An Essential Guide to Paczki Day 2020 in Metro Detroit | Eater Detroit

"Tucked along Maple Road in Birmingham, I found this compact coffee bar has, for the past three years, been enticing customers with Swedish open-faced sandwiches, kanelbullar cinnamon rolls, and kolasnittar caramel shortbreads; the semlor — palm-sized cardamom buns made with white flour and filled with generous helpings of almond paste and swirls of whipped cream, sliced so that a triangle-shaped, golden-brown piece of bun can be dusted with powdered sugar — have become a particular favorite in the lead-up to Fat Tuesday." - Eater Staff

Metro Detroit’s Svenska Cafe Serves Swedish Semlor Pastries on Fat Tuesday - Eater Detroit

"Svenska Cafe, located along Maple Road in Birmingham, has been offering Swedish open-faced sandwiches, kanelbullar cinnamon rolls, and kolasnittar caramel shortbreads for three years. Notably, the semlor—a Swedish pastry made with cardamom buns filled with almond paste and whipped cream—has gained popularity, especially around Fat Tuesday. The pastries are made by Ingela Oginsky, who learned to bake from her mother. The cafe attracts Swedish expatriates, including hockey players from the Detroit Red Wings, and those seeking to reconnect with their Swedish heritage. Svenska Cafe is located at 930 E Maple Rd. in Birmingham and takes orders for semlor via Facebook up until Easter." - Brenna Houck

Great service and a very cute cafe. I ordered a simple cortado and it was pretty good. I was not overly impressed by the cortado or the smoothness of the espresso in it but I was pretty good. I will say the device was great and the environment was also very nice. I think the cafe probably shines in its special flavored lattes/drinks and less so in the "classics" such as cortados, macchiatos and plain cappuccinos. Good experience and I will likely be back to try a specialty latte.

Our first time to this sweet café was lovely! Our pistachio coconut latte and cappuccino were delicious. We especially loved the decor inside and flower planters and seating outside. We noticed the friendly staff greeting regulars by name. We will be back to try more of the menu soon!

Impossible to get to with current construction but 100% worth the effort!! Delicious, quality food and drinks (gluten free and dairy free/allergen free options!!). Staff was so friendly and accommodating and really nice! Cute design and interior and loved the outdoor seating options! Highly recommend!

This cute, cozy coffee shop has tasty salads, gluten-free treats, and fun drinks. I had the pistachio coconut latte it was just right, not too milky or watered down. Worth stopping by!

Wow! This is my third time here. Just wow. The coffe is superb and the desserts taste truly home made! I can’t remember I’ve bought baked goods that tasted this good. Also, the service is truly incredible- I had a question and the staff went above and beyond!

This is hands down my favorite cafe/coffee shop in Birmingham!! The drinks are well crafted and creative, the pastries are unreal, and the sandwiches are delicious. 10/10 would recommend a try!!

Daycap Coffee is one of those rare spots that instantly feels like a favorite. Their iced banana date latte is the kind of drink you sip slowly just to make it last. It’s smooth, not overly sweet, and layered with subtle notes that evolve as you taste it. It’s comfort and intrigue in a single cup. I paired mine with one of their cardamom cakes, which was tender, fragrant, and just the right amount of flavor to complement the richness of the latte. There’s real attention to flavor here and nothing feels mass-produced or rushed. The atmosphere matches the menu: thoughtful, warm, and quietly confident. A gem for anyone who appreciates quality without pretense.

I’ve tried a lot of cheesecakes, but this one was by far the weirdest I’ve ever tasted. The flavor was off, and the texture didn’t feel right. On top of that, the coffee wasn’t as good either – it lacked flavor and was just disappointing overall. Svenska, the previous owner of this coffee shop, is way better in both quality and taste. Definitely not what I was expecting, and I won’t be coming back for more!

Yelp
A cute little cafe that I didn't know existed. We came here for our first stop for a mystery date package, and unfortunately the shop had new owners and didn't honor the pre-purchased package. Despite that, very strong coffee and good sandwich. The services are smaller more aligned with traditional european sizes however. I'd definitely give them another try.

Yelp
The service was friendly but slow. We had this exchange: Me: How is the soup? Server: I'm not sure we have soup, let me check. 10 minutes later, my soup came out of a microwave at a satanic molten lava temperature. No crackers! The matcha was pretty good. When the soup cooled, it was good enough but not spectacular. I wouldn't come here for food. Or if you have a time crunch. But it's cute. European-cozy ambience. And it was friendly, that matters!

Yelp
this cafe has new ownership and the coffee is outstanding. Best in Detroit. Also the pastries, sandwiches and breakfast eats are delish. This is not your typical zip in and out cafe as evertyhing is made fresh by the owner and staff, so plan to spend a minute - it's worth it. also love supporting an independent small business.

Yelp
Service was rude. Display case appeared smudged and contained items looking not very appealing. Latte I ordered contained 4 ingridients and they were out of one of them. The name outside says a different same than Svenska.
