The Best New Affordable Hotels in the World: 2024 Hot List

"A former 17th-century clapboard inn located in a fishing village just a 20-minute cycle from downtown Amsterdam, De Durgerdam has been restored and relaunched as a friendly hotel, with astonishing food by the team behind Michelin-starred restaurants 212 and De Juwelier. Named after the historic village it calls home, the 14-room creation is a celebration of simple, low-impact design, with a mix of vintage and custom-made furniture, including Hypnos beds with beautiful wave-inspired local tulipwood headboards; but also of the golden age of Vermeer, through its moody use of natural light, velvety throws, and palette of green, rust, and putty. The relaxed open-plan restaurant, De Mark, takes over the whole ground floor and is already a local favorite, with a wood-burning stove, a bar, and doors that open onto a terrace overlooking saltwater lake Ijmeer (an inlet of the North Sea until it was dammed in 1932). It’s overseen by head chef Koen Marees, known for his imaginative, vegetable-forward menus featuring dishes such as tomato steak tartare and roasted cod with buttermilk and cream of barbecued celeriac. Downstairs is a candlelit wine snug. Guests can whiz into town in a cab, hire one of the hotel’s electric bikes to explore, or just cozy up by the fire. The braver among them scamper down the hotel jetty and leap into the lake. From $330. —Francesca Syz" - CNT Editors

Our Favorite Hotel Restorations From the Past Year

"The clapboard house containing De Durgerdam was, from the 17th century on, a fisherman’s inn — now, with some help from a modern addition, it’s a 14-room luxury boutique hotel with personality and atmosphere to spare. Inside you’ll find a hotel that’s a tribute to the house’s maritime history, but not a reproduction — the style is eclectic, with plenty of modern influence alongside its historical details." - Mark Fedeli

August: Our Most Exciting New Hotels

"This hotel trades the elbow-to-elbow canal houses of Amsterdam's dense city center for a lakeside idyll. De Durgerdam was a fishermen's inn in the 17C, but it's now a luxurious 14-room boutique hotel with personality and atmosphere to spare." - The MICHELIN Guide UK Editorial Team

The Best Affordable Hotels in Europe, According to Travel Experts

"This 14-room waterfront inn is in a tiny fishing hamlet on the eastern outskirts of Amsterdam. Co-owned by Paul Geertman of the Amsterdam-based company Aedes and designed by Buro Belen, the design was inspired by the traditional cottages and furniture of the region, which means cosseting spaces swathed in neutral tones reminiscent of putty — all the better to capture the soft glow of light reflecting off the water. It’s like a Dutch Golden Age painting come to life. Doubles from $336." - Travel + Leisure Editors

We had a wonderful stay here and felt so very much welcomed. Beautiful and quiet room, as it is similar to an apartment with the entrance separated from the others. No noise of other guests! Already when we entered the room it was clear we would have a great time here. Soft music playing, very nice relaxing and luxurious atmosphere, great bed, cushions and lighting. Diner at the restaurant was a same welcoming experience with very good food and presentation and attentive staff. Needless to say that breakfast was according to the same high standards. Everything you might wish for at breakfast was there and the staff helpful and pleasant as ever. The hotel has a terrace close to the water. We did not sit here because of the temperature outside but I can imagine how nice it would be to eat or have a drink there when the terrace is open during warmer days. I highly recommend the place. Both for a stay in the hotel or simply having lunch or diner at the restaurant. We went back home well rested and cuddled looking forward to come back here with friends or family.

De Durgerdam was one of the finest boutique hotel experiences I've ever had. From the moment we arrived, we felt cared for. The room we booked was exquisite---from the decor to the bathroom and amenities, to the outdoor patio. The restaurant and staff are first rate, meeting every need. The surrounding area is quaint and peaceful, removed from the hustle of the touristy areas of Amsterdam, yet just a quick taxi or Uber ride away. We can't wait to return. Thank you, De Durgerdam!!!

Incredible start to finish. Highly recommend. Every member of staff was polite, welcoming and helpful. Every element of the interior is very considered. The rooms were beautiful with marble bathrooms and gorgeous lighting. The location is beautiful and peaceful. The only pitfall is the need to get taxis/Uber to and from the centre which averaged €30 each way. You can cycle which is around 35 mins on a bike or 20 on an e-bike. I would recommend De Durgerdam reduce the price of the bikes though, €40 per bike is steep. The food and cocktails were all incredible.

Beautiful boutique hotel with comfortable room and five star food in the restaurant - both for dinner and breakfast. We took our bikes and cycled along the well maintained cycle routes in glorious weather. Wonderful staff too who all made an effort to chat to us to make sure everything that we needed was being done|A huge thank you

What a find. From the moment we arrived the staff were exceptional, the room cozy and well appointed. We had a meal first night in the restaurant, atmosphere and food brilliant. Next morning (as a coffee snob) coffee was perfect and breakfast…well we didn’t need to think about lunch. We rented bikes and skadooshed around all day. Incredible location. I cannot recommend this place enough. I should have gave it a low score as it is SUCH a find and will be come a favourite. :)

We had a wonderful time at De Durgerdam Hotel ! It's the perfect retreat for a weekend in the vicinity of Amsterdam, if you prefer coming back to a quiet and laid back vibe. The rooms are beautifully decorated and cosy, and the food is out of this world. Thank you so much !

Simply put, this is one of the most special hotels I’ve ever visited. The space in the rooms and the restaurant are incredible and lovely. But the people are the special sauce here. You do not want to miss the restaurant, the staff are passionate about what they do and could not be more lovely. The location is idyllic and is truly just a short drive or modern bike ride away from Amsterdam proper And it is so nice at the end of the day to drive a few minutes outside of the city to stay. Being on the water is incredibly peaceful and there is just not a more magical place.
