10 NYC Restaurant Openings to Know This Summer

"Co-founder and Creative Director Samantha Wasser, of by CHLOE. and The Sosta, opened this fast-casual eatery late last month in partnership with chef and Top Chef Canada host Eden Grinshpan. The broadly Middle Eastern menu (featuring salads, pitas, bowls and mezes recommended with freshly-baked flatbreads) offers Instagram-worthy versions of your favorite street cart food. Dishes include beet hummus bowls with crispy eggplant, and sumac fattoush with basil, mint, baby kale, Persian cucumbers, fennel, and watermelon radish in a honey lemon sumac vinaigrette. Specialty items include halva toast, honey rose pancakes and orange blossom yogurt. For those with food allergies, the menu includes a detailed, nut-specific allergen key." - Marguerite Imbert

Dez - Review - Nolita - New York - The Infatuation

"If you want a fairly healthy lunch option in Soho and want to branch out from Taim and Sweetgreen, you could try Dez. It’s a fast casual Middle Eastern spot from the people behind By Chloe with a bright, desert-themed space and some nice sidewalk seating out front. They serve mezes like beet hummus as well as pitas and bowls, like the one with chicken and saffron rice. Everything here is pretty good, especially the starters and breads, but the prices feel pretty high given the small portions." - Matt Tervooren

I love Mediterranean and middle eastern food. I love za’atar and tahini on anything. This place was on my list of must visits for a long time. Atmosphere: the music is perfectly uptempo and upbeat. Not too loud. Great song selection, classic rock and some modern hits. The vibe is more timeless than modern. The interior is gorgeous. Has a desert vibe. The bathroom is gorgeous. The restaurant is so spacious. Not too crowded. It’s cozy, comfortable, casual. I ate here alone next to a family with a baby who wanted a low key dinner. Service: Madeline at the counter was so lovely and helpful. It’s my first time and she helped me understand what was in everything. I live the happy hour special, I wouldn’t have known if she didn’t tell me! So grateful for her. I got a few mezze which let me taste different things on the menu. The za’atar....is so good but my only complaint is I want more - as in I want 1 liter of za’atar and tiny pita. :) the staff was so friendly and accommodating. They were patient with me. Food: I got the eggplant (baba ganoush) and cauliflower and a za’atar. I didn’t want to over flow myself on my first visit. The portions are great and the prices are great. I was full off 2 mezzes and the pita. The bowl looked amazing but I was worried I’d get stuffed. So happy the drinks are unique and not just Coca Cola and Pepsi. They have fresh fruit and cookies for anyone who needs dessert. Seems this restaurant attracts patrons who love seasoned foods. The people next to me were all excited to be here, like it was on a bucket list. The creators of this restaurant definitely thought about many things carefully. This is now my new favorite place in Soho.

Top notch food set in a quirky but classy atmosphere. We tried 5-6 dishes and not one disappointed. The flavours all blended well together and no dish was so overpowering that it drowned out the rest. Both the vegetarian and meat options were great and made with the same care and quality. Plenty of people clearly use this as a bit of a lunch-n-work spot. 100% worth a visit - in fact it's worth multiple visits.

If I lived closer I'd be here every day. I had the eggplant app and the fatoush salad and they had nice complex flavors. I cook a lot of middle eastern food so I know they've done their homework. Well done on decor and price point. Can I give it 6 stars? Cant wait to come back!

This is an easy 5 stars review. Everything was on point, the space, vibe, decoration, staff, food presentation and taste. I ordered the breakfast pita: The portion was big, pita was freshly baked, the salad had a perfect mix of olive oil and lemon. I also loved the egg with a hint of sumac on top. Be sure to check the restroom. I wish they open a branch in Chicago

So I passed by DEZ a few weeks ago and it was so cute inside that I made it my mission to try it out one day. I decided that today would be that day and what a horrible decision I made. I was super excited to eat the Jeweled Rice as I looked at the menu before hand and it sounded delicious. So I ordered and my friend who was with me ordered the same item and she got hers first. She came back to the table and the first thing she asked was “Where is the rest of it ?”. Then I was called, the server was really nice and complimented my name which I appreciated. Glancing at my order, I realized it was the same at my friend’s. Small. But I was still hopeful. When I got back to the table, the last bit of hope I had disappeared with the first forkful of rice. It was hard and stuck together in chunks. The rice you scrape off the bottom of the pot when you slightly burn your food after forgetting it’s on the stove. It was disgusting. I got three measly pieces of chicken. It smelled good but the taste was bland. So at this point: it’s expensive ($12), small, doesn’t taste good at all. I had my portion and the chicken from my friends. At the end, I left more hungry than when I went in. So in short (for the people who will skip to the end of this review) it’s: expensive, small portions, and distasteful. I read that it was founded by the co-owner of byChole, honestly just go there instead of DEZ. I will never return to DEZ.

Located in the NYC, is DEZ. Short for desert. It is a fast casual middle eastern restaurant with a delicious menu and a gorgeous atmosphere. The ambience is great and the lighting is lit😄 The customer service is fantastic and though the restaurant is new they cater to each and every individual to the best of their capabilities. This restaurant is fitting for families, with or without children, Couples both young and old, Or even for a quick lunch or food to go. ___ Transportation. •Heading to dez from queens, taking the J from the jamaica train station and get you there via bowery station and a short 5 minutes walk. •Also from uptown Bronx, you could take the Downtown 6 train and get to the restaurant via spring street and a little 3 minutes walk. •Other train options are the B or the D. And you could also uber to avoid all the train ride. _____ Be sure to Visit and have fun!! And don't forget have a Cookie. From your local guide, shantel.

This place is super cute! Love the decor and how clean it is. Food was delicious and service was great. My husband and I tried the eggplant and cauliflower mezzes and Moroccan lamb meatball bowl! YUM. Our friends loved what they ordered too! Looking forward to popping in again soon and tasting more of their menu.
