An Eastside Sandwich Legend Returns to Highland Park Today | Eater LA

"Returning from an extended hiatus, I’m glad to see Dave’s Chillin N Grillin has reopened in Highland Park with new digs just off Figueroa Boulevard inside the redone Frank’s Camera building. The pared-back storefront shares space with the new Chops Meat and Fish butcher and sits near the speakeasy-style haircut shop and cocktail bar Blind Barber; the building also holds the soon-to-open Spanish tapas restaurant Otoño. Thankfully the menu is much the same as ever, featuring eclectic sandwiches like the surf-and-turf — a grilled pastrami and tuna salad combo — that’s proven popular over the years, with chips, drinks, and sides also available. Soft opening hours start today at 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., expanding to 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. during the week and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday (closed Sundays)." - Farley Elliott

Sandwich King Dave’s Chillin & Grillin Makes New Home in Highland Park | Eater LA

"I'm happy to report that Eastside sandwich legend Dave’s Chillin’ and Grillin’ is back in action after being shuttered in Eagle Rock last year; they've set up shop in Highland Park inside the former Frank’s Camera building on Figueroa and could reopen as soon as mid-February. The ten-year-old eatery, long a Colorado Boulevard staple under owner Dave Evans, had been pushed out by rising rents and ran occasional setups at local farmers markets before finding this new home. Dave’s will take counter space around back as part of a joint operation with Chops Meat & Fish butcher shop — diners will enter around the corner and order from a counter and deli case dedicated to all things Dave’s while the rest of the room is kitted out with freshly butchered meats and various takeaway dry goods; the updated menu will include a weekly brisket sandwich using meat from Chops and otherwise offer much the same favorites as ever, from the rosemary turkey on down. It's a great comeback story for a beloved local institution." - Farley Elliott

Google
LOVE the new Dave’s location at the Rose Bowl Aquatic center!!! Came for their grand opening and it’s such a nice addition to the center and community. Delicious sandwiches and smoothies, such personable service! :). My favorite was the Rosemary’s Turkey- highly recommend!!!! Wishing the owners Dave and Ghaz all the best at this great location. I know they’ll be great assets to the community!

We had the displeasure of eating here on a recent trip to LA simply due to its proximity to the Gamble House. After finally finding it and ordering sandwiches from the vague menu, we were left to wait, and wait, and wait some more. The excessive delay was caused by what appeared to be the owner berating a young employee for the better part of 20 minutes. Seemingly unhumbled by operating a sandwich shop out of a closet at a local pool, the owner went on a relentless, gyrating and gesticulating scream-fest, leaving our sandwiches half-made on the counter 3 separate times, in a display more akin to the ramblings of a street prophet than managerial coaching. As the mortified guests stood uncomfortably in line, we all learned way too much information about a grievance that seemed centered around the employee arriving a few minutes late, and not showing adequate passion for peddling unremarkable sandwiches. This was uncomfortable, unprofessional, and I certainly wouldn't bring my kids here. I hope the employee quit; the incessantly-mentioned $26-per-hour pay is just not worth that kind of abuse from a lunatic.

Dave was very friendly funny and the food was great! The bread was same day baked! Amazing I will be back.

Google
Update your hours. Incredibly inconsiderate, especially considering that you location is off the beaten path so when the hours are not accurately updated and people take time to try a local spot rather than a chain restaurant. It’s incredibly frustrating to show up to the place being closed.

Google
Outstanding Italian sandwich (sub/hoagie), just like you'd find in Philly or New York - a rare find in L.A. Friendly and helpful staff - great experience. It's a little tricky to find - the entrance is not on Fig, it's in the alley between Fig and the Highland Park metro station. There is metered parking back there.

There are not enough words, for how amazing this business is!! Consistently high-quality food that tastes wonderful every time. Whenever I think of lunch and/or catering, Dave & Ghaz come to the rescue. They are focused on serving fantastic food and providing great service.!!

Google
Great sandwiches and soup!! Do your self a favor and hit this place when you come to exercise around the Rose Bowl. Update: Tried the brisket today-Outstanding!!!! They were willing to substitute brisket for turkey sausage on a breakfast sandwich, so brisket, egg, cheese on grilled bread with bbq sauce on side for dipping. Man!! So good!!

Yelp
Dave's has popped up a few times in a few different locations but to my understanding this location is permanent. No matter the place he always makes a killer sandwich. I've had two different sandwiches so far let's get into it. Food: The grilled cheese is excellent, made with two different cheeses and buttered to perfection, this one is an easy 5/5. The famous tuna melt is phenomenal, not sure what they're putting in it to make it taste so delicious but this has me craving a sandwich weekly 5/5 The wait can be a little long, usually taking around 15-20 mins but no complaints here, good food takes time and the location is pretty new so I assume operations are still revving up. Looking forward to more sandwiches. I'll probably be back tomorrow :D

Yelp
Once a fixture on Colorado Blvd in a small space in Eagle Rock, Dave has moved locations and no longer has regular hours for a sandwich and fruit smoothie stop. Focused on catering and pop-ups, you can find Dave's great food and updated availability on his IG. @daveschillingrillin

Yelp
Rosemary turkey sandwich the best way to describe this sandwich was a work of love. As I pulled apart the finely cut sourdough bread, I was immediately greeted with the sight of generous amounts of cheese that pulled, separated and stretched nearly my entire arms length. In complete and utter awe at the sight. Then the smells hit me. Mayo and mustard mixed with grilled avacado and fresh tomato all coalescenced into one mouth watering scent. This entire experience was before the first bite. Diving into the rosemary turkey the first thing I noticed was the flake of the toasted bread. Perfect hit of natural softness and crunch from the warming process on the grill. Finally, the moment I was waiting for. The enjoyment of the fine cut, plentiful portion of the turkey breast. before I continue , I must add that I usually go for the pastrami. Chillin and grillin does a damn good pastrami sandwich and I have gotten both the surf and turf which is tuna and pastrami as well as the Ruben. I could go on about those as well but it would be a books worth of information. to the moment of walking in the restaurant, it was significantly later in the day, bout half hour before closing. I greet Dave we exchange hellos and he knows his guests so well! He immediately lets me know they are out of pastrami. A hilarious moment, I had not even looked at the menu yet, but that is the level of care and attention to detail he puts into his craft and the people he cares for. Now Back to the sandwich The avacado was warmed, fresh and soft, a great example of perfectly ripe. The cheese wrapped around the whole sandwich and the mustard and mayonnaise served as an accent to add moisture and flavors beyond belief. the vibe of the restaurant. It's a gallery with collections from different artists scattered along the walls of the restaurant. I'm assuming they are local eagle rockers who would not have otherwise gotten a space to showcase the work , here we are again with the uniqueness of chillin and grilling being with the charismatic and loving personality of Dave. The people behind the restaurant are the ones I come back for. Chillin and grilling brings other parts of the community into a singular area. Ask yourself, where else can I grab a bite, cola and smoothie while gallivanting the space and speaking with local artists about sociopolitical topics? Topics that inspire their work and drive creativity. All in all well deserved 5 stars.

Yelp
The sandwiches were tasty - especially the tuna melt! I know they're still working out the kinks at their new location but it took 40 minutes to get our food. 3 sandwiches - all very simple orders. Look, I know sometimes a rush of phone orders comes in at once and it can slow things down, but no one communicated this to us. When I went in after half hour to ask where our sandwiches were, the woman at the counter (I think she might be co-owner?) was curt and defensive, and said she'd told us all it would be 20-25 minutes. (She absolutely didn't tell us that - not to mention, we'd already bypassed that timeline.). She did apologize - but it felt abrasive and insincere. I've worked in sales my whole life and there are these little moments where you can step back and assess a customer's happiness (or lack thereof) and do something about it. Offer an earnest apology with no defensiveness. Say, hey - so sorry for the delay. Can we offer you some chips or a drink on the house while you wait? Good communication and a little sweetness goes a LONG way. Had they been more gracious, we absolutely would have given them another shot - sorry to say, that won't be happening. I'd recommend calling your order in until they have a smoother system going.

Yelp
They have a great hometown vibe and they've been around a while and they got their new location and it's great.

Yelp
No sandwich can compare to a Dave's sandwich. He's got some kind of magic going on. My favorite is the Hot Hippy, and my husband loves Rosemary's Turkey. I'm so happy he has a permanent place again. Since the place just opened, the hours may vary.
