Neon lights of an odd looking creature devouring a guitar beckon you to come hither and close enough for you to wander bravely, yet cautiously, to the front doors of Dan Electro's Guitar Bar. The odor of stale beer and musty old walls hits you as the unofficial greeter just inside the doors of this original Heights establishment. It's blanketed with black walls that have more black light paintings on them than most nightclubs and has the distinct feel of a dive bar gone retro....except that they're still stuck in 1980 when their decorator died.
Who doesn't love free parking? Probably the owner of a brand new BMW; otherwise, be prepared for a gravel parking lot. There is ample free parking, just ensure not to park in front of the bar next door since they don't take kindly to patrons of Dan Electro's Guitar Bar parking in front of their business. If gravel isn't ideal for your new vehicle, you might be able to find some street parking, but it is very limited. Sorry valet parking lovers, this place just isn't hip enough to have a valet service available.
Depending on the night you choose to take in the sounds of local musicians, you may have to pay a cover charge. Check the website or call the bar to ensure whether or not there will be a cover charge. I personally opt for the evening where there is no cover charge so I don't feel obligated to stay longer than I need or want to. For me, the crowd and music determine whether I want to linger longer for a listen or to carry on to the next bar.
The music and artists are as eclectic as the patrons. Some have the appearance that they're just a shade higher than the panhandlers on the street, while others look like the new yuppies that are taking over the west Heights neighborhood. The place has plenty of sticky surfaces, table tops, and seats to make any germaphobe go crazy. If you get a little too drunk, don't worry because they have a couple of couches to crash on until you sober up. There's no smoking inside, but they do have a very large outdoor back patio for smokers to enjoy while still catching the view of the band du jour.
Drink prices are extremely reasonable with this being a beer and wine establishment. No liquor sales here, so if beer or wine isn't your thing, then have a soda. There's no beer on tap, everything is either bottled or canned, making this an ideal place for koozie users. This is one of Houston's best kept secrets for live music and reasonably priced beer for anyone looking for a decent place to escape for the evening.
