"Dao Tai House replaces shuttered Octo Sushi on Capitol Hill. The new restaurant specializes in Northern Chinese cuisine for lunch and dinner, with options like mapo tofu, salt and pepper chicken wings, Sichuan pepper pork belly, and spicy poached fish stew. There’s also a “premium menu” with pricey dishes like braised sea cucumber, which clocks in at $40 per person. On the sweeter side, there’s milk and fruit teas, and homemade matcha ice cream." - Megan Hill

Authentic and tasty northern Chinese food. My girlfriend is from the area where this food is from and can vouch for it being authentic. The beef soup is delicious (and really spicy if you opt for that version). The sweet & sour friend pork is delicious and the candied yams are amazing (and even better when eaten leftover). Overall highly recommend this place!

How come I didn’t discover it even I danced next door for a year. Since we realized they had the best “锅包肉” in Seattle, we came two days in a row! Other dishes are delicious as well.

Very good Chinese food place here on the hill. We came in late toward the end of the night and were very quickly seated, though the place was not very busy. The staff were very friendly in the greeting and immediately brought us water and the menus. The menu had so many good looking things and all the food at the tables around us looked awesome. We went with the pan fried dumplings, comes with 6, the pork belly clay pot, and the eggplant, potato, and onion. It was all very tasty. The dumplings were fairly standard for a Chinese place, but steamed and fried nicely, the pork belly melted in your mouth, and the sauce on the eggplant dish was very tasty. We are excited to go back and try several other things on the menu we were not able to on this first visit. The price was a little high, but not terrible, you are on the hill. Service was very friendly and attentive. The restaurant itself was also much bigger than I expected with a decent sized dining room and bar. Which is a pleasant surprise for the hill, a place you could comfortably take a decent size group to. looking forward to going back and exploring more of the menu. They are also on caviar and other online ordering services.

Amazing! The food is an absolute delight. The "GBR" specialty is incredible - crispy, savory, slightly sweet and tangy fried pork. The texture is mind-blowing. The candied yams are delightful - they arrive piping hot coated in a thick sugar glaze which hardens when you dip in the provided water, leading to a crunchy candy shell around piping hot yam. The service was friendly and the portions were generous.

UPDATE2 in response to owner: We each took a bite and agreed the dish was devoid of flavor. Maybe ours was somehow missing something? But you didn't give us the benefit of the doubt here. We did order several other dishes, and I have been here before with friends as well. Of all the dishes we ordered, one didn't work for us and you made no attempt to work with us, or believe that maybe something was wrong with the preparation of our plate. UPDATE: Came back with the 'rents and ordered a few more dishes. The string beans again because they were so good, and the special on the board which was ribs with the snow peas imported from Harbin, which are completely different than what you can buy here. We also got a clear soup with tofu and meatballs. All 3 dishes were excellent and flavorful. We ordered another dish - the Sichuan pepper pork belly which we all tried and did not like at all. It had virtually no flavor, even though it looked so good. We asked if they would take the one dish off the bill, which the manager refused to do. That rubbed me the wrong way, especially since they don't come down here that often. I will not be going back or bringing folks here if they're going to be that stingy.

Would return again. Clean, large space. Fast service. Arrived as a group of 2 and got seated immediately around 6:30 weekday evening. Got the candied yams and garlic vegetables (which was only one type of vegetable). Good mix of dishes actually. The candied yams id say you’d want to share with more than 2 cause there’s a decent amount. The two dishes cost ~30 which I think its slightly expensive but you have to consider the location. Both dishes themselves were delicious though so I’d definitely return. I had a bubble tea a previous time... that was a bit over priced in my opinion and I wouldn’t get it again.

VERY authentic northeast Chinese food place! I was very surprised. Generous portion (just as what northeast Chinese food should be). Cute decor, too.

Update: seems like this place is shut down, went there on 2 different Mondays and were closed both time. The food was delicious, lots of pork dishes and traditional Chinese appetizers. We ordered snow pea prawns, chicken fried rice and 2 braised pork belly dishes, all were tasty, though the pork belly meat was a little dry. The best dish for us was the snow pea prawns dish. I referred not trying the Guo bao rou ( sweet and sour fried pork). Will definitely go back and try it out.
