"This airy and spacious restaurant on Southeast Stark features Beijing-style dishes from chef and Chopped contestant Kyo Koo. Sichuan pork wontons filled with ginger and scallions are dressed in a chile vinegar sauce or served in a savory house broth for noodle soup, and Ota tofu is wok-seared with green beans in fermented bean paste, and some interpretations. Chinese-American dishes, like sesame chicken and crispy fried spring rolls, are also available. All are best paired with a Beijing lychee-lime mojito, made with Vinn Baijiu, the Oregon-based take on the national liquor of China." - Thom Hilton

Food was amazing. The pork looked dry and tough at a glance but wait till you try them! Moist, flavorful and comes right off the bone. Noodle was a bit on the salty side for my liking but it complimented everything else pretty well. Order everything, try everything. Very clean and nice restroom.

Super friendly and inviting staff. Small out door seating area, yet perfect on a summer day or evening. Food is Amazing! Stop in for lite lunch or filling dinner. We had the Wings, dumplings and Generals. Great little spot, you won’t regret.

Pretty ok and mostly delicious. Wonton noodles soup and spicy chickens are good. Restaurant’s decorations are great and nice. Restroom is clean but floors are very sticky and dirty. When I step by step. I heard that sticky sound of my shoes. If you like a drink beer All flavors are delicious but if you’re not drinking beers might be salty and spicy. So if you’re over 21 drink beer with this restaurant foods together. My youngest baby loves wonton soup. It’s way hot when they served so becareful your tongue and hands. Also if you want to order food you must line up front desk and paid tip first before you got a food. Kinda awkward.

Google
Solid inner SE counter service Chinese. This is one of my favorite quick and good food places close in- it’s almost always easy to get in and served without much of a wait, and it’s a really easy way to get great versions of tasty dumplings and other favs. Portions are pretty large- I almost always feel like I have some left over when I come here.

The flavors were very new and fun. The wontons were the best dish and super tasty. The sesame ckn was nice, very sticky and a depth of flavor. The Dan Dan noodles were hot but hard to stop eating bc of the sweet and citrus balancing the heat. The corn was like rough tempura corn kernals but became a fun topping for all the dishes. Totally recommend. The fries were a bit too hot but had a nice unique flavor. Maybe it's because I've gotten used to nicer staff in the towns outside of PDX, but this was a familiar nonchalant IDGAF air that made them neither rude nor welcoming. Food was great.

Google
Neat space with industrial vibes well blended with fun character. Order at the counter, but food is brought to you and they bus. Free hot tea and water station are serve yourself. Dumplings and wontons were both great. Fried chicken wings were crispy and had good flavor. Would recommend going in. The food definitely loses something in transit when delivered.

Arrived with my wife just before closing on a Thursday eve. Tried the zajhiang noodles, lamb skewers, pork and tofu burgers. The noodles were soso and didn't noticed much meat in them. It had an authentic Chinese taste with the black bean sauce but the flavor was barely there, fairly bland overall. My wife loved the lamb skewers, I thought they were decent but not great. They did do a good job of hiding the strong lamb taste but the seasonings didn't so much else. I enjoyed the tofu burger, it had a nice sweet sauce and fun tofu texture. Wife wasn't impressed. The opinions switched for the pork burger, she liked it a lot and I was impassive. We liked the burgers enough to get more to go. Service was average, no complaints but nothing extraordinary. 3.5/5

Google
It was Christmas Eve and it felt like the food came out slowly, but then I noticed the horrific amount of Door Dash etc tickets crowding the wheel on the line. Ugh. Service was friendly and the food was great, although I felt the portion size to price was a little steep. Not enough to keep me from coming back tho. I loved the dumplings and the rest of the dishes on the menu look into enticing.

Yelp
Finally made it to Danwei Canting, ordered several items to share amongst our group, and had a spicy and tantalizing meal! We liked it so much, we went back the next week only to find out they closed permanently June 30th. What a bummer. Best wishes to the owners and staff hooing they land somewhere else and continue their magic. The food was legit and so different from the Chinese food found in and around Portland.

Yelp
Chinese dumplings, noodles & street-inspired small plates, plus cocktails, in industrial-chic digs. @danweicanting Craving some seriously tasty Chinese cuisine? Look no further than @danweicanting in PDX! This spot boasts an open kitchen and clean aesthetic. And the food? Simply amazing. The chicken was perfectly crispy and juicy, the noodles creamy and tangy, and the lamb skewers were a standout. Plus, the vibe is energetic and hip, and with reasonable prices, it's the perfect spot for a delicious and affordable night out with friends. Yelp
Pretty good Chinese food! The chicken was juicy and well spiced. Rice portion was smaller than expected. Service is friendly and the inside of the restaurant is hip and trendy.

Yelp
We tried a few chicken dishes, the La zi Ji as well as another I can't quite remember as well as the Sichuan pork wontons. We liked all of them, tho the La Zi Ji was a bit too dry spiced for my taste. We were intrigued by a lot of other items on their menu and were looking forward to coming back only to find they've closed. Bummer, cause I like Chinese restaurants that serve more than just the usual Chinese/American fare and don't seem to find that many. Hope they open back up again.

Yelp
I'm sorry -- no superior complex from a Seattle resident with a Taiwanese soul, but is this how Chinese food is in Portland? I hope not. The string beans were obviously never trimmed (ends sticking out, poking my throat), never deep fried (a very typical method for this dish), never seasoned before stir-frying (a one-step dish with the wok?). So I was eating almost raw green beans with this extremely salty and heavy sauce coated on the outside. I left it on the plate, wondering if it'll get more flavorful if I just let it marinate. They were out of the thick noodles, which is what we came for. But oh well, the dan dan mien was not the worst. Sichuan pork wontons ring a bell, yes? Not expecting Din Tai Fung level, but certainly not frozen wontons straight from any Asian supermarket. They tried with the sauce, I can tell, so it pays off. Just not those wontons, man... Nothing to pick on for the service -- you walk in and order, get a numbered plaque, and they serve it to you. Great attitude, fast process. If you've been here and love their food, no judgments whatsoever, carry on, please do. Just not for my Chinese tastebuds!

Yelp
This is a very late review as I went to Danwei Canting during Portland Dumpling Week with a friend. I think I was expecting a lot for a restaurant that comes off as serving authentic Chinese food... Needless to say, I was a bit disappointed by everything that was served. The dumplings were dough-y, aka the carb-to-protein ratio was completely off. Chinese dumplings tend to be FILLED with the filling, with a very thin dough. It's really a shame because they market themselves as "Beijing Cooking." It's not authentic at all. The ordering system was also a bit confusing and the service was mid. I remember feeling quite awkward when the cashier said "you need to order first and sit down." I would not come back here.

Laura C.

Yelp
This is a great lunch or casual dinner spot in Portland. You pay and order at the counter and the food comes out quickly. The pork wontons and green beans were my favorite dishes. I did not like the Dan Dan noodles... they had a very heavy vinegar flavor that was unexpected based off the description, but my husband liked them so just not my taste preference. Overall, everything tasted very fresh and friendly service! I will come back to try some other dishes from their menu.

Helen W.

Yelp
I am on the hunt for lamb skewer - have not been able to travel to Cali or Seattle for a long time. The lamb skewers here are very disappointing to me. First it's under seasoned , which is ridiculous to day because of the amount of powers you can see on the skewers. But all the basic Chinese bbq flavor - salt, garlic, cumin, are all lacking. It is also over cooked. Tasted like meat was previously frozen and recently thawed so they cooked extra. Not a huge fan of the wonton too. It, too, tasted like it's cooked from frozen. The wonton skin was not thin enough and the filling was a little too dense. I have been here once a few years ago (before pandemic) and I honestly remembered the food benign better. That's unfortunate.

Yelp
At Danwei Canting for pizza week. Decided to come to try the Ma Po Tofu pizza. Since Ma Po Tofu is one of my favorite foods, turning it into pizza sounded so cool. I love the vibe of the place. Service prompt if not friendly. The crust was very good and the tofu nicely browned but the overall take was a bit bland. We did not see seasonings available. I would come back and try the Chinese food next time.

Yelp
I was skeptical about coming here due to the mixed reviews, and alas the mixed reviews were right and I was not impressed. Danwei Canting aspires to be a cool, funky, Chinese eatery with homemade dumplings, noodles, and street food, but it missed the mark. We came during Portland Dumpling Week and they were featuring goat dumplings that seemed promising. We also ordered their HH chicken wings, dan dan noodles, and chili wontons. Of all the dishes, the chili wontons were my favorite, and the goat dumplings were the worst. The filling of the dumplings was actually pretty good, but the dough was extremely thick, hard to chew through, and felt like a wad of dough. There are quite a few good handmade dumpling places around Portland (Bing Mi Dumplings, Master Kong, Chinese Delicacy, XLB), and these were probably one of the worst I've had. In the end, my friend and I just ate the filling. Their other dishes were good, but nothing stood out. A lot of their dishes were a bit heavy on vinegar and salt. It also felt very MSG heavy. I really wanted to like this place, but compared to the other Chinese eateries in Portland, Danwei Canting doesn't quite stack up.

Yelp
My friend and I arrived at 11:30 am to get a leg up on the lunch crowd. It was quite chilly so I sat with my down coat over my legs and made it through. There were only a few other diners and the music was so load we almost had to shout. I asked and they lowered the music enough for conversation. Maybe it's a thing to turn the music up loud in an empty restaurant to make people feel like they are not in an empty restaurant??? We had green beans, rice and wanton soup as well as the fried chicken with chilis. Plenty spicy and a bit over spiced IMO. The coup de grace was the sad wanton soup. You should know that it is served with a small plastic container of hot sauce. Basically, the broth is so bland that the only way to eat the soup is with hot sauce, overriding the flavor. This is a shame, because wonton soup is one of those basic dishes that every restaurant should devote time and expertise to making. The broth should be simmered for a long time with the sense of the most delicious stock you've ever tasted. This wonton soup was absolutely a disaster, which the fact that they serve a Cantonese dish with Szechuan hot sauce should pretty much tell you. Chinese food in Portland is usually a let down and this place was no exception. It felt like it was catering to a main stream view of what a cool Asian restaurant should be like, without attending to the details. It felt like there was no real Chef involved with life experience eating Chinese food. On the other hand, the parking was great. I was able to park right on the street by the restaurant. The prices could've been worse. Neither of us wanted to take home the leftovers, which is pretty much a sign that the restaurant has failed at its job of intriguing the pallet and the diners' sense of adventure.

Amanda N.

Yelp
This place was just okay. The flavoring was there, but the dishes were mostly salty. It's located in a cute area. I love the vibes of the restaurant. You order before sitting and staff was super patient and helpful. I wish I could give it a 4 stars, but salt bae gotta chill. Onto the dishes.. Cucumber salad: 4/5 good portion and refreshing. Lamb skewers (not pictured): 5/5 liked the flavoring and this wasn't too salty Lamb noodles: 3/5 once again salty and flavoring was a bit bland. La Zi Ji chicken: 4/5 I liked this, but my boyfriend said it was just spicy, crispy, and the flavoring was a bit tiring. This was the only dish we brought home because it was a huge portion. Wanted to try this place. It has potential and I'm sure others would enjoy the flavoring. Just not for me.

Jeremiah M.

Yelp
Very average "new school" Chinese restaurant. My friends wanted a quick bite so we ordered a couple of dishes to share family-style. Skewers weren't too bad but maybe a little bit too chewy? Dumplings were okay, string beans were okay, fries were okay. I just was not impressed with this place. As I said, very average food, but you can find a lot of better restaurants in the city.

Marvin S.

Yelp
This is by far the best Chinese restaurant in PDX. I'm a big fan of general tso chicken but lately all of the places I've been to have been too sweet with no spice. The General's Chicken may be my most favorite dish I've had since moving to Portland. The spice was very present and the sweetness complimented very well. It had just the right amount of sauce without being over-sauced. La Zi Ji chicken is a variation of The General's without the sweet sauce. I used their version of soy sauce (thicker, sweeter and less salty) as a dipping sauce and it was delicious. I love Mexican street corn but Danwei Canting's crispy corn May blow it out the water. Everything was made to order and served piping hot and fresh. Even though everything is cooked to order, the wait time was very reasonable. The staff was also very courteous and helpful with recommendations. Can't wait to return.

Rashi T.

Yelp
I really wanted to appreciate them and bump up my review from 4 to 5 because its been a while but alas the experience was more negative then positive. First of they were out of most cocktail drinks early in the day and then the insane wait ..50 + minutes for just appetizers ? We waited and waited and waited and the food never came and surprisingly it wasn't the case with any other table . The service felt weird ,I tried to keep my glass back (as it had a fly fall in) where the dirty dishes were and the server snapped "we bus the tables " . The peanuts were amazing as I remembered them from the last time . Everything else felt alright but we were just too tired if waiting that we were not able to appreciate any of the food .

Christina N.

Yelp
Stopped here with a group on a Friday night and was able to snag a table right away. You order at the counter and they'll bring the food out to your table. The vibe inside is bright and colorful with a fun mural painted on the wall. Customer service was friendly and efficient. I ordered: -Sichuan Pork Wontons ($11) - super filling and could have had these as an entree with a side, the chili vinegar had a nice zing to it. I'd order again! -Dan Dan Mian ($13) - another knock out dish, the peanut sauce with sesame is divine. This dish was also filling as well. I also had some of my friend's crispy corn and I'm definitely getting that next time. I'll be back!

Yelp
We've been to Danwei Canting a few times since they opened and they've always had super flavorful food. We most recently went during Dumpling Week, and waited in line about 30 min. Get in there and it's packed and no open seats and they wouldn't let us order dine in til a seat opened. Luckily a spot cleared and we ordered the dumpling special (lamb), spicy wontons, the bok choy, and the wonton noodle soup. The bok choy came out first and was fantastic. Next were the spicy wontons - again, delicious. The lamb dumplings came next and they were heartier than the wontons, more like potstickers. I didn't love them as the lamb was pretty gamey-tasting (to me). And then the wonton noodle soup... sorry to say, I was very disappointed in this one. The broth had zero flavor. Seriously, it was bland, and I had to add a bunch of soy sauce. The noodles were thick and not my favorite, a bit underdone in my opinion. Hopefully this was just an off day for this soup? I'm still a fan, definitely of the wontons, and I remember loving the fried chicken on an earlier visit.

Thomas P.

Yelp
We went searching for dumplings as part of Dumpling Week here in Portland, and the places participating were either closed or at a distance that wasn't convenient after visiting the Portland Auto Show. Enter this place, Danwei Canting The staff was quick to greet us at the door, very helpful with the menu and ordering, and the service was swift and easy. Light and fresh, our plates all arrived, along with sharing plates, and we dove in. The pork dumplings were FANTASTIC and the dumpling soup had a perfect balance of flavor and spice without being too salty. Cucumber salad and a chicken skewer rounded off the little meal we shared, and I definitely recommend coming here!

Jessica M.

Yelp
This place is "Filling Me Softly"... Regardless if it's dumpling week or not, this place hits the spot. Highly recommend ordering the Pork Jiaozi soaked with delicious chili sauce. I wasn't too wild about the Sichuan Pork Wontons because the other dish was by far my favorite. But they are two different types of flavoring. Ambiance was chill and gave me modern vibes. Totally worth ordering both of these and can be shared!

Jonathan Y.

Yelp
We came on a Monday evening and it was pretty quick to get seated. Overall the service seemed meh. The staff didn't give off a very welcoming vibe and when dropping off drinks or food, they more or less dropped onto the table rather than set it down gently. It came off sloppy. We ordered quite a bit of different dishes but most of them just seemed to slightly miss the mark. To speak to some of the dishes: Pork Wontons: the dough was pretty thick which made an imbalanced bite with the amount of meat inside. The thick starchy dough also didn't really carry the sauce too well. Dan Dan Noodles: it was very limey. Scallion pancake: had no remnant of scallion flavor and minimal bits. It was also very hard and tough. Crispy corn: this was pretty good. When mixed with rice was really sweet with that lingering numbing spice. Fries: also really good but could benefit from some ketchup. Sesame chicken: this was pretty good with an adequate amount of sauce. There was probably decent size pieces for 30% of the dish and the rest were small bits that was more so breading.

Yelp
I visited Danwei Canting on the evening of Sunday, September 18. I'd been there before and liked it just fine but this time was my last time. I ordered the General's chicken and the peanuts in black vinegar. The chicken and rice came and there was a lot of it. It looked delish and I immediately thought "leftovers for tomorrow" but I was also annoyed that the peanuts hadn't arrived while I waited on the entree. I went ahead and started eating the chicken while it was hot. Immediately, I could tell something was off. It had a very odd and very strong flavor that I'm still struggling to describe but it wasn't good. I couldn't figure out if it was too much soy sauce or not enough sugar but there was something way off about the sauce it was drenched in. It left a weird after taste in my mouth that remained in my mouth even after I brushed, flossed, and rinsed once I got home. The peanuts were brought out a few minutes after I'd started eating the chicken. They were also not what I was expecting--spanish peanuts floating in a very cold sauce as if the whole dish had just been pulled from the fridge. It was so odd how cold it was and it made it unappetizing for me. The rice was fine but I found myself eating it just to try to clear out my palette. I'd lost my appetite and didn't eat much more at this point. I looked at everything in confusion and finally gave up and left. I really wish I'd complained to the manager. If you've got a taste for Chinese food, skip this hip joint and try Zien Hong on Sandy. That's what I should've done.

Darcey H.

Yelp
Friendly accessible space with great service. The food was super flavorful, and even though I got sesame chicken, which is battered and fried, it was just the right amount of coding to not feel heavy. I loved the sauce on the wontons. They had a silky wrapper, and the filling was really meaty, if I hadn't been dining solo, I would've also gotten the green beans with tofu. They use Oto tofu which is right across the street so I'm pretty sure that it would be very fresh. Definitely looking forward to coming back and try and more of the menu.

Carlos D.

Yelp
Phenomenal! My kids got the Wonton and Dan Dan Mian. They ate it all! Exceeded my expectations.

Michael W.

Yelp
Date night with my daughter. Saw chef win on Chopped, thought I'd try out. We had a variety: Spring rolls tasty, Cong Yu Bing was a very tasty tease. Crispy chicken wings were fire! Juicy & crispy for sure. General's chicken was unctuous & yummy - but not spicy. Sadly, the Won ton soup was a little disappointing - the noodles were terrific & won tons were good, but the broth just underwhelmed and was kind of flat (and was just warm). The fun surprise was - the black vinegar roast peanuts. What a great treat. Generous portion, what I didn't finish I took home for ramen night! Waitstaff was generally friendly, but not too interactive with the trending (sadly) QR code ordering system. I'll be back; want to try the other entrees and Dan Dan noodles.

Vuka L.

Yelp
Didn't expect much, but still disappointed. Standard snazzy cool decor with some Chinese flair (Moutai bottles, communist style tins, etc). 1. $4 for lamb skewer - a single skewer. 2. Fried chicken wings - tasty, but not enough to redeem the place. 3. La zi ji (spicy chicken) with side of rice : somehow has lots of colorful spices but still no flavor, just salty. 4. Cong yao bing - worst I've had in a restaurant. The premade frozen ones from the asian store are better. These were not flaky, didn't have the onion flavor - texture was like a thick coarse tortilla. 5. Special wheat noodle with lamb - salty soup. noodles were thick, all stuck together. 6. We ordered 3 appetizers and 2 entrees. The entrees were served 20 minutes apart. 7. Sales machine suggested tip 20%-25%-30% - thats a pretty bold ask in a order up front, get your own water & utensils restaurant with knock-off food. TLDR; Overpriced low quality imitations of the real food in a pretty setting. Is it ok to have a Chinese restaurant with no Chinese people in the kitchen or front of house? Doesn't feel right. Cool name though.

Shane W.

Yelp
We tried the Mapo Tofu slice here for pizza week and weren't too impressed. The tofu was nicely cooked but didn't remotely taste like mapo tofu, it was flavorless. The vegetable toppings were tasty though, which actually made the tofu free bites the more enjoyable.

Brandon O.

Yelp
They added salt to everything. Gross; and good riddance.

Delilah S.

Yelp
totally asian inspired. my partner and i were homesick while in portland and tried our best to find anything similar to pine & crane in LA which is this amazinggg taiwanese restaurant with vegan options. i searched up dan dan noodles everywhere, yelp & google, and danwei canting came up. we researched the menu a bit, looked thru photos, and thought why not give it a shot? well, it was very disappointing. i will admit, the best dish was the bok choy! that has to be the tastiest sauce and i really appreciated the texture of the crispy shallots. everything else was lacking depth in flavors. scallion pancakes tasted like black pepper and the sauce was not that great. we order green beans with ota tofu... never again! lol i suppose i am not a fan of the fermented bean paste. dan dan noodles need a lot of improvement. overall, parking is easy to find. there are plenty of seats to choose from. the staff is okay. and i don't think i will be back for more. was it worth the try? not really.

Tom J.

Yelp
Since I'd heard great things about this place and we wanted some delivery, we decided to give Danwei Canting a spin! Wow, so glad we did. The food seemed to be Asian fusion and was totally delicious, we got: Sesame Chicken: This was excellent, very flavorful, a bit crispy and chewy. I couldn't figure out how they got the chicken crispy as it didn't seem to have the flour breading that most places use, but it was good. Pork Wontons: These were the star of the show! They're really more like pork dumplings and had a great complexity of flavors. So extremely great! Cucumber Salad: This was really nice and refreshing, very enjoyable, though I think the cucumber salad I make is actually better. Street Fries: These are fries that are dusted with Asian spices and green onions. They were soooo good. They actually remained crispy through being delivered. I thought they were truly excellent, my hubs said they were good too, he just felt like having fries with Asian food was odd. Another thing I really loved about their food is that although it tends to be on the spicy side, it wasn't too spicy. I'm a spice wimp and was able to eat everything. Their chef made everything a bit spicy but where it still tasted great and had different flavors, it wasn't just spicy for the sake of being hot. I've been trying to start doing photos with my reviews, but I forgot this time because I'm lame like that, but Danwei Canting is definitely not lame! You owe it to yourself to try this place out!

Molli O.

Yelp
This place is worth the hype. Last night was my third time here and they really deserve the 5 stars. I've never had a bad item off the menu! Everything is always so flavorful and delicious. I was grabbing a drink at the bar across the street last night and had no plans for dinner. As I was sitting there looking out the window, I thought, "Oh duh, let's go to Danwei!" So I got on their website and ordered. This was around 7:50pm. Food was ready in about an hour and I walked over to grab it. I ordered: Pork wontons Spicy wings General Tso's chicken Crispy corn Crispy rolls And like I said, it was all delicious. The menu changed since last time I came in so some of these items were new to me. And ya'll... DO NOT SLEEP ON THE CRISPY CORN! Oh my GOSH! It blew my socks off. I have never eaten anything like it and it was perfect in every single way possible. I am still dreaming of it this morning.

William Y.

Yelp
I think 4 stars is right on the money. I'd say it was pretty good, but I'm not looking to go back soon. dan dan mian - good spicy lamb mian - ok the general's chicken - ok to good pork dumplings - real good, my favorite cong you bing (scallion pancake) - also liked this one

Jenni A.

Yelp
We tried Danwei Canting for lunch today because I'd been wanting to go there to try the spicy wontons and dan dan noodles. The ambience inside was pretty basic, decor of an industrial style, and the cashier/server was friendly. The tabletops were made of wood and when we sat down, we found they were really sticky. I assumed they hadn't been cleaned properly for the material and just needed to be re-finished (in other words, they weren't sticky because they were dirty). We ordered dan dan noodles, sesame chicken, chicken wings, potstickers, spicy wontons, crispy corn, and a spicy chicken skewer. The food LOOKED great for the most part (as you can see from my photos), but the flavors were just OK and we did NOT like how oily everything was. The wings and corn were so oily that there was a pool of grease at the bottom of the dish and it coated our mouths as we ate (not appetizing at all). Then, the dan dan noodles had so much vinegar in them that I found the taste and smell very off-putting and couldn't eat more than two bites. Overall, it wasn't great and I probably won't be back to try it again for a while.

Very good restaurant overall. I got the Dandan noodles and Sichuan Wontons. The noodles looked and tasted great; it tasted like fresh noodles with peanut (or some kind of nut) butter with lots of pork and vegetables. The wontons were even better. They might have been the best wontons I've ever had, and I've had a lot of wontons.

Yelp
We tried to get into Danwei during dumpling week, but it was so packed we were not able to try it. On our second attempt we went on a Friday around 5:30pm, and there wasn't a wait and street parking was readily available. We ordered the pork wontons, the scallion pancake, sesame chicken, a beer and the margarita. The pork wonton's sauce were very flavorful, steamed to perfection, and the wontons were stuffed to the max. They were delicious! The scallion pancake wasn't what I expected being pretty thin, and came with a sauce that was a little to much on the vinegar side for my taste, but ended up dipping it in the wonton sauce which was just what I was looking for. I would have preferred them to be a little thicker. The sesame chicken was brought out last, and the portion was very large. I wish they cut it into smaller pieces, and had more sauce as it was a little dry but still decent. There was not too much breading on the chicken which made it feel healthier and not too heavy. It came with white rice, but there was too much and we ended up taking most of the rice and chicken home. However, my favorite thing was the wontons and the margarita. It was well balanced not being too sweet and almost similar to a mango margarita with a spicy rim. For the amount of quality food we received for the price, I think this is a place you should definitely check out, but I will say if I had to do it again, I would switch out the sesame chicken for something else. It was our first time there, but see us going back to check out other items.

Yelp
Found this place because it was on the Portland Dumpling week. We went on a Tuesday and there was a line out the door. It is a counter serve type of establishment, where you order at the front and they bring your food and drinks to you. They wouldn't take our order unless there was a table ready to sit at. They did offer if we wanted to do a takeout order but we wanted to eat in. Though a table open up right when we got to the counter so it was perfect timing. It is casual dining with an industrial vibe. The food was fairly good. It was very flavorful. Everything tasted like sesame oil so if you don't like sesame oil this isn't your place. There are a variety of things to get from the menu. We ended up with the dumpling special, pork wontons, spicy lamb kuan mian, the bok choy, and the general's chicken. I would definitely go back to get their pork wontons again. They had a few specialty drinks on the menu. I got the mango margarita as the lychee mojito was not available. The margarita was delicious though. Overall, a pretty good experience for this kind of dining.

Yelp
LOVE the food, LOVE the vibe, LOVE the service....but HATE the ordering on an app. Especially when it requires you to select a tip before your food even arrives! Sorry, exactly what am I tipping for? C'mon DC team, ditch the automated ordering, and be a real restaurant that allows for human interaction! Your food is worthy.

Yelp
I've been slowly eating my way through Chinese Portland restaurants and Danwei was next on my list. Can't really go wrong with noodles and dumplings for a meal. You can order for pick up or delivery via doordash (don't forget to select tip the staff if ordering via doordash!) | WHAT WE GOT | + Pork Wontons - One of my faves of the order! Nice chili sauce to pair with the dumplings. The wontons were a nice size and had extra sauce to spare. + Pork Jiaozi - I know this was one of their most popular items to order but it was just OK to me. The filling was alright and the sauce could have done with more soy sauce to balance out the vinegar. + La Zi Ji Chicken - Nice numbing to this dish! They are not kidding when they mentioned it was one of their spiciest dishes but it's not uncomfortable to eat. Pair it with a large side of white rice and you got yourself a dinner. Plenty of chilis to go around on this one. + Lamb Kuan Mian - Second favorite dish to the order! The lamb here was tender and could easily be pulled apart with chop sticks. The radishes and cucumbers balanced out the gamey lamb. The only thing I wished for this dish was to have more noodles as the ratio was more meat to noodles in the dish. The thick noodles were cooked well and absorbed the sauces. All in all, the items had nice spice and kick, but nothing really stood out for me to come back just for the item(s).

Yelp
I wrote a review of DC two years ago and really, nothing has changed. The food tastes as amazing as it smells and basically you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. So, the reason for my update is really just a cool little story about my most recent experience with DC. Now, including this current time, I've eaten food from Danwei three times. Because of doing third party delivery, I have delivered their food dozens of times. Since March, with the coronavirus, I have been over at DC quite a bit and have gotten to know by sight and small talk, the three front of house staff that are usually keeping the places running. The cute redhead, and the two guys (one from NY) and the great old school rap they tend to play during the day (please more ATCQ and Eric B. & Rakim, just saying). That is, if anyone from DC reads this... Anyway, I showed up tonight after a shift of third party and of course they assumed I was picking up. Nope, I'm getting some dinner. So I explained to my fellow east coaster that I'd eaten there a few times and loved the food and I then did something that I've never, ever done before at any restaurant. I told him to pick out an entree and a side for me. His choice and make it a surprise. There's nothing on this menu I wouldn't eat. He had never had anyone do this. My meal consisted of Qing Cal, which was sautéed bok choi with garlic and fried onions and the General's Chicken which was wok fried chicken with garlic, scallions, ginger and chili oil. He mentioned that the items were very popular and nothing that I'd had before. As usual, the food was amazing. The bok choi was a good side to go with the chicken. It was mild but with a slight sweetness coming from the fried onions. The chicken itself was very tasty and I had some extra chili oil to add to the meal and to me, it's not really spicy, but it enhances the flavor of everything. Neither item overpowered the other and so his two choices balanced out well. I gotta figure that most of this town has either been here or knows of Danwei Canting. If you haven't been here, then simply, just get here because you won't be disappointed. Also, to my fellow east coaster, thanks for the brew! Support local during this time. PDX has lost a few great restaurants over the past several months, let's keep the good ones around longer. Enjoy.

Yelp
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Danwei! This is an update to my review a few years ago, when I had a poor experience. Danwei has consistently shown their passion for food, and the stunning flavors that this Asian cuisine offers. I have consistently ordered the La Zi Ji Chicken for a spicy experience - and with this meal - you cannot go wrong if you like anything above medium spice levels. However, I recently was not looking for a flood of spice, so I decided to order their new Sesame Chicken meal. The meal came with a nice portion of chicken, rice, and I also added some of the (amazing) Wok Roasted Peanuts. My goodness, is this amazing! The chicken had the best crispiness, and this mixed with the yummy sesame sauce and wok roasted peanuts made for an iconic dinner. I highly recommend ordering the Wok Roasted Peanuts as a side, since there are enough to last a few extra meals afterward so you can keep those flavors going. I love ordering from you, and I appreciate how passionate these folks are! 15/10!

Yelp
Everything we got was good, albeit a tad oilier than expected. My favorite dish here was the dan dan noodles (not pictured), which I would recommend over the wide noodles. Noodles were al dente and bouncy-- very fresh tasting. They're also very generous with portions, and the dishes felt comforting... and heavy. I knocked out shortly after lunch :-) Would I come back? Yes.

Yelp
Service was really off even from the start. When we went up to order one of their staff cut us off to grab something in front of us, no "excuse me", eye contact, or acknowledgement, which was super rude (even my husband thought so). When our food came they would quickly set the plate on our table and storm off (this was done 3 different times). Crappy service is fine if the food is good, but that was not the case. Wonton noodle - so underwhelming, very little flavor. Didn't even have any true vegetables in it just a little bit of chopped chives. They could have just thrown in a couple of bokchoy at least for some variety, that stuff ain't expensive. Pork wontons- same wontons as the wonton noodle but with sauce. I love sauce but the flavor was not good it was just super vinegary... the wontons weren't very good in itself the skin was too thick and the filling just tasted like a boiled ball of meat lacking flavor and texture. Lamb noodle - better than the others... this one I had high hopes for but something was off with the sauce, again too much vinegar that there was no other flavor than that. This dish was the better than the others, it at least had an appropriate meat/noodle/veggie ratio.

Yelp
Yummy Sichuan style food! It's on the pricey side but the portions are decently sized. The best dish was the Sichuan pork wontons!!! Sooo flavorful, I would even go back just for this dish. We also got the general's chicken- big portion but chicken is a little dry. My friend got the La Zi Ji and really liked it and it had some heat. Maui hard seltzer dragon fruit is good :) Overall it was just okay. I would be curious if the green beans or other meat dishes are good!

Yelp
Confession time: the first time I went to Danwei Canting, I wasn't impressed. I went there for Dumpling Week a year or two ago, and I thought the dumplings were overpriced for the portion size, and just okay. I did like that they served Montucky as their cheap beer of choice, but I came away underwhelmed. This year, I was impressed by their Pizza Week offering (pork belly slices, whaaat) and decided to give them another chance. Went back with a friend and ordered up a storm - the la zi ji chicken, wontons, lamb noodles, and bok choy. Everything was delicious, and I was particularly impressed with the chicken - I'm obsessed with Szechuan peppercorns and this had that good good tingling, numbing flavor, plus lots of ginger and scallions with the chili peppers. The portion sizes were decent, not overly generous but just enough to leave us stuffed with a few bites remaining for leftovers. They also have a few fun cocktails, several beers on tap, and a good baijiu selection. For the uninitiated (like myself) baijiu typically clocks in at a hefty 60% abv, so imbibe cautiously. Don't say I didn't warn you! Still thinkin' 'bout that chicken.

Yelp
Highlights: the cocktails are great, we really enjoyed the lychee mojito. We also really enjoyed the general chicken. The cook on all the fried chicken was perfection! Room to improve: Dumpling meat was over cooked and not fatty enough. Cucumber salad was definitely Mediterranean inspired and heavy on the cumin. It's wasn't what I expected and I didn't really like it but that is my personal taste. The chicken wings were a little on the plain side and needed to be salted more. Really sadly, the rice was made with too much water and tasted like it needed to be rinsed a bit.

Yelp
A great example of innovating traditional food to fit the customer base. The dan dan mian is excellent, rich, and there's a backdrop of vinegar (酸 vibes) that really makes the dish pop. As other reviews may mention, the "ma la" (numbing spice) is lackluster for perhaps those who grew up on it, and yet, I found it sufficient. The qing cai, which is stir fried bok choy with their special chongqing sauce, was such a good pair to the dan dan mian with its texture and taste. I also tried the lamb noodles which features cumin lamb and wide wheat noodles, cooked to Al Dente perfection, 很香的味道 (iykyk)

Yelp
Where have you been all my Portland life? This place feels like home but like the home of cool parents. The food is super tasty, it lacks a little spice but we suppose it's because people here are so sensitive to spicy food. The pancake was amazing as were the green beans. I lived in LA for 6 years and in the Bay Area for 3, this restaurant is the only place that reminds me of China town and San Gabriel valley. If you're a CA transfer, this is the type of place we are homesick for. Come try them!

Yelp
Great fast-casual restaurant. We ordered: - Wontons - Dan dan mian - Green beans - Pork roll Portions were generous, and our party of 2 had enough leftovers for another meal. Everything was pretty tasty.

Yelp
F KATE BROWN. COVID DOES NOT SPREAD BC RESTAURANTS ARE OPEN- IT SPREADS BC PEOPLE ARE DUMB. MASK UP & GET VACCINATED! Danwei Cating was a fantastic experience. A few of my friends and I chose this corner restaurant spur of the moment and are so grateful that the sunny weather lead us there. Great streamline ordering to seating and separate grub hub/door dash contactless pick up. Everything about it was very covid conscientious. As far as the food. WOW. My favorite was their pork wontons. I could eat 3 orders of these myself! A dish bursting of layers of savory flavor. We also tried their pork jiaozi, general chicken, tofu noodles, spring rolls, chicken skewers, and crispy chicken wings. I would pass on the tofu noodles and chicken wings next time and try out their green beans and sesame chicken. Overall great experience, friendly staff, and awesome outdoor seating. I can't wait to try it out again! Thanks for the experience and good eats!

Yelp
We were excited to try this and had a happy hour special with their fries. Those were tasty. We also had the spring rolls and they were good. The green beans with tofu were my least favorite, and only partly because of the hairs I found in my food. Yes, not one, but 2 hairs. I am pretty relaxed when it comes to food, things happen, but 2 hairs in a dish that I was not so excited about, um, gross. So, yeah, most likely won't be back.

Yelp
This was my first time and I want to say how delicious the meal was. At first it seemed as though we bought a lot but it had perfect proportions. Particularly, the fries were flavorful. I would eat here again and would like to try other items on the menu... also they do have specials that I'm hoping to taste as well.
