"The transformation from noodle shop to fried chicken shack is complete in East Dallas. Chef Donny Sirisavath announced in February that he had closed down his nationally-acclaimed Laotian restaurant Khao Noodle Shop and would debut Darkoo’s Chicken Shack in its place. This time, Sirisavath is teaming up with Jimmy Niwa of Niwa Japanese BBQ for this new takeout-friendly comfort-food spot with a menu that spans Laotian and Japanese influences. The 24-hour brined fried chicken is offered in three different styles: Lao Gai, Japanese karaage, and a Hainanese chicken rice — with dipping sauces like spicy ketchup. Playful menu offerings include elotes done up Lao-style, “Darkoo’s eggs” AKA fried yam balls with pandan custard, and sake served in juice boxes. Darkoo’s Chicken Shack is currently open from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays." - Adele Chapin

Many people are probably wondering if this is Khao noodle shop level cuisine. I'd say no after my first time in. That doesn't necessarily mean it's not good, it's just not as influential as the former restaurant was. One of the biggest turn offs for me is the price. I don't think I've ever had a four piece plus rice or fries cost $20 dollars. I was surprised sauce wasn't included either. The whole menu seems cheap but when you start ordering sides and sauces to make it a full meal it adds up fast. In my opinion I think you should merge some of the options. Maybe have some meal deals that are almost like samplers? Nothing crazy but just add a little more variety. The four piece, fries or rice, cucumber or elote and one sauce, for $20. I'm just surprised considering once you actually order a full meal it's around $35. I'd consider coming back in a few months.

I had high hopes and really wanted to give them 5 stars but it just fell short. The chicken didn’t have as much flavor as I expected given how they describe it. The fried shrooms were bland. The cole slaw was not at all what I expected, super mayo heavy and strange in flavor. Overall a disappointment. And really high prices for fried chicken. They charge $1.50 for about a tablespoon or 2 of sauce. And the food needs the sauce because there isn’t enough flavor. We probably won’t go back.

I am so glad this came up when I did a Yelp search for chicken. Lao fried chicken!!! This chicken will make u cluck!!! It’s that freakin good!! I got the spicy 3 piece which consist of two legs a thigh, fried and a side. It wasn’t hot spicy at all. It’s more of a heavier seasoning vs heat. The salty vs sweet balance is wonderful. The seasoned fries are the way to go. I also opted for sticky rice; which is a favorite of mines. The spicy ketchup has a kick and goes hard. I also loved the DJ sauce. Above all I have as amazed by the love I received from those who work here. I felt like family and could feel they put 100% into their food. I will definitely be back for more!

Excellent food! My buddies and I came here recently and tried one of each of the main dishes. Every single one hits! The lao gai is so different from all the other fried chicken places nearby; it's so savory and garlicky. The Khao mun gai is the chef's take on Hainanese chicken and rice, also fantastic. Side dishes were also no joke. The Lao cucumber salad was so good I bought an extra to take home and put in my sandwiches. The "eLAOtes" was a great take on a favorite. And the fried chicken skin....oh my goodness it was tasty! Staff was super friendly and took time to explain the different side dishes to us as well "spicy cucumber vs Lao cucumber" as well as the different beers. I'm very impressed with everything here and can't wait to come back!

I got the vegetarian tenders and was so surprised with how good they were! I would definitely come back. Removed 1 star because the sesame cucumbers tasted like they were made with a pound of salt. They were inedible Small space for indoor dining but a nice couple let us share their table with them.

Everything on the menu is a must try. Fried chicken is easily some of the best I’ve ever had. The darkoo dust makes it just that much better. The fried chicken skins, also magical. Darkoo eggs, need more than 8 in an order. This spot should be on everyone’s list for new restaurants to try.

Flavorful, crispy chicken, great service and plenty of comfortable outdoor seating! The ube mochi dessert was the perfect way to end our meal too.
