The Worst Parts of Working in a Restaurant | Eater

"At a seasonal Iowa location, hot muggy days would cause the soft-serve machine to overheat and dispense straight liquid ice milk instead of the expected curled soft-serve, creating long lines and frustrated customers with nothing staff could do but wait for the machine to recover. The sickly sweet smell of that watery ice milk now triggers gagging and vivid memories of stressful summer shifts dealing with impatient crowds." - Jaya Saxena

What Mayor Pete Buttigieg Eats on the Campaign Trail | Eater

"A convenient national chain the advance team relied on to boost morale during a long, rainy day — two dozen Blizzards in multiple flavors were procured for staff and press, and the candidate brightened up with a Reese’s Blizzard after a draining event." - Gary He

This was one of the best DQs that I’ve ever visited! Service was over the top and they were so nice to our two dogs and gave them pup cups. Food was quick and hot. Highly recommended!

Google
Some of the best dq food I've had. It would be 5 stars but wow it's hit or miss for service. Sometimes it's fine. A woman who was doing training in July was incredibly rude to us when a trainee made a mistake. Like it was our fault he'd hit the wrong button and we were unreasonable for wanting the correct thing. Other times workers are great. Other times they seem very bored with everything.

Google
This was my first time ever going to a Dairy Queen that had more than just ice cream, and it was a great first impression. Each employee welcomed us as soon as we entered the store, and they all seemed eager to give us the best service possible. The food was much better than I anticipated, and they actually did the thing where they flip the blizzard upside down, which I’ve never seen in real life. We got chicken strips, fries, a burger, cheese curds, a cookie dough blizzard, and a butterfinger blizzard. All fantastic and well priced. The only thing I would change is the store itself. It seemed clean to me, but the toilet in the bathroom was clogged, so we had to go to the Panda Express next door to use the restroom. The store is also extremely quiet. I think some music playing could improve the environment.

Best dairy queen I've ever been to. Service was excellent, food is always fresh & delicious. Manager Nicole is so nice. Wish I could rate more than 5stars.

Google
Must of been new employees or just high school kids. Empty parking lot a few cars in the drive threw so we went in and ordered. It took almost half an hour to get the 7 box meal deal thing. While waiting used the restroom. Filthy. Piss on the seats, my first thought was the men's room must be closed because it looks like the men's room in here. It wasn't. But sure tough to smell. While waiting the half an hour for food I went outside. At one point I looked up the phone number. Called to complain. But when they answered I hung up. Not trying to be a. B but geeze. They could of hooked it up with some ice cream or something for making us wait all night. Pretzel bites are too die for. So good. 🥨

Google
Walked and they said "we're not taking any more orders" are you serious?? There was one person in the lobby and three cars in the drive through and you're open for another hour?! Ridiculously rude service.

Google
Food was brought out fast and the all Dominican crew were very polite and fast it's good to see non white people in Jackson

Google
My buddy ordered a couple blizzards. Not sure what flavor they were supposed to be, but I enjoyed the soft serve cause there wasn't much of an other choice in the cup. Fast forward to today... I figured I'd give their food a try. So, I got a burger and the strip basket. I now know they are kind of all things frozen. I've really tried but I can't get through the 4th grissel strip. I powered through the small burger by dunking it in the queso dip. I thought the grease in the fries tasted like fish.. thats not on the menu.. hotdogs are though.. hotdogs flavored fries are not as appealing as they sound.. Complete mess in the dining room. 100 percent obvious that tables or anything is cleaned between guest.

Yelp
This DQs customer service has been 5/5 every time we've visited; which hasn't been too often. We only go when we have gift cards (sorry, we aren't more regular). As with most other things these days, an outing here is pricey. Back to the customer service - this is impressive to me because the staff working all appear to be under the age of 20. Aside from the price, items from the grill have been made to order and really fresh. (Fresh in the sense that it's not sitting under a heat lamp all day.) On our most recent visit, I was a more than a little irked they didn't put lids on any of our Blizzards. Like, what?? We had to ask for lids. I found this odd. If we had kids in the car this surely would have been a nightmare. For hygiene reasons and passing food out the window - LIDS PLEASE. Knocking off a star for this. Can't speak to the inside of the location, but the drive-thru experience has been way above average. Recommend.

Yelp
Stopped to try the new "cookie crunch!" Yes, it's delicious and just as fun as it looks. Great service/staff!

Robert W.

Yelp
Walked in. Stood there. No one there to take orders. Waited 3 minutes and gave up. Seemed like drive up took priority over walk in.

Jordan D.

Yelp
Um so we pulled up to the drive through at 10:20 as all sources said they were open until 11 and we saw the open sign was still lit up. Upon arriving to the drive through speaker we were told they were closed and I responded oh dang I thought you guys were open until 11, to which they said nope 10 and I just said oh shoot you guys need to get your google page updated on hours. As we drove by the window (no longer in the drive through lane but peeled off) the worker then proceeded to flip us off... There was no aggression towards the worker but we were certainly met with some. Really disappointed and honestly offended. There was simply no need. Would give 0 stars if I could :(

Yelp
Stopped in for a blizzard in a hot fudge sundae at the Coralville DQ. Hours posted on the web show open till 9 PM. Long line at drive-through and the lobby was locked. Attribute this to the fact that there was only one individual manning the counter. The individual working at the counter was very efficient at keeping the line moving although it was a little disappointing not to be able to sit down and enjoy our ice cream at the store. From the outside, the restaurant looked very clean and well-kept, but I expect it to be that way if people are not allowed to come into the lobby! Price and quality are what you would expect from Dairy Queen. Recommend coming here if you just want ice cream but don't plan on stopping inside restaurant!

Yelp
Employee Jordan served us at the drive thru she was really friendly and served us some great blizzards! Highly recommend!

Yelp
The woman who helped me really went out of her way for me in getting the perfect cake put together with the most amazing attitude. She made me feel like this cake being done perfectly was equally as important to her as it was to me; that my sons birthday cake had to be top notch. She handled my business and this locations business. She deserves a raise and and DEFINITELY a promotion. We don't see that type of service as much these days and she really went above and beyond. I wish I got your name but you'll recognize the picture. Your GM was there, he knows who you are.

Kylee E.

Yelp
My chicken strips were raw, and there was no gravy. The service was fast I guess, but the people weren't very attentive. The whole feeling of this store was just crabby.

Yelp
I don't know why nobody can read and comprehend a ticket anymore. I ordered on the GrubHub app. I ordered a SNICKERS BLIZZARD, and I added BUTTERFINGER for an extra charge. Paid extra. I literally got a basically white shake, had NO SNICKERS (even though that was the primary item I ordered), only had butterfinger (which I added on). I'm so tired of getting food missing items too. I ordered a kids meal hot dog also, which comes with milk, didn't get the milk either. Exactly how hard is it to read a ticket that prints out and fullfil an order? And these people want higher min wage? Blows my mind.

Yelp
I used to really like this location, came here on lunch frequently when I worked nearby. My mom and I still occasionally treat ourselves to lunch here, but it's not as nice of an experience as it used to be. The food and ice cream dishes are decent, with reasonable prices. I love the Brownie Hot Treat! The staff is still (mostly) friendly and nice. As a music snob, the wide range of music they play on the store system is awesome. The dining area, however, seems to be getting just a smidge dirtier/worn down each time we come. Dirty tables, straw wrappers on the floor, trash left by fellow (inconsiderate) diners.. but no place is perfect. And this location has stopped selling my favorite/only special thing that I like from their menu - the Swiss Mushroom Burger. We'll still come though, it's tradition and the nice staff is a wonderful incentive!

Yelp
If i could give this Dairy Queen Zero stars I would. The last THREE times I came here they got my order wrong. I went today ONLY because Dane's is closed for the season. I ordered a small pumpkin pie blizzard and they gave me a mountain of ice cream. When i took the lid off of my ice cream right after paying, it spilled all over my car. If it's not one thing with this place, it's another. Never coming back.

Yelp
I know that these people probably aren't paid enough but I did not get the right order for my kids and the person running the window was very unpleasant

Regan F.

Yelp
blizzards were melted and not mixed/blended at all. both times i've visited it's been this way. don't know what the deal is with this location
google avatar

Yelp
Used drive through. Wrong items and sizes, person at the window couldn't even say the names of them and eventually said "the one that's a small and another that's a medium right?' Wrong

Yelp
I usually never go to any Dairy Queen for anything but I've cream but the city paper had coupons that I thought would be nice to use. My boyfriend had one of his own as well. The guy who served us didn't seem all that welcoming but I brushed it off. I've worked in customer service and it can be tiring. My boyfriend handed him his coupon and he went to the back to see if it was valid. He came back but I never heard him say a word. He kept the coupon and rang everything up. I ordered next (separate orders) and he sounded a bit annoyed when he saw I had a coupon. He asked if I wanted the same thing. I said "oh, no. I want to get the 4 piece chicken strip basket" and showed him the coupon, attempting to hand it over so he can take a look. He didn't take it. He put in my order and told me my total. He mumbled something about giving him something??? So I assumed he meant the coupon. He said "no. The card". I gave him my card confused. He kept my boyfriends coupon so why didn't he even look at mine? I go to my boyfriend after and look at the receipt. The guy never took it off that either. The guy who served us was a bit rude and I was very disappointed with my food. I don't know how anyone ever eats there for anything other than ice cream. I wish I went to McDonalds instead. Edit: the coupon doesn't expire for another entire month and it says it can be used at Iowa City or Coralville DQs

Yelp
I usually don't review places after having a bad experience but the staff have been very rude and unprofessional the last several times I have gone here. I suggest going to the Dairy Queen on Riverside or going to the Culver's nearby instead for your ice cream needs.

Samantha S.

Yelp
Out of lemonade (how??). My CHOCOLATE extreme blizzard was vanilla with no chocolate chunks (nasty) (again, how??) waste of my money & time. I should have stayed home.

Schuyler S.

Yelp
terrible wait times, terrible service, and the blizzards are never mixed well and are often made incorrectly. I just ordered a cookie dough blizzard and got a cup full of blended ice cream. not a single piece of cookie dough. ridiculous

Sam S.

Yelp
Does not participate in the 85¢ blizzard even though their ice cream isn't good in the first place. Making college students pay full price is one of the most ridiculous things I have EVER heard of in my life.
google avatar

Richard L.

Yelp
Terrible. I order flounder sandwich. They said it would be 5 minutes. 25 minutes later sandwich arrived, TERRIBLY UNDERCOOKED. It could not be eaten. Terrible. (But ice cream was very good.)
google avatar

Hannah E.

Yelp
Made order wrong twice. Ice cream wasnt filled half way. Fries suck. Not very happy with the order.
google avatar

Kagen G.

Yelp
This dq is ass the workers don't know what's going on.waited 20 minutes for cold food and another 10 for a blizzard they lost that ended up melted. So much for "fast" food
google avatar

Rin B.

Yelp
we could see staff giving each other high fives and messing around while we sat in the car for 15 minutes in front of the window watching our blizzards melt because the staff member put it down by the window then walked away and when we got them the same staff member who made, set down our blizzards, and took our card asked us if we had payed yet. by the time we got our 3 small blizzards it was just ice cream soup. maybe instead of messing around the staff could have addressed the line of cars starting to build behind us and not forgotten about us.

Jakob S.

Yelp
terrible drive through wait, couldnt get my order right over the speaker so just told me to pull up and got my order wrong 3 different times, ice cream was terrible also asked for a triple brownie oreo cupfection and got only brownie in the cup. Will never be coming to this dq again

blue B.

Yelp
The service here was actually horrible enough I felt the need to download Yelp and leave this review. Service was atrocious. Didn't know what was ordered and took nearly 30 minutes at a drive through window. Didn't even believe we had paid for our food and tried making us pay again.

Kim N.

Yelp
They have served good food but they claim they no longer honor their app specials yet they honor coupons. What's the difference? They were having a conversation with 3 staff members which I observed happening and I was told the supervisor would not honor. This has been honored in the past numerous times so I wish they would have consistency with the staff members and training on their registers. They lost sale due to how this was all handled. Does any Iowa City or Cedsr Rapids honor their app and give rewards as offered with DQ app? I'm sure the staff didn't care I left, but word of mouth of experience will be passed on to all my friends, family, and coworkers.

Angelo M.

Yelp
This was by far the WORST Dairy Queen in the country! I sat in the drive thru for 12 minutes for a simple blizzard. When I finally got it, it was all vanilla ice cream with barely any Reese peanut butter cups. My wife went in to ask for another one and was greeted by two rude and unprofessional young women. They both hovered over by the toppings to prevent her from seeing what they were doing. We never received an apology, but was greeted by a "what so there isn't enough topping" response. Halfway through eating the blizzard, it had so much Reese peanut butter cups it was inedible. The management needs to look at their employees closer and provide guidance to protect the DQ name. I will NEVER return to this store and will ensure I tell everyone I know to avoid it.

Maddy H.

Yelp
Honestly I am not one to vocalize my negative experiences because I often sympathize with the employees. I have just had way too may negative experiences at this specific location and this location only. Every time they have been rude to me, verbally annoyed that I am ordering food or ice cream. I go often because I love ice cream and i genuinely cannot recall one pleasant experience where I didn't feel horribly uncomfortable and like I was a burden to them. My experience today though takes the cake for the worst experience. Today, there were only two workers, who happened to be the only nice employees that I spoke with that were actually wearing their mask the proper way. Many employees weren't even pretending to try and wear it correctly. They also were not enforcing the mask rule or the six feet apart rule and that alone made me feel incredibly unsafe during a pandemic. Though that was not even the worst part of my experience. I ordered a medium swirl cone with sprinkles which I get nearly every time and they placed it in the window without even calling it out to me. I of course, did not recognize it as my own since it was not what I had ordered a minute prior. When I went up to finally ask if it was mine and they said yes, I asked if i could have the sprinkles that I had ordered before even touching the cone. One kind male employee was reaching to correct the issue that they messed up on. Which would have been wonderful since at the time, it was not a big deal to me. The big deal to me was the short bitter women who snapped at me in the middle of the restaurant in front of everyone. I imagine she was a manager or a very vocal and rude employee, cannot tell which. She interrupted the employee that was fixing the mistake to scream no at me and that she cannot fix my order because it was rang in wrong and the sprinkles would have cost a whopping sixty cents. I obviously wouldn't have had an issue paying that since I had ordered it in the first place. I was so off-put and shocked that I nearly left in tears because of how rude she was. I was not the person who messed up and I would have been willing to pay but she stuck to yelling at from across the counter and refusing to fix the order that they messed up on despite how polite and nice I had been about the mix up because again, I didn't find it to be a big deal of a mess up because I worked in the service industry and understand that these things happen. She was horribly mean and I was humiliated, embarrassed and I am frankly shocked how she is employee there. This location specifically is so rude that I think this women is teaching them how to be as mean as possibly to those who support dairy queen. I have never had an experience like this at any other location in Iowa or any other state that I have had dairy Queen in. This location is the worst and I hope the short bitter women had a bad day. Thank you for reading this and THANKS A LOT for the public humiliation over 60 cent sprinkles that I ORDERED.

Stephanie E.

Yelp
the ice cream obviously tasted great, but the service was beyond rude. after every item they asked "okay um are you done???" super rudely. they also got one of our orders wrong, which they fixed but very reluctantly and very pissily
