Where to Stay and What to Eat in Tokyo's Most Popular Neighborhoods

"Within walking distance of Shibuya Station, this is a fun izakaya where you can enjoy creative Washoku cuisine. The dimly lit restaurant interior has a relaxed feel, and you can experience true Japanese omotenashi hospitality from the kimono-clad proprietress." - The MICHELIN Guide

"The warmly lit counter catches the eye through the glass walls – so Japanese in style, yet Western in mood. Having honed his craft in New York, the chef opened this izakaya to offer Japanese fare in a casual setting. The proprietress greets guests in kimono. Sashimi is served as a mixed platter. Potato salad and steamed shrimp siu mai dumplings are perennial favourites, as is the finisher of takikomi-gohan (rice dish with soy sauce and boiled with various ingredients). Every dish bursts with playful creativity." - Michelin Inspector

Sometimes you get lucky in life. If you’re eating here then you are at a lucky point in life. This was a culinary journey. An explosion of flavor with every dish. This place could thrive in any major city all over the world. If you don’t just come for the food come for the vibe. Low lighting, great soundtrack. Elegant interior… place has it all. I will be dreaming of returning some day.

The food here was particularly underwhelming. We got the 9 courses menu, and it started very well with some tempura and very good sashimi, however we were very disappointed with the wagyu dish. The wagyu was a bit chewy (my wife had to spit out one of the pieces, feeling very ashamed for it, but still), we had better meat (non-wagyu) on random gyukatsu restaurants. The service was very nice and helpful, and feel bad for them to not have a perfect review here, but just keeping it honest 😁 If you still decide to go there, choose the 11 course menu, for what I saw being prepared in front of me, it looked like it was well worth the price difference.

We were expecting a lot from this place but unfortunately it was quiet underwhelming. The food was just ok. No big flavours, not much creativity, no star dish. Even the wagyu let us down. Instead of highlighting the great produce the plate was sort of a Sunday roast with a boiled flovourless mushroom, a strong sauce and an undercooked cube of potato. And yes, the meet was chewy too.. The desert? (ouch!) one of the most flavourless thing I’ve eaten. I wouldn’t say it’s a bad place but doesn’t reflect the hype that it has and I wouldn’t go back. We did like the place, the service and the sake variety but unfortunately the food was just not there.

Overall was an underwhelming experience. Out of the 9 courses, only the first 4 were good in my opinion. It started tasting downhill from the shrimp and seaweed dish. The flavors and textures were all one note and I feel disappointed since it is a michelin guide restaurant. Shrimp and seaweed: one bowl of mush Sea bass: had a little but of rancid tasting sauce Wagyu roast beef: very chewy Dessert: burnt sugar tasted bitter Not even 2 hrs after dinner i began throwing everything up for the next 3 hrs. I havent eaten much all day because i was looking forward to dinner! The staff was very friendly though, ambiance was relaxing and dim. It was nice to get out of the bustling city for a short time.

Issai Kassai is one of our favorite izakayas in Tokyo! The atmosphere is great, and the food and drinks are top-notch. The service is excellent, with superb sake recommendations that really enhance the experience. The chefs prepare fresh, outstanding dishes, and the price-quality ratio is amazing. 200% recommended!

I ate not too long before coming here because I figured it wouldn’t be a lot of food. I was mistaken- come hungry. The food is plentiful and it is super tasty. Small spot with maybe twenty seats. But it’s a nice chill, romantic vibe. Nice to watch the chef’s meticulously make every dish. The staff was all really friendly and nice as well, smiling and talking often. They were able to accommodate for pescatarian which is nice. I definitely recommend.

OCT 2024 Came here for dinner with a reservation and was sat at the counter where you can get a full view of the open kitchen and the chefs at work. I had the eleven course omakase which included a wide variety of dishes such as sashimi, tempura, fried croquette, soup, grilled fish and wagyu, unagi claypot rice and dessert. The staffs and chefs were friendly, explaining each dish as they were being served. Overall the price was reasonable considering the quality and taste of the dishes; the sashimi was fresh, you get a good amount of wagyu from the seared nigiri and the grilled marbled sirloin, the croquette was crispy with a nice creamy crab filling, tilefish was grilled to perfection with the crispy skin, and the unagi with rice was hearty.

Chose the ¥9600 set. I love the first dish bun, the dessert, the final two main dishes (beef cheek and the salmon and roe with rice). The sashimi pieces are so-so fish choices (lean white or red fish) and all in tiny pieces. The chef definitely is a good chef (cooking skill is pretty good)! I will go back for the hot dishes. I was charged for ordering 6 cups of hot water for ¥1800.
