The 19 Best Bagels In New York City, Ranked - New York - The Infatuation

"David’s in Gramercy is around the corner from Ess-a-Bagels—but it’s better than just a back-up plan if the Ess-a line is too long. Their BEC here alone is worth dragging yourself out of bed on a Sunday, and their bagels have the texture of memory foam, if memory foam tasted like malted yeasty goodness. We appreciate their whole wheat options for not being too sweet, and the musky pumpernickel stays soft and springy even after you toast it. Plus, the bagels are huge, which makes them appealing for sandwich orders." - bryan kim, will hartman, willa moore, neha talreja, molly fitzpatrick, sonal shah

David's Bagels - Review - Gramercy - New York - The Infatuation

"When we’re in desperate need of a BEC, it can be hard for us to drag ourselves the extra few feet (or train stop) to get a BEC at a bagel shop rather than our bodega. But if you live by David’s Bagels in Gramercy, a breakfast sandwich on one of their fluffy Tempur-Pedic bagels is worth the extra effort. The pumpernickel has a deep, musky flavor and stays soft and springy even after you toast it, and they have whole wheat options that we appreciate for not being too sweet. Plus, the bagels are huge, which makes them appealing for sandwich orders." - Neha Talreja

I haven’t eaten here since I was in Jr. High. But I’m glad to see they are still open for business. I had a turkey bagel sandwich on an everything bagel. It was delicious and comforting. Service and food were great. Definitely love to support small local businesses like this one.

Google
ABSOLUTELY GO. The bagels are the freshest I’ve had in New York, and the bacon egg and cheese will be the best you’ve had — always add salt, pepper and hot sauce if you like spice. Their muffins are delicious as well. This is my goto bagel spot for a BEC that’s only $7.

Google
Tasty bagels. We stopped by on a Friday morning around 10:30 and had to wait for 10-15 minutes to place our order and then get our food. We ordered four bagels - one everything, one salt, one egg, and one plain - all with the garlic chive cream cheese. We had them toasted. The bagels were great- crunchy on the outside but soft and fluffy on the inside. The crunchy outside did tear up the roof of our mouths a little bit, but it was worth it. The bagels themselves were pretty big in size plus generous spread of cream cheese made them very filling. My wife couldn’t finish hers. The cream cheese was very very garlic forward, like spicy, so if you don’t enjoy garlic or don’t have some gum to chew afterwards maybe steer clear of the garlic chive cream cheese, but personally I liked the flavor. A good bang for buck at just about $20 for the four bagels with cream cheese. I’d come back!

Google
Decent bagels, the flagel makes for a good vehicle for egg sandwiches. The bagels were well seasoned.

Google
Seriously delicious bagels. So soft and fluffy and the perfect amount of cream cheese. The garlic chive cream cheese is intensely garlicky but it’s good. Turkey and cheese sandwich on an onion bagel is also awesome, with honey mustard is the best. My favorite bagels in the city

Google
Get their BEC sandwich! It’s the dream sandwich that drags me out of bed, the best in all of New York. Most of nyc’s famous bagels are too tall, imo, for a decent bite into a sandwich, and a bit too chewy for how big they are, but David’s bagel is perfect: still got the excellent chew of a bagel, but retains a softness that mesh with the fluffy eggs and cheese, and a bagel sandwich at David’s is the perfect portion for one person, unlike some common nyc monstrous constructions that tire you out half way through the sandwich. Would add a photo but I just inhaled my sandwich

Mia

Google
Delicious, perfect bagels. Crisp on the outside, warm and slightly elastic on the inside. And always fresh! It's a no-frills place, but a true gem.

Google
Solid bagels. Good neighborhood family establishment vibes. Good prices. Love the egg bagel with jalapeno cream cheese
google avatar

David V.

Yelp
Solid bagel, nice crispy and taste to the dough. Got a whole wheat everything with scallion cream cheese and some OJ, for just $8. Good find!
google avatar

Rumi F.

Yelp
David's Bagels serves some solid bagels- in an area densely populated by rival bagel shops, it holds it down with a good balance of flavor and price. They also use regular bacon for their BEC bagels (not a big fan of turkey bacon so this is a huge plus.) Bagels are nice and soft- for the everything bagel, they season the whole thing (unlike other places where they only season the top.) Great place where you can pop in and out

Yelp
Basic spot. $4.60 for a small-ish bagel. Good value. The olive cream cheese was terrific. Didn't wow me. There was a line, surprisingly.
google avatar

Terri S.

Yelp
Just enough crisp to crunch a tiny bit when you bite into a good dense bagel. I opted for plain, untoasted with their salmon spread. The spread has a good ratio of salmon and they smear just the right amount, not too skimpy, not so much that you end up scrapping some off. Grabbed it togo, cheaper and tastier than some of their more popular neighboring bagel shops. The tables and floors could use a good cleaning, then they'd earn 5 stars. I'll go back anyway, since the bagels are solid.

Yelp
0.5/1 Ambience; 3/3 Food; 0.5/1 Value David's Bagels very much gives a mom and pop-shop vibe where the food is first and foremost. There is limited seating, and most customers took their food to go. While the we were not expecting a lot in terms of decor, the seating area was not very clean with scattered crumbs and food stains. The counter service was fast despite a rather busy morning with many patrons and delivery orders. I had a pumpernickel bagel with cream cheese and lox that came to $11.50 + tax. The bagel was delicious with a crisp exterior, but a fluffy and chewy interior. While the lox was fresh and this was overall a tasty meal, I can't justify the price versus the amount of lox. The smear of cream cheese, on the other hand, was generous and perfect relative to the bagel. Despite the few setbacks, David's is a perfect example of why NYC is famous for its bagels!

Yelp
Arrived at 11 am on a Saturday to a long line and an average bagel. The line moved fairly quickly to order my everything with cream cheese. The slow down was the cashier who was also making the coffee at the same time. Place is a little small with very few places to sit. Overall a place you can have a conversation if you were able to sit down. As far as the hand rolled everything bagel, seasonings only on 1 side with poppy and sesame prevailing. No salt or anything else. see my bagel reviews on IG @bagelmavennyc

Yelp
Stopped here while in NYC, and was not disappointed. The shop is small and quaint with limited seating. Ordering was quick and our food was ready by the time we walked down to pay. Coffee was okay, not the best. Cashier was a bit short but as to be expected in NYC. The bagel was crisp on the outside, tons of cream cheese on the inside, and the dough was pillowy. Amazing.

Yelp
Had to get a bagel while traversing the villages by myself on a Tuesday morning and stopped into David's because I heard that it was one of the best. It was certainly a little chaotic inside. As soon as I stepped in it felt like they were trying to rush me out! Ma'am I live in LA I will take my time looking at every bagel and cream cheese combination possible, TYVM. I went for the classic everything with cream cheese and it only took a moment to make. The bagel was toasted, maybe not enough for me, but still fluffy. Really good and a whole lot of cream cheese. I almost couldn't finish the whole thing. It was nice, maybe not the best bagel I've EVER had, but still very good nonetheless.
google avatar

Tamalika M.

Yelp
I got an everything bagel with egg and cheese to go. The service was quick and the cashier was pleasant. The bagel itself was pretty tasty, the egg was fluffy and it had ample cheese. My only complaint is that the top was a bit too toasted for my liking... the seeds on the top of the bagel tasted a little burnt. But I would go again for the price point and the overall quality of food. The shop itself is a little small and does not have much seating. Their selection and variety of bagels and cream cheese is also not as vast as other bagel shops but their price is definitely the most reasonable in the neighborhood imo.

Yelp
I've been going to David's for 2 years now. Hands down the best New York bagel- Quick service, great food, convenient location. I love David's
google avatar

Brooke K.

Yelp
I ordered a bacon egg and cheese everything bagel with extra bacon, ketchup, salt and pepper and it was delicious. The bagel was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside and the egg and bacon were both cooked perfectly. Really good
google avatar

Robert L.

Yelp
Outstanding! Crispy on the outside, soft in the middle. Very generous portions of spread all at a reasonable price. I'd definitely recommend David's!

Grace M.

Yelp
Best bagel place in nyc.. fastest service never a bad line and best deal. Truly nyc gem. I'm a bagel snob and this is my favorite by far

Beth R.

Yelp
Excellent bagels and friendly efficient service. I always get the nova smoked salmon with chive cream cheese on a sesame flat bagel.

Cheryl G.

Yelp
Best bagels and service is on point. Small place always clean. David Bagels never disappoint.
google avatar

Maria Regina Alexis L.

Yelp
No frills Bagels. Love my go to bagel with cream cheese. Best paired with hot coffee and the occasional Thai tea. Simple, filling and possibly the best tasting bagel in the area. Don't expect 5 star treatment but expect 5 star bagels-- that's for sure.
google avatar

Sandra L.

Yelp
One of the best bagels I've had in NY. Super fluffy and soft. The egg was cooked perfectly as well. Way better than a lot of the popular spots like Ess a bagel.
google avatar

Jonathan S.

Yelp
Quick Service. Small Shop. Seats To Eat. Quality Bagel. Not Expensive. I Would Stop By Again.

Emily K.

Yelp
Great quality and lots of options! Bagels were fresh and yummy. Cream cheese was also wonderful!
google avatar

Ashley A.

Yelp
Bagel was delightful and the line was very short on a Saturday morning. Usually have to wait much longer for worse bagels at other places in the city.
google avatar

Mayra G.

Yelp
Egg, Cheese & Sausage everything bagel (+toasted) was worth the $7.00 Delivery was super quick & made it safely. The only thing is, the bagel wasn't toasted all around. But I'd try this place again when I'm in the area once again.
google avatar

Mona I.

Yelp
David's Bagels is as good as it gets. Their bagels and cream cheese are all fluffy, fresh, and delicious. Their Thai ice tea always hits the spot as well. Price points are reasonable at this restaurant and the staff is always very nice. This has happily become our go to bagel shop and here in the city, that's writing a lot.

Yelp
I went here in the early morning as I happened to be a bit further up on 3rd on the way to work. There was two people working there with one person ordering and after waiting for the other person to finish as the other person there was paying no attention, then there was a bit of silence and eventually the other person asked what I wanted. I got a cinnamon raisin bagel with cream cheese and tomato because whynot. The bagel was nicely chewy and there was a good schmear of cream cheese but there were definitely a couple hard burnt sections. There wasn't many raisins nor much cinnamon and overall it was a slightly more flavorful plain bagel. It's a step up from the generic bagels you find from carts but at least a lot of those guys are friendly also and the bagels are a buck cheaper. It's a local place that's been around for a long time but there's definitely a lot of better places for bagels and breakfast. I'd probably give it a 1 but at least it was a good amount cheaper than some of the other bagel places.

Uzair A.

Yelp
Highly recommend this cute bagel place! Had the everything bagel here with tuna (a first for me) and it was delicious! So delicious. Crispy and toasted and so filling. They have a bit of seating, a $5 minimum for credit card, and from the steady stream of visitors on a Sunday morning, clearly high amount of popularity.
google avatar

John A.

Yelp
Top quality and reliable internet ordering. Bringing some on holiday visits has always been a huge hit for me.
google avatar

Jasmine S.

Yelp
Have you ever had a Flagel ? David's Bagels offer flat bagels to order. It started somewheres in New York City in the 90s. Someone decided to flatten the bagel before it was boiled and place in the oven. To us the flagel is much more chewy in the inside then the regular bagel and more crispy on the outside too!

Mary S.

Yelp
This has been my go to bagel store for years however in the past year it has gone down hill with many incorrect orders . Today I ordered a dozen bagels and some cream cheese . The lox spread was sour and the bagels were not what I ordered despite specifying on the order what I wanted . Whomever answered the phone did not understand English enough to assist me so I just gave up . It is sad that they have gone down hill but sadder that after 25 years in the neighborhood they still can not speak English enough to take care of customers

Yelp
I've been going to davids bagels store for 18 months regularly and they have AMAZING Bagels, but a few months back got closed down bc they were not clean!!! I've gone multiple times since bc its one of the better bagels in the city, but have always been skeptical. At this point I realize I've had enough with this establishment. The short thin Asian woman who handles the cash register and answers the phone for takeout orders is incredibly rude. It's actually surprising how often she shouts on the phone to customers. Regularly yells on the phone EVERY time, hangs up on customers in the middle of ordering, and often makes errors on the order. Shes done it to a half a dozen of my co workers, along with myself. I've spoken to the manager about it and he claimed he would speak to her. Her attitude was better for about a month. This morning she hung up the phone twice on me before I was done ordering. I called back every time to tell her my order and when I arrive her response is "I didn't know if you wanted it still". Keep in mind, I walk in and there is not one customer in the establishment. I guess David's bagels doesn't need there regular customers anymore. ‍ After ordering multiple times a week for my co workers and I AND every weekend, I'm on the search for a new place. anyone who has recommendations in the area please share!
google avatar

Bonnie G.

Yelp
David, you totally floored me. I had no idea what to expect, and what I got was an unbelievably fresh sesame bagel with rich scallion cream cheese. I'd come back here tomorrow. Goodbye Murray's and Tompkins. I've got a new man, and his name is David. 5 stars!!!!!!!!
google avatar

Joe P.

Yelp
Ordered ham, egg and cheese on a roll and a small coffee. I got a sandwich with melting cheese, very thin one slice of ham and one piece small scrambled egg for $9.50. This is not what I expect for a place with good reviews and photos. Never again!
google avatar

Steve K.

Yelp
Huge bagels, not chewy. Edible but as far as bagels go - go to Ess or further south down 1st, Black Seed, in the hood.
google avatar

Ian O.

Yelp
This used to be my go-to bagel shop. I'd go 3-4 times a week. Today I was waiting to order and saw half of a bagel fall on the ground. It was there for probably 30 seconds before the employee (I think the owner) saw it, picked it up, and proceeded to put cream cheese on it and serve it to a customer. I regret not calling it out in the moment, but I was just in shock when it happened. This is disgusting and a health code violation. There is no excuse for this kind of disregard for health standards. A customer should NEVER be served food that fell on the ground. I will be taking my business elsewhere.

Yelp
Four stars for a pretty solid breakfast bagel experience! When in NYC, bagels are a must. I relied on Yelp to help me find the place that was going to be good, but also reasonably close to where we were... David's it is! I went with a whole wheat bagel with lox, lite cream cheese (as in fat, but definitely not in serving size), and avocado for $1 extra. My better half got a class bacon, egg and cheese sandwich on an everything bagel. Both came out to around $18. I was very impressed by the lox! They gave me a decent portion and although I'm not crazy about a ton of cream cheese, it was good too. My fiancé really enjoyed his sandwich. The bagels themselves tasted fresh and the perfect amount of chewy. The place itself is pretty classic and no frills. Order in line, get your sandwich, pay, and be merrily on your way. I would definitely swing by David's if I'm in the area. I'm by no means a bagel connoisseur, but these sammies certainly hit the spot when we needed them the most!

Joseph P.

Yelp
Smells like bacon!! Small mouse, running around!! The workers smell as if they didn't shower... Bagel boss is a lot cleaner . China little "girl" short change people. Look out.!! I would not recommend this establishment...
google avatar

Rosemary V.

Yelp
The bagel was good but nothing out of this world. The staff was kind of rude and indifferent. I was the only one waiting to order. The staff was having a conversation for a while before even acknowledging me, even though I saw them looking at me. Someone said you don't come here for service and they were right. Final Verdict: Probably not returning.
google avatar

Sharon S.

Yelp
I used to work at Beth Israel Hospital and always had bagels here. They were always hot, chewy and just perfect! It's been so long since I had a good NYC bagel Bc of Covid. Decided to come here on my way home from Flushing. It's just as I remember it! Oh how I missed you David's Bagels!! Best bagels in New York. City! Believe me, I've tried other places including the famous ones....and nothing beats David's. I'll be back!
google avatar

Jerry H.

Yelp
Bagels are comparable for its neighbors Ess-a-bagel and Tal bagel, although I think I like those alternatives just a tad bit more. Sandwiches with cream cheese are about the same price as the other two places, but the egg+cheese sandwiches (which also come doused in butter) is quite cheap and a good deal if you're looking for something on the savory side. Still on the higher tier of bagels I've tried in NYC.
google avatar

Jordana R.

Yelp
For a long time this was my favorite downtown bagel spot. You're not going to get the millions of sandwich options like you might at other neighborhood spots, but if you're looking to grab a cheap fresh bagel sandwhich, David's is your place. Their bagels are fresh and really fluffy. It's a little jarring at first to bite into such and airy fluffy bagel, but the outside is still hard enough to make it work. Lightly toast your bagel to reach a really good textural balance. Their cream cheeses are a little thick for my tastes, but they have a ton of flavors. Additionally, they really pack a ton of food onto a bagel sandwich. Whichever you choose, you can't go wrong. While the line may look long on a weekend morning it moves quick. There isn't a whole lot of seating, but it's an easy walk to Union or Tompkins Square if it's nice out
google avatar

Denise G.

Yelp
Best bagels in the area!! Tuna salad is good. Prices are fair. Avoid lunch time on school days.
google avatar

Jon W.

Yelp
This has got to be one of the better bagels places on the lower east side and is my go to sport on weekends. If you come here during rush hour though there can be 20+ minute waits but I personally think it is worth it. It offers all your typical bagels and and whole wheat everything bagels my favorite. I usually get egg and cheese on a bagel and it is cooked soft scrambled and so delicious. The bagels here are soft on the outside and have the right crunch texture on the outside. There aren't to many bagel places on the LES so if you are looking for a good spot look no further and come here. In addition the coffee here is extremely good, I am not sure exactly how they make but i think they put some Thai ice tea in the ice coffee mixture which gives a sweet tasty after taste and the hot coffee is just as good. In regards to speed they are very quick even when they have long lines and the staff is very friendly. In short: - My favorite LES bagel spot - Delicious bagels and coffee - Has all the basic bagels no specialty bagels - Fair prices - Quick but can have long lines during weekend rush hour times

Yelp
David's makes unbelievably DELICIOUS bagels. As big, doughy and fluffy as New York bagels come. David's may even be better than Browns Bagel which is currently my go-to spot. My boyfriend got a bacon egg and cheese on a plain bagel. It was made to perfection, and the XL bagel's taste did not overpower the eggy goodness. I found it on GrubHub and was lucky that they delivered it to the Murray Hill area.
google avatar

Michelle B.

Yelp
The garlic chive cream cheese-OMG. Got that on an everything bagel and it was divine. I was warding off vampires all day with my breathe. There was only a small line when I arrived and I did not have to wait long at all. This is a traditional bagel spot that is not to be missed.
google avatar

Susanna M.

Yelp
It doesn't look like much but I absolutely adore this shop. It's a wonderful place to get delicious bagels and not nearly as crowded as other shops, which is a blessing but they're really good with food options. I can get something really healthy or something sweet. It just depends on the day. The portions are big and 110% worth the price.

Jeremiah A.

Yelp
Not the greatest bagel joint in the entire city, but fast, great service, and they use GOOD QUALITY BACON. That place across the street ess-a-bagel gives out bacon that is all white (fat), this place gives you some all meat bacon slices.

Rose R.

Yelp
Awful. Came here because Infatuation gave it such high marks- this was hands down the WORST bagel I've had in NYC. The outside edges were stale, the inside edges were too chewy- and the butter was rancid. I felt nauseous immediately upon eating, nothing seems to make it stop- and absolutely I will not be back! As always, you can't believe everything you read. My guess is the writer at Infatuation has a personal connection. In no way is this even an ok bagel. And the vibe- cafeteria at an old folks home. Bleh

Yelp
I enjoy the bagels here more so than other locations in the area, I treat my friend here too sometimes. What upsets me is the nasty attitude of the woman who wears the light blue hat all the time with glasses and dark hair. SHE SHOULD NOT BE SO NASTY!!! THIS WILL DRIVE YOUR LOYAL CUSTOMERS AWAY. TELL HER TO STOP BEING SO MEAN AND USING CUSS WORDS TOWARD THE CUSTOMERS. IF you hate your job so much find another one!!!!!! She is not only rude and nasty to me.
google avatar

Jessica L.

Yelp
Amazing bagels. I got an onion bagel toasted with lox cream cheese. The bagel was perfectly crisp yet pleasantly chewy and the lox spread was surprisingly light despite the huge chunk that's smeared across the bagel. I was able to eat one half for lunch and save the other half for dinner. One star taken off because I thought the shop itself looked a little dull. Also, $5 credit card minimum.
google avatar

Tina C.

Yelp
Sunday summer travels puts an abate to my hunger pangs for a bagel sandwich, at least I hope for substance. For a single turkey, ham with honey mustard onion bagel, un-toasted at $6.80 was hardness as a rock. Aija! It was enough to ensure one's loss of teeth and a guarantee visit to a periodontist. Stale is an understatement as the hardness was last WEEK's bagels. MEH. My bagel sandwich is not remotely fresh nor softness to bring fluffy ness. Staff appeared disgruntled robotics to serve patrons amid not the most friendly nor helpful. Bagels selections are rather limited to the standard: onion, plain, salt, egg, cinnamon, sesame, and raisin but nothing to further piqued my interest especially with a robotic disgruntled staff. According to their takeout menu "everything is done on premises" which implies the dough and baking as I presume. Air conditioning is weak albeit seating is plentiful. This bagel shop fends off a standard dark and dingy dilapidated diner setting. Thompson Square Bagels, locates on Avenue A, can absolutely craft and hone a far better substantial bagel.

Yelp
Came here for all the raving Yelp reviews. And for a lox and lox spread bagel. For $11, it includes a flimsy slice of smoked salmon. Definitely not the best I've had. And yes, it was toasted. Go to Tasty Cafe instead, if you are willing to make the trip. They'll add capers and other toppings if you request... http://www.yelp.com/biz/tasty-cafe-new-york
