The Best Savannah, Georgia, Restaurants | Eater Carolinas

"The story of Desposito’s Seafood started decades ago. This full-time seafood restaurant/part-time community cornerstone was once a full-time watering hole for NASCAR enthusiasts. Last summer, however, Despositos upgraded to a shiny new location at the Savannah Bend Marina. The sprawling new Desposito’s still has everything we loved about the old one — neon blue beer lights, gregarious service, and an expanded menu of boiled shrimp, crab legs, she-crab soup, and everything else you’re craving." - Kiki Dy

Google
I would give this restaurant a solid 9 out of 10. The overall experience was very enjoyable — the service, in particular, was attentive, thoughtful, and made us feel genuinely welcomed. The only small critique I have is that the seasoning on the crab was a bit overpowering. I would have loved to taste more of the natural crab meat flavor, but the spices were a little too heavy-handed. Still, everything else was excellent, and we would gladly return whenever we have the chance.

Stopped by for lunch. Started with their old bay chips, chips were good and crunchy, spice was overpowering. I ordered the fried oyster plate with Mac and cheese. Everything was really good got more oysters than advertised on the menu. Oysters were fried nicely and still juicy on the inside. The Mac and cheese side was awesome . The wife ordered the fried fish basket and the fillet was really big and cooked perfectly. She also got the Mac and cheese. The only issues we had was with our server. This guy needs to find a job soon else. We got a couple of beers which came in cans. The can lids were dirty. He didn’t ask if we wanted a glass, so I had to find another way employee to get glasses. The glasses were filthy. So after they cleaned them I went to have a drink. After we finished our meal we sat around waiting for the server to return which he did not. I found him at the front of the house sitting on the waiting couch hitting his vape and surfing his phone. Servers can make or break a place.

Google
We were looking for a low-key, off-the-beaten-path option for fresh seafood between Tybee Island and Savannah, and Desposito's hit the mark! Very unpretentious. No long list of oyster options to choose from (you get what you get), no hint of fanciness --- just good food. Recommend the lobster mac and cheese.

Google
Tried this place for the first time and did not disappoint. I will be going back for sure! Love that they have a big selection of food. I got the veggie pasta and it was soo good!! Waitress was friendly. We went on a Saturday afternoon so there was a wait but it was worth it.

Google
Our food was great. Place was easy to find and had a nice view of the water. . We got drinks at the bar, which were ok. I got flounder and succotash which were very tasty and fresh. My wife had lobster mac and cheese which we both loved. We sat at the bar but ordered our meal which was fun.

James Murray

Google
4.5 Stars for the total experience. We had great service and a great view of the water. The smoked fish dip was good, but not very fish forward. If you like the taste of fish, it might not be what you expect. The shrimp boil was good with the shrimp and Conecuh making the dish. Family enjoyed the shrimp tacos and fried shrimp.

Google
This is a quintessential seafood house – exactly what we were looking for during our time at Tybee. Food was fresh and very good. Service was super friendly, quick and excellent. Highly recommend; we'll be back again.

Google
My time at Desposito’s Seafood was amazing! They have helped the organization that I serve on Shelter From The Rain a few times whenever we’ve had a fundraiser or simply for their support. Tonight we had a bingo night, where Desposito’s generously allowed us to use their outdoor bar area. The atmosphere was amazing along with the weather! The food was also delicious. I ordered their crispy chicken sandwich and a side of fries. I can’t wait to eat there again!

Yelp
The food and service were very good. I had the Low Country Boil. It was good. Oysters Rockafella was also very good. I will definitely go back again.

Yelp
Enjoyed this place over the weekend, great ambiance, quick service and everything we ordered was decent, a bit salty but great portions and flavors. We will definitely come back for the crabby chips

Yelp
Great is the best way to describe this restaurant! Staff was kind and helpful. The outdoor space is beautiful although we opted to sit inside and enjoy the ac. Everything was delish and cooked perfectly

Guy V.

Yelp
We were very pleasantly surprised. We picked the restaurant based on reviews and that it was by the water. Everything we ordered was delicious and we wished we could go back another day, but we were there because we evacuated for the Hurricane in Florida and it was our last night. We will definitely go back next time we are in the area.

Yelp
The food was awful. The "prawn" tacos were nickel size shrimp in a mess of cabbage. No chili lime sauce. The 2 deviled crabs were inedible, $24.95 to boot! The smoked fish dip was good. The homemade potato salad was a soupy mess of potatoes and watery mayo. The greasy chips gave me indigestion. Most everything on the menu is battered and deepfried and looks the same. Other customers couldn't tell their meals apart when the waitress brought their plates out. It was one of the worst $100.00 meals I've had in a long time. I don't think the waitress would have cared if I mentioned the poor food, and she didn't notice that most of my meal was uneaten when I asked for the check. Don't waste your money.

Yelp
I had the opportunity to join the Eat It and Like It Supper Club at Desposito's. For someone who has never been here...it was 100% AMAZING! The food, the staff, and the history were perfect in every way! We ended up having a four-course meal. For starters, we had Raw Oysters topped with a Bloody Mary Granita. The second Course was Desposito's original recipe, crab soup, which I licked the bowl. I wanted more! For the third Course, we had pan-seared black grouper over tarragon cream pappardelle Pasta, and the best was saved for last! The fourth Course was a mini three-layer red velvet cake with a chocolate ganache! I loved every bite, and the wine paring was terrific! I can't recommend this place enough!

Yelp
We had a great experience here. We visited on a Saturday night expect a wait but it's worth it . We were delighted to find out they could make me a non alcoholic mock-tail. The egg rolls are a must my boyfriend is still raving about them. He enjoyed his shrimp scampi . I would pass on their mac n cheese and explore something else next time. They have an outdoor bar with live music which looked really nice . Parking can be a little tricky on weekends.

Yelp
Food was great, service amazing! We met friends for dinner and loved sitting on the outside patio! We had the low country shrimp boil, Oysters Rockerfeller and the crab egg rolls - delicious and filling. The only complaint was the corn was frozen not fresh. We will go back again.

Yelp
Ventured away drink Savannah to Tybee Island found this Restaurant. Nice place at the boat ramp. Service was fast and place is very clean. Ordered the Fish Dip Mahi and Halibut, with baguette it was DELICIOUS! I ordered the Shrimp Basket Broiled with Cajun Butter shrimp was a little over done and not deveined Please Devein your shrimp for your customers, my lady ordered the Shrimp Scampi she said it was good with a little bit of kick in the sauce. Overall it was good

Yelp
Awesome place nestled in a side street in Thunderbolt - staff is very helpful - space is new & looks awesome - went with fish sandwich w/ mac & enjoyed it tremendously

Beverly

Yelp
LOVED the hard to find "gluten free" She Crab soup stocked with crab!!! Will drive back from McDonough GA just for another bowl!!! Service was good!

Yelp
We had a wonderful and fun dining experience at Deposito's -excellent food, live music, and a friendly server. Drinks and food arrived quickly, and my shrimp salad was delicious and my husband really enjoyed is blackened fish entree. Our server was very attentive and provided great service. The live band was awesome, we had a great time and we will be back soon!

Yelp
What a neat little restaurant that's sorta off to the wayside on Thunderbolt Island, but worth the effort to find it. Great fish sandwich and my wife's shrimp topped salad was excellent, too. Great hushpuppies as an appetizer. Plenty of them with good honey/butter sauce. Extremely nice waitress, so polite. We'll be back, for sure!!!

Ken M.

Yelp
The shrimp were very good, large and lightly breaded. The coleslaw was not very good and we didn't eat it. They should go get Cracker Barrel recipe there coleslaw is the best. Both the service and ambience we're good
google avatar

Yelp
I hardly ever leave reviews unless I am thoroughly impressed. Was craving seafood but didn't feel like driving all the way to tybee for AJs so decided to give this place a try and I'm SO glad I did! The fried shrimp basket and hush puppies were so yummy and my husband liked his shrimp po boy. I feel like food + seafood is such a hit or miss in Savannah but this definitely stood out. We'll be back!

Linda O.

Yelp
The bartenders are extremly slow, they cost this business 100s a day due to guest sitting around waiting for the bartneder to pay attention or stop talking to each other. They drop the jiggers on the ground and do not sanitizer them after and use them on the next drink, being outside in the elements I am sure wildlife visit and walks around on the floor at night. The food has been decent each time we visit but it really takes a lot for us to stop by, because we know the service is going to be extermly slow and non attentive. If you have time to wait and do not care about customer service then this is your spot, the food is good just really bad service.

Yelp
The Fried Grouper Sandwich was recommended by one of the very friendly bartenders. "It's two fillets" is an understatement! Dagwood would be impressed. want a grouper sandwich and a huge fillet to take home for another meal? Order this sandwich. The standard bun was hardly noticeable with two monstrous fillets stacked in between. My reaction was "do I have to unhinge my jaw to take a bite"?! I immediately asked for a "to go box" and tried to squeeze one of the fillets into one. Impressive! Today, the rule seems to jack up price and shrink the portion. Desposito's does follow those sad trends, it's like going to grandmas and she got a whole fish and you and your friends are going to eat until you're stuffed! Just fine with this Cajun. The batter was fried crispy. The fillet was still very moist. Could have had a little less salt in the batter. Gotta watch my sodium intake with high blood pressure. But this sandwich took me back decades to spearing grouper on the Gulf coast and cooking it fresh. Wide smiles required to eat half of this sandwich! Check out the pics. Don't be fooled, those are platters, not plates! The whole restaurant is immaculate. There's plenty of tables inside and when you want that outside ambience, there's a huge bar area on the covered porch with clear retractable awnings to flick a switch and open for a fresh breeze. Tables are spaced around the bar so everyone has a view on the edge. You can even enter from the parking lot directly to this porch area. The bar is stone topped all around and has giant TV screens with sports. This rectangular bar in the back has live music on Wednesday. The acoustic group LAX is our favorite. Great open view of the harbor area. Put it on the weekly schedule!

Yelp
We ate outside at the bar at this unassuming local restaurant. The food isn't top notch, but the ambiance and staff and fun drinks are great. I would definitely come back here. The location is really nice, and it gets you away from the savannah tourist scene. I know if I lived in Savannah I'd be a regular at Despositos.

Johnnene G.

Yelp
Not bad. Fish was fried to perfection. Hush puppies were good also. Service was good. My guest said the chicken egg rolls were good.

Yelp
We just walked through the indoor dining area on the way to the outside area, so can't say a lot about it. Didn't look that large of an area but did look clean. The outside area was great. There is a huge bar with seats around it. Several large screen TVs and a lot of high top tables. Service was good. We went for lunch and arrived around 11:45. They open at 11:30 and when we arrived there were already several people there. By 12:30, it was getting full. The food was good. Our table had crab stew, Pirate Popcorn Shrimp (popcorn shrimp in a spicy sauce) and the Chile Lime Prawn Tacos. The crab stew was different than the normal cream based crab stew. It seemed more of a tomato base. It was very tasty with plenty of crab meat. The popcorn shrimp were not very spicy, but I'm sure that's a personal preference. For someone who doesn't like spicy, it would be acceptable. I would prefer them to have been spicier. The shrimp tacos were good. Nothing great about them, but they were enjoyable. All in all, it was a good experience and we will definitely be back!

Yelp
One of the best seafood restaurants on the Georgia coast, we have eaten here a half dozen times and every meal is spot on. Not sure where the negative reviews come from, probably bots, but this place is definitely worth trying out and seeing for yourself.
google avatar

Alex W.

Yelp
We were burned out on fancy restaurants and this was just what we needed to get back to simple, delicious comfort food. The crabby chips were an amazing appetizer. I'd rank the fried shrimp right up there with McKinney's Pond in Midville, GA and that's a really high honor. We finished with the key lime pie and it was sublime.

Yelp
Pluses -Beautiful venue. -outside area is very nice and is very park. -This is happening spot. -plenty of gluten-free and seafood-based carnivore options -The Fumé blanc white wine is a solid choice. - Bacon, wrapped shrimp are solid. -there were no bad smells, no bad seafood smells. Minuses -You get the crab legs for $37 but they don't have appropriate tools so that you can get all the crab meat out you have to take it home to finish eating it. -Margarita is terrible. -deviled crab does not come on a crab shell, but comes on a piece of metal shaped like a crab. -husband says the hush puppies were good but they did not come with the honey butter and we had to ask for it. -The margarita is terrible. It's pretty mixed and taste more like Mountain Dew or Mellow Yellow. -Service when sitting at the bar outside is a bit slow but to be fair they are very busy.

Yelp
A cute little restaurant off the main road. Nice, clean with a seaside feel to it. Attentive waitress. Not a huge menu but what they have is excellent. Amazing huge dessert portions. My husbands chocolate cake was the size of two servings at most restaurants. Great cheesecake and key lime pie also. Everyone at our table ordered a different dessert and got to sample each others with lots left over. Two people can easily share one dessert. The side orders of what I thought would be French fries turned out to be homemade potato chips. Very crispy with a great dipping sauce. It was a really great option from the usual plain French fries you always get elsewhere. We will definitely go back!
google avatar

Caleb D.

Yelp
Food was great, service was awesome! We got the po boy sandwiches with side salad, they were spot on. Kids got fried shrimp and they were very pleased as well!
google avatar

Ralph D.

Yelp
Better than expected. Great atmosphere and tasty food. Large portions also. Came here for restaurant week. Happy I did. Their fried "bang bang-ish" shrimp appetizer is delicious!
google avatar

Yelp
A wrong turn evolved into a great discovery when we found this restaurant! The service was fast, friendly and very helpful and the food was delicious. The shrimp tacos were some of the best we have ever had, and the cocktails were tasty too. We especially recommend the watermelon one! We will be back for sure.

Ian M.

Yelp
Soooo good. It was packed when we arrived, so we got a bottle of rose and sat out on the dock watching the sunset until our table was ready. The river was gorgeous. For dinner we had the grilled shrimp basket with old bay chips (homemade potato chips), the crab basket with fries, and the the smoked fish dip with baguette. The shrimp was some of the best we've ever had, came right off the boat that morning. The crab was delicious (but a bit hard to eat - worth the effort). Nothing but good things to say about the smoked fish dip, which was just Smokey enough and kind of like a whitefish salad. Our server Maggie was excellent and took great care of us. Note - this was the soft open, so they were out of a lot of menu items and the wait was a bit longer than usual, but everyone was so friendly it didn't matter. Fantastic place, would definitely come again.
google avatar

Kevin N.

Yelp
Ate there last weekend. The food was good. The service was just right. The noise level was over the top. We were in the patio area. It was surrounded by plastic screens so the temperature was comfortable. Voices were strained by the end of the meal just trying to hear each other.

Leo D P.

Yelp
Absolutely fantastic! Great place to relax and have Georgia style sit down meal! Definitely worth the money, and we'll worth the trip here!
google avatar

Olivia T.

Yelp
The place is very nice inside w a super nice outdoor area with lots of TV. The service was also fast and all workers were kind. However the food and drinks were not amazing and isn't anything like how it used to be. The watermelon cocktail wasn't the best. The crab legs were cold when they came out. We also got bay chips/ bacon wrapped shrimp which was just alright. I will rave about the macoroni though it was very creamy and the hush puppies / deviled crab were good!

Tiwanna J.

Yelp
Not impressed at all. Not what I expected. I had higher hopes because of the seafood but I would not recommend

Yvette W.

Yelp
Popcorn shrimp appetizer was very good. Pork chops was overcooked and dry. Coke/pepsi was good.

Danny C.

Yelp
Had an incredible experience. Calhoun was tremendous I recommend the oyster Rockefeller

Kenneth C.

Yelp
Amazing restaurant! Service, staff, and food are all incredible. The location is great! Good scenery, people, food, and vibes!

Bob F.

Yelp
A Hidden Treasure! We stumbled on getting fishing bait from across the street. Just the restaurant look just drew you in. The next day, my wife and brother/sister in law decided to check it out. Over all just a loss for words from a great selection of menu choices to the best waitress on the east coast. We mean everything we're saying, not paid or know no one. We just stumbled on not knowing or ever hearing. If you don't give it a try you won't know what you ever missed.

Robert G.

Yelp
Really poor meals two separate visits, more bar than restaurant...enjoy a drink at outdoor bar but DONT order the food.

Jennifer S.

Yelp
Ugh. If you can get past the parking mess and horrible selection of incompetent hostesses, the ambiance is nice and the wait staff is lovely. The food is the definition of meh. I'm sure there are some highlights if you sample enough dishes but what I've had so far is not enough to get me to come back. Bartenders were good, if you wait outside for a table, don't forget your bug spay, it gets nasty down there.
google avatar

Adriana T.

Yelp
2nd time to this restaurant and it didn't disappoint!! The atmosphere is great and so is the food! We will be back!
google avatar

Kelly H.

Yelp
Service was average and food a bit sub par. The tiny bacon wrapped shrimp dish was dry and tasteless!
google avatar

Bill R.

Yelp
What a great first visit! Super friendly, super fast, and delicious. Can't wait for the full menu to unfold. Great addition/revival to thunderbolt.

Jeremy S.

Yelp
Delicious lobster Mac and cheese, great view, good service and nice drinks. What more could you expect?

Gail A.

Yelp
Shrimp well prepared and timely Beverage prepared appropriately Staff pleasant and attentive. Environment appropriate for food service area. Comfortable and welcoming. Would recommend, and return again. The food items we ordered were tasty and presented nicely. We have recommended them to friends and have since returned and experienced the same level of service and product as before . 3.8 star rating for casual dining

Brandon K.

Yelp
Food was fresh and service was good, popcorn shrimp was a good one. Was also busy on a Monday. So should tell you something.
google avatar

Michael S.

Yelp
The staff are wonderful, the outside bar was very cool. The menu is limited and more for families with kids, I was expecting fish on the menu but went with the shrimp basket.

Brian S.

Yelp
Put our name on the list and headed to the fantastic outside bar where the bartenders quickly took and prepared our order of margaritas. After being called inside to be seated much faster then expected really enjoyed the Loaded "Old Bay" Crabby Chips appetizer, which was almost enough for a meal. Ordered some shrimp taco's and a Savannah traditional Deviled Crab both were well done and enough to have some to take home. Service both at the Bar and inside with the wait staff was fast, friendly and efficient. Quickly will become a "go to" for family dinners as it was very coastal in atmosphere.

Kymberly H.

Yelp
We went the second week so I am empathetic to restaurant roll out and soft opening. The smoked fish dip just ok, oysters not great and shrimp overcooked. I wanted to love this place because we are planning on making this our happy hour neighborhood spot. Beer prices were reasonable which was the best part. I wish they had thought about the placement of the beer taps which block the peek a boo view of the water when you sit on that of the bar. Bartenders not horribly attentive but acceptable. We'll give them a week and try again. It looks like the popcorn shrimp is the star of the menu.

Charles B.

Yelp
Over priced and small portions / service was bad and help had bad attitude. Also seen a FAT RAT come out kitchen area

donna m.

Yelp
I would give the atmosphere and building the highest rating. The food gets mixed reviews - some good things, some that need some work. Maggie was our server and she was the absolute best!! She was so pleasant and attentive - the best!
