Worse soul food I ever had! The first red flag was they do not take orders over the phone. I should've asked for price confirmation because they were different from online. 10 dollars more, the reason I took a picture and posted it so no one else will be smacked in the face. Everything was horrible, even the cornbread muffins they gave for free. I wouldn't give that food to a homeless person! I spent almost 70 for two, bland, dry, old tasting food! It taste like they're facing Bankruptcy for their shady practices and haven't learned. Customer experience is everything! Customers keep your business alive or it will die! When you try to cut corners with cleaning the place or food you can see, feel and taste it! It smelled like something died in the wall however I gave them the benefit of the doubt 🧐 thinking maybe it was meat they threw out. The reason he gave for not taking orders over the phone was disturbing and can destroy a business quick! You're forced to come to the store to order because others don't pick up their food. I explained that if they had to pay before ending the call why does it matter. He then went on to say they may be using someone else's card which was suspect to me. That doesn't take any money away from your business. It actually adds money but then he stated the cops come to the facility in such cases which was suspect because why would that be a reason unless? Any who, the business appears to be a cover up for something else because the food is clearly not the priority 😔! Frustrating, I should've read the reviews instead of simply asking Google. The food made me sick 🤢

This is a disgrace to soul food. My first visit was February 3025 I bought the turkey wing and dressing meal. The grease on top of the dressing was thick like I was about to pan fry the wing. The dressing was ok. My second visit was 6/16/25: I called first to see if they had dressing because that’s all I wanted and trying to support black business: He claimed “I just cooked a fresh pan”. Cool. I get there he gives from the pan on the bar and says this the last: I’m like I just called and you said a fresh pan was just cooked. He says oh no that must been the other guy: That dressing was nasty with finger size bell peppers.in it. The rest of the food on bar was dried out. His attitude was nasty like the dressing: keep looking if you want good soul food to go: better yet cook your own it most definitely will be better than Dan’s

Food was ok. The macaroni was out of the box, the dressing was ok. The serving size of the food is like giving a kids meal. I wanted to try the yams but they wanted 3 dollars to put it on the plate because it's considered a dessert. No way

I made the mistake of purchasing my Easter Dinner here & I was disgusted! I've been eating here for years & the food & service has been on the decline for quite sometime now, the food has become less then horrible, not only did the food taste old but it's also incredibly overpriced for the portion sizes & the staff is worse than the food, they're rude, unprofessional & bummy, this place has become a bad joke, thank god for Ooo Wee & Bronzeville Soul, my family & I will never patronize this establishment again & I'm gonna encourage my friends to do the same. Congratulations Dans Soulfood, your atrocious food & sub standard service just caused you to lose a long time customer & I can guarantee that anyone who reads this, will not see a reply from the owner, because they obviously don't care anymore. They should just close before they get sued from making somebody sick!!! If you like good food, you should definitey eat somewhere else.

I went to this place because my uncle recommended them. My uncle had fish. My husband thought it smelled so good. I rushed to this place to be let down. The older guy must’ve had a bad day or something. His attitude was ridiculous. He gave very small portions and there was no more fish. I should’ve left when he rudely said “no more fish” I stayed and ordered $61 worth of bland dry food. The greens were not seasoned, the dressing were dry and crumbly, Mac and cheese was the worst I've ever tasted.(definitely Kraft)I asked if he can put gravy on my dressing. Instead he put it in a small container after I asked again. Even a lady came in after me stating very sure that she did NOT want him making her food because of these same reasons.(small portions) Boy was she right. Instead of being concerned of an upset customer- he argued with her- saying you only get what you supposed to get nothing more. Dude you literally gave one ice cream scoop of mashed potato and dressing. You can definitely put some more on the plate for the price you pay. I do not doubt that this place may have been great before - Grandma or Grandpa must be gone now. It always happens once the heart and soul of a family business pass on. You get these people who do not have that’s sense of service. That will be the absolute last time I go here or recommend to anyone that I know. The supply and demand is not far in between. At least have a pleasant attitude and give a healthy portion of food. I can honestly say the sweet potato pie I purchased for $13 was delicious. Other than that. I’m good!

I was debating between pizza and Dans. Decided to go with Dans, remembering the times I used to order and enjoy a good meal. First thing I noticed when my food arrived is that they didn't even include utensils as requested. How am I suppose to eat my food without utensils? Further more I ordered baked chicken with gravy, double side of dressing and yams with cabbage, I received canned greens and macaroni and cheese and zero gravy on my chicken. My dressing was only one serving instead of 2 like I paid for. Its one thing to receive the wrong order and another to not enjoy the food at all. The chicken is dry, dressing is very dry and tasteless, the greens are bland and soggy the Mac and cheese is a hard pass and the muffin was stale and had a nasty taste. The cabbage is fine, the only thing I had no issues with. I'm at a loss for words. This can't be the same Dans I enjoyed once before. I feel ripped off and saddened. Lesson learned, when in doubt, always go with your favorite pizza joint lbs!!

Very disappointed! ordered a vegetarian plate, yams and banana pudding. The portions were small, dressing was dry and no cranberry sauce. They were out of banana pudding so they sent me a bread pudding 🤢. I don't eat bread pudding!!

NEVER AGAIN! This was my 1st and last time ordering from this place. I ordered a smothered chicken and a turkey wing dinner. It was horrible. The dressing, mac and cheese and the gravy were all watery and bland. The chicken and turkey were very dry. I even tried to doctor it up with more seasoning but to no avail. Soul food shouldn't be bland or watery. I normally don't give a review, I just never go back but this was so bad that I immediately threw it outside to the stray animals. Worst $35 ever spent. I should have cooked myself.

Food wasn't good at all turkey wings taste old, dressing taste spoil , yams and greens were out the can....haven't been there in years once I saw how the food looked I should've turned around....Smh!!!

The food has the potential to earn a 5-star rating; I would try it again. I had the corn muffin, which had a good flavor but was too dry for me to finish. The pot roast with dressing was definitely a good choice, but the mac and cheese could have been cheesier and had more sour cream flavor.

A friend brought me a turkey wing dinner with dressing it was delicious. Especially when you're hungering for a good soul food meal. (Add seasoning)

I haven't been to the restaurant in several months so I decided to go today and my experience was Really disappointing. I ordered the turkey wing and sadly it wasn't tender and was pale in color. The string beans and corn were from a can. It's sad this place food quality has gone down in my opinion

The prices are outrageous even before the food market had, double Dan's Bakery was already charging higher prices. I really missed the mom that started there over 20 years ago now the green beans and the greens taste like they just come out of a can. This is not Soul Food.

With all the bad reviews how can you refer this place...Here is mine Went there yesterday for my Mom she wanted a CATFISH dinner not a SWAI dinner... that fish that most are trying to pass off as CATFISH and you charged 16.99 for that mess! She was so mad first of all she's 96 yrs old so she knows her Catfish...The cabbage was bland and the spaghetti was just ok...The cashier is rude as hell and he stated that! I won't be back...Right now Dan's is riding on their reputation from years ago when the older woman was there and the food was good...Dan's is going to be the next Soul Food restaurant that bites the dust it has fell far from grace...BIG TIME!

Hello world! Have you ever walked into a restaurant and it felt just like home? Well, this is definitely the spot! The ambiance, the table settings, the friendliness of the servers and the chefs, feels just like family. Our experience was amazing from beginning to end. We were a party of 15! I enjoyed the catfish; perfectly seasoned, hot and fresh. The collard greens were delish and those candied yams oh, my. Not to mention the hot from the oven corn muffins. PLEASE do not take my word for it, go see for yourself! By the way, they do "take-out" orders!

The food is decent like grandma's, but here's the problem. Ordered 3 entrees only received 2. Called back got someone they said they would try to get it to me, that didn't happen. Asked to be refunded person said fine they will let the manager know. Called again the next day asked for a call back, never got it nor are they picking up the phone. This all started Sunday and now its Thursday. UberEats isn't any help they say I got my order even though items are missing. Not giving my money in support of this black business again and F@%k UberEats also!!!!!

Okay Dan's you're done! I don't know if you're trying to kill us or what. I had baked chicken mashed potatoes green beans (I got greens in my plate and had to go back) and Mac and cheese. Those mashed potatoes had so much salt it was ridiculous I threw them on the ground as you can see from the picture. I didn't want to go back in cause frankly your waitresses have attitude and I don't want any of the smoke. I'm so mad because the first time I ordered from here the food was delicious. I even bragged to others about it but these past couple of visits have been more than disappointing.. I spent $16 and I'm pretty pissed because these canned greens and mashed potatoes was not it. The metiocre chicken was barely passing and let's not discuss this Mac and cheese. But like I said you're done. I'm going to have to find a new soul food restaurant. Patrons enter at your own risk

Food was fresh and hot. Service was friendly and fast. Workers were pleasant and welcoming.

I came hear and upon entering one of the guys was just plain rude. I laughed it off as the other guy was pleasant. He was upset that I came in at 7:40 I guess. I ordered 4 plates and 2 sides of yams which came to about $80. The dude continue to be rude. My family and I used to be frequent customers but the food started to go down hill and we stopped patronizing this place. The food was horrible!! I literally spit it out and went and got McDonald's. I'm not sure what's going on there but the food had no taste whatsoever it also was cold. The only thing that was actually pretty good was the yams which I assume is why you have to pay extra. I came hear just to give them one last try as the other place I frequent is closed on Tuesday, that was my last and final time! I miss the older ladies that were there a couple years back!

Do not order from here. I repeat, do not order from here. I ordered the chicken and waffle dinner which comes with two sides. Not only did they only sent me one side, the mac and cheese, it was cold. I was told that it was the driver's fault that it arrived cold. But everything else was warm. They also forgot to include my carrot cake and when I mentioned that they accused me of lying and said that everything was packed. customer service was horrible and the lady was unprofessional. I would never order from Dans Soul food again. Luckily I got my refund through grubhub. A Friday date night with the hubby ruin. At least grubhub knows how to treat a customer.

You all screwed up all three of my dinners! You either can't read nor write, or just didn't care. I ordered yams for all 3 dinners and you gave 2 green beans and 1 cabbage. If you need to hire new staff, just say that.

The food was decent but it didn't knock me off my feet. I ordered the baked chicken with cabbage and green beans. I was expecting it to me exceptional because my mom loves it. The chicken was a bit dry and the portion size was small. For $15, I expected more chicken. I will give them another chance and try something else on the menu.

Well a tile floor and sanitary contractor I meet on LinkedIn and became friends introduce me to this particular soul food restaurant because he has a good Liaison with the owner nickname "Dolphin". Anyways I ended up eating his short ribs dinner with 3 sides of your traditional Black American soul food. It was delicious . For the money you spent despite me getting it for free as a treat out was worth it. Being Pinoy Filipino American. The ribs the way they were cooked was boiled and soft. It tasted similar as well as had the texture to a Home cooked Filipino dish called "Nelaga". Only it was not garnish with Cabbage, carrots fish sauce called "Patis" and potatoes. It came with so many choices of 3 sides. I ended up getting the base with white rice instead of mashed potatoes and the sides I got was string green beans which was cooked great, traditional collard greens no ham and black eye peas which had a miled but pleasant smoky aftertaste. The owner being a African American/Black owned restaurant liked Pinoy Filipinos and he allowed us to dine in instead of carry-out which my business floor contractor friend wanted to do but he felt trapped. Lol. The owner offered a sweet potato pie which was tasty good too on the house. I did appreciate his hospitality and I plan to come back to try his other signature dish which is a chicken. this is soul food so I'm not surprised and there's so many soul food places in Chicago South side but this one's another good one that's been here for 28 years. He had a lot of interesting not sure if their paintings of African American or black Americans fighting the Civil war and the most interesting was a black African American version of The last supper of Christ. Interesting.

My friends and I are all originally from Chicago just not the Southside. We wanted to eat southern/homestyle food without leaving the area. We googled and decided to try Dan's. It was easy to find right next to a bbq place that smelled delicious...but I digress. We walked in around 130p on a Thursday afternoon the place was empty with the exception of Auntie, Grandma and Little Nephew. We sat ourselves in the bright dining room. The decor was lovely and the tables were dressed and cleaned. My only angst was there was a visible pile of dirty dishes by the door of the kitchen. Auntie came and took our orders. We ordered various things...smothered pork chops..baked chicken...meatloaf...dressing..red beans &rice...macaroni & cheese..greens...and peach cobbler to go. I would have given them 5. My nieces plate came out piping hot so I was super excited! The rest of our plates came and they were plated very well. However, my food was lukewarm at best and I had the Mac & cheese sent back to be reheated (I really should have sent the whole plate.) That was actually a test for me...I feel like you should never reheat and bring back the same dish. I feel that I should have been given a new dish of hot food..but ...again I digress. I heard Auntie fussing at Grandma'nem in the back and said that they forgot to heat the food. I completely understand with the amount of selections they offer the food may be prepared earlier in the day, however, the food should be kept at temp. Don't straddle that food safety. That's not a place to cut costs. The food was good. It's like eating at Mama's house for Thanksgiving. They were really nice and welcoming. I'm glad to have supported them. My bill came to $85 for the 5 of us.

Great soul food, the food is tasty and you get good portions for the price!!! Love the sweet potato pie and peach cobbler!!!!

I ordered on Uber eats and it was popping hot when it arrived. Great portion size and delicious. It wasn't over seasoned. The cake was small for the price but once I took my first bite I realized it was well worth it!!

When I got there no one was there to greet me me there is a bell you have to ring I rung it twice still no one came to help, so I called that's when when a lady came to the front saw me asked was I here to pick up I said no she said hold on and when back to the back another customer same in the lady came back to the front the other customer said I have a pick up. The order was not ready and she made there order before taking mines. Now its my turn to order I ordered the smoothed pork chops dinner over mashed potatoes and my 2 sides were mac n cheese and greens. The pork chops was over cooked and dry the mac n cheese was not baked no flavor no cheese like it was cooked on the stove top, the greens just ugh the tasted like can greens with no seasoning no smoked meat or turkey meat. the whole meal was nasty and not worth $18.75. After eating it my stomach starting hurting and I had to throw up what I did eat.

The guy talks over the food spitting all over your food, gives you little sides, they unprofessional and charge to much dressing ain't real dressing we gotta pay a up charge for yams

Smh.....i really try to support black businesses, I really do, but getting the phone hung up in my face when I call with a valid complaint does not help at all. For the second time, some items I had paid for were not in my bag. So check your bags folks! Don't just trust they put everything in there! This place needs to address customer service skills with their employees.

Food was great will return this week, we ordered the Smoothered Chicken with Dressing Black Eye Peas, Macaroni with Cheese and extra Sweet Potatoes, the Macaroni did not taste homemade it was ok everything else taste great, I also ordered the Veggie Plate which is 3 Sides and 2 Cornbread Muffins I got Spaghetti with Ground Beef in it, Cabbage and Mac and Cheese again everything the delicious, will be returning. The location is great and the restaurant is nice and clean everything is behind glass cafeteria style. I recommend this restauran.

Nice to have such an establishment in the neighborhood for our soul food requirements. Please watch the salt in your dressing and place a bit more attention to refreshing your take out. I would hate to think the food wasn't fresh. I'll keep on coming as long as you keep up the quality of food.

This place has the best dressing I've ever had outside of my kitchen. I am looking forward to going back and trying other food options. I had their smothered pork chops and my daughter had their meatloaf. The portions are huge. Well worth the money spent. The deserts were delicious as well.

Dan's is pretty good. I ordered the catfish, mac & cheese and black eyed peas. The portions are pretty good. The catfish was perfectly seasoned, the mac & cheese was good. The black eyed peas weren't done. If it wasn't for the black eyed peas being undercooked, they would've been a 5!

Ordered meatloaf, mash potatoes with side Lima beans. I love love Lima beans. So was very excited to see this spot serve them. Last time I ordered the Beans, they were a bit salty, figured was a one time fluke and I still ate them. Ordered Lima beans again today and they are extremely salty and unable to eat them. Please cut back on the salt.

The worse soul food I ever had in my life. I ordered door dash, the only good thing was my order was correct and the food was still hot. Other than that the food was trash, and I actually threw it in the garbage. The Mac n cheese was salty and not cheesy at all. The greens tasted and looked like canned greens and lacked seasoning tasted like water. The dressing wow the dressing was the worse part, I'm sorry but I couldn't tell if I was eating dog food or real food. I had never in my life tasted dressing that awful I couldn't even stomach it and it had a weird smell. I ordered peach cobbler I was it was basically soup and lacked any crust and the peaches were huge. The fried chicken and cornbread muffin were decent and fresh that's it. I would never ever go to this place again so disappointed.

The food was disgusting. Everything. I had spaghetti, bbq chicken, mashed potatoes, macaroni, and cornbread. My boyfriend had salmon croquettes, mac n cheese, rice, spaghetti, cornbread, sweet potato pie, and oatmeal raisin cookies. All of it was nasty.

Tried today for the 1st time, meatloaf was tasty, dressing was pretty good, and the sweet potato pie was GREAT! Now the mac and cheese was mushy, the greens were unseasoned and the peach cobbler was just bad, my cobbler was extra juicy, lacked crust and just was not good. I dont think I will be back but give it a try, soul food is different for everyone, you might like it.

Underwhelming. It was a slow time, but I was ignored by the worker behind the ceiling-to-floor plexiglass for quite awhile. Veggie plate comes with 3 sides but yams are $1 extra (wth?). There was some drama among the staff, followed by a prolonged hunt among them for a nickel to give me my change. Food was so-so. I'm too done.

I started ordering from small local restaurants to support, unfortunately I won't be ordering again. I was disappointed with my order. Ordered off Uber eats a T bone steak sandwich that comes with fries and drink, but instead received a pork chop sandwich that's came with NO drink, no bread on fries only. I do not understand how you can confuse pork with beef? And yet a sandwich with no bread? There are other places to order from instead.

It's a pretty good place overall. I ordered chicken & waffles. Chicken was yummy but waffles were soggy. Also they forgot my sides so I was a little sad eating it. Hoping next visit is a lot better!

Great food and portions! We went in and got through the line fast. I love the base side option with your meat along with two regular sides! This was my first time and I will be back!

I was only able to try the cornbread dressing & greens. The dressing was actually made from cornbread & not some reinvented version of stovetop stuffing that a lot of so called soul food restaurants have decided to cut corners by using. The gravy was had bits of turkey when I tasted it I immediately sighed. This is as close to homestyle as you're going to get. I can't wait to stop in again & get a full meal!

Best home cooked food I've ever had from a restaurant. The meatloaf tastes like an actual grandmother made it. The greens are fire. The corn muffins are moist. I will definitely be eating here again - soon.

If you have a hankerin' for greens, smothered chicken, sweet potato pie, banana puddin', fried fish, it is a good stop, They are very friendly and have a dining room you can to eat in. It pays t order ahead and it takes a while when you are waiting.

I forgot to take a pic of my meals. However I did have the smothered chicken with the dressing mac & cheese and greens. I spent $17.28 and ended up throwing it all in the garbage. The chicken is not done thoroughly so it was not safe to eat it looked like a rush job. The mac & cheese where is early and mushy and seriously lacking in cheese. The greens are not well season and I don't mean salty. So the only thing I really ended up eating was the fried catfish fillet. Which I had to wait forever for. Needless to say I will not be visiting this establishments again! What a waste of money! I hope to save you from wasting your money we worked way too hard for us!

This shit nasty. I will never eat here again Pot roast tuff Beef short ribs tuff, meat not seasoned enough, Mac and cheese not all that, corn bread pretty good, string beans good. Spaghetti had no meat mash potatoes soupy. 35.42 gone to waste.

I went to Dan's for dinner on this past Tuesday and I got a vegetable plate that consisted of corn collard greens and macaroni and cheese and cabbage.... and as God said after He finished creating the earth, It Is(was) good!!! The Greens were perfect. The taste, the texture showed that the were cooked by someone who put some love & passion into their craft. It did not take a lot of time for them to finish preparing the food. Quick and tasty. Can't ask 4 much more. I recommend Dans if you want to be satisfied.

In town visiting for a wedding and stopped here for lunch. The Food was well seasoned and the service was great!

Absolutely the worst rib tips I've ever had. That meat has never seen a smoker or grill. It was mostly gristle covered in a cheap store bought bbq sauce. I thought I had found a hidden gem but I was wrong. There was a reason it was empty.

I had meatloaf, Mac and cheese and string beans. They told me sweet potatoes are "not a side" they are sold separately the food was just OK...for the price everything that's a normal side should have been included w the dinner plate choices. The decor is nice the staff is nice there are a lot of options my friend had fried catfish and she said it was just average. I think minor adjustments to the menu would allow for a more favorable rating. Overall I would go back again (if someone else was buying because it was too expensive for what I was getting).

Service here sucks. Been waiting over 20 mins waiting to place an order. The system is horrible. The attitudes are pitiful. Sorry business to dine at. I will not be coming back here at all. The severs keep disappearing. This way you Can't support black business. NEGATIVE and Poor service. Orders my food, they never brought it to me. Then it came out and several people standing over it and talking.

This food was THE worst...small chicken...bland greens...bland mac and cheese..and gritty dressing..I rather stand in line on Ashland for a soul dinner than eat here...I called in and told them about the food...they don't care...just nasty food...and it wasn't always like this

So after circling the block 5 times and almost giving up, we found Dan's. There sign must be missing, but my guess is that they have a serious following and its more word of mouth. I walked in and I don't know where to start. They have smoked turkey wings, baked chicken, smothered chicken, and all types of goodies. I ask the older woman behind the counter were the greens made with meat and she said "baby, i only use turkey in my greens." I am in heaven! Then I asked was her cornbread made with meat and she said no! Cha-ching! Now you non-soul food eaters may be asking what's up with all the questions. A lot of soul food cooks use pork in everything and I don't eat it. As times are changing so are people's "seasoners" and they are opting for turkey which is awesome! My friend and I opted for the smothered chicken with cornbread, greens (made with smoked turkey), and mac n cheese. Now my friend originally wanted the short ribs, but she said she sold the last one right before he arrived. While some may feel jaded by this, I think its pretty awesome that you sell out of food because it says: A) I cook based on need B) Your food will always be fresh Now that means you have to get here a bit earlier to ensure you get your favorites. Now what sucked is that if you do get there closer to closing, they may have to make your dish from super scratch. We had to wait 20+ minutes on our food, which is fine because its fresh, but when everyone who comes after you leaves before you, it can be a bit of downer. What's that mean for you -- don't go there starving. Just right before starving! Food review: The greens were fantastic. The cornbread with homemade cranberry sauce was tastttttty! The mac was okay and the chicken could have been spiced more, but all in all.. a tasty meal at a good price!
