Best Dim Sum Restaurants in Los Angeles | Eater LA

"Dim Sum Box SG is a mini express dim sum shop run by the team behind the former Embassy Kitchen, a once-iconic Cantonese restaurant in San Gabriel. With only four tables and a setup geared toward takeout, it caters mostly to those grabbing food on the go, though diners can also sit down for a no-frills meal served on Styrofoam with self-serve tea. Think food court vibes, but with way better food. The 26-item menu focuses on freshly made-to-order classics: steamed and pan-fried dumplings, turnip and taro cakes, and baked pineapple custard buns. There are no carts here—just check off your order and wait. It opens as early as 8 a.m. for early birds. While takeout-centric dim sum spots often signal lower prices and lower quality, Dim Sum Box SG bucks the trend. Thanks to its Embassy Kitchen roots, the dim sum here is reliably solid, walking the line between casual convenience and well-executed Cantonese staples." - Kristie Hang

A nice dim sum place in San Gabriel. Their menu is pretty similar to “yin cha” places (aka Cantonese dim sum lunch) but much more compact and cheaper that those places with dim sum trolleys. This is perfect for me because the dim sum was delicious and I didn’t like busy places. Their porridge is very good and large portion. The egg tarts are very good. Dim sum was very good overall. It's not like a unique, must-try thing, just simply delicious comfort food I'd enjoy everyday.

Open daily from 8am to 3pm, Dim Sum Box in San Gabriel, California, in the SGV (San Gabriel Valley), has the best value with most of their dishes priced at $5.49. That’s 24 traditional dishes to choose from, both savory and sweet and everything in between🫶🏼 First time trying dimsum or don’t know what to get? Order this lineup and thank me later: 🥟Shrimp Dumplings (Har Gau) 🦐Shrimp Siu Mai 🍗Chicken Feet 🧁Malay Sponge Cake 🐷BBQ Pork Bun 🍘Sticky Rice Chicken Wrap 🫜Turnip Cake with Dry Scallops 🍮Baked Egg Custard Tarts 🥐The Embassy Kitchen Special Buns 🦐Shrimp Rice Roll 🍘Sesame Red Bean Balls 🫔Seafood Egg Rolls 🍲Pork Congee

Enjoyed trying out this place. Food was fresh and I got in early so wasn't busy. They make it right when you order. The turnip cake was delicious, it was plain but I liked it like that. You can taste the other dishes and it complements them. Not alot of seats. The egg yolk buns are so fresh and yunmy, they didnt have the special black one though. Only cash which is a downside .

Google
The egg yolk bun is sooooo good! Even better than the ones I’ve had in other popular dim sum places on the area!

All in all, it’s a pleasant place for casual eating. Not a big space but everyone has a smile on their face.

My family and I were looking to pickup Dim Sum in San Gabriel on the way home to eat on the go. After a quick google search Dim Sum Box was the perfect stop. It was clean, the food looked fresh from a limited menu, but the taste was awesome! Both steamed and baked BBQ pork buns were great, the Shumai had very good ingredients, spare ribs were delicious, and they have congi! For desserts we finished with the baked custard, sesame balls and the steamed custard buns is a must! Friendly service and reasonably priced food was a win-win. We're planning on a second visit next time we're in the area. The parking situation is the only challenge so brace yourself for that.

I love dogs, but I think this place should have an area for people that like to eat out with their dogs!. In general, health codes prohibit animals from sitting on tables or seats due to contamination risks. .Health department please check this out!

Google
The chefs and waitress are from Embassy kitchen. The dim sums are of great quality like they used to be, but now you only pay 4.99. They steam the dim sum fresh after you place the order, call ahead of time. Limited seating, not much decor, but clean and AC is very strong.

Yelp
Fresh dimsum. You would notice the difference from other dimsum places that use frozen ones. A small hole in the wall with decent prices and fresh and delicious dimsum made the same day.

Yelp
Been to Dim Sum Box a couple of times now after hubby noticed it on his drive home from work one day...First time was an in-person to-go order, which we waited for about 15-25 minutes to get after ordering as we just dropped in to check out their menu offerings and decided to get some snacks for later. Second time was dine-in this past Sunday and they're never too busy with patrons dining in, but a lot of to-go and phone orders. I think they're good if you're looking for freshly made-to-order dim sum, but I do think they can get overwhelmed with a lot of orders as a couple of our dishes for dine-in were forgotten until we brought it to their attention. The dim sum staples of Har Gow, Siu Mai, Leek Dumplings, Bean Curd Rolls, Turnip Cake, and Shrimp Rice Rolls are all good. I also really like their BBQ Pork Pastry. I'd skip their Egg Tarts as they weren't the best IMO. They have a few tea options for dine-in (Chrysanthemum, Jasmine, Pu-Er, and GuanYin) & came out piping hot. As I stated, they were really busy with to-go orders so service could be a little slow...but I feel like you have to pack your patience for a dim sum spot like this vs. one with the carts that can give you the dishes immediately (but not as fresh!). Will be back again when we're wanting a quick dim sum fix because their prices are reasonable & they don't skimp on mustard, chili sauce or red vinegar if you need it. Didn't get any pictures this time because I was HUNGRY, will add after future visit :)

Yelp
We arrived at 11am on Saturday to get take out. All 4 table was already full and a number of people there to get take out. Even though the store is very small, all table were good size and comfortable not the kind you need to squeeze. We waited around 30 min to get our food. I can tell they are trying their hardest but there's only 2 people so had to wait. The lady there mostly speak Cantonese and seems to expect everyone to speak Cantonese because instead of saying order number in English she'd yell in Cantonese the last name a few times when an order is ready. But I guess you know this is authentic Cantonese We ordered close to 20 items and was considered a large order. They used iPad and all orders were nicely printed but they still managed to miss one item, but we didn't know till we got home. Quality of the food overall was decent. Not too greasy and felt clean. Good portion size and everything came hot. Fried stuff was nicely fried and crispy. Rice in lotus leaf was nice. The skin of the shrimp dumplings and rice noodle roll was kind of thick and that was the only part we wished had been better. Overall a very nice and clean restaurant.

Yelp
A pretty decent dim sum spot! Not really a sit down place but there are a few chairs and tables if you want to eat inside Parking can be difficult since it's located in a pretty busy plaza Service was friendly and welcoming Most of the dim sum are $5.49/dish and there is a good variety of 15-20 dishes. Har Gow (shrimp dumplings) and it was pretty basic but the shrimp inside was pretty big and tastyl. 3/5 The Shrimp Siu Mai was so delicious filled with shrimp and pork. So delicous without being too salty! 4/5 Chicken feet was ok, nothing special. It was pretty good but I've had better. 3/5 Bean Curd Rolls were decent. It was flavorful but not much ingredients inside. 3/5 Baked Pineapple Custard was mediocre. Not too sweet and not much custard filling. 3/5 It's an ok spot so I might or might not return

Yelp
Came here before 10am on a Sunday and was seated immediately. While it is a smaller space, there are four tables inside if you want to dine-in. My table ordered practically one of everything on their menu. Our favorites were the siu mai and pineapple bun filled with custard. All of the dishes tasted fresh and had a clean taste (not overly oily). I would come back solely for those pineapple buns. It had the perfect crust with a super soft and pillowy bun. The service was also great and super attentive.

Yelp
This is a to go dim sum place in a busy plaza next to the CVS. There are lots of places to visit once you get a parking space. I ordered. three dim sum dishes while dining at the Macao restaurant today. If you let them know that you will be at the restaurant, they will happily walk it over to you when the food is ready. We ordered steamed beef balls, shrimp dumplings (hai gau), and sticky rice in leaf wraps. Credit card minimum is $25. Our total was $18.16. Good thing I had a $20 bill or else we would've had to leave empty handed. There are many to go dim sum places around. To make this place more competitive or more convenient to patronize, please lower your minimum to $10. Dim sum 3.5 but bumped to 4.0 for the delivery gratis

Yelp
I'm not very big on dim sum but my girls wanted to try this place out today, so I tagged along. We got shrimp siu mai, BBQ pork buns, steamed sponge cake, beef coriander noodle roll, and a 3 piece order of beef balls. Since I don't eat pork or seafood, the only things I tried were the: -Beef coriander noodle roll (which was slightly bland). -Steamed spongecake (I liked this a lot, it was really good and not overly sweet). -Beef ball was really good (I think it's their rendition of a beef meatball, except the texture was a bit hard and not as beefy-textured as I'd hoped. Flavor was good though, savory w a hint of citrus). The girls said that the shrimp siu mai and pork buns were good. Initially, we were supposed to get it to-go but the girls changed their minds and decided to eat there. Would've been cool for the food to get served in the cool bamboo steamers. The place is very small, w 4 tables that could barely fit inside. The restroom was... scary, to say the least lol!! I was so scared I just decided to hold it til we got back to the hotel. One complaint I have about this place is that you'd have to spend $25 minimum to use your credit card. I guess... but what if a person only wanted 2 things (that totaled less than $25) then you just can't get anything here at all (if you don't have cash)?

Yelp
I've been here 3 times now. It's not my go to but they have solid dim sum for such a small place. They do tons of take outs and only have 4 tables. I have never been disappointed with the food except for a few items such as the sticky rice wrapped in lotus which could use some more seasoning. $6.99. The usual har low, siu mai, chicken feet are good and large in size. $4.99. I recommend the congee which is loaded with 1000 year old egg and it's thicker than most congee's nearby. Service is lacking. They seem like they prioritize whoever is making the lines instead of those sitting at the tables waiting to place the order. I had to stand up and bring the paper to the lady who kept helping new comers for take out.
google avatar

Yvonne C.

Yelp
This place is extremely small inside, there's only 4 tables. The food is okay, the rice noodle rolls are a bit too doughy in my opinion. I didn't mind that but when we weren't even fully done or asked for the check yet, the lady came w the check as if we were gonna run out without paying... like calm down and let me enjoy the rest of my tea first. Also, I'm not a huge fan of the parking structure here. Way too many people and the lot is always busy. They have additional parking downstairs too but fits about 20 cars or so.

Yelp
Yelp for a dim sum place along my route . Yelp led me to Dim Sum Box . Private parking lot shared with other businesses in the area , Small restaurant/ takeout dim sum with 4 tables , each table seats 4 . Most of the traffic I saw while dining in were take out orders . To my surprise a friendly elder Aunty works here . She was awesome manning the front of the house by her self with agility. Fresh hot pineapple custard buns is a must buy , we had some for dine in and after we ordered two more for takeout for a friend we were visiting. Chicken feet , steam leeks & shrimps dumplings , Shu mai , har gao and steamed pork ribs were delicious. Size of the dumplings were generous.
google avatar

Brianna C.

Yelp
My mom brought some home for take-out, and it was so good!!! I loved the bean curd rolls with abalone sauce, the baked BBQ pork buns, and the har gao. They were super tasty and exactly what I hoped for! My mom says the service was very good. She said it was clean inside too.

Yelp
Incredible find great location delicious food and incredible prices ALL dishes made to order. No pre made. Worth your trip and support. Congratulations to dim sum Box! Everyone one should give and support them.
google avatar

Maggie C.

Yelp
I loveeeee this place! We waited about 5-10 min for a table. Yes there's only a few tables so either order takeout or get here before dim sum rush. We ordered basically the entire menu to try everything. My favorite items were crispy bbq pasty, embassy kitchen buns and sticky rice. Everything was so tasty and made fresh in house! My only super minor thing is some of the dishes could use a tad more salt. Service is efficient too and they take visa or Mastercard.
google avatar

Jennifer H.

Yelp
Fairly priced dim sum options here that are pretty consistent in quality. Not speedy at all but they're hustling! Ordered to-go here and the wait is about 20 min with about 5 people ahead of us. $25 min for credit card charges. Dining in seemed even slower. Parking is also a pain but there is also a lower lot as well. They are on the Fantuan app for online ordering!
google avatar

J C.

Yelp
Love love this dim sum place for quick and worthy variety of dishes for a reasonable price. It's a small intimate place with a few tables (a little over 6 tables) for dine in with a few tea selections too. Do have patience as they have only two staff members serving and taking orders over the phone. Be prepared to find street parking because parking is limited.
google avatar

Chelsea C.

Yelp
If you're not too picky and needed a quick dum sum fix, dim sum box is your spot. The quality is good. The pricing is average. I do find the salt to be a little inconsistent. The siu mai was a bit bland, and the chicken feet were too salty. My favorites were the tofu skin wrapped seafood and the egg yolk bun!
google avatar

Enid B.

Yelp
This is a tiny hole in the wall. I happened to come across it when I stopped in to CVS. Ordered the Har Gau, Siu Mai, Shrimp Rice roll and Deep fried dumplings. All were very on point with the exception of the deep fried dumplings which lacked filling and flavor. Overall I enjoyed it that I came back with my daughter. I feel it's very affordable.
google avatar

Bonnie S.

Yelp
My Asian parents might disown me if I got them $20 Hailey Bieber smoothies from Erewhon but I am pretty sure they confess they love me if I treated them to made to order and freshly steamed dim sum for $5.49 each because it's such a great deal for dim sum. The Pork Shu Mai and Shrimp Har Gao are juicy, plump and fat. The Pork Xiao Long Bao are extra soupy. The turnip cakes are filled with chunks of daikons which anyone would appreciate. Those steam salted yolk buns, watch out because those buns are explosive yet tasty.

May W.

Yelp
Excellent authentic cantonese dim sum. As good as previous Embassy restaurant. Dim Sum made when ordered ,fresh and hot ! Only draw back is that it is a very small place with only 4 tables .Seats are very comfortable though.AC is sufficient for this hot weather.
google avatar

Lucia S.

Yelp
No frills. Simple basic choices and it's good. 4 tables (4 to a table) for sit down if you want it hot and not in a styrofoam box!
google avatar

Rosanna W.

Yelp
DEEEELICIOUS! And affordable! And quick. Everything is good and fresh. One thing is I also ordered chicken feet but it wasn't charged or included.... Maybe my mark was not in the middle of the box so she didn't see it. Make sure you put an X in the order sheet so they don't miss anything!
google avatar

Miranda L.

Yelp
This place is awesome for quick dim sum to-go. The quality of the food is fresh, made to order, good size for the price (avg $5 an order) and very comparable to larger restaurant. I like how they have all the essential dim sum staples and mini size, making it really convenient for 1 person. Ive reco shrimp dumpling, Leek dumpling, turnip cake. Every time I've gone, the one lady working is super kind even while handling orders and serving. $25 credit card minimum. It would be awesome if the menu could expand to other staples, like a few canto style veggie dishes :)
google avatar

Mark G.

Yelp
Small place, but they make all their dim sum there. Food was delicious, and the service is as expected.
google avatar

Christina P.

Yelp
I just happened to stop by for a quick bit because I needed to take care of some banking business. I actually had planned to take it to take it go, but after reviewing the menu and ordering hot tea, I decided to eat there. The lady was so sweet and nice. I ordered a few items off the menu. My little one loved it. Everything was fresh and tasty. Fast service, clean, and very reasonable prices. It's surprisingly cheap even with inflation going on. I would definitely go there again.
google avatar

Panda N.

Yelp
Family style take out and dine in dim sum. Good food and friendly services. Will come back!!!!
google avatar

Melissa H.

Yelp
TLDR: Everything we ordered was delicious! I was a bit shook by the price but I didn't realize it included multiple pieces with each order. They do not accept credit cards for orders less than $25. Recommendations: - BBQ Buns (one of the best I've had recently) - I did not order the minis, but the normal size wasn't too large/overwhelming and was the perfect size for a snack. - Sesame Buns - Egg tarts Service: Pretty efficient. My order was ready in 5 minutes. Ambiance: I ordered my food to-go but it seemed like a nice place to sit for a quick meal. If you do order to-go, consider calling in ahead of time.
google avatar

Hanna Y.

Yelp
Came around 11 on a Monday so it wasn't busy. It's very clean and modern inside. There are only a few tables in the restaurant so I can see how this place would get busy during rush hour times. The lady that took my order was really nice and didn't have a problem answering any questions I had. If you want to pay with card there is a $25 minimum and they also accept Apple Pay. I ordered har gow, shumai, shrimp rice noodle roles, and the ham sui gok. All were really good and filling. The only thing I have to say is that the ham sui gok could use more filling.
google avatar

Caes F.

Yelp
We went right when they opened at 8:00 AM. Seated immediately and given a checklist to order from at $4.99 a dish. Tasted the following: 1. Sesame Egg Yolk Bun 2. Shu Mai - the favorite 3. Fried Pork Donut 4. Shrimp Har Gao 5. The Shrimp Rice Noodle 6. Mini-Sticky Rice Wrap Overall, the dishes were pretty good. I would recommend the Shu Mai since it was the crowd pleaser. We also did carry out with the Chicken Feet. For a place to open at 8:00 AM, it was nice. The Plaza is small and next door is a Wells Fargo. This location does recommend cash for orders under $25 dollars.
google avatar

Phong N.

Yelp
Think fresh, plump, juicy, and perfect flavor. What a great find for a small hole in the wall! But it's kept clean and the food was delicious. I haven't had the fried stuff but the basics were delicious. Su mai, har gow, soupy dumplings, and pai kwat/black bean steamed pork ribs... really nice. The wrapper for the har gow was slightly chewy and perfect thickness. Su mai, large, bouncy amd juicy. A must try. I'll be back. Bon appetit. I ordered 7 orders and it was 40$. Plenty of food.
google avatar

Kris H.

Yelp
The traditional dim sum here is made fresh and quick. I've been here a couple times and each time, my food came out pretty fast. The selection is a bit small compared to other restaurants, but the quality and price of the food makes it all worth while. It is a small shop so be prepared to wait a bit if you want to dine in on a weekend morning as they only have a couple of tables/seats. I noticed that a lot of people do phone orders or take-out orders.
google avatar

Erica G.

Yelp
I ordered to go from this place as I've been on the hunt for the best dimsum. Their best dish is the embassy special kitchen buns. Reminded me of Tim Ho Wan. The fried items are super greasy. The sesame balls and football have little filling. For the price, it's not bad. I would prefer dimsum king for other dimsum dishes.
google avatar

Ka C.

Yelp
The parking could be a little bit chaotic, it took me awhile to park on a Thursday. The restaurant looks clean. The staff at the cashier was friendly and helpful. I ordered to-go. The dim sum selections is limited. However, with reasonable price (most dishes are $4.99) and decent quality, I couldn't complain. My favorites were the deep fried pork dumplings (outside was crunchy, the dough was perfectly made, and the meat inside was flavorful) and the Sponge cake (very spongy, soft and the sweetness was on point). I wish they can keep the pricing and quality. I will come back!

Qidong X.

Yelp
The dim sums are very tasty and fresh. The stream egg yolk buns are one of the best I ever had. The dim sums are even better than the top Chinese restaurants. The only drawback is that there are not a lot of choices.
google avatar

Tina R.

Yelp
I found this place on accident and let me tell you it's the best dim sum, I used to go NBC, but it's too expensive. This place , the service was very friendly. Dim Sum comes piping hot and fresh. I would definitely recommend this dim sum spot to family and friends.
google avatar

Madoka K.

Yelp
Quick, convenient dim sum place! Their shumai is big, plump and delicious! Har gow is also fresh and delicious too. Their mini lotus wrapped sticky rice comes in two per order and is a generous portion. Pretty much everything except for their chicken feel (my favorite item in dim sum but the flavoring isn't my taste here- just a personal preference) that I have tried, I have been very happy with. I usually order to go so it's very convenient. Everything is freshly made and reasonably priced. I recommend it:)
google avatar

ED L.

Yelp
A nice new little to go dimsum outlet in San Gabriel. I want to say "hole in the wall", but unable to because it's new, and also a newly remodeled storefront. Walking inside, you'll barely see around four tables. Yes, it's that small. You order through a paper menu that you mark up. However, their dimsum choices is not abundant. Basically, only the popular dishes such as the wrap sweet rice in banana leaf, Har Gaos, Siu Mais, Don Tats Custard, and a few others. I basically listed what I like to eat. Haha. Everything is freshly made daily. I could see and hear people in the back kitchen constantly making batches of food so it'll stay fresh and hot. Each dimsum order is $5. Which is pretty much market price everywhere else. Unlike the actual restaurants, you'll save on the tip and the per person tea charge. That's awesome, because the money saved, you'll get to order more food. Lol. The ladies there are friendly, they help order and pack everything together to go.
google avatar

Margaret N.

Yelp
This is a nice small little place that serves traditional dim sum. The selection is limited, but it includes all your basics. Where it lacks in variety, it makes up in quality. I just ate the best Siu Mai I've had in many years. Service is fast, staff is nice, food is good. Although the place is small, we arrived shortly before noon and there were empty tables. I think a lot of their business is takeout.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is fantastic. Born and raised in LA. Growing up in this culture people love to criticize nit picky stuff. Its not a restaurant. Its a take out place. A few tables, not a service restaurant. The stuff on their menu is the most common items we've ordered from any sit down dim sum restaurant. They focus on quality of the items. Most of the stuff is cook to order thus why its "slow" as people describe. We just had a 100 day party for my granddaughter for 120 people. Over a 1000 pieces of dim sum. I drove from Yorba Linda to Alhambra because of the food and the character of the people running the business. Mindy not only packaged the items in quality aluminum steam containers but provided foam to go boxes. Nice touch. There was alot of leftovers and we are still getting raving complimentary texts constantly. In a time where overall food supply quality has suffered, give them a break and kudos for upholding great quality food. Support them. I believe their other location closed down. I wish they weren't so far from us.
google avatar

Jennifer T.

Yelp
What nice little treat to enjoy dim sum at a strip mall. It's a little cafe with all your favorite dim sum. You sit yourself at a table and they bring you a menu. You mark off what you like and they bring each dish to your table. It relaxing and enjoyable. The dim sum are fresh and hot. Parking in the parking lot
google avatar

Nathalia H.

Yelp
Delicious dimsum, fast service. The place is quite small with only 4 tables inside. A lot of people order togo. Parking is available in the plaza.
google avatar

Josephine C.

Yelp
On Thanksgiving morning in November, my sister and I decided to order take out here. We arrived 10min early and found parking. The staff lady was nice and allowed us to order from the paper menu. The room looks big with 4 tables of four. The menu offer basics not too grand which I like. We filled out the menu and waited while listening to Cantonese music. We ordered egg tarts, Sui mai, ham su gook, meatballs, steam bbq baos, beef cheung fun and got all the orders packaged. The ham su hook skin was crunchy with good filling, the Sui mai and egg tarts was good, the meatballs size was small and still good. The cheung fun didn't melt in my mouth and still good. Overall dim sum was good. Parking can be hard to find depending on the time of day.
google avatar

Michelle K.

Yelp
Best value! We stopped here for take away and my kids only like ha gao and Shu Mai and both items were delicious. The pineapple bun is okay, we have had better ones in Vegas. Quick, easy and fast. They don't always answer the phone would be the only thing I would say is a bummer bc it would be nice to phone in the order.

Yelp
Embassy kitchen is back!! At first, I thought it's the chain dim sum place as the one I saw in diamond bar but it turns out to be different. When I went there for the first time, I thought the server looks familiar. Then I was like, a few items on the menu look familiar. Finally I can't help but ask the server if it's the same as the old embassy kitchen in sgv and it's confirmed. Almost all the dim sum was $4.99. I ordered the chicken feet, shrimp noodles, turnip cake. Everything is pretty fresh, well seasoned, good portion. With inflation and all, I was shocked when it was so empty. Well..I know the decor looks more like that of HK cafe and it's smaller since it's only 4 tables. I'll be honest that they don't have a lot of variety, but if you're looking for good quality food with reasonably priced dim sum, this is the place to go!
google avatar

Jennifer T.

Yelp
Ordered 4 items to go (turnip cake, chicken sticky rice, beef rice roll, egg tarts) and only the radish cake was good. Unfortunately, the beef rice roll was not cooked entirely, so we had to throw that away. Egg tarts were very pasty looking and did not taste good. Staff was friendly, but not sure if I'll be returning.
google avatar

Sam G.

Yelp
Extended wait time, I don't understand why it takes 20 mins after ordering on the phone to get my food. You only make a few things, just keep them in the steamer until the end of the day. The whole ordeal took 40 mins from the time I ordered to pick up. Unacceptable!
google avatar

Genevie Y.

Yelp
First time visiting, went on a Sunday morning to bring back home. Glad it's open early, easy to order but would probably call before coming in. Takes a bit to wait for food. But definitely worth the wait. Bought enough for 2 days worth of dim sum.

Yelp
Exceed my expectations! Better than Sea Harbor, IMO! I heard their chef was former Sea Harbor chef! Great food and prices Highly recommended

Yelp
Selection is not good, but ok for a small restaurant. The bake BBQ bun, they call it The Embassy Kitchen Special, is too dry. The shrimp dumplings, Har Gua, and Siu Mai are pretty good. There are only 4 tables, limited seating, but good service.
