On my continued tracking of one-of-a-kind burger joints, I found Del's. Del's Charcoal Burger has been serving burgers, sandwiches and hot dogs all flame grilled to perfection since 1957. The longevity and pictures here on Yelp, gave me great call to visit with my burger and wine (BYOB) lunch bunch.
I don't need to repost the history of this place and I must tell you that it readily deserves a rating of 4 Stars for burgers.
We came in, sat, opened a nice bottle of Malbec and breathed in the atmosphere. Nostalgia from the '50s adorn the walls, like the full posters of James Dean on the men's restroom door and Marylin Monroe on the ladies. But there is Dallas Cowboy stuff all over and the TV was on with ESPN.
We ordered three bacon cheeseburgers with tator tots, onion rings and sweet potato fries. Along with the wine, we asked for 3 waters with lemon. The man at the cash register who took the order was so very professional, efficient and made sure that I was properly directed to self serve where the large lemon slices were to put into our waters.
This being Texas, there was a plethora of different kinds of hot sauce to take to our table (two rows of family style tables put together, while there were several other four tops).
When the burgers were ready, my first thought was that they seemed to be a bit small. But after biting into mine, I was pleasently surprised at the crispness of pickles, lettuce and flavor of the burger. Bun was toasted perfectly and double mustard on both sides.
Tots, fries, and onion rings were perfect.
The only disappointment was dessert. We were hoping to try their fried pies, but was informed that they sold out from the previous weekend and the only item was a fried Twinkie. OK. We tried it. It was like trying a fried this or that at the State Fair, but not as expensive. We can say "Yes. We tried it."
One of my dining companions said "I have been in Dallas since 1957 and never knew about this place. I am surprised."
As I now live way up North in McKinney, driving down to pick up my friend from Highland Park and back to Richardson seems a bit far. But when you are telling people about a Burger Journey, it just seems logical to try it and see why it has been around since 1957.
I highly recommend this place.
