"Del Popolo is a chic sit-down option in the area, and we especially love the secluded garden patio in the back. Their incredible wood-fired pizzas always come charred with bubbly crusts, and there are plenty of small seasonally rotating plates like little gem caesar salads and roasted brussels sprouts to go around. "Amidst all the fast-casual chains and overpriced tourist traps around Union Square, Del Popolo is a bright spot. Their incredible Neapolitan-style pizza draws us in, even when we aren’t in the area picking up our laptop from the Genius Bar or touching expensive duvet covers at the mall—the wood-fired crust always comes out gorgeous and chewy. There are nine options to choose from, but whichever route you go, the toppings, like spicy sausage and olives or garlicky mushrooms, are excellent across the board. The open space is centered around a big, blazing oven and crowds arrive early to score every last no-reservations seat.Del Popolo may have gotten its start as a food truck, but one bite of their wood-fired pizzas and it's clear how it earned its address. Chewy, blistered and deliciously caramelized, the crusts arrive laden with toppings both traditional (mozzarella, crushed tomato and basil) and California cool (roasted winter squash, mascarpone, spring onions). Don’t sleep on the antipasti either, since the starters are first-rate. "To get to the cozy, plant-filled wooden deck at Del Popolo, you’ll be led downstairs below the restaurant, eventually popping out in their back patio. They have bigger picnic tables outside for larger groups, where you can spread out and dig into Italian small plates and pizzas with bubbly, charred crusts.
