Yelp
Dave's is raved about by anyone that has lived in or in close proximity to Davis Square, which warranted some first-hand investigation as it boasts a sandwich shop, homemade/fresh pasta daily, a wine/craft beer shop, and all things food and specifically Italian-inspired goods.
So, what could go wrong... other than the fact a legendary "Little Italy" resides in the North End of Boston? As we entered, I kept my internal skeptic and judgment quiet as we took in all that Dave's had to offer. It felt like it was basically lifted from the North End and dropped on the edge of Davis Square proper. It was pretty amazing how they have captured the noisy atmosphere in such a quiet stretch of Davis... and you know what? I kinda dig it... :P
The pasta, oils, wine, and beer selections are as good as anywhere you can find in Boston. The pasta itself might even be better than some of the decorated, heavy hitters (including Eataly). The staff is beyond knowledgeable and able to help you sift through the seemingly endless options in their store and point you to the perfect pasta you are looking for to dress up with that special sauce or what you can do to create an entire meal around the purchased pasta and goods.
Now, all that being said... the sandwich/lunch shop is really unbeatable in the area. For the price and quality you get, you will be able to get a fast, well-priced, delicious meal that won't break the bank. Sandwiches, wraps, salads, soups, and sides are all shifted periodically so if you become a regular you'll never worry about getting fatigued because there is always something new on the board or rotating through the shop.
I don't have anything negative to say about Dave's... the only word of caution I have is to be aware of the hours of operation (they AREN'T open late) and since the pasta and fish are both fresh daily - they may be sold out if you get there near their closing time. Minor points for such a labor of love by the owners and staff there, however. If you can't find something to love about Dave's, then I am sad to say we cannot be friends - as it embodies many of the things I love about food, drink, and life :)
