Ooooh I haven't been to Dave Wong's since it was located on Pershing Ave. That was many moons ago. But fast toward to today, and it's good to hear that this iconic restaurant is still operating n Stockton, CA. Over 45 years and still going strong, serving up classic Cantonese dishes in a beautiful elegant setting with top notch customer service.
I have to mention again, the menu is Cantonese. It's not Hunan, Sichuan or any of the other five major Chinese cuisines. With that said, Cantonese food has a delicate, milder taste than the other cuisines since the focus is on fresh, natural ingredients versus heavy on sauces, spices.
We ordered battered fried string beans, fried chicken, pork ribs, egg rolls, chicken salad, ginger beef, Mongolian beef, chicken chow fun, beef chow fun, honey walnut shrimp, hot n sour soup, and wonton soup. My faves were the soups, honey walnut shrimp, and beef chow fun. The hot n sour had the right amount of vinegar giving it a subtle flavorful sour taste. The honey walnut shrimp had a mild sweet flavor with a cream sauce made of condensed milk, the walnuts were candied. Yum. The beef chow fun was classic tasting. The beef was so tender. The food was tasty but being an out of towner, I wouldn't go out of my way do a destination dinner.
Our group of 14 had a room in the back of the restaurant. We made a reservation. The setup is pretty nifty, the room walls are modular on ceiling slider tracks. The wall panels slide about to configure rooms of various sizes and to create a hallway. The main dining room is beautiful, modern design giving off upscale vibes. They have booths, along the side walls, with curtains. So nostalgia old school but done in a modern style. Classic. Ambiance is through the roof. The service and ambiance outshined the food.
Dave Wong is located on March Lane off Interstate 5. They've been at this location since 2002. They have a restaurant and a to-go hot food counter, just like the original location. They are in two different areas of the same building, and have separate entrances not accessible to each other.
