Decade-Old Chophouse the Classics Is Closing February 27 - Eater DC

"DUPONT CIRCLE—DGS, the Jewish deli co-founded by local restaurateurs Nick and David Wiseman (Whaley’s, Hill Prince), closed on February 11. The five-year-old restaurant grew to have a second location in Mosaic District (closed last winter), and also served as an incubator for underground hummus shop — and soon to be autonomous eatery — Little Sesame." - Warren Rojas

Dupont’s DGS Delicatessen Is Closing February 11 - Eater DC

"DGS Delicatessen, the upscale Jewish deli known for its smoked salmon and pastrami-topped French fries, is closing on February 11. The deli, which opened in late 2012 and once had a second location in Mosaic District, has been a staple in the area for several years. Co-owners Nick and David Wiseman express gratitude to their customers and leave open the possibility of reopening in the future." - Warren Rojas

Nice new clean interior. Pleasant server. Food took awhile to come out. The actual deli sandwich menu isn’t available until 11am so don’t go here looking for a sandwich in the morning (like I did). Got the eggs Benedict instead, it was good, but portions tiny especially considering the price. Poached eggs were sadly overdone, not creamy center I was hoping for. The latkes were also kinda dark. Smoked salmon was tasty though. There is a sign inside the restaurant that says “save the deli”... I think they need to work on a few things for that to come to fruition.

Clean, friendly, comfortable laid-back atmosphere that's not noisy (good for conversation). Had Challah French Toast and it was crispy yet soft. Just the right amount of berries, jam, and a dab of sour cream. Great balance without covering flavor of bread. I thought portion looked slightly modest at first but I felt satisfied by the end so it was just right.

Delicious food that was very fancy and great for dinner. The happy hour specials on the house wine was amazing and even though we didn't have a reservation, they were able to almost immediately seat us. They were also able to transfer our bar tab over to our table, which was an added bonus.

My Son and I went there for breakfast. We ordered two bagels. One was right and the other wrong. I had to go find a waiter to discuss it. I ordered a bagel to go for my sick spouse. Got home and it was wrong too. Also, the greeter at the door was in a foul mood. Must have had a rough night. Not welcoming at all! For the Management- it was Sunday morning 9/3 around 8:30.

I have to say, I was disappointed by DGS. I've been twice, and both times the service (by management, not the servers) left a bad taste in my mouth. Food is decent, though not life-altering. Portions are ridiculously small, especially for the price point. Staples are bland and boring; neat menu twists are poorly executed. Nearly everything is over salted. I have yet to meet someone who was impressed. They can definitely do better.

The hostess today was not exceptionally friendly and did not even crack a smile. Unfortunate. I ordered the Andrea sandwich to go. The sandwich itself wasn't bad, but the bread should have been toasted or toasted more. I requested the coleslaw on the side instead of on the sandwich. It lacked a tremendous amount of flavor and freshness. For $15.00, I doubt, I'll rush back within the month. However, I will give it another try by possibly dining in at a later date.

Went in for a sandwich to go around 2:00. Was told to place my order at the bar in the back where, once the bartender had finished a personal conversation with the only other patron, I was eventually acknowledged. Struck by the very disinterested attitude of several (but not all) staff. Discovered when I got home, the order was completely wrong, not very good, and for which I was charged a higher amount. Went to the DGS website to complain but it does not include an email unless you want to schedule an event. Doubt a phone call would get to the appropriate person.

DGS is good, but don't expect it to be the same as a classic New York/Jewish deli experience. The pastrami sandwich was delicious and the meat was perfectly melt-in-your-mouth. However, the sandwich was on the smaller side (unlike the overflowing sandwiches you get in NY). We tried a potato knish to start, which was pretty good. The service was very good and our food came out very quickly after ordering. Most importantly: the pickles were delicious and sour, just the way they should be! If you can allow yourself not to compare DGS to a traditional NY deli too strongly you'll have a great time.
