"I very happily spent the better part of last week in my New Jersey hometown, where one night my family and I got takeout from 34-year-old Italian restaurant Dimaio’s. Chicken francese is one of my Italian-American joint go-to’s, and the version at Dimaio’s ($17.95) doesn’t disappoint. The sauce is ultra silky and buttery, with a good acidic lemon kick. Served over penne, it’s a classic I can eat time and again." - Eater Staff

I came here to celebrate a friend’s birthday. She made a reservation for a large round table by the window. When I arrived, I noticed they have two entrances in the front. The door on the right leads to the DiMaio’s Pizzeria section. This is where you can place an order for Pizza, Stromboli, Calzones, Hot and Cold Subs,Pasta Dishes and more for take out only. The door on the left leads to the actual restaurant where you can sit down and be served. This is a BYOB which I love. I was immediately greeted by an our server I believe her name is Paola. She was very friendly and attentive. DiMaio’s has a good amount of tables for dining in. The restaurant itself has a casual, subtle and warm vibe. I found it very relaxing. This place is family friendly, and Wheelchair Friendly. They can also accommodate vegetarians. When you arrive there’s a few spots in the front, 2 handicapped spots, and a few regular spots with remaining parking in the back around the side of building. This restaurant has been around for at least 45 years. It’s has been a staple in the Berkeley Ht’s area. For starters some of us chose their Tomato, Cucumber, and Feta Salad. The rest chose their House Salad with shaved Parmesan on it. Both salads were very good. Hot Rolls with Butter were also put on the table. For my Entree I chose their Rigatoni and Chicken Alla Serafino-Sundried tomato, broccoli, mushrooms, peas. It had a light flavor and subtle components. One of my friends chose their Chicken Valdostana- it was served with mushrooms, prosciutto & Asiago cheese. My friend ate every morsel.Another friend chose for her Entree Chicken Marsala-mushrooms and Marsala wine, she enjoyed it.Another friend chose for her Entree Seafood Marinara-shrimp, scallops, mussels, clams, and calamari. Again, everyone enjoyed their meal. The food is good here. We found for the area the food was pricey. Their chicken Francese was $29. The Seafood Marinara was $39. The other thing I found interesting was there was a charge to serve our own birthday cake. $2 per person. We decided to let the birthday girl take it home and enjoy it with her family. We just ordered desserts we picked off their tray. They were delicious , but for the price they were small portions which ranged between $11-$13 apiece. That’s definitely pricey for dessert. They do catering and parties here. I’ve had their pizza, and it’s decent too. They make a good Grandma Pie.

The food was delicious. We tried several varieties to have a taste of different. Chicken Marsala, Chicken Margarita on a bed of Angel hair and a seafood mix dish. Apple tart for dessert sealed the deal: of course with a cappuccino. One word, Yum. From the warm bread to the last drop of Cappuccino, the food was well balanced in flavor and tenderness. Hats off to cook! Looking forward to a visit again soon. The parking lot is a little confusing, but then again, the area is unfamiliar to me. It was raining also today, so that didn't help. Otherwise, all was great.

Google
Good ingredients, good dough, but they put way too much cheese in their pizza leaving it soggy. If it was neapolitan pizza I'd understand. A little less cheese and a bit more time in the oven would make their ingredients perfect. Some of the best garlic knots hands down.

Google
The pizza is always on point, and if you like spice.. Fireman's pie! Btw.. awesome menu and pricing. They do a fried pepper and pork chop that This constant hit and a staple of the menu. The dessert is always freshly made and is the perfect after ending to a good portion sized meal BYOB. This is a hidden gem in Berkeley Heights! Updated 8-24-24

Google
Very good seafood pasta, come with large portion and fresh various of jumbo shrimps, scallops, mussel, red sauce, chewy noodles. They have the best Tiramisu I ever had, I was working in the bakery before, though don’t come with cookie, satisfied with rich layers of cream in rum and espresso, not strong but you can definitely feel it.

We celebrated my mom's birthday at Dimaio's, and it was a wonderful experience overall. The BYOB policy was a nice touch, allowing us to bring our favorite drinks to toast to the occasion. The food definitely hit the spot, with each dish offering delicious flavors that pleased our palates. However, the only downside was the wait time, which was a bit longer than expected. Despite the wait, we had a great time celebrating and enjoying each other's company.

Yelp
Great Dinner as always at DiMaio. Very enjoyable experience from beginning to end. The service is always very friendly and welcoming. The restaurant vibe is what you would expect from an Italian restaurant. If you want a great meal. This is the best dine in experience in BH and local areas

Vito C.

Yelp
See my earlier review...( all my positive comments continued )..we dined at Dimaios Last evening ...outstanding as ever. I wanted to reduce my "Carbs intake" and ordered the aged ribeye...cooked to profection, medrare..with truffle ff. One of the best steak experience in a restaurant ( steakhouse and otherwise) Sal and his crew are treasures. I would make one minor constructive comment ..."the tables that seat four are too small...food dishes ,bread basket and white wine bucket..not great. Please address , thanks. Vito

Yelp
first time visit. Good food, outstanding service, BYOB and overall just a great experience.

Yelp
Old school Italian cooking & pies. My margherita was great. I prefer well donesp will ask next time. The chicken parm was delicious. Great sauce and pasta. Will bring the wife here next time for date night. Support local & small businesses.

Jake N.

Yelp
We aways love this place. The food is spectacular and the staff is so kind. Deffinitely reccomend.

Dianna C.

Yelp
Pizza's are NOT THE SAME We received the wrong topping - peppers instead of pepperoni . The sauce is lacking flavor, maybe watered down? The crust was soggy.

Anne P.

Yelp
The food is outstanding and service is excellent. Prices are reasonable and this is a great neighborhood restaurant near me in New Providence.

Laura T.

Yelp
Nice space. We went on a Thur around 4:30pm and we were the only ones in the restaurant. Service was pretty good since we were the only ones in the restaurant although still alittle slow. Had the side of meatballs as an app. They were above average but not something I would order again. I had the eggplant parmigiana and my husband had chicken parmigiana. I thought the eggplant was a good rendition of this dish. My husband really liked the chicken parm. He said his was well cooked and the chicken breading didn't get soggy. This is really more of a 3.5 rating. I would give it a 3 and my husband would give it a 4. Solid italian especially if you live in the area.

Yelp
Pizza takeout review only. Unfortunately our go-to pizza place in Long Hill township was closed for a summer vacation week so we tried these guys out. Large plain pie. Not even close. Sorry, just not that good in my opinion. It was undercooked and had a weird flavor. The dough seemed like frozen store bought. Maybe a bad night but 0-1 in my book.

Nicole O.

Yelp
Delicious. They made me carbonara despite it not being on the menu. It was incredible. We also had the chicken parm dinner and it was very good. Will be returning!

John W.

Yelp
Review for restaurant Dimaios Very nice atmosphere, extremely nice workers, our waiter was superb. My order, not too good. No flavor and the salad they give is very small. The restaurant has cut back very crowded when we left absolutely dress code so don't get dressed up the food was just okay.

Shalin S.

Yelp
After moving to the area, i was looking for local favorites for pizza. This place is that! I have tried 3 different pies and none of them disappoint. Happy that they are also open late

Dianna C.

Yelp
What's happened to the pizza? The Crust was undercooked and there wasn't enough sauce. The pepperoni was just placed on top and not cooked enough. We've been coming here for years. Just wondering what's changed?

Michael I.

Yelp
Great restaurant! I had the pork which was recommended to me by the server. Very delicious!

Tom M.

Yelp
Meh.., Slow service ( 2 hours meal for 3) Crab fettuccine tasteless and noodles were mostly less than 1 inch long and white sauce watery Sirloin steak unusually tough that we would not even bother to take leftover (most of it ) home Soft shell crab with vet done, tasteless $149 for 3 ... blah I'm visiting NJ ( where I grew up) from IL, what happened NJ to great Italians restaurants on every corner???

Jennifer C.

Yelp
The food is delicious and the ambience is so beautiful and the staff is so polite and friendly.

Amy O.

Yelp
We had a nice relaxing dinner on a quiet Tuesday night. The restaurant is small so I understand that you need reservations on the weekend. Our entrees came with a nice little starter salad. I really enjoyed my Bucatini Amatriciana. The restaurant is BYOB. Half of the building is a takeout pizza place but don't let that discourage you from a nice dinner on the other side! I noticed that the prices on the website are not current. Our dishes were all a few dollars more then the listed price so I hope they update the website.

Salomon W.

Yelp
Ordered over the phone -- no online? Really, in 2022? Ordered 4 chicken dishes: Valdosta, with mushrooms, prosciutto (allegedly; cook must've thought about it, but it's missing), and Asiago; Margherita, with artichokes and sun dried tomatoes; and Francese, in a lemon sauce; all served with ziti. Small chicken portions; excellent sauces. There's a very small parking lot up front, more parking in back. Good food, not a good bargain, but has potential. I'll go back.

Shelly R.

Yelp
Have gotten takeout several times now and have not been disappointed. Good pizza and entrees. Staff is always very pleasant.

Bill B.

Yelp
First time yesterday with friends that rave about this place. I can see why. Seems like they have a very active takeout business based on the line at the counter, but we were there for dinner. Very pleasant and attentive wait staff, and the food is really outstanding. We shared some PEI mussels which were cooked to perfection, had some fra diavlo dipping sauce as well which was just the right amount of heat. Not particularly noisy which made for easy conversation. All of us had some type of pasta dish; tastes like the pasta is homemade and perfectly cooked, al dente. Desserts equally tasty and byob keeps the bill reasonable. Will definitely return.

Stacy H.

Yelp
My foodie colleague made a reservation at Dimaio. We had short wait for our table which was a good thing because this is a restaurant where you brown bag your wine/booze. Good thing there is a wine store a half block away. Wine in hand, Sara our server opened our bottles while we discussed the menu. They have many Italian favorites that are not listed on the menu but can be prepared for you I.E. Chicken Marsala. We ordered the Pork Chop, Chicken Parmigiana, Rigatoni with Sausage all the entrees came with salads & bread. The chicken & pork chop was so tender. Everything was delicious. We were talked into dessert. The cheesecake was so light, Chocolate Mousse was delightful, the Tiramisu tasty & the Limoncello was divine. This place is no frills, good Italian and filled with locals enjoying food & friends.

Karen B.

Yelp
I've been here several times and have had very good experiences. Tonight's was different. Our dinner (appetizer, salad, meal) was delicious, but it took over an hour to get served (to two people in their 80s). Our reservation was at 5:45, and we did not get our entrees until almost 7:00. This was after telling two people we had been waiting for awhile. We also were told after paying that our American Express gift card could not be accepted. Hopefully all of this was an aberration. We do like this restaurant.

Yelp
One of the better Italian restaurants in the area. Clams with linguine is an excellent dish . Wife had shrimp scampi said it was one of the best she had . Highly recommend this restaurant for a solid meal !

Jamie B.

Yelp
So glad that the front desk at the hotel had this restaurant on their list of near by recommendations. Being from AZ I was not sure how we would handle the outdoor dining in 28 degree weather. But the tent was well lit, comfortable and very worn. Each table had their own heater directly above. The menu was amazing. So may good choices, everything looked delicious. I went with the salmon piccata and it was delicious! The service was excellent and I look forward to coming back again next time I am in town.

Kristine L.

Yelp
I find myself in Berkeley Heights every other month, and when I do, I always come here for the pizza! I'm sure they have other things that are fabulous on their menu, but just a plain slice of pizza from them is heaven in my mouth! Mind you, I have to get two slices, because I inhale the first slice because it's so damn good, and then I have the second slice to savor and truly appreciate all the flavors this pizza has to offer. The crust is delicious, the sauce is delicious, and the cheese is just a right amount. I literally cannot think of any other place where the pizza is as good as Dimaio Cucina!!! Side note: I usually just get this pizza from the takeout window that they have set up in the front of their store. There is ample parking, but you have to drive around to the back to get there. Sorry, no pictures. I ate my slices too fast!!

Allison W.

Yelp
Every so often you eat a takeout meal which is exceptional and you need to call the restaurant to compliment the chef. Tender meat and perfectly balanced tomato sauce made this chicken parm notably delicious.

Astaire P.

Yelp
Very good Margherita pizza in the area. If you're looking for a delicious Margherita pizza with doughy texture, you won't be disappointed.

Barbar K.

Yelp
We enjoyed the food and service. It was pricey which we were not expecting. $18 for an apetizer was a bit steeper. Our bad it was a special and was not on menu. We should have asked the price'

Steve R.

Yelp
Came here for a Christmas gathering of friends and everything was great. We had a large table of 10 and the service was friendly and helpful when selecting our meals. It was a little slow, but the place was packed and we weren't really in a hurry. Food was delicious. I had a char-grilled rib-eye steak over broccoli rabe and my wife had the rigatoni pasta, marinara sauce with plum tomatoes and vegan ricotta, both excellent. Everyone else enjoyed their meals as well. The double cut pork chop, a house specialty, was a stand out. Would definitely come here again.

Sarah M.

Yelp
WORST EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE! We have been waiting 2+ hours for our food and no comment from the waitress or anyone in the restaurant. I am a patient person and I never have been so angry about no communication about how long the food would take. Not our waitresses fault but she could have communicated that this meal would take more than 2 hours to receive. I will never be returning here. Ever. I am appalled by this customer service. UPDATE: they did not offer any compensation for this ridiculous service - nor did the manager even come to apologize or check if everything came out ok, I have not experience this blatantly bad service in years

Francesco R.

Yelp
Food was just ok. Had a roasted garlic chicken meal. Needed seasoning for sure other than a lot of salt. In a place where you usually expect good Italian food this was just OK. I'm sure there are better options ... Time to look again.

David M.

Yelp
Great food, fabulous hot sandwiches ( sub rolls are amazing) . Can't comment on the service as I've only gotten take out. Pizza is very good too.

Meredith W.

Yelp
Love the service and the food. Go to order are Margherita, linguine in white clam sauce, truffle mushroom pizza, and calamari.

Tony R.

Yelp
I was introduced to this place by friends I met in Punta Cana. I have been here 5 times now and every time is absolutely amazing. This time I had the chicken parm. It was by far the best I've ever had in my life. Everything is so fresh. The owner is the nicest guy and treats you like family. I would give it 20 stars if I could.

Raquel R.

Yelp
Took 45 min to make a Cesar salad! Even when I called and was told it would take 20 min. 5 people came and went and I still didn't have my Cesar salad! Just saying if your going to work and think that a simple Cesar salad would be nice and quick, think again !

Pete M.

Yelp
I was nicely surprised today - because some of the food fotos on Yelp frankly weren't that great but this place was chosen by an associate. The traditional Italian American fare is actually very good, served nicely in a smart room and very good wait staff.

Linda V.

Yelp
We haven't been back for awhile and finally ventured back recently.. Our first visit years ago was phenomenal but in the past few years, our dining adventures took us to try new and different places but it was definitely time to return. We arrived early since I know that they usually are packed on weekends and parking isn't easy so early is best for parking ease. We continue to like the decor and environment. The service continues to exceptional. They are extremely attentive with frequent check ins and efficient. They move quickly so you can be in and out quickly. Our entrees had both highs and average items. The best items continued to be the seafood fra diavolo and we tried the pork chops which was our new menu adventure. The seafood fra diavolo was full of fresh seafood. The flavor of the fra diavolo was on point. The pork chop was over the top moist and tender and the pepper was the perfect add to the dish. It added the perfect touch of spice to every bite. The fettuccine bolognese and crusted rib eye steak were average/good. I had high expectation for the rib eye steak based on the description on the menu but didn't find anything special. The crust ended up a bit soggy and didn't add extra flavor to the steak as I had expected. The bolognese was average. Again nothing over the top. Reasonably good but nothing special for the price. We will continue to venture through the menu with future visits to keep trying new dishes. There could be hidden dishes yet to be discovered.

Jack D.

Yelp
Food is always fresh, tasty, and delicious. Ingredients are always high quality. The service is friendly and good. The owners are amazing there friendly and hard working.

Robert S.

Yelp
DiMaio Cucina is one phenomenal restaurant! Been coming here for many years. Chef and owner Sal is a gourmet chef and his creations are awesome. Mouthwatering signature dishes like Whole Bronzino with fresh crabmeat stuffing and Pork Belly Ragú are just two. Soft shell crab specialty dishes and Heirloom Tomato salad when in season. I travel over an hour to eat here because it's just so good. BYOB and reservations are recommended.

Peggy C.

Yelp
Saturday night dinner table for four! Everything about our evening was perfect - our waitress, our server, the ambience, and the food! We've been eating at Dimaios for years, but this time they outdid themselves. We ordered 3 shared appetizers and we each ordered a different entree. Simply wonderful! Thank you, DiMaios!

Kevin S.

Yelp
Really nice set up for outdoor dining. Take out is quick and easy as well. Big fan of their pizza. Tip: order it well done.

nancy p.

Yelp
Held a private afternoon party here for 20 guests in Jan 2022. Communication was excellent, flexibility was excellent , food was excellent, event was excellent. I had 3 guests with special diet needs that were addressed with care, and the selections on their party menu were quite suitable for the rest of the guests. Tami was very easy to work with, above and beyond our expectations . I have already recommended this restaurant to others with confidence and I seldom have the courage to do so. All of my guests are looking forward to going again.

Pat C.

Yelp
I had a rehearsal dinner this past weekend. I was from out of town and arranged everything via phone and text. Evening was perfect . Very accommodating with menu. Food and service was excellent!

Heather F.

Yelp
This place is soooo good! My husband and you have gotten take out there many times. Every time we love what we order. My husband has tried a few different seafood dishes and has said the quality is great. He particularly likes the seafood fra diavolo, which comes in a massive tray and is enough for two, and the fettuccine lucullus. I have tried a few chicken dishes and the one with artichoke and spinach over penne is my favorite. The takeout meal comes with a French loaf and a small salad.

Brad S.

Yelp
This is an all around awesome Italian restaurant. Best chicken parm. Awesome pizzas! Highly recommend I've been eating here A LOT simply because my job keeps me busy enough that it's difficult to cook and the food here is just wonderful. I highly recommend the chicken parmigiana dinner. The pizza is awesome. Can't go wrong with the cheese steak hoagie. The list goes on. If you haven't eaten here you're really missing out.

Jenn M.

Yelp
Service - The service at this restaurant is phenomenal. The wait staff is attentive and efficient. Food - The restaurant starts off service with a bruschetta for a nominal fee. It's fresh and a great starter truly no appetizer needed. The portions are large and the food is definitely fresh. Setting - The restaurant is small and intimate and can sit about 100 guests. (So technically not that small, lol!)

Stacey A.

Yelp
Amazing Pizza and pasta dishes every time. Really some of the best pizza and Italian food in the NJ / NYC area.

Nevil S.

Yelp
Food was a bit of a hit or miss. I ordered grilled octopus, vegetable pasta, and linguini with white clam sauce, and side order of fries. The two pasta dishes were pretty good, but the octopus was not tender at all. Portion of octopus was also very small for the price. The bread they served on the side wasn't the best as it was burnt at the bottom. For its price point, I would definitely expect more.
