For quick Japanese food, including made-to-order and grab-and-go items, Delica is a good option in the Ferry Building Marketplace. This is a Japanese deli with daytime counter service. It's not a sit-down restaurant and it's not open for dinner (open Monday-Saturday, 9:30am-4:00pm; closed Sunday).
My sister used to come here when she worked at one of the office buildings nearby. That's how I found out about this place. Shortly after posting a photo of my 9-item bento box on Instagram and Facebook, I got the following comments from my friends:
"I love Delica for lunch when I go into the office!"
"I used to eat at this place all the time back in the day when I had to go to SFO a lot for one of my cases. I'd cycle through Delica, the grilled cheese at Cowgirl Creamery, and Korean burritos and soups from John's Snack and Deli (RIP)."
When the restored Ferry Building opened in 2003, Delica was one of the original food tenants. Twenty years later, it's still going strong. Tenants have come and gone, but Delica remains. It's stood the test of time, including making it through the Great Recession and the COVID-19 pandemic.
The deli has large displays with all sorts of ready-made Japanese foods. Examples include bento boxes, sushi rolls, poke bowls, onigiri (rice balls), salads (e.g., wasabi garlic potato salad, eggplant salad), and even things like tonkatsu (pork cutlets with sauce) and agedashi tofu steak. In addition, they serve soups like carrot ginger soup and miso soup with tofu, and dishes such as Japanese beef curry and gyudon (bowl of rice topped with seasoned, marinated beef). That said, they don't have anything too elaborate nor earth-shattering here. They keep it simple.
Here are most of the items we got (I think I might be missing an item or two):
* 9-item Bento Box - Assorted Sushi Bento - $16.50
* Poke Don / Salmon Poke - $13.00
* Pork Cutlet (tonkatsu) x2 - $2.75 each a la carte
* Agedashi Tofu Steak - $2.75
* Tempura Udon Noodle - $12.00
* Tofu Miso Soup - $4.00 (cup)
* Spicy Salmon Roll - $13.00
* Ito En Golden Oolong Tea - $2.80
Everything above was grab-and-go except for the tempura udon noodle. We had to go back to the counter about 10 minutes after ordering to pick that up because they had to make that one fresh for us. Generally, for grab-and-go food (temper your expectations), everything tasted good.
The preset 9-item "sushi" bento box came with one piece of an avocado roll topped with spicy tuna, 1/2 a piece of inari (sushi rice wrapped in fried tofu), one piece of a shrimp and crab roll, hijiki and soybean salad, spicy burdock salad, green bean salad, and small samplings of the sweet and spicy chicken, salmon poke, and agedashi tofu steak. The preset selections can vary. Whether you get preset or customize, the bento boxes are a great way to sample lots of what Delica has to offer.
What I thought was interesting were the tonkatsu pork cutlets that were already cooked and ready to go with sauce applied. The tonkatsu had been sitting out and the staff just used a pair of tongs to grab our cutlets and put them in to-go boxes. Unsurprisingly, the tonkatsu here didn't taste as good as the made-to-order tonkatsu I normally get at a sit-down restaurant. Expectedly, it wasn't as hot, crispy, nor savory. The texture just wasn't there, but the flavors were right and it still hit the spot, for the most part. The salmon poke was solid, as was the inari plus all the salads. They excel at the salads, I think. They were fresh and delicious.
Service was good. This place runs like a well-oiled machine.
Delica has no dedicated seating, but the Ferry Building has plenty of indoor and outdoor seating nearby. Some of the tables are communal. If you've never been to the Ferry Building before, this is a very busy and touristy spot with several shops and restaurants. Delica has a prime spot, located right in the center of the building.
