cut rolls. I went with the yellowtail, scallop yuzu and spicy salmon. The yellowtail and spicy salmon were my favorite. The scallop one was okay, I've had better. I would love to try to blue crab hand roll next. Great spot for huge, fresh hand rolls in BK!
google avatar

Yelp
Good place for handrolls. My favorite are the scallop yuzu and the botan ebi. Portions of seafood are generous and fresh tasting. There are no seats and it's a standing bar. Service is speedy and they have great lunch special deals. Recommended!

Yelp
Fresh, authentic sushi and handrolls with little wait time. Dekalb Market truly has something for everyone and if you're me, that includes Daigo Hand Roll Bar. As the name implies, there is a bar to sit at with chopsticks, plates and napkins ready for you. Staff is friendly as well. The yellowtail tuna roll with scallion is a must-try. Fresh fish, filling but won't leave you feeling bloated and a good price point. I appreciate how the rolls here are also served at traditional sushi temperature. This is a place you come back to, even if you want to try other vendors, because it's just so good!
google avatar

Scott H.

Yelp
My friend reports that the sushi was excellent. The service was extremely fast and super friendly. The prices were reasonable, they have a sushi bar, and there's plenty of seating in the dekalb Market Hall if your dining with someone else. All in all this place is a great dining choice.
google avatar

Harley S.

Yelp
What do you get when you combine: - Fish served way too cold - Fish that's chopped up rather than served fresh and tender - Rolls that are half the size of most sushi restaurants and - High prices You get Daigo Hand Roll Bar.
google avatar

Mandisa N.

Yelp
Not kidding when I say this place has some of the best spicy tuna I've ever had. Would 10/10 recommend you try that when you visit. The seating layout feels very traditional (at least what I think) which is fun in such a busy marketplace.
google avatar

Yelp
First time at this small sushi chain located in the basement food hall of mall. Minimalistic sushi/roll options. You can choose between cut or roll. I chose all cuts for salmon avacado and mackerel rolls. Tasty sushi with good soy sauce, sliced ginger, and most likely horse radish wasabi. I'd eat here often next time. I like their aesthetic but there's no stools for dining booths which makes sense. Their food isn't meant for long eating periods. Recommend find seating in the open area. Definitely worth a try.

Yelp
Daigo! I love this place and I remember when I first saw it at the newly opened Dekalb Market food hall back in 2017. Every time I'm in the vicinity I have to have a hand roll here. It's a very casual space, no tables or chairs -- you walk up, order your food to go or to stay, and if to stay you stand at one of the counter spaces. Your chef will prepare your rolls and hand them to you one by one as they're made! So fresh and delicious. My absolute favorites to order: -Miso soup (careful it's scalding hot and I've burned my tongue many a time) -Spicy tuna hand roll -Yellowtail scallion -Seared salmon with yuzu -Snow crab avocado What makes these hand rolls so incredible besides the quality of the fish is the nori. It must be imported because the taste and texture is top notch. Perfectly crisp and light, how nori should taste. Just get all the hand rolls...

Yelp
I've had a quick work lunch at Daigo Handroll Bar several times over the past few weeks. It is located in DeKalb Market Hall, pretty close to the Trader Joe's side. The lunch special at its baseline is a little pricey, and there are a lot of price add-ons for particular rolls, which makes it a not cheap lunch. The service is really fast and fresh. The miso soup that comes with the lunch special is good, and the rolls are a good portion size. I do feel that the rice is not seasoned to my particular taste, but it's not bad. Overall, this is a good choice for a quick lunch in the area. I've been several times and do keep returning!

Yelp
Daigo is a surprisingly solid sushi spot in Dekalb market. The fish tastes fresh and the rolls always satisfy. You stand at the countertop tables to dine, so you don't particularly feel like lingering around for too long, but it's a great little place for when you want something fresh and not too heavy. Prices are reasonable for good quality sushi and I haven't had a disappointing roll yet. Will definitely return next time I'm in the market and craving sushi!

Yelp
It was extremely hard to find this hand roll bar in the market. I originally saw it on yelp and wanted to try it when I was working in the area, and I walked around for over half an hour before finding it. It's definitely quite hidden, in the middle of the market. I wish the market had a guide or map because there's too many different vendors squished together. Onto the food - they have a weekday lunch special. The two rolls plus a bottle of water was $20 so honestly the lunch special was still expensive but the hand rolls were delicious and it was a unique setup where each customer stands at the bar and eats as they are served.
google avatar

Jennie K.

Yelp
I really liked this handroll bar. I like to try different spots and this may be close to the top of my list! I went when it wasn't crowded so the service was very fast. I got 2 handrolls and a water bottle $12 as a lunch special. Both the spicy tuna and seared salmon were delicious! There's a bar wrapped around the stand where you could stand and eat. It is clean and looks nice. Great for a quick bite or appetizer if you're making your way around the food hall! I highly recommend.

Amy A.

Yelp
Super nice staff! We originally planned to sit at the bar, but there were no chairs available, so we got our food to go and found a spot nearby to eat. The portions were a little on the smaller side, but everything tasted great.
google avatar

Tiffany L.

Yelp
Simple but good. I got three rolls: seared salmon, scallop with yuzu, and yellowtail scallion. The seared salmon was the best - so tasty I didn't need any wasabi or soy sauce. Portion size is a bit small but the fish is really fresh. Already thinking about coming back to try the rest of the menu.
google avatar

Yolonda R.

Yelp
Good service, fresh food. Perfect for satisfying a sushi craving while shopping. Will return again.
google avatar

Yelp
Never fails sushi is always fresh, service is speedy, the ambiance is calm and welcoming amongst the noisy backsplash of the market.

Yelp
Came to Dekalb market just to try this spot. We went around 12pm on a Saturday and there were plenty of standing counter spots open. We ordered Toro, botan ebi, and scallop yuzu hand rolls which came out literally in 30 seconds. Every single one was excellent!! From freshness to flavor to the quality of the rice, and prices were very reasonable when considering that everything is a little overpriced in dekalb market. My personal favorite was the scallop yuzu but my bf really liked how well the shiso leaves went in the botan ebi. Would def come back!

Quin S.

Yelp
Picture this - you're a growing lad who has just walked 20 thousand steps. Hungry AF in downtown Brooklyn. You wander down some slippery stairs and almost eat shit. You find Daigo Handroll Bar in this slightly crowded food court. You order a spicy tuna roll, miso soup, and a coke to hold you over for the jaunt home. What you are given exceeds all expectations. The miso soup is scalding when it comes out but once it cools a little is great. The roll you are given is like heaven in your hand. The rice is still warm and seasoned to perfection. The tuna is the perfect consistency and tastes so fresh and yum. You take a bite and melt. The rest is a blur but I can't recommend it enough. Just hope there's a spot for you to sit.
google avatar

Heather R.

Yelp
I am addicted to these restaurants yummy food !!! Never go wrong with the fresh fish and veggies love it !!
google avatar

Yelp
So I just happened about this place while walking through the Dekalb market hall and wow this place doesn't disappoint! I got the cut hand rolls which are like sushi roll pieces. I find these easier to eat and more filling. I got the crab and the toro roll both just tasted super fresh and their set up is nice. This place is also a great value. If your nearby you should try this place:
google avatar

Sandra G.

Yelp
Quick ordering and fast! You wait for your order in less than 5 minutes! You can take it to go or eat along side the bar. I ordered 2 rolls and there's no dining in but you can sit at a bigger general section nearby. The area has nice music and you can check out other spots as well.
google avatar

Caili C.

Yelp
Ordered pick up with some coworkers for a quick lunch when we were craving sushi and it hit the spot! We ordered through their website and within 5 minutes, it was ready for pick up. The location itself is in the Dekalb Food Hall which makes it easy to grab other food or desserts as well. For my sushi, I rolled a 2 roll combo (salmon avocado and hamachi scallion) with miso soup and added on an Ikura roll. The sushi is solid and fresh and The rolls are a pretty good side as well! I do wish the ikura hand roll had more ikura but for the price and convenience, it can't be b

Yelp
We didn't head to City Point with the intention of eating at Daigo, but the food stall and menu were so inviting we decided to try a couple hand rolls to see what it was all about. Service was quick and friendly. I opted for the spicy salmon and the scallop with yuzu koshu. Both were perfectly executed with crunchy nori, fresh fish and an absolute explosion of flavors. Zero complaints. Coming from LA we eat a lot of hand rolls out there and Daigo rivaled some of the best I've had on the west coast. Definitely worth a try.
google avatar

Jane S.

Yelp
Love a quick and easy bite and this is perfect! Fresh quality ingredients, simple and delicious. Recommend the toro or yellowtail scallion, botan ebi and spicy scallop. So good.
google avatar

Mei C.

Yelp
Located within Dekalb Market Food hall- this sushi bar has attracted a long line of patrons waiting for their sushi and hand-rolls. Ordered the Salmon roll and Eel Avocado roll (2 hand-roll for $16). Wait time wasn't too long, got my rolls packaged inside their takeout box with soy sauce on the side. Rolls tasted super fresh and yummy- a bit smaller than I would've hoped- overall, I enjoyed my pricey hand-rolls.
google avatar

Tokunbo Aka TJ J.

Yelp
I enjoy the sushi every time I order from there. The service is nice and staff are professional. Cool spot. The environment is always busy. Check them out!
google avatar

Lisa L.

Yelp
Decent for the price. $9 for toro handroll and $7.5 for the scallop with yuzu. I say that is pretty damn affordable for premium ingredients. It was also fast service and if you go during lunch and spend more than $15, you get a free bottle of water or a miso soup. This place really knows how to do business. For taste, it was overall okay. It tasted fresh but it was missing some oomph to me, but if you're in the mood for something quick, this hits the spot.
google avatar

Eric F.

Yelp
My wife and I ordered several hand rolls including uni, hamachi and tori. The seafood was all very fresh, but the nori was slightly soggy and tough to break apart. We did have to wait a little bit from picking up until actually eating, so these may have tasted better when eaten right away.
google avatar

Gab G.

Yelp
Daigo is located inside the dekalb food hall. Stopped in before a movie at Alamo and grabbed some sushi. Spicy tuna, toro, salmon avocado and snow crab avocado were all solid. Service was friendly.
google avatar

Shelby C.

Yelp
Love it! Came here a feed years back when this area opened and my gut was not mature enough to brave the variety of cuisines. This place was solid. Clean simple and too the point of sushi made right. There is standing go only for the bar area around the kitchen and once your roll/dish is completed you are handed goodness your indulge upon. Wish I'd tried this place sooner. I ordered the jumbo shrimp hand roll, the snow crab and veggie. While I only enjoyed the jumbo shrimp perhaps with an even more mature palate the other two could work out.
google avatar

Tiffany J.

Yelp
Daigo's hand rolls are quite delicious - the rolls tasted super fresh and the quality of ingredients was solid. The service was also pretty nice - if you choose to dine in, the sushi chef will space out your order and wait until you've finished to hand you the next one. Our favorites were the seared shrimp and eel and avocado. Overall, it's a solid option for sushi cravings! I'd definitely recommend to check it out. What we ordered: Seared salmon hand roll Eel and avocado hand roll Tuna hand roll Snow crab hand roll Salmon and avocado hand roll Cucumber and avocado hand roll Seared shrimp hand roll Seared shrimp rice bowl
google avatar

Chase T.

Yelp
The rolls are smaller than before. When they first opened the rolls were a nice size. Now theyre skinny. Broke my heart.
google avatar

Edward K.

Yelp
I genuinely do not understand all the good reviews here, the seaweed is soggy (I ate there as soon as it was handed to me), fish is low quality, rice isn't properly made. I tried the 3 roll lunch special & got one of them as cut, that was a little better but the knife must be dull cause the rolls were closer to a triangle than a circle. More importantly, the value is just not there and there's just so many better sushi places in NYC
google avatar

Leilani S.

Yelp
The sushi is delicious here! The menu is easy to read, the workers are nice and there's seating at the bar to eat which is nice. Got the jumbo shrimp roll and it is so fresh and so flavorful! Like you do not even need soy sauce! The sushi was nice and cold, the presentation was nice and the food came out quick! I only have one downfall- the price. It's pretty pricy for what you get but I guess it's quality over quantity? Idk but if it wasn't so expensive for a little bit of sushi I'd be coming back more often
google avatar

Juan G.

Yelp
This was a wonderful surprise. I enjoy every Sunday walking around after class and trying something new in the food court and this was a nice surprise. It's simple to decide what to order and feels fresh when you bite into it. The staff is really good accommodating your preference. Comes nicely package for you to take to go or stick around and have a seat.
google avatar

Sharmila T.

Yelp
The ambience was cool I def would have liked a chair. But the rolls were made one by one after I finished eating so it was good! All around rolls tasted very fresh it was hard to know which one I was eating.
google avatar

Laur L.

Yelp
Was out on a date and we went into the food hall in the City Point building. Was craving sushi and wanted an uni and ikura fix (you can't find uni in Ithaca I stg). So I got an uni handroll and a salmon ikura handroll. Look, the food was good don't get me wrong but I really can't justify the price (and I'm saying this as someone who got treated to the meal) even if it's more expensive fish. It was two handrolls that when put together were maybe the length of a smaller maki roll for about ~$30. This is a casual eatery not like some rando omakase either. O well.
google avatar

Alexis B.

Yelp
I liked Daigo so much I had it twice in a single weekend. I never do that. But the food is so simple and soooooo delicious. The rice is perfect and warm, and the seaweed stays so crispy and eat to bite right through. And the seafood - of course - was delicious. I had a salmon avocado handroll and a yellowtail/scallion handroll. Both were excellent. I'd eat them again right now.
google avatar

Chris B.

Yelp
Our favorite place to stop by in Dekalb market. Their rolls are just so fresh and so good, and surprisingly cheap for the quality. No much else to add, if you enjoy sushi, swing on by.
google avatar

Su L.

Yelp
Daigo is a casual hand roll sushi place that we discovered during the pandemic. We've ordered from here consistently throughout the last year. This place has been a great go-to fix for sushi, especially during the winter in NYC when it's been too cold to go out for outdoor dining. They have two locations in Brooklyn, one in Dekalb Market Hall, and one in Gowanus. Prices are cheap and the quality is very good.
google avatar

Ruby D.

Yelp
Daigo handroll bar is located inside of Dekalb Market Hall. I ordered three handrolls at the counter and since I wanted to eat at the bar, I was told I could pick any seat. The total came out to be around $24 before tip and tax, and the meal came with complimentary miso soup. Overall, I thought it was on the pricier side for handrolls, considering the taste and quality. The toro ($9) was just alright and the ikura ($8.2) was not bad. I really liked the scallop with yuzu kosho ($7.5) though, and might come back for that. It was really soft and the yuzu was an excellent finishing touch. Also, the chef will check to make sure that you're done with your handroll before handing you your next one.
google avatar

Peter D.

Yelp
I've never been a big handroll guy. My mom (and only my mom) will tell you I'm a handsome guy. No one will tell you I'm a handy guy. I tried to be a handkerchief guy, but it didn't take. I'm becoming a Handmaid's Tale guy, sort of, and late. But I've never been a big handroll guy (nor a handcuffed guy...never been caught). Because you have to really love the nori to love the handroll, and it's never been my favorite aspect of sushi. That said, having eaten here at Daigo a handful of times, I can honestly say they've changed my mind. The fish is fresh and light, the rice properly seasoned, and the nori is crisp and perfect...I understand why people love the handroll. You have to eat it instantly to get the full effect, and Daigo does it right. I've tasted virtually everything in Dekalb Market Hall, and Daigo has become my favorite spot for a lightning quick, delicious (and relatively healthy) snack. The simple rolls are consistently excellent (snow crab, salmon belly, tuna of all kinds), but the special shrimp rolls (where they break out the blowtorch) have stolen my heart. And I'm so glad they're not only coming back during COVID and reopening October 1st (that's today!), but expanded as well.

Lena A.

Yelp
Daigo is a favorite. No matter who's on the register at the Dekalb location, they're always a little rude. The quality of the food is always great though.
google avatar

Jessica C.

Yelp
Confused as to whether these hand rolls are supposed to be like cylindrical or conical. I got a cone. But the rice was nice and soft, sushi tasted fresh, so win enough. The crab and avocado was yummy and soft. The spicy salmon wasn't too spicy but the fish was fresh. A bit pricier than I'd like. I feel like it's competing with the places that make Inari like YUBU.
google avatar

Stephanie T.

Yelp
Super fresh hand rolls made to order. The fish was fresh and seaweed was also crisp and crunchy and not soggy since it's made to order. It is a bit on the pricey side for one hand roll - depending on type of fish it could range from $7-$9 for one. It's a good snack after walking around DeKalb market.
google avatar

Sandy X.

Yelp
If you want good quality hand rolls, this is the place to come to. I think I've tried pretty much every hand roll at this place and their seafood is always fresh + seaweed is crispy. You can order the regular hand rolls or ask for it cut, which I prefer.
google avatar

Patricia B.

Yelp
Stopped in for a quick bite. The spicy tuna roll was my favorite. I also got the toro roll and the jumbo shrimp which were both good. I got them all as handrolls (uncut). Three rolls was enough to fill me up.
google avatar

Dana T.

Yelp
Located in a cute little food court right outside of Trader Joe's... perfect excuse to grab a quick bite. I picked up a chirashi bowl (almost 35$ holy crap) that was hitting the spot, but not crazy impressive. I wanted to try the handrolls but didn't get a chance. So I'll have to update my review once I'm back in the area again.

Yelp
Two rolls in and I am in heaven!!! Delicious! Don't miss this place!!! Spicy tuna, YES! Snow crab and avo, YES!!! Yellow tail scallion, YES!!!
