"In 2013, Detroit Vegan Soul, which claims to be Detroit’s first all-vegan soul food restaurant, opened up on an empty block on Agnes Street in West Village. Four years later, co-owners Kirsten Ussery and Erika Boyd opened a second location in the Grandmont Rosedale neighborhood on Detroit’s westside." - Jena Brooker

"Detroit Vegan Soul is a magical place where vegans and carnivores can get together and at least agree on one thing: the hush puppies are amazing. Come here with someone who doesn’t believe tofu can taste good or your vegan friend who won’t have to ask for any substitutions for once. We’re partial to the sandwiches, like the BBQ tofu and veggie burger, but everything is good here and will likely be one of the healthier things you’ve eaten in a while." - Sara Barron, Sam Faye

This place is extremely busy. To get in without a long wait you have to go at off peak times. The restaurant does not have that many tables but there is also countertop seating. I had the fried catfish. It came with potatoes and a veggie mix. It was okay and the sauce was good. The thing I didn’t like about it was that it was very salty. My boyfriend had the breakfast type wrap. He really liked that. He also liked the mac and cheese. I never liked that style of mac and cheese but I think it was executed as it was intended. They seemed to have some tasty sounding desserts but I didn’t get to try one. I gave the place one more star than I think it should have because I think it’s so awesome to have vegan restaurants around Detroit.

I came here with a group of 4 back in late March. We had 2 Vegans and 2 Onmis. Everyone absolutely loved the food! The service was on point too! I can't wait for my next trip to Detroit so I can have this amazing food again.

Food was delicious. I got the Soul Platter. My first time eating collard greens. They were amazing. Sweet yams were good too. My wife got the tofu chicken with ranch wrap. She was very happy with her dish. The german chocolate cake was perfect. Not too sweet and not too rich. We ordered a second slice of cake to go. We'll be back soon. I want to try the catfish tofu dish next. Looking forward to it.

Yummy food. The corn muffins were very small and the portions were pretty small for the price. However, the food, service, and atmosphere were all good.

The catfish was very impressive. It had a great flavor. I really liked the peach cobbler. My son is a vegan and he loved the bacon wrap. The staff was supper.

It was amazing! If you like all the sides then the Soul Platter is for you. Wasn't expecting the seitan peppersteak to be served over rice. Probably wouldn't have ordered it because I had the rice with the Soul Platter (under the black eyed peas).

For someone who is not vegan, but want to take your mom out who is vegan, this was a wonderful choice. I enjoyed my meal and did not miss the meat. the string beans were delicious and fresh, the mashed potatoes were really good. My mom also enjoyed her meal. We agreed that we would be back to try some other dishes.

Had to do some business in Detroit. Coming in from Chicago. Whenever it's time to eat I look for a vegan spot specifically. My gf recommended this place. Funny thing is, she's never been here (yet)! The place is so good it was recommended by her friends that have been here. And they all live in California! Hey, word travels! 😉 I'm vegan and have tried MANY dishes and have been to several vegan restaurants. This place is primo! Saved on Google maps! Very nice facility. Wonderful warm atmosphere of soft caramel wooden chairs, style and tables surrounded and outlined with matcha green. Not too tight as far as seating but not overly abundant either. Wonderful staff. My waitress, Taylor, was on point when I asked for her recommendation. She was very warm and had nothing but smiles to give. Great service! I got the soul platter (which didn't take long at all to get; maybe because they're weren't that many patrons at the time) and I couldn't believe the taste. It was so on point! Beautifully seasoned with traditional spices in familiar for each dish. The Mac and cheese though could've been more gooey (still hunting for the perfect vegan mac-n-cheese HA). Other than that, the good would definitely satisfy the taste buds of even the most traditional of soul food eaters. And that "catfish" tofu with the tartar sauce was scrumptious! So much so, I ordered a catfish sandwich to go! Lol If you haven't been and can, visit! Get the platter and be happy in the satisfaction that you made the right decision. 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾 Oh and I got the peach cobbler for dessert. Yummy!
