Our mortgage process with Delta Community Credit Union was less than stellar. First, they never answered their phones when we called them. Second, they haggled with us over the smallest things. For example, we contractually agreed with our sellers that a small coffee cabinet would remain with the house we were buying. DCCU saw this and insisted that we remove the coffee stand, place a value on it, and settle it outside of the contract. When we refused to do this, they further insisted until our real estate agent informed them that the coffee stand had to remain in the contract as is. Interestingly, they did not insist on the same thing with the refrigerator, which we also had contractually agreed would stay with the house.
In addition to this, when we transferred $2,000 from our savings to checking to cover the earnest money check, DCCU wanted a written explanation for why we transferred the money. Keep in mind that we were making a down payment of $285,000 on a $415,000 home, and my wife and I both have excellent credit ratings. DCCU was hardly at risk in our case! Haggling over a coffee stand and interrogating us over a $2,000 transfer from savings to checking was not what we expected from our lender.
The biggest problem we had with DCCU is that they were not upfront about their loan process and what they would and would not include in the loan. For instance, we did not know until the day before our closing that DCCU did not absorb the closing costs into our mortgage loan. We have had several mortgages in the past 40 years, and never were we expected to pay the closing costs out of pocket on the day of closing; the closing costs were always absorbed in the loan. We planned to do the same with our DCCU loan. When we found out otherwise from our attorney (not from DCCU) the day before our closing, we called DCCU, but of course, they did not answer their phones. We had to email them asking them to call us back. When they finally called, they told us they could not add the closing costs to the loan and still close the next day as scheduled. In order to close on schedule, WE HAD TO PAY AN EXTRA $10,000 IN CLOSING COSTS OUT OF POCKET ON THE DAY OF OUR CLOSING. DCCU's response? "Sorry!" We will never use Delta Community Credit Union again and would never recommend them to anyone! They will tell you they communicate transparently and effectively with you, but in reality, they bombard you with an abundance of information and documentation via email, but never have any face-to-face interactions and few, if any, phone conversations explaining what their documents mean. They take their time in getting information to you but insist that you respond to them and sign all their documents as soon as possible. Very disappointed!
Two vice-presidents from Delta Community Credit Union contacted us to address our concerns and rectify the issues raised. As a result, DCCU refinanced our loan without any additional fees charged to us, and absorbed the closing costs into the loan as we had first wished. We appreciate the quick response by the people at DCCU and appreciate them resolving the issues we cited.
