The 13 Best Lunch Spots In Austin - Austin - The Infatuation

"You could show up to Desilicious for lunch or dinner, but it’s especially well-suited to an early visit since the menu has so many classic Indian breakfast dishes, like idly and pongal, plus a great cup of chai if that 8am coffee has already run its course. A meal here is more about the food than the dining room. The AC only kind of works, pre-filled metal pitchers of water sit on all of the tables, and the TV is always playing Indian pop videos through tinny speakers. None of that matters, because they’ve perfected more than 80 varieties of dosa, chapathi, parotta, and other South Indian staples for you to work through over the course of many midday visits." - nicolai mccrary, adele hazan, raphael brion

"The Milwood South Indian restaurant with an incredible punny name offers snacky vegetarian and vegan dishes. The cafe-like menu spans dosas savory and sweet (yes, there’s a Nutella one), along with various breads such as paratha and idli, bajji (fried vegetables and meats), and a really great drinks menu, including Indian filter coffee and masala chai. Takeout orders can be placed in person or over the phone; there are indoor and outdoor dine-in services." - Deven Wilson

Desilicious Cafe Review - North Austin - Austin - The Infatuation

"Desilicious is a South Indian restaurant in North Austin that’s more about the food than the dining room. The AC kind of works, pre-filled metal pitchers of water are sitting on all of the tables, and in the background is a TV playing Indian pop music videos over tinny speakers. They’re open for lunch and dinner, but it feels especially well-suited to an early visit since they offer a lot of classic Indian breakfast dishes. The specialties here are dosa and idly—everything is vegetarian—and whether you choose the thin and crispy crepes or the pillowy steamed rice cakes, you’ll have to decide between dozens of different toppings and fillings. Read through the fine descriptions like a legal document, or just point a finger and randomly pick from the 80+ options on the menu knowing there’s only a 1.25% chance of ordering the same thing twice. photo credit: Richard Casteel photo credit: Richard Casteel photo credit: Richard Casteel photo credit: Richard Casteel Food Rundown photo credit: Richard Casteel Karivepaku Podi Idly All of the idly here have a great texture—the rice cakes are steamed until they have a little bit of bite, but aren’t too chewy or hard. We like the karivepaku podi variety that comes tossed in a spicy curry leaf powder that adds a little earthiness to the dish. It’s also served with a few chutneys and dips that vary a little from day to day. photo credit: Richard Casteel Rava Dosa The rava dosa is lacy and a little crispier than the smooth and glossy dosa more commonly found at Indian restaurants in Austin. It arrives spilling over both sides of the oversized plate with a different set of chutneys and dips each day. It’s crispy and well-seasoned, but giant whole peppercorns occasionally overpower some of the bites. This is great for sharing with the table. photo credit: Richard Casteel Mango Lassi If you’ve had mango lassi before then you know what to expect—slightly tart and creamy, and just a little sweet. Desilicious’ version doesn’t stray too far, but it comes in a cute cup that makes drinking it feel a little more special." - Nicolai McCrary

Best Breakfast Buffet In and Round Austin. Lowest price in town and best taste compared to others. Loved it. Buffet Containing Idly, Vada, Mysore Bonda, Dosa, Poori, upma, Pongal and Complementary(chai, Dhai Bonda and Dessert). Sambar tastes ultimate. 3 chutneys peanut, coconut, Ginger are too good felt like more indian.Idly Podi and ghee on buffet with idly felt like heaven.

We ordered Paper Dosa, Gobi Manchurian, and Dahi Vada. The Dosa and Manchurian were good. However, the Dahi Vada didn’t seem very fresh and tasted slightly stale. It was also a bit different from what we had expected in terms of preparation. (A small suggestion, it might be helpful to mention the specific style of Dahi Vada on the menu to avoid any confusion.)

Desilicious Cafe is a great place if you love Indian vegetarian and vegan food. The dishes are full of flavor and made fresh with tasty spices. The staff is friendly and always happy to help you choose what to eat. The cafe is cozy and a nice place to sit and enjoy a meal.

Tried Karivepaku podi idly and ponganalu. Both are super delicious. Chutney good as well. Prices are very reasonable. Will sure try the restaurant again for other dishes. Unfortunately I have to send my masala tea back. My humble advice for the restaurant is to check for foreign objects before serving the tea with a lid. Edit 6/11/2025: I was suffering from a fever and my wife picked idly from this place for breakfast. They are soo terrible. Very dry and flaky. Seems like they just microwaved day before idly and gave them to us. I had to throw them in trash. Even the chutneys are very watery. Not sure what they were thinking serving this crap.

Google
The idli was delicious, and the dosa was also very good. Filter coffee & chai were ok. The chutneys were very good with both the idli and dosa. I loved that everything was served hot & fresh. Customer service was also 10/10. Would come back :)

Probably the timing, but this place was quiet! Food was above average, we ordered veg keema dosa(apparently a new addition to their menu)and chole bhature. Both were pretty nice. Service needs to be a little better. Overall one time visit if you craving Indian food and quick stop.

Google
The Thali is excellent. Venkat and team provide outstanding food and service. The all vegetarian thali sits lightly on the stomach...filling but not overwhelming.....I will strongly recommend this 'family friendly environment ' restuarant.

Excellent Indian Vegetarian Snacks and Breakfast. Today I had Punugulu, Vada and Kuzhipaniyaram(Gunta Ponganalu) suggest From day specials. Authentic flavors best in Austin. They have wide range of Dosa menu with different flavors. Must visit place for vegetarian and vegan people around Austin.

Yelp
Starch, starch, starch, starch and starch. Outside of a few Portuguese and Hungarian bakeries, Starch has never tasted so good. * * * Desilicious is a small Southern Indian cafe. Think of it as a snack version of Sangam Chettinad Without most of the meat and vegetable dishes but with most of the carbs. BUT OMG WHAT CARBS! Dosas to die for! Vadas and Idlis in sauces that will send you to paradise and back. Sweet pancake desserts that your divine mother made for you in your earlier life! I came out of there supremely happy and stuffed to the absolute gills. If you go, Prudence would suggest that you order one and only one dish, No matter what part of the menu that dish appears in. You may not want to be prudent. If you can't fit into your car after you finish eating here, Have someone go buy you a bigger car. Five Stars All The Way On A Stick!

Yelp
I am extremely disappointed with our visit to this cafe. Granted we went there a bit late in the evening but it was still Saturday evening. I was expecting many people in the restaurant, but it was surprisingly empty. That in itself should have alarmed me, but I gave the benefit of doubt as it was our first time. The next weird thing was that the place is spread out in 2 rooms, but there is almost no tables/chairs in the first room. It is almost empty, which did not look right, and as a matter of fact, I thought the restaurant was closed. Anyway, we were seated by the staff and explained right away that the Rava Dosa we came for is unavailable, which they confirmed on the phone earlier was available. So we ordered a few items like mirchi bajji, a flavored dosa, noodles, samosa chat. Except for noodles, all the food was just meh. Either the food was not hot (Dosa) or there was no flavor for the Samosa Chat. The mirchi bajji was ok but was very expensive. The real frustration came to us, when the staff did not even give us the proper cutlery to eat the food, ask for a refill of water, (especially for kids after the mirchi bajji), or if we need anything else that we need to order. Their only concern was that the kitchen was closing in a few minutes, and they needed to place the order soon. I can understand that they may be in a hurry to wrap up the night, but ours was a big enough party for them to give attention. When the final bill was presented, I just went ahead and paid the bill after giving a meagre 5% tip as we were very disappointed. Little did I know that they already charged me 15% for a huge party (more than 6 people). Are you serious, you have not served us properly, the food was meh, and all the time you were standing behind us waiting for us to wrap up our meal, you did not ask us for a refill of even water, and charged us 15% as service fee. I called the restaurant the next day, complaining of the charge, and they said that the owner would reach out to me, but never heard from the owner till today,. So word of caution, we were fooled by all the great reviews for this restaurant, but it did not even come close to being a decent one. I really would like to see a vegetarian restaurant like this do well, but to my disappointment, that is not happening with this restaurant, at least with my experience.

Yelp
Ok, the food was okay, maybe even good. But the menu doesn't accurately reflect the cost. Every item was a few dollars more than the menu said. When we pointed out that fact to the waiter, he explained that it's higher on Sunday (or that's what I think that's what he said -- very difficult to understand). In the first place, it was Saturday, not Sunday, and in either case, no such weekend pricing was mentioned on the menu, or anywhere else. Just be transparent about the pricing. Is that too much to ask? I'd consider going back, were it not for the those silly electronic gadgets. No printed bill, no chance to check for errors. Just a gadget unceremoniously shoved under my nose. I have a new policy: I won't return to a restaurant that does that. Sorry.

Yelp
Transport yourself to an authentic Indian vegan restaurant and you would arrive at Desilicious cafe. I met a friend for lunch and we both were more than pleased with our sampler combo meal. As we stepped in the restaurant we were met with a familiar Indian incense. We had the Mini Tiffins Weekend Combo (1 idly, 1 vada, pongal, mini dosa.) We had a dosa filled with a potato mixture...so yummy! It felt like the dosa was fresh off the stove as it was nice and hot. We also were served three different sauces. Each of the sauces was delicious (at first glance I thought that was the name of the restaurant). When I first went to Bangalore India there were only vegetarian restaurants, so I grew to love a vegetarian meal. The flavor and the crispness of the dosa was as familiar as reuniting with a childhood friend. The idly (made from rice and lentils) was airy, lite and ideal for dipping into the sauces. The entry way filled with spiritual symbols which is common to see in authentic Indian restaurants and instantly made me think of Bangalore. We also had lemon ginger tea, which was aromatic and soothing to drink. Important to note, tea was served in a cup the size of espresso coffee. Prices were very affordable and portions generous. Service was good and we were checked out after our meal by a waiter using a portable cashiers machine. Ice was not available, however, as an exceedingly generous gesture our waiter gave me a large bottle of cold water. This cafe was a great find! The food was delicious and tasty. Suggest you give the cafe a try.

Yelp
If you want to eat good fresh and tasty South Indian food, Desilicious Cafe is the place. We ordered paneer bhurji dosa, uttapam, Podi thatta idly, pongal, Puran poli. Everything was very tasty, right level of spicy and they gave good quantity of coconut chutney and sambhar. I definitely recommend this place.

Yelp
During our weekend trip to Austin, we visited this decently sized and clean Indian restaurant that added a lively touch by showing a cricket match, much to the guests' delight. The service was really good. We ordered a variety of items, including idlis, uttappa, and different types of dosas. One dosa was notably huge, easily serving two or more people as the menu suggested. Unfortunately, the dosas fillings lacked flavor. However, the uttappas were really good and highly recommended. While the experience was pleasant, I wouldn't go back, preferring to explore other places for idli and dosas.

Neha G.

Yelp
Tried rava masala dosa and onion chilli uttpam. Both good quality. Buttermilk is very tasty as well. Rava dosa is good quantity so definitely enough for one. Uttpam is different from other south Indian places, very thin and crispy type, maybe that's why felt as less quantity. Refill of sambhar and all chutney are available upon asking. This time I got to try ginger chutney as well, really well mix of ginger spike with tanginess. Coconut chutney had A little bit of bitter taste, not sure why. But yeah overall good experience once again. Also I like their hand wash station, outside of washroom, easy to access and saves from crowd as well.

Yelp
If you're missing the small neighborhood cafes from back home, in India and that also have a very personalized taste and service - then look no further! This is it! Desilicious cafe is a fresh addition that was much needed to expand Austin's Indian food offerings. The place is really nice, to sit down and experience nostalgia through the food. If you like Puran poli, definitely give it a try!! Highly recommended!

Yelp
Came here with my Dad who was visiting for the weekend. I normally don't go to desi restaurants that serve thalis (large platters with samplings of food and rice) since I'm usually not that hungry to eat everything on my own, so I enjoy having a thali once in a while when I have someone to share it with! The South Indian thali is full of delicious samplings, and it comes with a ton of rice! We also ordered onion samosas, and they came out as six flaky samosas (the crust was much lighter than what I am used to with regular Indian samosa, which has a thick and darker crust) with a refreshing green chutney. Everything all together was less than $20 before tip. The staff was friendly too, and entertainment came in the form of Bollywood music videos playing from a TV screen, haha!
google avatar

Bhagyashree B.

Yelp
Everything was very tasty and authentic. Onion rava dosa took a while (as it usually does take time to crisp) but it was huge and crispy with fried onions and peppercorn and totally worth the wait. All the chutneys and sambhar were delicious. Schezwan cheese dosa was so different and spicy. They have so many dosa varieties, I wanna go back to try a few more. The South Indian thali is also a good option if you're looking for a full meal, with variety of curries, chappatti, dal, papad and rice. The food is very filling, both for the tummy and the heart :) It's a new restaurant so giving them the benefit of the doubt as the indoor seating and decor is still a work in progress.

Yelp
Let's me start with saying this - I'm so THANKFUL to have found this cafe. Convenient location off of Parmer Ln and They should not be surprised to see me as regular because the following: Food- literally so desi-ly delicious. Everything I ordered during the two visits was perfectly cooked and so was the crispness. On my first visit, I had ordered Punugulu, Masala dosa, Chettinad dosa, Tomato Onion uttapam, and bullet coffee. My second order was Masala dosa, Cheese Schezuan dosa, Ghee Roast dosa and bullet and filter coffee. Ghee roast dosa, uttapam, punugulu are a must try. Crispness of ghee roast dosa was on point and the flavorsome uttapam took me back to eating authentic uttapams in India. Punugulu is basically medu vada but in different shape, and the taste, crispness was perfect. The chutneys and sambhar are just as mouth watering. Ambiance- it is very casual and low key. Usual set up table chairs. There's a small utensil station you have to pick cutlery from on your own. Something that I would never mind in general and especially when the food is this good. Service- friendly helpful staff. Might take a minute or two for you to get seated since they don't have a host waiting at the entrance always to welcome guests. Parking- own private and free parking right in front and around restaurant.

Yelp
DW and I visited for lunch; ordered a south Indian thali and a madurai malli dosa. The dosa was quite good, said my wife; she did wish they had served her more sambar however. Chutneys were tasty. The thali was served with one chappati, sweets, and enough rice to feed a hungry football player. Not being one, I decided to quit after consuming about half the rice. The curries were good and tasty, particularly the mango pachadi, the rasam, and the small side of fried rice. Nothing was overly spicy or oily. I asked for an add-on chappati, which was billed extra (fair). Two cups of south Indian filter coffee to wash everything down, and we were good. Down to earth ambience, adequate parking, and friendly service.

Yelp
Came here with family for lunch and it was so delicious!!!! I got the masala dosa and the idli sambar and they were sooo good!!! The dosa was so nice and crispy and the idli was so buttery soft!! The tomato achaar was to die for!!! The service was also super fast and we didn't wait for long to get our food. Definitely coming back here!!

Fenil S.

Yelp
The food is really good! One less star for not so hot food- especially Sambhar. I loved Karivepaku Podi Idly and Schezwan noodles! We had Ananthapur Kaara Dosa which was very tasty; plus we asked for spicy level- and they made it so as per my expectation. The Chettinaad Dosa is the most famous here and it was worth the fame! The potato stuffing inside had many delicious flavours. Onion Chilli Uttapam was hot, fresh, and tasty! Lastly, I liked their sambhar (was not hot though) & all chutneys except tomato chutney (I've had better). Very friendly staff! Ambience was okay, nothing too fancy, lots of space.

Yelp
They can veganize most of the menu if you ask, so major points for that! The szewhan dosa was pretty good, though I had been expecting a different style. The podi idly was nicely flavored and had a kick of spice. The paratha special we tried was a dish I'd never seen before and was the best of the three. The space is a little dingy but could easily be made a little nicer ambiance-wise. The service was a little odd but I think they are still pretty new. We will be back.

Yelp
Indian tiffin place newly opened 5 mins from domain is deeply satisfying tiffin cravings for South Indians :) came here for a quick meal of idly and dosa and we were not disappointed . The combos are great for people who want to try more items in small quantities . They have a separate table for people who want different kind of podis. Their chutneys were really good and sambar was decent . Would recommend the vada, pongal and dosa . Thattu idly was decent . Service great as they are newly opened (hoping they maintain the quality and service after they get more crowd). Definitely coming back for some good tiffin!

Yelp
** vegetarian food review ** I have been to this place at least 4 times now and tried 4-5 different things...I have my favorites which I order each time, but we also try a new type of dosa or idly always. Ghee Roast Dosa - this is my personal favorite!!! If you want to have something light, with no masala at all, and if you like the flavor of ghee on dosa then this is a MUST TRY!!! It's perfectly crispy and delicious! Love it! Idli sambhar and vada sambhar - again, too good, idli is very soft and tastes best with the sambhar. Madurai Mali dosa/idli - the dosa has geeen colored masala and has mint kinda flavor which is quite good, I personally am not a fan but it was a good one to try. Uttappa - amazingggg!!!!! Must try!!!! Their chutneys are all great as well, and sambhar is also lovely. The coconut chutney can be a bit spicy, but it is too good!! Service is great, they are very nice and helpful. There are not as many people here, so it is always a nice place to sit and chat and have a meal.

Yelp
We were excited to find a South Indian spot in North Austin, but this place really missed the mark: All dishes were freshly prepared, but had bland flavors and small portions relative to their price. Service was friendly and disorganized; we saw several parties receive the wrong dishes while we were there. Tables were dirty and greasy. The vada we ordered were a bit bland. The $7 order had two small pieces, and the chutneys were not great pairings. The chili onion uttapam was good but a bit simple. The batter was bland and so we really only tasted the toppings. The mysore masala dosa was the best item we had---great preparation and good filling. The plantain baji was three small pieces, and had some stringy peel in it. I can't recommend this dish.

Yelp
The food is excellent here, especially as a vegetarian. Their menu is expansive and offers familiar favorites and new treats to explore. Their staff was super friendly and the atmosphere is calming and relaxed. If I lived closer, I'd be there every week!

Yelp
We ordered Madurai malli dosa, idli and veg thali. Food was delicious. Sambar was little less. They could have given more but other than that we were very happy. Will definitely come back.

Yelp
It was a casual cafe with a nice gentleman to take our order. Dosas we're good - standard - and the chutney, sambhar was reliable. We weren't blown away but would certainly return.

Yelp
Just ate dinner here at this cute little local café! Yay to my neighborhood (near Parmer and Mopac). I've been curious about DESILICIOUS café ever since they opened and with all the good reviews, I had to try it! So here's the thing... I'm one of those awkward people that feels a little uncomfortable going in and ordering things that I know nothing about. ! I freaking love Indian food but it's so complex and there's so much I don't know I always stick with the same couple of things I know about., Saag paneer, tika masala etc. Well, I've had a hard day and I was in an "aw eff it" mood, and I walked in there, clueless!! I told the owner I loved Indian food and asked her to order me something yummy and boy did she! She was so helpful and so warm. The place was full of very happy diners that seem to know what they were doing and I didn't even care or feel uncomfortable! I got some crispy onion, ring, kind of things and paneer dosa with four distinctly different, but perfectly harmonious sauces wow! Just DELICIOUS! I can't wait to go back I think they're going to do great and I'm so happy they're close by! Go check them out! You won't regret it.

Jeff N.

Yelp
We walked in around lunch and weren't sure what we were going to order as we didn't recognize a lot of the menu items and this is a newer restaurant to the area. We ordered the vegetable thali and Chettinad dosa and a few things stood out: 1. Very helpful and friendly service - our server provided excellent recommendations! 2. The food was delicious with pretty large portions! 3. There was no wait, no big production to go through like many Austin restaurants. We will be back!

Bijoy G.

Yelp
Welcome to South India! You will be immersed in the music, smells and desi-licious food of the south. ("Desi" is Hindi for Indian). Rohith takes care of all of his guests efficiently and with care and attention. I had the Thali, the classic southern dish and every dish was a winner. Suffice to say, I had to take food home because the plate feeds two! Thanks to Rohith and team for a slice of South India - I'll be back soon!

Yelp
Excellent vegetarian Indian food. Well made , fresh, and not oily. Great option for pick up, delivery, or in-person dining.

Mauli D.

Yelp
We really enjoyed food at this place. Service was also very quick. Definitely will be coming back soon!!

Yelp
Easily the best pure vegetarian restaurant in the town. We loved their podi idli, upma, noodles dosa and ghee roast dosa. Filter coffee is a must after dinner! Simple restaurant with very good taste. It's our go to place every weekend.

Yelp
Food was indeed del(s)icious. We ordered podi idli, chettinaad dosa, Ghee roast masala dosa, DC special Babubali dosa and Schezwan Noodles dosa and all taste really good.

Lee D.

Yelp
We visited this place for the first time. The items on the menu were reasonably price. I got the mini tiffin which was good. My husband got the thali in which the dal and the flavored rice were COLD. The dessert reeked of an artificial flavoring. Also the table we were at was not bussed and we had to ask for water and cups while most other tables had it. it was an okay experience and not sure we will visit again.

G N.

Yelp
More a 3.5 ish. They are currently on a soft opening mode. The cuisine is South Indian with dosas, idli, upma, uttapam and such. The Mysore masala dosa, upma, filter coffee, onion samosas were all good. As long as the expectations are not over the top, it's good. They had the white coconut and red chutney along with sambar served with food. And a variety of powders/podi available on a common table . Because they are just figuring things out, the service is slow. You pay at the counter and pick a table. Seating is limited and because this located in an area with a lot of Indian crowd, it got crowded pretty fas.

Niki V.

Yelp
Flavorful dosa, service was fast and friendly, chill ambiance on a weekday evening. Definitely recommend

Food was good .Friendly staff First impression..While entering the restaurant it looks shabby with the Trash bin and dirty plates And also there was a filthy/drainage smell prevailing in the restaurant that concerned us a lot. I dont know if others noticed....

Yelp
I ordered a masala dosa and it was delicious. There were very few seating options so there was a little bit of waiting in line to place the order. The service was good and the ambiance was nice. It's a new restaurant and feels like they are still trying to find their groove and I believe they are right on track.

Yelp
Loved their options of dips in the cuisine and if you're vegan, then can cater to a lot of the menu! Amazing food and will be coming back! Fast and efficient to your needs. The staff is very friendly

Yelp
Food tasted great and the service was really good. We ordered masala dosa, and ghee roast. Finally, ended the meal with filter coffees which tasted amazing. I like my coffee strong, so will try the bullet coffee next time around. The ambience could be a better but the place is being maintained well.

Yelp
Ordered very basic stuff like Onion uthappam, chapati with Korma and pongal. Tastes of both the items are below average. I skipped my regular go-to restaurant to give this place a try as it is new. Not worth it. I now know why this placed is empty on a weekend evening.

Yelp
Amazing fresh and authentic Indian food, in a cool vibe atmosphere. Food came out fast even in their busiest day! I will be back for sure!

Yelp
Came here last night with a craving for hot and crispy masala dosa and they delivered! We ordered Masala Dosa, Mysore Masala Dosa and idli-wada combo plate. All items were served with tomato chutney, coconut chutney, peanut chutney and sambar. We loved all of them but my personal favorite was the peanut chutney. They also had an assortment of podis to try (black sesame, garlic and Guntur mirchi) and they were all were ok. We then ordered filter coffee which was the perfect finish to our meal. The restaurant was clean and the service was quick. Overall, we liked the experience and we will come back whenever we are in the mood for a South Indian tiffin.

Yelp
The best south indian food in the Austin area. The podi idly is great. Really nice server as well.

Yelp
Had the Onion Rava Dosa. Highly recommend! Staff was kind, service was not lightning fast but quite prompt. Seems like it just opened. Sauces on the side were each individually delicious. The menu has a large selection, so Im sure I will be coming back to taste more.

Yelp
Great Tamilian food, simple ambience that made me utterly nostalgic for my growing up years! Loved it

Yelp
Crazy yummy Dosa (rice crepes) place, so many options. We tried Chatinad Dosa ( crisp with flavors) and Podi Idly with ghee, (dine in). Also Pav Bhaji Dosa To go, awesome food, will be back.

Yelp
Desilicious is exactly that - desi and delicious. It's a simple, unassuming canteen style restaurant. The food tastes just like a home cooked meal, very authentic and flavorful. The ambience is very laid back and relaxed, and the folks working there are very friendly and genuine. I've been there many times, and have never been disappointed.
