A New Winery Brings Locally Fermented Grapes and a Dog-Friendly Patio to Houston - Eater Houston

"A new winery and tasting room opens this week from a certified vintner and her husband in Northwest Houston. Kristina and Ron Tucker will debut Decant Urban Winery at 948 Wakefield Drive on Wednesday after a relatively short time planning their destination for Houston-fermented wines. The massive 10,000 square-foot space has room for fermenting barrels, a small tasting lounge for 10 to 12 people, and a forthcoming 2,000 square foot tasting room that can accommodate 75 to 150 people with a large dog-friendly patio attached. Kristina is heading up the grapes purchasing and fermenting operations as the head vintner at Decant. Just months ago, she earned a master’s degree in horticulture from Texas A&M with an emphasis in enology after studying biomedical science in undergrad yet deciding not to go into medicine. During her studies, Kristina worked in fine dining and says it was her husband who encouraged her to get a master’s degree in winemaking to turn her side passion into a business. On opening day, Decant will debut three Texas wines to start with including an alberiño, zinfandel, and a cabernet sauvignon, followed by Oregon and Washington state varietals to be released next month including riesling, pinot noir, and syrah. Finally, a handful of Northern California wines will debut in several months’ time to total about 16 varietals on hand in the tasting rooms. As far as food is concerned, Decant plans to share the pizza truck with the neighboring brewery, and offer cheese and charcuterie plates, light bites, and more food options once their larger tasting room is up and running." - Alaena Hostetter

Google
This tucked-away wine bar was a delightful surprise! My wife discovered it while Google Map searching for wineries. We were drawn in by the positive reviews and decided to give it a try. The wine was fantastic, and our server (perhaps part-owner?) was incredibly knowledgeable and helpful, answering all our questions with enthusiasm. We had a wonderful time and are eager to return once their food menu is available. Cheers 🥂 🍷 and enjoy 😉

Google
Really cute spot with great service. The Napa Cab they serve here is good. There’s a small farmers market that sets up across the street on Saturdays. Grabbed a few eggs while we were out!

I went to Decant yesterday for one of their cookie icing classes. It was a lot of fun and the owners put a lot of hard work into making the event special for everyone. I had the Albarino wine and it was really good. It was as close to a Sauvignon Blanc they had, and I was not disappointed. There isn’t much in the way of food items except for some gourmet popcorn and potato chips. I’m looking forward to going back to the wreath making class they have in November. It’s a very family friendly spot with lots of things to do.

Google
I had a lovely date here! Service was nice and welcoming! The snacks were great, and I definitely will be back for more! Great selection of wine and plenty of seats for you and your friends! The music really sets the atmosphere for the place, very chill vibes!

Google
I came here for a Sofar event hosted by Decant Winery and I had such an amazing time! Their staff is very respectful, kind, patient, and they make really good drinks! It’s a very calm aesthetic & drinks are reasonably priced. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a calm day/evening out

Google
Great experience! The owner was so friendly and took the time to tell us about the origin and description of each wine. He made our team feel welcomed. It was fun! We were also able to buy a pizza from the food truck next door and est there.

Yelp
Parking can be a pain, there is limited parking at the winery , and shares a space with other businesses so parking is even tighter. There is public parking nearby, but a little on the expensive side. Street parking is available, but it's a tight street . Wine is good , but not a wine snob by any means. Staff was helpful and inviting .

Yelp
First time here, and I truly enjoyed myself. My fiancé and I opted to get the flight sampler for $20 as it was our first time. Though the wine is not the absolute best it was still pretty good. I would come back.

Yelp
Loved! Loved! Loved! my experience here. So glad a business partner chose Decant as the location it's executive women's social/happy hour--had an incredible time! The owner gave us a tour/ history of the winery and we had the opportunity to bottle the wine we took home with us. Such a unique wine experience in the heart of Houston. I prefer sweeter wines, but if you have more sophisticated taste buds, you'll probably love what they serve here. The atmosphere screamed rustic elegance. I really enjoyed the beautiful charcuterie offerings and specialty chocolates--there were some unique wine infused options. Definitely worth the drive from The Woodlands!

Yelp
One star review? Five star service with one star wine - and I'd go negative on the wine. Healthy pours for a tasting - four half glasses. Savignon blanc had a mediocre bouquet with a wet vs dry finish like you'd get from a fine New Zealand Marlborough vintage. The mouvedre was seved chilled, had no bouquet, and was monotonal until the finish which was not at all tasty. The Texas cab was so rich in tannins we considered it undrinkable and ditto for the pinot noir - the bouquet on both was unpleasant. They had creative wine cocktails, which could be a great use for these wines. Based on our sampling, we are not fans. Not one wine we sampled was one we would try again outside of a cocktail. Service was outstanding. Perhaps the product will improve.

Yelp
Went with my mom to Decant for Mother's Day. I absolutely love the wines here at Decant!!! We did a flight of Mourvèdre, Pinot Noir, and Rosé for only $15 each. We both loved them all, but for a warm spring day...the Mourvèdre was my favorite! The sweet owners (married couple - Kristina & Ron) said, "It is the PERFECT summer wine." I completely agree! Fun Facts I learned from Kristina & Ron (cause I just appreciate the process and results so much): 1. The grapes Decant uses for the Mourvèdre are from Italy 2. Decant makes their wines in concrete tanks that were made in Italy and is the traditional way of making wine 3. All those flavors are just from grapes, which makes Kristina a wine maker genius! Loved this urban winery and it's owners. We will back!

Yelp
So great! First time in today and loved everything. The owners and her family are the sweetest. Her mom and dad are seen helping out and serving wine and are so sweet to talk to! We did a flight, 3 half pours for $15 I like that they serve you one by one so you don't have to carry multiple glasses or have the others get warm while you drink one! I tried both of the white wines and the syrah. No complaints here :) I noticed people were coming in buying a glass and leaving with it. I asked where they were going? Lol and she told me that they're either going to walking stick brewery or to greater heights brewery! Absolutely love that they're all in support of each other!!!

Yelp
Wine was good. Vibe/time was good. Be aware that the road the winery is located on, is filled with kids on bikes. They will swerve at your car. They will drive up to your car and bang on your side mirror until it breaks then speed away. Enjoy your time!

Yelp
I have two favorite wineries so far here in Houston and I have really enjoyed this evening at The Decant Urban Winery. Yelp
Great wine, generous pours, awesome owners! Felt like we were hanging out at a friends house and drinking wine! Thanks to Kristina and Ron for great conversation and incredible dinner recommendations!

Yelp
Love this winery! Stopped by with 30 minutes till closing and the service was still amazing! They took the time to explain how the winery came about, the history, and let us sample the different wines they had. The second time I stopped by ( back to buy a bottle...walked out with two!).. the owner was there and she's lovely! If you love wine and are looking for a laid back place I truly recommend.

Yelp
Stopped in for a tasting. It's 4 of their wines and a half glass each pour. My husband and I split the tasting. They source their grapes but make all of their wines. They age in cement. Their sauvignon blanc lacked a dry finish expected but had a floral forward flavor. The mouvedre was light but good. The Texas cabernet sauvignon was bitter and inky. The petit syrah tasted like nail polish remover.

Yelp
Check this place out! It is a hidden gem! Their wine is fabulous and the owners are so nice! They even did a bunch of animal charity events (pre-covid) which I absolutely love! The only thing I am upset about is I didn't discover them soon enough! Go try their wine, you wont be disappointed!

Lorrie T.

Yelp
Love the boutique wines and more so the lovely couple that owns the winery!! Great charcuterie boards (remember to order ahead) and great meet up place!

Beth J.

Yelp
Decant is a great place to go! Whether you meet a few friends or want to organize a party! Kristina & Ron have created a special little place in GOOF: our own winery in the heart of Houston

Yelp
I am a big pinto noir drinker but I had never had pinot nouveau. Theirs is delicious and the wine crafters are kind and helpful! Stop in as this is a not to be missed spot!

Yelp
Adorable winery that I just visited for the first time. Loved that they had the big screen on for Astro's World Series viewing. They have 7 or 8 wines, I believe and I love that all of the wines are their own. The flight of 3 was $15 and I loved the three that I had. Customer service was great. It's also neat that you're able to take the wine into the neighboring breweries or bring beer into the winery (if you're with a group that has different preferences, which was my case). I'll definitely be back to Decant!

Yelp
Best customer service and amazing wines. My husband and I enjoyed tasting the varieties. Can't wait to pop the bottles and share with my family. Thank You from the Aguilar's Goodyear AZ

Yelp
Love this place. Kristina is an Aggie, Whoop, who mentored under one of our fav Texas winemakers, Chris Brundrett of William Chris. She is making excellent wines from Texas High Plains and NW coast Columbia Valley grapes. Check out their Facebook page for fun events for adults and families. Great addition to the GO/OF neighborhood.

Yelp
I've loved every glass I've ever had here. This place is a gem on the inside and (just like wine), gets better over time. Check it out!

Yelp
My wife and I had a lot of fun and liked all 3 of their current wines. It is warm and feels like you are in someone's living room. We ended up talking to everyone else in the tasting room and enjoyed the cheese plate. Will definitely check it out again.

Karen W.

Yelp
Amazing. We loved everything. Charming space . The cab is divine. We also had the cheese board which was more than enough. Can't wait to see this place bloom. Glad to have a winemaker so close by. Highly recommend.

Sarah D.

Yelp
The owner is super nice and she said they plan on expanding back area but for now it is a cute small living room type feel. You can bring food but they plan on having a kitchen. I loved the Zinfandel and cab. I did not try the white. Went once on a walk with the family and then came back the next day with some girlfriends. I am excited to try the new wines she has coming out soon

Melissa T.

Yelp
So thrilled about this newest addition to the neighborhood! The wine here was fabulous and we can hardly wait for new additions to their tasting menu! My husband and I came on a Saturday evening and got a flight of the current 3 wines they have all made from grapes grown in Texas. The tasting room is a bit small, but they have plans to expand throughout this year. Overall, highly recommend! We will be back.

Yelp
Really cool early stage warehouse winery. The winemaker has a master's degree which she got at Texas A&M in oenology and agriculture. We did a tasting of both the whites and the reds. Their Cabernet Sauvignon won the 2019 Houston livestock show and rodeo silver and was out of stock (that's a good thing). Their Pinot Noir and Syrah are from Washington and their Zin was a Texas high plains that got better as I drank it. Both Oregon reds were amazing. They only had 2 whites, both from Texas... and gave her a red to sub for the 3rd pour. The whites were very floral yet dry but to her liking. Pours are very generous so enjoy it while it lasts. They've been open a little more than a year. They have a light menu for food items like cheese plates and other light fare but it's very chill so bringing your own slab of bbq ribs if you want and get a bottle of Texas Zinfandel wont be against the rules. You don't need to hit Fredericksburg if you don't want. The cool thing is they are between a brewery and a family bar so they have an agreement that wine drinkers can take glasses to the brewery and vice versa. Being that it's in the middle of Garden Oaks it's got a great vibe. Additionally... and this is very important...these guys are priced very reasonable and obviously tired from their efforts. Come and patronize them you WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.

Shiv M.

Yelp
Awesome, locally run urban winery. Came in on a Saturday with a group of friends to do some wine tasting! It was $15 for 3 wines, and really worth it. The size of the pour was more of full glass instead of a tasting but we were not complaining. The entrance/front area looks super nice and classy. It was busy when we came in but they have a huge back area with seating which was perfect for us. We all really enjoyed our wines and the cheese board we ordered. Definitely worth checking out!
