Dark Horse Bringing Coffee and Ice Cream to South Park and Chula Vista - Eater San Diego

"Dark Horse Coffee Roasters will be opening a new 1,500-square-foot cafe that will include a full ice cream bar featuring small batch frozen treats from Mutual Friend. The South Park outpost will also have a freezer stocked with pints to-go and offer vegan doughnuts from its Skinny Donuts line as well as various toasts and liege waffles. This coffee bar will be the largest to-date and will stay open later than most of its other locations." - Candice Woo

Review applies to coffee and ice cream only, separate occasions. Had “The Champ” latte, their cinnamon/honey latte, which was wonderfully balanced and even better than expected. Not sure if they do latte art in drinks that are not to-go or if they even offer sit-down coffees, but the taste and texture of the latte was a strong 9/10. The ice cream is also delicious, albeit nearly the same price as a good gelato shop around here ($8/two scoops is a bit steep for ice cream). All the flavors I’ve had were great. The atmosphere is rather lacking - very limited seating and sort of ramshackle in its decor and layout. Not really on par with the high-quality third wave coffee they’re serving. Service was, while friendly, surprisingly slow for coffee. There was only one person getting one drink in front of me and I still waited nearly 10 mins for the latte. Like many businesses here, the staff assumes zero sense of urgency, even in the face of long lines. If you can catch it with a zero or 1-2 person line and plan to take your items to-go, the drinks are fantastic and the ice creams are excellent as well. Just don’t expect to enjoy a posh, relaxing and modern coffee shop ambiance along with it.

This is a very trendy coffee shop in North Park. My son comes here for coffee at least once a week. So when we came to visit him, he natural brought us here for coffee and breakfast. The varieties of coffees are very good here. People like coffees would definitely love them. I am not much of a coffee drinker but I still like their roasted coffee aroma smell. The pastries are also amazing. There is always a long line here for the pastries and coffees. We ordered a couple of big breakfasts here to dine in. My wife got an egg Benedict and mine was an ABC omelette. We were a bit disappointed in the food. They were not very appetizing. The omelette was over cooked so the eggs and cheeses were a bit hard to chew. I guess we should stick with their coffee and pastries in the future. Parking here is very troublesome. Had to park a few blocks away from the restaurant.

Brand new Dark Horse just opened today! Lovely clean interior aesthetic, delicious coffee as usual, and dank churro donuts. Excited to have another location in South Park! Coming back often

Dark Horse in South Park is finally here! As a bonus they also sell ice cream. Really friendly staff here and their service is quick. Try the Champ (Latte + honey + cinnamon).

We are so happy Dark Horse Coffee Roasters moved into the neighborhood! We especially enjoy the Mutual Friends ice cream. The birthday cake ice cream is incredible and who would have known it’s gluten free. Will continue to make this a frequent stop. They also give a free scoop of ice cream on your birthday :)

I had to stop eating and drinking my coffee to make this review. In an era where we all know how horrible plastic pollution is, I’m surprised by how many coffee shops still use so much plastic. Dark horse is doing it right with these compostable containers, even the cream cheese has its own little container and wooden spoon! I have at least 4 coffee shops that are closer to my house, but I’ll be coming here from now.

Really dig the south park and north park area. Can't say that I really like the coffee though. I'm not saying don't go there but it was not a big deal for me, decide for yourself. Couple of other places you could visit too.
