Two words...food poisoning! My husband and I have eaten at Dawat several times over the years. We went last Saturday night and noted how tired and rundown it seemed--the food, the decor and the service. The food was largely bland and boring, nothing like what it used to be. I ordered a shrimp dish and some cauliflower soup, which my husband didn't share. The highlight of the meal was a tasty piece of tandoori chicken and the naan, both fresh out of the tandoor. Other than that the meal was totally forgettable. When we left I told my husband we wouldn't be back anytime soon. Two hours later the projectile vomited started, soon followed by diarrhea, and continued every 15-20 minutes for the next seven hours. I was so sick I was on the verge of heading to an urgent care center. My husband was fine and we had shared the same meals for the past 24 hours, so I knew the cause. After spending the next 48 hours in bed ( that's how sick I was!) I was back in the neighborhood and dropped into Dawat to tell them what had happened. The man I spoke with (the only staff in sight and someone who had waited on us a few days before) denied responsibility and argued with me. No "I'm sorry, what can we do to make amends?" or any expression of concern or sympathy. Just claims of no responsibility. I'll never return to Dawat, ever. There are so many excellent, well-priced Indian restaurants in NYC. Do yourself a favor and avoid Dawat!
