"The transformation from noodle shop to fried chicken shack is complete in East Dallas. Chef Donny Sirisavath announced in February that he had closed down his nationally-acclaimed Laotian restaurant Khao Noodle Shop and would debut Darkoo’s Chicken Shack in its place. This time, Sirisavath is teaming up with Jimmy Niwa of Niwa Japanese BBQ for this new takeout-friendly comfort-food spot with a menu that spans Laotian and Japanese influences. The 24-hour brined fried chicken is offered in three different styles: Lao Gai, Japanese karaage, and a Hainanese chicken rice — with dipping sauces like spicy ketchup. Playful menu offerings include elotes done up Lao-style, “Darkoo’s eggs” AKA fried yam balls with pandan custard, and sake served in juice boxes. Darkoo’s Chicken Shack is currently open from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays." - Adele Chapin
