12 Best Pizza Spots in Charleston | Eater Carolinas

"Philadelphia natives Nick and Ben D’Allesandro wanted D’Als to be a casual shop with cold beer and handmade pizza, which is exactly what it has become for the Cannonborough/Elliotborough neighborhood since opening in 2006. Diners can go for a classic meat lovers or head for one of the more unique — and tasty — options like the Beetnick topped with bacon, goat cheese, and golden beets. Best for: Fast, hot, and good local pizza" - Denise K. James

Charleston Pizzeria D’Allesandro’s Provides Lunch for Downtown Grocery Store Employees - Eater Carolinas

"Just a reminder that Saint Philip Street pizza spot D’Allesandro’s might be the best ever in Charleston — the crew delivered dozens of pizzas to area grocery stores to provide some comfort for the essential employees showing up on the frontlines during the COVID-19 pandemic. In the comment section on Facebook, someone suggested delivering to the Veggie Bin as well, to which the pizzeria said they would get to today. This isn’t the first time that D’Allesandro’s has helped out in time of need; just last year the restaurant delivered pizzas to furloughed Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents at Charleston National Airport. The pizzeria is still available for home delivery or takeout as well." - Erin Perkins

Very cool spot with laid back atmosphere and excellent pizza. Service was great and very fair prices. Took the family here on vacation and had an excellent meal. Tried a couple different pizzas and all were very good. They make their sauce every morning and have some really good signature pizzas (most of which you can order 1/2 and 1/2 if you want to try a couple). We got there around 530 and it started getting really busy as we were leaving. Not a ton of seating so would get there a bit early. Highly recommend!

Google
We really enjoyed our visit to D’Allesandro’s. The pizza was fresh and made to order; the salads were fresh and delicious (not the cheap garbage bagged salads a lot of pizza places have. And honestly the pieces were very reasonable for downtown and today’s prices. The interior is an adorable nostalgic vibe and best of the all the staff was so friendly and prompt with the service. We will definitely be back. They even give kids a ball of pizza dough to play with!

Run don’t walk!!! The pizza was amazing, and their service was awesome. It’s also not that expensive when you consider it’s all made from scratch.

Google
So nice!! A little hard to find parking but don’t let that stop you!! Thin crust perfect sauce and toppings are all natural and so tasty!! I love a good genuine pizza! I will be back and I’m from Kansas City!

Stopped in tonight for take out and wish we had taken the time to find in. The staff was really helpful and are the sweetest, kindest people I've met in a while. The interior of the place is really cool, with the pull down pizza racks at the side tables. Food was fantastic and the Drunk Hawaiian pizza is the absolute best ever!

Google
What a gem of a place. We went in with our family including 5 crazy kids. The service was amazing. The chef gave our kids pizza dough to play with and they didn’t care how silly they were. The food is outstanding and the waiter couldn’t have been nicer. Perfect spot for a quick and reasonable lunch.

Google
Honestly, the best pizza ive had in the Carolinas. I just moved down from NJ and lived in CT. Awesome. Out if this world sauce. The Margherita is the way to go. Calzones looked 🔥🔥🔥

Google
Such a pleasant experience! This little pizza shop was the best meal I had while visiting Charleston! They have many pizza options to satisfy your entire crew. They even had a gluten free crust option. Food came out hot and fresh and the service was quick and friendly. It’s small and quaint and the decor is eclectic so much to look at. Check them out you will not regret it!

Yelp
Great pie! We are visiting from out of state but would definitely return if ever we are here again. The pizza was so fresh, crust thin but tasty. Salads were crisp and had all the yummy toppings you'd expect on a Greek. Jalen was a great server and he even gave us 2 housemade cookies!

Yelp
This place gets 5 stars because of our server Faith! She was awesome. She made our experience amazing and made sure we were taken care of.

Yelp
I've had pizza here a couple times and I've really enjoyed it. The crust is just thin enough to where it doesn't feel too lite, and the toppings are fresh and varied. I've always enjoyed a glass of red wine with my pizza which they do have but only one selection. Our server was really nice and accommodating, and while the place is not too small I don't usually see it crowded.

Yelp
Perfect place for a quick take out pizza for a bunch of people -- we were tired from our day or travel and this was near our air b&b, so we wanted to get something to bring to our place. They had so many options to choose from. What's great is we each got 10 inch pizzas that were custom to our own liking. ;) and we had leftovers to snack on at other times. Service was fairly quick and very friendly too.

Yelp
This was a bit on the hippie side of things for Charleston, and I came curious to try one of their several vegan pizza options, with tempeh. I got a fresh pizza ready for takeout. The toppings included not only the tempeh, but spinach and peppadews, which are things I really like. However, with a minimal spread that didn't feel like sauce, and nothing to replace the feeling of cheese, this didn't really come across as a pizza to me. More applicable to the non-vegans, this was an ultra-thin crust which is just not what I like. Spared me some carbs I guess, but not filling and doesn't really have the robust flavor contrast of a browned and raised crust. I applaud them for offering it, but it didn't quite work for me, particularly not at that price for a personal pizza. Adding garlic bread was a good decision, and this was considerably more mouthwatering than the pizza, even moreso with the tomato sauce. So I think I could have a better experience here by ordering a more conventional pizza, but the crust will still probably be too thin for my liking.

Yelp
This restaurant offers an opportunity to have half and half pizza, so we were able try multiple pizza flavors. This place has classic and unique options for pizza including multiple cheese options. The restaurant is a much different vibe than others in the area. Very cool art on the wall and great music. I enjoyed the thing crust pizza and cooked very well without being overcooked. Also enjoyed that the pizzas without sauce were not dry and had flavorful olive oil

Yelp
I will always support a local pizza spot as opposed to a chain and this is my go-to in downtown. I love their version of Hawaiian pizza! I'm also a huge fan of their pizza with golden beets and rosemary- so creative!! Their customer service on the phone is great and they always are on time. If you want affordable pizza but want to stay away from the drunk college spots go here!

Yelp
Yum. This pizza was local, hot when I picked it up, and delicious. My wife likes a pizza with a good amount of sauce on it. This pizza fit the bill. We got the Parm with Meatballs, a bacon and a cheese. The restaurant was cute and quaint from the outside. Nestled in a corner building, it blends in perfectly with the historic neighborhood. It belongs here. I ordered on Doordash with the pickup option. The staff was friendly. The order was ready right in time. Good place to get your Charleston pizza!

Yelp
Just loved it! Could not have had a better experience or meal. My cheese pizza was delicious and the garlic bread 1/2 order was perfect. I appreciated the customer service and delicious meal. Would definitely recommend and order from them again. Thank you for an awesome experience!

Yelp
Finally made my way back to D'Allesandro's! Everything is as delicious as I remember it being two years ago. If you're in downtown Charleston, I strongly recommend you stop by and grab a pie. Came in around 3:30pm and it was dead. Aside from the staff, my brother, dad, grandpa, and I were the only ones in the restaurant. We promptly sat down in a wooden booth that had this awesome fold-out pizza holder and started ordering. We got a large Greek salad, the Chauncinator pizza, and the Buffalo Chicken pizza. The Greek salad came out first, and was massive for ~$9! We were easily able to split this between us four and still had enough leftover to take home. Loved the saltiness of the olives, banana peppers, and artichoke hearts. The Chauncinator pizza was perfection: it had a soft yet crispy crust that was easily foldable and was covered with a generous amount of greasy pepperoni. I think they changed up their crust, because I remember it being a lot thicker in the past. I liked this style better. The Buffalo Chicken was also great. I appreciated how soft the chicken was, as well as how only the chicken had Buffalo sauce on it; I feel like putting Buffalo sauce on the entire pizza overpowers the other flavors. For example, with this pizza, I was able to taste the garlic sauce and the blue cheese crumbles. We left full and satisfied, and will definitely be back in the future. As I said in the beginning of my review, do yourself a favor and stop by D'Allesandro's for amazing pizza, cool vibes, and quick and friendly service!

Yelp
Yum, yum, yum!!! Heard about this place and was excited to try something off the beaten path. Looks like more of a local joint. Friendly staff the moment we walked in. We sat down and had our pizza to stay. They came out fresh to order and delicious! Loved the Margherita !
google avatar

Yelp
Pizza is like sex, even bad pizza is still good. Lucky for D'Allesa dros. Not a lot of toppings and the crust is very saltine cracker like. I have had some amazing thin crust pizza but the drunken Hawaiian and Margherita pizza here lacks any depth. The sauce is good and the mozzarella is good it just needs more of it. In the end it was still pizza so that expectation was met.
google avatar

Susan H.

Yelp
I enjoyed my side Greek salad and The Frenchie pizza. My birthday friend had the Ride Bikes. I enjoyed mine, she said she likes her crust a little more crisp but the flavor was good. The service couldn't have been any better and the locals vibe was exactly what we were searching for.

Yelp
We recently ordered from D'Alessandro's Pizza and had a fantastic experience thanks to Mark and John! Not only was the pizza delicious, but they surprised us with a complimentary chocolate chip cookie that truly made our day. Their friendly service and thoughtful gesture showcased the excellent customer care at D'Alessandro's. I highly recommend this place for great food and an even better experience!

Yelp
If you're downtown and want pizza, D'Al's is your place. They deliver, which is great when you have a group- and much easier than finding parking near the shop. I've only been inside once, but if you do go in, it's bicycle themed which is a lot of fun. The pizza here is solid, with vegan, vegetarian, and meat options. Recently, I tried the Om (vegan), which is an olive oil & garlic base pizza with spinach, balsamic tempeh, and peppadew peppers. I also had a Big Cheesy (vegetarian) slice, which is also olive oil base, with mozzarella, ricotta, provolone, feta, parmesan, garlic, and oregano. I'm a marinara base fan, but this is what the group got, and I was really happy with it. It got me out of my comfort zone of the same old marinara base, filled with veggies pizza I'm used to. It's also neat to see tempeh offered as a pizza topping. Both D'Al's deliveries I've had were on time and the orders were correct. It's a much better choice than the chain pizza shops downtown, that's for sure. Buy local!

Yelp
OMG! Gluten free crust is the best I've ever had!!! Service is always fast and friendly.

Yelp
Do look for a sign or anything. You will drive right by it but this corner restaurant is a throw back to old pizza shops. The food is good too. The Caljoe is different than anything I had before. Part sandwich and part Stromboli. Be sure to tell them to make it well done if you like the thin pizza crisp.

Diane K.

Yelp
"A" for effort. We went because I was looking for pizza and they had good reviews. This seemed like a long-time neighborhood place. I was a little startled to come upon such a run down place, but because of the reviews, we chose to go in anyway. The employees were friendly and attentive. We ordered two medium pizzas and a salad. The salad was good and fresh. I did not like the pizza crust, it was too thin and not crispy. I'm from New York, and still trying to find NY pizza in the South....sadly, this wasn't it.

Alicia J.

Yelp
Ordered 5 pizzas for a family of 9 staying at an Airbnb near restaurant! The pizzas Were delicious!!! The sauce is great! Delivery was fat and the pizzas were hot!!!

Yelp
Love Dal's! My go to pizza spot when I'm downtown! Great variety, good pricing, friendly staff!!

Yelp
Pizza was the last thing I was thinking about ordering during my time in Charleston, but I wanted to go some place chill and that was near the place I was staying. So based on reviews and a recommendation from where I was staying, I decided to try D'Allesandro's Pizza. Vibe: It hit on the unpretentious vibe I was looking for, but what killed the vibe for me was the music. I'm by no means a prude and I actually listen to a wide range of music, but playing indie grunge music (and loudly) isn't the most ideal music to listen to when eating out. Food: My go to order at any pizza joint is a Cheese Pizza as it is the purest form of pizza and truly reflects the quality of the dough, sauce, and cheese. They certainly didn't skimp on the cheese, which I appreciated. The sauce was good, but nothing memorable. And the crust was really disappointing. Service: At first the service was a bit off, but once settled in, attentive. In general the staff was super nice. Was it a horrible evening - no, would I go back again, probably not.

Yelp
love love love d'als. I live right next door and the smells of good food always drag me over for a bite to eat. The service here is always phenomenal as well, huge shoutout to the management
google avatar

Yelp
This is truly a dive pizza joint. The pie was delicious and the staff is amazing. Although it was odd they ran out of pepperoni but the service and quality of the food made up for it. Definitely a nice space. Will definitely return and recommend

Yelp
This place is insanely good. I wish I'd taken a picture of what we ordered. The place is understated but the pizza is NOT. I ordered the In Bianco and my husband ordered the Get Gnarly and we consumed them voraciously. The cheese blend is perfect and the light crispy crust is great. Hats off and when we return to Charleston we will be back!!

Crystal R.

Yelp
Had Greek salad, house salad, and a couple pizzas. Excellent service, food came out fast, and most importantly the pizza was AMAZING! Thin crust, fresh toppings, delicious sauce. Great find!
google avatar

Jim C.

Yelp
Great service and great pizza served hot! We loved the thin, crispy crust. We would definitely go back.

Michael V.

Yelp
Good food fast, with good prices. However, points taken away for friendliness, service, cleanliness and overall space. But if you're just after the food, stop on down.
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious 100% of the time!!! Every pizza I've had from here has been incredible. Pro tip: sign up for their text list to get deals nearly every day :)
google avatar

Debbie W.

Yelp
We went there today ordered a double pepperoni pizza with cheese. It definitely had a lot of pepperoni on it. It was literally a pizza with pepperoni all over it and some red sauce and about 10 small splotches of mozzarella cheese, which look like they use mozzarella cheese balls, so if you like cheese on your pizza, do not order this.

Susan R.

Yelp
Best pizza Downtown! A must try!! Salads are Huge and love their House Dressing, and definitely a cool place!

Dana C.

Yelp
TERRIBLE NIGHT TONIGHT FOR DAL'S! I order TAKEOUT frm hereafter and ALWAYS for my workers. Tonight was special out with my sister... welll had beers while we waited and waited then given the wrong pizza then told it's Friday night... really? Then told a few times it's next... it was NOT.... no eye contact no truth. Guess we need a Dals break!? Won't bothered Dals for the garden club : (

Yelp
This place was awesome.. now that I have your attention this pizza has great crust with a great crisp yet it is not hard so you can fold it. We got the half Meat and half vegies. The flavor of the meats are balanced equal flavor profiles. The location is quaint do not blink you may miss it. Look again you just passed it. You are a local and have not tried it then go, visiting then stop and try it. Not fancy not flashy just a good crust with great toppings.
google avatar

Ella M.

Yelp
Great service, amazing marinara sauce and cute restaurant. Not your authentic pizza per say but for the price it was not bad.

Ashley J.

Yelp
Wonderful food and accommodating to vegans/gluten free people! You just might need to call and order instead of ordering online.
google avatar

Lei S.

Yelp
Great service and pizza. Server came over and chatted with us during the meal. Very friendly and family friendly.
google avatar

Claire H.

Yelp
The inside is pretty small and has very limited seating, however, they gave my group amazing service. The food came out pretty quick too which is another green flag for a restaurant.
google avatar

John P.

Yelp
D'Als has always been a huge supporter of the community. When we ran vaccine clinics in Charleston they donated pizzas for the medical staff. And it's always delicious! The salads are great too!
google avatar

Mark K.

Yelp
Let me jump on the rave pile and shout out loud for the Buffalo Chicken pizza. Great flavor with a slightly flaky crust, real blue cheese and authentic Buffalo chicken chunks (I'm from Buffalo. It's legit). It's missing a slice as I had to authenticate. Bottom line...Go for it!
google avatar

John J.

Yelp
What a neat place to find on the first night. The staff is great and the pizza was amazing. Add ricotta to your pizza, mouth watering.
google avatar

Pete D.

Yelp
Decent tasting pizza and garlic bread and made quickly. Not the best pizza I've ever had but significantly better than the other two pizza places we tried in Charleston.

Abhijit K.

Yelp
Legit pizza. Very dive-y vibe. I could've eaten like 3 pies by myself . Very friendly staff! Will definitely go back!
google avatar

Grace M.

Yelp
This place will forever be my favorite pizza shop! It's divey, it's fun, and it SO good! House salad is always massive and their Greek dressing is sooo good I could eat it everyday. It's my favorite Greek salad in charleston 100%. This pizza is also amazing. The big cheesy is my ride or die. I definitely recommend trying a specialty pizza cus that's what they're known for. But great people and great food!
google avatar

Greg K.

Yelp
Actual delivery and great pizza...and local to boot? No brainer.

Melissa ..

Yelp
So yum! Got a regular and a vegan pizza to go and both were delicious. Great place for people with dietary restrictions. Thank you!

Yelp
Great pizza, service and atmosphere. I especially liked the Il Bianco. The restaurant has a cool bicycle theme with quirky and unique decor! Great way to spend our first evening in Charleston after a day of sightseeing.
google avatar

Mark R.

Yelp
Fantastic pizza and service. Great vibe and value. Lotsa topping selections. The pizza crust was done to near perfection.

Yelp
Dals = no frills top notch pizza. Dals is a staple and perfect placement next to Cutty's to grab a slice and then play a round of pool. The beer and wine prices are quite reasonable. Honestly all the prices are pretty reasonably. Some of the more topped and fancier pizzas equate to about 23 bucks for a large but you are paying for your toppings. A large salad will easily feed 4 people and is just 8-9 bucks for the house or Greek. I haven't been yet but I hear the lunch specials are also top notch. My favorite pizzas are the luau (yes not everybody loves pineapple), chauncinator, and classic Marg. Also great combo that they have at every table is sirachi and honey to mix and dip the crust in. I usually am dining in or picking up so can't speak on delivery experience. Yumm pizza!

Taylor S.

Yelp
Wonderful service and amazing food. Partner and I stopped in at around 9:25 pm, they close at 10pm, employee informed us that the kitchen was closed, we were happily ready to leave but the employee offered us their extra slices for free! He gave us 4-5 slices with no expectation of compensation. The staff here is phenomenal and the pizza was excellent. We received 2 cheese slices, one veggie slice and two specialty slices that I can't remember the toppings for.
google avatar

Christy M.

Yelp
We came here after a baseball game. We were shocked it was empty considering most places were closed. Staff was great. Pizza was tasty with fresh ingredients! My beer wasn't cold at all but I didn't have the heart to say anything. We would definitely come back here. Definitely had the nostalgic neighborhood vibe.
