Where to Find Wildly Tasty Game Burgers in Portland | Eater Portland

"There is no shortage of game burger options at this Paleo-centric diner. Venison and boar appear among the laundry list of potential proteins available on its BYO Burger; diners can choose from assortment of cheeses — think: blue, cheddar, goat, Swiss — and add toppings like grilled onions, kimchi, or pineapple. Those who would prefer to leave the burger design to the professionals can opt for a venison burger with grilled mushrooms and goat cheese, or a wild boar burger with shoyu-marinated pineapple and pepper jack cheese. Dick’s is open for takeout and delivery."

Where to Find Bowls of Captivating Chili in Portland and Beyond | Eater Portland

"Richard Satnick founded local chain Dick’s Primal Burger to provide accessible paleo meals using Oregon-raised beef and Portland-made ingredients. The chili is made with big chunks of 100-percent grass-fed beef and organic red beans from Idaho. It has a kick to it, but the primary favors come from the beef itself and a blend of spices like cumin and smoked paprika. The chili is a bit thinner, more soup-like, but the spices, red beans, and the chunks of beef make for a filling meal. Dick’s is open for indoor and outdoor seating as well as for takeout and delivery."

I had the gluten-free chicken and waffles and it was delicious. It didn't taste gf at all. My daughter had the goat cheese, mushroom scramble and she sad hers was delicious, too. The prices were reasonable, the quality was great, and the staff was awesome. My daughter said it was one of the best breakfasts she has had in Portland. They also have a room you can rent for free (just no outside food or beverage). The restaurant can accommodate a wheelchair, they have gluten-free and vegan options, and they source locally. Highly recommend. We were there 4/12/25 at 10-10:30 am.

Google
Honestly one of the best things about Dick’s is that they are dog friendly. They are even welcomed allowed inside! Any burger can be substituted with a Beyond Burger patty. Interestingly this is the only place I’ve ever been asked how I wanted my veggie patty prepared, aka medium or well done. 🍔😋

Google
We’ve dined in many times because we love how kid friendly the restaurant is. Unfortunately our dine out experience is almost always negative, consistently having missing meals and we have to officially stop ordering as yesterday our kid’s hot dog we discovered was moldy.

Google
Excellent food! My wife got a gluten free/dairy free burger which tasted like “the real thing” and I got a normal burger. Fries were crispy and salted to perfection. We also tried the parfait (bar form now) and salted Carmel shake. The desserts weren’t amazing, but the rest of the food was top notch. We went at 11:45am on a Thursday. Definitely will come back!

Edit: Just want to clarify, I think that actually now that I think about it, it was smaller than a child hamburger . Also, I would like add. It appears that the business doesn’t really have a firm grasp on what customer service is ? see the comment from the business below. They literally have the smallest burgers in town. They closed the one of Alberta because it sucked sooooo bad . I tried the original one in Woodstock and was just as disappointing. So many good burger places to choose from just skip this one. So many other hard working places that deserve the money , go there! This place is not worth the money and seems if you say anything about you real life experience , they’ll try to gaslight you in a Google review. What a bunch of chumps ! Needless to say I won’t be back ! Laugh worthy portion, definitely not worth the money. It was like a child’s hamburger that you get on an airplane.

Google
Used to love coming here, but the last visit they did not pay attention to the ordering notes and as a celiac, got me extremely sick. Precautions were previously taken here and this was once my favorite place to eat, but quality has gone downhill. Unfortunately won't be returning.

Google
Absolutely amazing food! The burger was awesome the fries were on point. The chicken tenders were a little over cooked but lots of variety for gluten free options. The Marionberry lemonade is on point! I will definitely be back. Delicious food and great service! They even have an outdoor eating area.

Google
For the price the quality of food and service is not worth. The hamburgers are abnormally small, the buns looked like 5 ppl pressed their fingers into it, the top bun was stale the bottom bun was soggy, and don't get me started on the kids hotdogs which game playing with no condiments and had a funny propane taste like it was cooked on a gas grill. Definitely wouldn't recommend and for the price I'd rather have Red Robin

Yelp
As a parent to a kid with a few food allergies, Dick's is one of the few restaurants in our regular rotation. We just really appreciate the care and consideration they put into making sure there is no cross contamination or issues. It can be a mixed bag when asking about allergens, but the staff at Dick's have always been absolutely great about it. The food is good (I really like their fries) and the peace of mind is great. I'd recommend Dick's to anyone, but ESPECIALLY for families or people with food allergies.

Aubrie R.

Yelp
Whoa Nellie I just had one of the best burgers of my life AND took an order to go in a bag that read "Aubrie's Bag of Dicks" so I can scratch that one off my to-do list! But for reals. The young guy at the counter could not have possibly been nicer to us, the place was clean and the food came out not so quickly that you worry it was just warmed up, but not so long that you worry that they are slaughtering in the back. Just perfect! Beets! Yummy fries! Vegan milkshake! DUDE I am so full and happy! Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
How can you resist a beautifully cooked, house made burger? And if you get it to go they deliver to you a bag of dicks.
google avatar

Kary W.

Yelp
Delicious food so tasty!! Jason provided stellar service, and it was a quiet environment. Plenty of room for a bigger party, and a menu you can easily find something not processed and yummy ! They serve both alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages. Check it out!!

Yelp
I feel really ripped off. I paid 14$ for a burger alone, and to get fries was 6 dollars separate which is just insane. I thought a 14$ burger must be legit though so I gave it a shot. After I ordered I realized they never asked how I wanted it cooked. They served me a TINY burger the size of my palm and the patty was extra well done, not how I would have wanted it at all. The burger was ok but totally not worth 14$ and I was hungry again in a few hours. I cant imagine how they stay in business for that price they should serve an adult size burger and throw in some fries.
google avatar

Abigail C.

Yelp
Another terrific couple of burgers were had by us! Love this place & so happy they are in our neighborhood.
google avatar

Tawni B.

Yelp
Solid service. Delicious burger/chicken sandwich. Our roommate had ordered from dicks before but we've never had it so we made a trip of it. Poutine was a tad salty and thin but 10/10 will be back.

Hypmatizarism G.

Yelp
Excellent Service and a filling meal for $18 The large fry was pleasantly seasoned, and largely portioned!! The BYOB was filling. It could use a bit more flavor, but for $10? Not bad at all.

Steven B.

Yelp
These are a few of my favorite things & dicks gets it done. The food was nutritious and the presentation 'awesome.' Occasional customer when passing thru neighborhood. Felt welcomed as always & they were very patient in re-explaining menu. So service was great in addition to being disability welcomed. Family & solo friendly rain or shine! Thanks

Yelp
Excellent vibe, great food, and great service. Lots of options for various dietary regimens, including vegan, vegetarian, keto, low-carb, and anything in between. I particularly like the low-carb/keto options here, and I've never been disappointed. They also have a selection of hot tea, adult beverages, and will customize just about anything you can imagine. I also love that they source things locally and do what they can to support other vendors in the community.
google avatar

Casey R.

Yelp
The food is pretty good, and there are great bowl options for the burger-averse. Best part? A while empty room with a tv and tables you can reserve FOR FREE. We host our D&D nights there!
google avatar

Ann R B.

Yelp
A welcoming atmosphere. The burgers are made only of grass fed beef, unless you want vegetarian versions, and they have good non meat options as well. Their fries are hand, cut and fried in a wonderful oil. The end result is that the fries are tasty, crispy, and somehow not at all oily or greasy! I had a burger and, for a change, it was not overcooked. Somehow it seems that most local restaurants cook all of the juices and taste out of them; not so here. Check them out, if you can. Delicious. I'm telling my friends and am planning to go back.

Yelp
Just went for the first time this week, it was really good! I had a turkey burger, I like the option to have something other than beef sometimes. Another person had a burger and anoTHER had the BLAT. Everything was fresh, the employees were really nice glad we went!
google avatar

Joel D.

Yelp
First time in. The staff was friendly and helpful. I ordered the Hunt and Gather, fries and a beer. The fries came out just a few minutes after I sat down. They were rustic, seasoned and were even a little crispy - very good. A few minutes later the burger arrived. The venison patty was cooked to medium well, the mushrooms had been sautéed down for a good umami hit and the goat cheese added a creamy tangy compliment. The accompanying lettuce, tomato and pickles were all very fresh. All said - an awesome burger!
google avatar

Marmota G.

Yelp
Excellent service and food! We will definitely be back. Everything we tried was prepared perfectly.!

Yelp
I had a pretty gross meal here last night. I got fries, a burger and a milkshake. The fries were so salted they were inedible, it was like they spilled salt on them. The milkshake was very watery and came out in a glass hot to the touch. I got crispy onions on my burger and they were overly battered, really hard lumps that didn't even taste like onion. I don't know if it was an off night or what, but I won't be coming back. Very pricey for what I got, I left wishing I had just gone to McDonald's.
google avatar

Kennan C.

Yelp
Food was great. A little expensive but damn good. The service was quick and polite. Worth stopping in.

Yelp
I'm surprised at the mediocre reviews here. No, the burgers are not fast food cheap, so I suppose the setting inside doesn't exactly "fit" the gourmet burgers or price, but I'm not one to care much about that. What I do care about is the food. The burger was one of the best burgers I've had in a very long time! Perfectly cooked, topped with caramelized onions, balsamic reduction and goat cheese (I subbed that for the bleu cheese), this burger was literally finger-licking good. The fries were also amazing and the dip options were great! You can go with the typical stuff, but also a chipotle or garlic aioli. I would definitely get a burger here again!

Tony S.

Yelp
I've frequented Primal for 4 years or more and am happy to tell who sees this that the good here is as good as it has ever been to my knowledge. Try the build a bowl! Here is my personal build a bowl ingredient list: Double steamed broccoli Fried pulled pork Cheddar cheese Pepper jack cheese Crispy onions Hazelnuts Sunflower seeds Avocado with ranch.

Yelp
Kombucha was amazing!!! Burgers were alright. I am myself like a thinner French fry. FYI I am a huge foodie, so very critical...
google avatar

Khang N.

Yelp
Been wanting to try this place for awhile but the wife doesn't for some odd reason but finally got a chance to sneak out and get it and it is amazing!! I got the BYOB (build your own burger) with the Beyond Meat and a lot of extra added goodies and oh my my it was delicious! Like up there with some of the best I've had. Wasn't completed sold on the fries and chipotle aioli but the doggo gave them a 10/10. I am definitely going here again and looking forward to trying to different burger options they got! Give them a try! Fr fr

Yelp
Dicks Primal burger is my favorite burger and fries in PDX. It's super delicious and made with high-quality local ingredients. All the burgers are 100% grass fed (less fat / less calories / more omega 3 / more vitamin A, E, B12.) Feel good cows raised on grass do not eat GMO "toxic" grains or grains grown with fertilizers and pesticides. Sorry for the rant. I digress. I get off my soapbox! Give me that grass fed "healthier" burger! Fact: Grass fed beef is leaner than industrial raised chickens. Fries are hand cut, air baked, not greasy with the skins on and served piping hot every time. Delish with housemade dipping sauces! I had the Rubenesque with housemade fermented kraut, swiss cheese, thousand Island dressing and pickles on a potato bun. The bun is so fresh. It's a two-handed burger! Grip it! Don't squeeze it or the juice will squirt you! It's a feast! Lots of in or outdoor seating!

Dominic B.

Yelp
This place is literally a joke. Ordered take out. Way overpriced. Fries sold separately. The staff treated me like garbage. The bag, literally, not even kidding, had a name tag on it that said "_______'s bag of dicks". Haha very funny or it would be if I wasn't supposed to trust that the contents of the bag are safe to eat. As if that wasn't enough to indicate that I shouldn't trust the place to provide edible food, which they didn't, the food took extra time to come out and then it was somehow limp and soggy anyways. The burger was elk meat. Kinda just tasted like low quality frozen beef, somehow super rubbery yet not cooked medium, it was bloody. Burgers are traditionally cooked medium and nobody asked me if it was ok with eating rare/raw ground elk meat. More importantly, there was some kind of rock hard substance in literally every bite of the burger, either bones or plastic. I have a pretty high tolerance for chewing on things and I might actually need dental work after eating this. Again it was not just one bite it was throughout the whole burger, I had to spit out little bits of whatever it was 5 times. They obviously don't aim to please and thats something you will notice right off the bat. I honestly feel very dumb for eating here. I guess we don't do smart things when we're hungry. Seems like their patrons just come here to get drunk so if that's your thing maybe just avoid the "burgers"
google avatar

Dan R.

Yelp
Didn't remember being here 7 years ago. Had the elk burger with goat cheese and caramelized mushrooms, very tasty. Mike and Abby are big fans of their beef burgers. I like that the menu has a fair amount of options, including build your own. Decent tap selection. very friendly service.
google avatar

Finn W.

Yelp
One of the best burgers I've ever had. The fries are scrumptious and the chipotle aioli is mind-boggling. The have a ton of framed pictures of people named dick on the wall which I think is kinda funny and cool. All the employees there are really nice. The ambiance is great. Btw they have vegan, vegetarian and paleo options so anyone can go.
google avatar

Jenn S.

Yelp
Great customer service! My kiddo accidentally spilled his milkshake everywhere, and they were so gracious and helpful. Very family friendly. Food was great too. Thank you!

Paula F.

Yelp
All the food at Dick's Primal Burger is great quality. For example, the beef is grass fed, and the cheese is Tillamook cheese which was recently rated among the best in the US. Ingredients are local. The staff is friendly and helpful. There's a great, wide variety of drinks. There is something for everyone on the menu, even if you're gluten-free.
google avatar

Yelp
I came in with a large group for my birthday recently and they were very kind, accommodating, patient, and friendly. The food was wonderful and the service even more so! It is a great place to return to for sure!

Yelp
I have been here four times now, so I've given it a chance because it's one of the few places I can eat. Every time I have been disappointed. The food is not well prepared and doesn't taste good. They do really well is the margarita. The service has never been good. One day I went with my son, and he got his food and I waited 20 minutes for my drink, and then my food came. The last time I went (3 days ago), I ordered a bowl with chicken. There was about a quarter inch of watery liquid at the bottom. Have they not heard about slotted spoons? The chicken tasted like cardboard. Like it had been flattened, grilled, and frozen for 12 months, thawed, warmed, and served. I don't know what they're doing. Instead of masquerading as a restaurant who cares about offering salads and bowls, they should just focus on their burgers. Every time we ordered fries, they were not hot and were limp, tough, and chewy. I think they need to go back to the drawing board with their ingredients, their flavorings, and their preparation. As for ambience, it's cold, cold, cold. I had to wear my hoodie and my winter jacket and give my knitted cap to my husband and put my hood up. So unpleasant. Oh, and the vegan shake was room temperature and we just left it.
google avatar

Sarah G.

Yelp
Fun allergy friendly eatery. We loved the huge interesting outdoor patio area. Tried a delectable venison burger with the best GF bun. The sweet potato fries were excellent and my husband loved all the burger topping choices and the tasty homemade with care factor.
google avatar

Damien M.

Yelp
One of our favorite places in town to get a grass fed burger! Have been going here for years! If you're looking for a place to get awesome burgers and fries, as well as delicious salads, GF chicken nuggets and sandwiches, plus plenty of other awesome menu options, Dick's Primal Burger is for you. Typically great service. Some may feel the prices are a little high. But you get what you pay for and this is great quality food! Nice indoor and outdoor seating too. Great place!

Daniel F.

Yelp
The French fries were meh. The chocolate shake and burger were ok. What wasn't ok was the price for the bland and basic.
google avatar

Todd F.

Yelp
This place was recommended to me and upon reviewing their site I was excited to try; Grass Fed Beef and healthier ingredients all-around. Candidly, I am super disappointed! I love burgers and being new to Portland, I was hoping to find a go-to place for a GREAT one. IMO, this isn't the place. The patty was puck-like, similar to a frozen pack you'd buy from Costco, way undercooked (my wife's too) and frankly, it didn't taste great! We didn't think the fries were great either.
google avatar

Jennifer L.

Yelp
I've been here several times for both dine in and takeaway and had the same experience either way. Personally, I've never had a bad burger here. They have good standard burgers and get some really interesting specials going sometimes too. I like the option of sweet potato fries because otherwise I wouldn't order just regular fries for me. Our food has always been fresh and tasty. We also have never had an issue with our order. We come here when we feel like a nearby burger, but don't want just fast food. The owner and staff are always very pleasant and the place is clean. I think it's a good option in the area for sure.

Deb T.

Yelp
Ate there after the Arts festival in Lake Oswego. Great food, good beer selections, wine list, and several cocktails. It doesn't ; look like much but I would call it hidden gem. We had Cobb salads and a BLAT, with an order of fries. All were rated by us as wonderful. I wish we had one in Boise. Would love to try their burgers. They look great.

Marshall E.

Yelp
Wow. What an amazing place. Choose your patty: Beef? Salmon? Turkey? Impossible? And others Type of bun: GF or Regular? Cheese: Many Toppings: So many to select from Drinks galore! Outdoor seating! I had the Turkey burger, regular bun with Swiss cheese, picketed peppers and onions and Fries. I was so stuffed after lunch that I only had a salad for dinner. Given the vegan options, I'm taking my wife with me next time.

Yelp
Two and a half stars. Our group ordered several burgers -- the Brokeback (bacon, chedder cheese, house-made BBQ sauce), the Umani (grilled onions, balsamic reduction, blue cheese), Patty Melt (Swiss cheese, grilled onions, garlic aoli), and the vegan Mondo (grilled onions, vegan cheddar), along with a couple of orders of the sweet-potato fries. Though we asked that the burgers be cooked to medium, all were overdone. My friend who ordered the Umami said it had no real pop and couldn't tell it was made with blue cheese. My Brokeback burger had only the slighest smear of BBQ sauce. The others (the pair eating the Patty Melts and the vegan with the Mondo) said their meals were OK but nothing worth going out of their way for, and all of us agreed that the sweet-potato fries were a real let-down. They were limp and soggy and stuck together in clumps. Likely we'll not be back.

Yelp
I'm right on target, says Armatrading So you're hungry, I say what of it? Farms can change, humanely raising  I want to try some free-ranging, I say Dick's the Primal, try Superfood  Dick's the Bison, smell Garlic Aioli  Dick's the Venison, I'm the Tempeh Titan  Don't use your army to fight a losing battle Animal, mineral, physical, spiritual I'm the Burger you need, I'm the Burger you need

Yelp
First time eating here and absolutely disappointed. Fry's taste like vinegar. I sat and watched the cook touch his head and not wash his hands as he was working with ready to eat food. I watched him touch raw beef and didn't see him wash his hands after. Idk about you guys but to me that's a big NO NO so I want be returning and do not recommend this business.

Molly L.

Yelp
We ordered the Umami burger, Brokeback burger, Notorious PIG burger, fries, Caesar salad, sodas and a milkshake. The guy that took our order was friendly and helpful. He came and checked on us and asked if we wanted soda refills. Everyone enjoyed their burgers. I had the Notorious PIG which was a boar patty with pimento cheese and crispy onions. It was very tasty and not a combo normally seen at burger joints. The fries were good and came with dipping sauces. The Caesar salad was okay. There is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. We will definitely return to Primal Burger.

Quincy D.

Yelp
The venison burgers were fire Outdoor seating was nice. Staff was cool. Overall, it was a good experience and we will be going back.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a great burger place for people who eat clean or have food allergies. The meat is delicious! The owner was super friendly and everything was pretty quick too. Get the sweet potato fries!!!! We will be back when going through Portland!

Georgie K.

Yelp
Update: Sorry to owner for saying tofu and not tempeh. I was trying to go easy. The TEMPEH burger was still awful. We eat tempeh too. My husband is a strick vegetarian. Our overalll experience was poor. The staff member that waited on us was confused and not competent. The food was terrible. Overall staff may need more training to make good food. Previous review: We are pretty dissapointed in this place. The service was wierd. The tofu BBQ was not good. It just did not taste good and we eat tofu all of the time. The beef burger was good, but was cooked medium well/well done. The fries were flaccid and should have been cooked longer. Just over all not feeling like we need to run back.
google avatar

Jeff M.

Yelp
Burger was 12.50 no fries included. Burger ( Reubenesqe ) itself was Just ok. Not worth 12.50 on its own. Kind of felt jipped when they plopped the plate down . Should include fries. Like most places in PDX , overpriced. Lost a potential weekly customer being it's local to me so ,no I won't be going back. Another dissatisfaction and restaurant crossed off the list.

Yelp
This review is more about experience than it is about quality of food. I ordered online for a pickup. I was running 10 minutes behind and walked into Dicks and up to the spot where you pick up take-out (there is even a sign that says "take out" right above where I was standing). I must have had a deer in headlights look on my face and the cook looked at me and said "what" and i said "what?", "I am here for a pick up" and I pointed to the sign above me. He looked so agitated and put off that I almost left but I had already paid for the food. Another person came up to me and asked me for my name and told me the order would be ready soon they were just firing the fries. I thought "cool, made to order" but the fries were soggy and not very good. I told the second person that I also ordered a milkshake and he said "do you want that now?" and at that point I was like "I am here to pick up my food that should have been ready 10 minutes ago and yes, I want it now." I sounded like a jerk but the experience left me no other choice. The second person asked if I wanted napkins and I thought that was nice. The food is fine just fine. Shakes are great but the service is less than desirable. Maybe I walked in at the wrong time but I wanted to give the cook the finger. I won't be back.

Yelp
I got an Uber Eats delivery from Dick's today around noon. The quality of the nuggets improved compared to my last order in early March. So it looks like they took customer feedback and used it to improve the nuggets, which is why I'm upping my review by one star. The nuggets actually are more like tenders now. There are bigger pieces of chicken and it seemed to be more lean meat and not thigh meat. The batter was cooked through more. I'm glad I gave Dick's a second chance. I would order the nuggets again.
google avatar

Jacob W.

Yelp
I built my own bowl at Dick's a week ago and I keep thinking about how delicious it was! I am a weird person who doesn't like cheese so I appreciated that I could forego the cheese and save $1.50. Most places I have to pay for the cheese that I am taking off the burger/bowl. I ate a kale, Brussels sprouts, and quinoa bowl with chicken, carrots, hazelnuts, cilantro, and balsamic vinaigrette. All things that I enjoy separately but I was surprised how good it all tasted together. My only gripe is that I wasn't able to order online on my phone at least. That being said, I showed up in person and within 5 minutes I was out the door with my food. I also really like the location and overall feeling of the SE Woodstock restaurant.
google avatar

Dina E.

Yelp
I've had their food several times for delivery. It's always been fairly quick and still warm upon arrival. The fries are tasty but limp. I've had a few of the burgers and they're all big and meaty and a little rare (which I like) but there's something off about them...like the flavor. I wonder if they put any spices on the meat itself. Anyway, they always send my partner's burger without sauce (critical) so that tells me they pay attention to what they're serving.
google avatar

Kylie W.

Yelp
Fantastic place to grab lunch. We split the poutine and the crispy chicken sandwich. I am absolutely floored that the chicken is gluten free and still crispy, flavorful and juicy. The fries were delicious and the portion was a good size to share. Staff was friendly and the space was well kept with plants And very clean.

Yelp
Dick's Primal Burger is my go-to burger place if I want to sit down inside to relax and take my time to enjoy a burger, fries, and milkshake. Plus, they have several beers on tap too. Their menu gives you a choice of what kind of meat, cheese, bun, and extra toppings you want for your burger...or you can order from their list of specialty "Signature" burgers. Plus, you can choose to have your burger cooked to "medium" doneness with a bit of pinkness in the middle (that's the way I like it). Their burgers always have a rich beefy flavor (not all burgers are that beefy tasting). I like their fries and hand-dipped milkshakes too...so that makes three out of three things on the plus side. They have their own private parking lot in back too, which is a major convenience since Woodstock Blvd can be busy sometimes.
