The Best New Bars in Minneapolis and St. Paul | Eater Twin Cities

"Local heavy-hitter Daniel del Prado opened Dexter’s in August 2024, establishing a “refined sports bar.” Sure, the game is on the TVs and there are (fancy!) burgers on the menu, but it’s nothing like your standard sports bar. You’ll find only local craft beers on tap alongside bottles of local and domestic brews. There are three martinis that can be ordered individually or as an oh-so-trendy “Tiny ‘Tinis” flight (plus a separate espresso martini), and a few classic cocktails. There are Dexter’s-only drinks, too, which incorporate rarer ingredients like avocado pit orgeat, poblano liqueur, and hay botanical liqueurs. Dexter’s accepts reservations through Resy and also does takeout and delivery, for those who are just interested in food." - Natalia Mendez

I came here with colleagues for our burger club meeting. My expectations were more than exceeded. Everything on the menu seems to be exceptional. Their drink menu/tap list has several great options for any pallet. As my party dined bistro style we all got to sample a fair range of the menu. The burgers used ground wagyu beef. The French fries are tallow fried. Everything is high quality. I was surprised at how reasonable the prices were given the quality. Presently as of 2025 I think this may be the best burger restaurant in the metro.

A Fantastic Experience at Dexter's! I recently had enjoyed brunch at Dexter's and was thoroughly impressed! The welcoming atmosphere and great service immediately stood out. The elote burger was an absolute masterpiece; juicy, flavorful, and perfectly complemented by its unique, delicious toppings. Equally impressive was the Truffle mushroom burger a rich and decadent culinary creation with smashed wagyu, truffle mayo, and fontina. Both burgers truly showcased the great quality of ingredients. I highly recommend Dexter's to anyone seeking a truly great experience. I'm already looking forward to my next visit!

Been to Dexter's a few times now over the past month. The burgers are excellent, have tried 3 and the elote burger is a real standout. The beef tallow fries are fantastic. Every time we have been there the service has been excellent. A good spot for younger ones, my daughter (10) loves the kids options.

Bar none one of the nicest places I've been for, just a burger joint. Staff was very great, our sever was great. Parking not so much, but that won't stop me from going back. It's pricey but so good!

Food is fantastic right out of the gate at Dexter’s. We really enjoyed the green goddess salad which was bright and full of summery herbs that packed a lot of punch. Oysters and wings were tasty, but be sure you’re a cinnamon fan before diving in there — a little overwhelming after more than 2-3 wings. Fries are crispy and super flavorful, and we loved the onion burger and pastrami sandwich. Dessert was a surprising highlight — we’ll be back for the vanilla and peach in particular. It’s so so new, so we expected a few bumps, and it was the service and timing on plates and drinks. Confident it’ll be ironed out in a few weeks, so be gentle welcoming this new spot with a delicious and fairly priced menu.

The burgers are really good and the Tallow fried as well. Great selection of cocktails and beer. And the Coconut Cake is scrumptious. Can’t wait to go back during the summer to check out the outdoor patio seating.

We came for coffee and dessert, so I can't comment on the food menu. It was a sunny day on the patio, a nice leafy tree right in front, and the crowd were relaxed, and it was a perfect atmosphere. Our daughter is a connoisseur of Espresso Martinis, and hers was excellent, having a nice taste of mint, with a floral design in the creme, just showing a nice attention to detail. I had the tiramisu, which is a bit of cliched offering in grills, but this is the best example I've ever had. This Italian favorite had a nice touch of coffee on the soaked cake, and the mascarpone made so rich, a half would have been perfect, but I could not resist. My wife had a very dark gelato with hazelnuts, and the gelato was frantasic. Dexter's is named for a pug who belonged to the owner, passing away a few years ago. Our English creme was enjoying the patio, and there's a tradition of taking a polaroid of your dog, if you want, and mounting it on the board inside. A young staffer took a picture of our dog, who suddenly became camera shy; he had to retake it a few times. He, like our server and other staff we met were friendly, relaxed and happy to answer questions and make recommendations. I would guess that the rest of the menu would reflect the quality we found with our desserts and lattes. If you are in the neighborhood, do stop by: it is located on a pretty quiet residential street.

We were seated in a 2 person booth, but there wasn't a place to put our coats, so we asked to move to the bar. We started off with a tiny tinis flight each, pretty solid. The Bartender/Waitress was very informative throughout our whole stay. We ordered Cauliflower cacio e pepe, not what we expected, but pretty good we thought! We then both ordered burgers, a Dexter and a California, both were amazing! We also ordered a side of onion rings to split, the curry ketchup is phenomenal, they should bottle that stuff! We finished off, with a couple more beverages, and Coconut Cake Eater for dessert. Would go back just for a slice of that cake! So good! Overall, a very good experience, would reccomend and certainly go back!

Yelp
The trout roe was very unique and a table favorite. All of the burgers were great, but the Elote and Mushroom stood out. Staff was nice and vibe was really comfortable and fun

Yelp
For this being the new hot spot in Edina I was not disappointed. I was able to walk in and get a seat on the patio on a busy Thursday night. It was calmer outside but just the atmosphere I was looking for. Both drinks that I tried were delectable. The World's Best Espresso Martini was a classic with a slight twist, a touch of mint. La Flamenco was light and refreshing. Will definitely have both again! Unfortunately when we tried to order the Elote Burger, we were informed they were out of corn for the evening. This was disappointing but that means I'll be back to try it. Instead I opt'd for the fried pickles with ranch to start. The best way to describe these are pickle fries. They were crispy and a great starter. For an entree I went with the wedge salad. This salad was sooo good, and full of flavor. I loved the roasted tomatoes and the amount of dressing on the lettuce. The bacon is thick and there is an abundance of it. The menu has so many good options, I can't wait until my next visit.

Yelp
Visited 10/10/24. Go for the apps, and mayyybe nothing else. (Even then I would still hoof it across the street and hit up red cow, or even better drive to St Paul and go to Brunson's). Dexter's is another Daniel Del Prado creation-this time his take on a burger joint. While I do feel like it could cater decently to the Edina crowd, to me it felt somewhat soulless. A burger joint should be lively with screens, noise, and good ambiance. Dexter's had low candle lighting, tables packed together (literally felt like 6 inches away from the table next to us), and an air of pretentiousness that was kind of hard to shake throughout the meal. Pacing of the meal kind of disjointed and we both left disappointed as we had high hopes for this to be in our rotation of burger spots. To start off I got a cider while my sister got a beer (she ordered a pickle on the side like she always gets with coors and this was a slightly surprisingly difficult request, took quite a bit of convincing on our part). We also ordered the cacio e Pepe cauliflower and the fried pickles. These apps were definitely the shining stars of the night and if I end up re-visiting, I would definitely order especially the cauliflower again. For dinner I got the bacon burger while my sister got the chickpea burger. I'm going to be honest, if you are going to charge $16-17 for burgers it's a bit shocking that you aren't going to include a side of fries. My burger had a lot of flavor and I enjoyed it for the most part. I like never complain about too much flavor but I will say it's a very rich burger (I would be willing to skimp a bit on the patty if I was given a side of fries!). My sister's chickpea patty was dry and spicy and when she did ask for a side of ketchup it took about 8-10 minutes for it to come out. Sometimes with burgers the simpler, the better and this felt like clear evidence of that. Overall a lackluster experience and you could get a better burger and ambiance at a cheaper price at many different burger joints in the cities.

Yelp
I typically love the restaurants from the Del Prado restaurant portfolio so perhaps I had overly-hyped anticipation of my first visit to Dexter's. It has the vibe of a neighborhood gathering place with a prominent bar operation showing off big screen sports but also with a less masculine vibe which would appeal to a broader audience and not just sports fans. I like the look and feel of the place and felt like it would be somewhere I would be happy to visit often. It is loud and projects a vibrant, communal buzz in the internal dining area so don't expect this to be a cozy, romantic date night spot. The menu seems to be based off of bar food with many foodie driven inspirations. Burgers, sandwiches and the likes are scaled up by having things like oysters worked in and some basics like fried bologna or pastrami sandwiches appeal on paper to foodies by working in mortadella for standard Oscar Mayer and tongue instead of brisket. It sounds upgraded from typical bar food and has prices to match as the burgers and sandwiches start at $15 and go up from there. There is also a craft cocktail menu and the drinks were creative and quite likable but the pours were small for the price. I may have visited on an off night but the food was less memorable. It was not bad and I would eat it again but the price point for the portions served was about the only thing that wowed me. $15-19 gets you a lone sandwich on a plate with a lengthwise sliced half pickle. The size of the sandwiches were not gargantuan. Adding beef tallow cooked fries to your order adds another $11 so a basic burger and fries will run you close to $30 without drinks. It's not hard to see how a meal for 2 of sandwiches, fries and adult beverages will easily put you in the $100+ range for a tab. One thing that was flat out bad on my visit were the fried pickles. The cornmeal crust (not the pickle itself) was so salty as to make them inedible. I'm sure that was a mistake somehow and one that I might expect at a cheap chain franchise which this is not. (I did not alert them to this because our server was so enthusiastic about the food that comes out of this kitchen that I didn't want to disappoint her with bad news...but I should have.) The other items were fine but nothing over the top which makes me think that their price points are high considering that sandwiches hover close to $20 but come with no sides. To be fair, it has only been open for about 2 months on my visit so it may be that they are still working some things out in the kitchen which might explain the salt-lick pickles. And while I enjoyed visiting here to check it out, I found it to be rather expensive for such a casual experience. (Hint: Put something else on the plate besides the lonely sandwich and the limp half pickle. At least then I would feel like I'm getting something for the higher cost). Their pricing is what will keep this from being in my regular restaurant rotation.

Yelp
I always have high expectations for a Chef Del Prado restaurant, and Dexter's certainly did not disappoint. The bar is sturdy and expansive with plenty of indoor seating and a lovely outdoor patio. What used to be Agra Culture has transformed into a bright, welcoming space with plenty of natural light and a happy buzz with excellent service. We went on the Sunday of Labor Day and were pleasantly surprised to find two seats available at the bar around 6PM. Fried Pickles: I was ever so happy that these came in true "fry" form instead of circular medallions. While I do love a State Fair fried pickle, I appreciated the ratio of breading to pickle at Dexter's. The batter was extremely salty, which I just loved, and the dipping sauce was some sort of house made ranch with fresh herbs, very tasty. Elote Burger: of the eight burger offerings, the bar tender mentioned the Elote as her favorite, and I can't say no to anything with white American cheese, smash patties and a mayo based sauce. Two smash patties with great flavor, gooey American cheese, charred corn and a delicious chipotle mayo make up the guts. The cilantro was a welcome addition, I just wish the additional components had made it a touch more spicy, the jalapeño flavor didn't come through as much for me? Overall, really great new spot where it feels as if you can just pop in for a bite. Prices are quite reasonable and the TVs are not all over powering, so you can still feel engaged in conversation. Will be back to try more burgers and some of their smaller bites!

Yelp
I came here over their opening weekend, and was glad I got to try it! This is a new concept for Daniel Del Prado - more lowkey and chill than the usual upscale feel. Since I was there opening weekend, there were some hiccups with seating, but I think it'll iron out with time. One warning is this place isn't as large as I thought it would be - definitely try for a reservation. I also wouldn't recommend going with more than 4 people since the sizes of the shareables aren't too large. The service here was really wonderful, the ambiance was just a little odd. It feels a little torn between being a sports bar and a trendy spot to eat - there are giant TVs everywhere but it's decorated very minimalist/boho. I wouldn't quite come here to watch a game, but also wouldn't come for a celebration meal. Maybe a good date night spot, but it's very suburban in Edina. I feel like this would've been a good place to put near Target Center for pre-game bites. My friends and I split A LOT - my foodies wanted to try about everything! If you're a fall girl and an espresso martini girl - you need to try Dexter's. I had mine with Tequila and it was such a cozy/spicy martini - I fell in love! My friends also loved the martini flight and other cocktails. After splitting a bunch of apps, here are my thoughts: CAVIAR - Delicious, but served with the wrong type of fries. We ended up taking the waffle fries from the trout roe for this. You can't really get caviar on a shoe-string potato. TROUT ROE - MUST GET, like an upscale sour cream and onion dip. CAULIFLOWER - also highly recommend! Super rich. CHEESE CURDS - Skip, these aren't bad just very basic. For dinner we also split a few entrees: ELOTE BUGER - MUST GET, so flavorful, unique and delicious! FRIED CHICKEN SANDWICH - I didn't try this but my friends LOVED TUNA MELT - If you are a tuna salad girly like me, MUST - so delicious I still think about it. Finally, for dessert: CHOCOLATE HAZELNUT GELATO - So rich and flavorful, like eating frozen nutella CARROT CAKE - Delicious, lots of people recommended COCONUT CAKE - MUST GET if it's available, it was so fantastic we couldn't get enough of it! Overall, really liked the food and the prices here, just trying to figure out the right occasion to come!

Yelp
Our first experience at Dexter's was a few weeks after it opened. We had a reservation but managed to be seated 20 minutes early, which we appreciated. Overall the ambiance inside is like a slightly elevated sports bar. Tables are small and not super clean and there was a lack of menus to the point where drink menus were being passed amongst tables. We both started with the dirty vodka martini on the cocktail list and were both disappointed. Not nearly dirty or cold enough, and the herbal notes were a bit odd. So for our next drink we both ordered a classic dirty martini (extra dirty) and while it was slightly better without the herbal flavor, it again wasn't very dirty or cold. For a restaurant that makes its schtick martinis we found it strange that we couldn't get a good one. For food we started with cheese curds, which were good. We then split the beef tongue pastrami sandwich, Dexter burger, and a side of fries (which are a la carte). For the price of the sandwiches/burgers ranging from $15-26 you'd expect a side included rather than having to pay $11 for a side. The pastrami sandwich was incredible - 10/10 recommend and would get again. The burger was pretty good, the bun got soggy quickly though which was unfortunate and we never got the ketchup we asked for with it. Fries were good. For dessert we ordered the vanilla caviar gelato with olive oil and sea salt - absolutely delicious. We also both ordered espresso martinis at this point and it was honestly terrible. It had a menthol flavor that was very off putting - how hard is it to make a classic drink?? Overall I think there's room for improvement as they find their footing. Definitely a bit overpriced but could be mitigated by better drinks and atmosphere improvements. Given you're in Edina it's what you'd expect from a price perspective.

Yelp
all you MPLS foodies convinced me to finally make the trip to @dextersmpls and you were RIGHT. this elevated sports bar knows a thing or two about providing exceptional service & tasteful bites. the place was PACKED and being seated for our reservation took a little longer than anticipated, so in courteous fashion, the Dexter's team brought out complimentary glasses of wine & curds for our table. all of the apps were delicious, especially the oysters - just make sure to ask for some cocktail sauce on the side the drinks were fab - especially the espresso martini. without a single doubt, the mushroom burger won and was quickly devoured. the dessert was top notch, especially the coconut ice cream . we would happily reorder almost every item on the menu with the exception of the salad - the vinegar unfortunately overpowered. all-in-all, a delightful experience at Dexter's and I'm looking forward to return. the best (and maybe first?) Daniel del Prado bar-styled bites in town for a more than reasonable price and prime gameday seats to kickoff football season.

Yelp
Dexter's 10/10. I went there with a large group of girlfriends and we had the best time! The drinks came quick and were delicious, the staff was very knowledgeable, especially for one of my friend's who has a food allergy. Favorites are the mushroom burger, Caviar and Salmon Roe but let's be honest we pretty much ordered the whole menu and it was phenomenal!! Great vibe for large groups or next time would love to bring my boyfriend and just sit at the bar! Thank you Dexter's staff for a wonderful experience! Until next time!

Yelp
I'd rate the food/drinks at 3.5, but the service was great so that pushed my overall review up. We had the wings and cauliflower appetizers. I really liked the cauliflower--sort of an odd appetizer--but it was tasty, albeit expensive for what it is. The wings had good flavor, but they needed some heat to be memorable. My favorite part of the meal was our salad--great portion size and well done. The elote burger was just ok. I love a smash burger (Parlor is my favorite burger in town), but this was too dry to compete. Overall I like the vibes better than the Red Cow across the street, but not the food, and I think the prices are higher (and I don't think they have a HH).

Yelp
We went to Dexter's on their grand opening and had a great time!! All we heard about it was elevated bar food and it was that exactly. We both got cocktails $14 each and we thought the price was fair and they were well put together drinks. We ordered tallow fries, cinnamon rub wings (our biggest must get) and oysters. It took about 30 mins to come out which we thought was quick for s restaurant but they literally apologized to us and compted the wings because of the wait. We didn't even talk to our server about the wait and tbh anyone complaining about a 20-30 min wait in a PACKED restaurant isnt someone I want to dine with. I had the triple onion burger and it was spectacular!! Gelato was great too! Even though it was packed, the servers were so attentive and nice!! Great vibe as well, definitely giving an elegant bar, with a bunch of tvs. Would be an amazing to watch a game with a parent or girlfriend who maybe isnt into sports. We felt like it had something for everyone!! Clean and nice bathrooms. Great bar, yummy food, amazing service and good prices!! 10/10 will come back soon!

Lisa M.

Yelp
Waited 20 minutes past our reservation time for a table, while they seated other tables of the same size that came in after us. We were told "our" table wasn't ready yet, as though they couldn't seat us at any other table for 4. We were finally seated, right by hall with the dishwashing station and so spent the night shouting over clanking noise from the kitchen. Host was not only unapologetic, he was downright rude when we complained about the wait and lousy table. Nobody cleared our app dishes. When our burgers came out they just put the new dishes beside the dirty app plates, which we ended up stacking in the middle of the table. Food was good but there are other places in the area for burgers & similar vibe and more welcoming service. Daniel del Prado may be spreading himself too thin at this point.

Yelp
The restaurant is described as an upscale sports bar but really it's a good restaurant with TV's. They have a great outdoor patio and roomy indoor seating. The acoustics aren't great and it can get really loud. We shared the trout roe and potato waffles. That is a must order item. It was so good. I would love to see it as a wedding appetizer! I had a glass of the Rose and it was perfect. My friend had the seafood roll. Warning she said it was very spicy with too many peppers. She liked it and she likes spicy but said it was a lot. I had the lamb burger which is my go to when it's on the menu. It was very very good. I wish fries were with it but you need to order those separately. They looked great! We shared the coconut cake. My one bite turned into sharing half the cake. It was one of the best and served cold just like I like it! I wish they opened a second location in the Mill District. It's what we need! Shout out to our fabulous server Eve B! She was delightful.

Yelp
First time at Dexters and definitely won't be my last! Great food, great environment, great service. What else can you ask for. Trout Roe was fantastic and not too fishy and the dry rub wings for phenomenal. I went with the Elote burger and it was cooked perfectly and with great flavor. 10/10

Yelp
Food was great and a nice notch up on bar food with a twist. Drinks were great and service really was excellent. Our server raquel was quick, professional and knowledgable. The mushroom burger and trout roe were two stand outs for us.
