Yelp
I love uni (sea urchin) and had been searching for a Japanese restaurant around Virginia Beach(where I live) for a while, not wanting to spend $10 a piece at Zushi, I found Daikichi where they sell uni too. It was a little longer drive than what I'll usually drive to get food but totally worth it!
We ordered 3 Uni nigiri(of course), 3 Toro (Tuna belly) nigiri, Fried Oyster, spciy miso raman and Una Ju(Unagi rice box). It's a 50/50 for the food because 2 of the dishes are really nice but the other 2 are meh. But based on the atmosphere and service, I'm giving them 4/5 and would come back for the 2 good dishes and try something else.
The good dishes:
The Spicy Miso Ramen: The right amount of heat, noodles are firm and fresh, with a bunch of veggies! If I wasn't filled by the fried oyster(potato) I'd drink the soup too!
Uni(Sea Urchin) nigiri: I had an Em-urchin-cy after not being able to have sea urchin for years, and I had to order 2 even though they're pricier than other sushi! If you haven't had Sea Urchin before, my tip is that it's not everybody's favorite. The taste is kinda like 30x taste of raw oyster, and it is creamy. The sea urchin looks and tasted very fresh and cold, and the amount is generous!
Toro(Tuna belly) sushi: Just like the sea urchin, looks and tasted fresh and good! The fish is thicc and fatty, totally worth the price(4.50 for one).
I must say the chef did a really good job of making the "real" nigiri. Many Japanese restaurant are not owned by Japanese in Hampton Roads and the sushi rice is just different. The chef here did it correctly by making the rice smaller instead of a big chunk of rice to fill you up.
The meh dish:
Sadly I'm not impressed with the Fried Oyster because I can't taste any oyster but potato. The menu says it's oyster covered with potato but there's barely oysters... It actually tasted good but if you're telling me it's fried oyster, I'd expect fried oyster with a thin layer of potato, not potato with tiny little bit of oysters. Or the menu should've said it's Korokke, which the main ingredient is potato with the meat/seafood in the middle.
The Una Ju was ok. The unagi was delicious and fresh, but the rice tasted weird and wet. I'm guessing they used sushi rice for it and I've never had unadon/ju with sushi rice despite me having many authentic Japanese dishes from Hong Kong(where I was from), and it didn't taste good.
Overall there are dishes that they did very well especially sushi, but some dishes are meh. I will definitely come back for the sushi especially for sea urchin, and might try other dishes hopefully they'll earn the other star from me!
