"Malden’s District Kitchen’s special Lunar New Year menu includes braised oxtail slow-cooked in a rich, savory broth; rice cakes served with pork and vegetables in a savory soy seasoning; and a delightful stir-fried garlicky cabbage side dish." - Erika Adams, Valerie Li Stack

"A predecessor to the xiao long bao, the lesser-known but still massively popular Yangzhou-style tang bao (literally translates to “soup dumpling”) has yet to capture the same fanfare in the U.S. But if you’re desperate to try one, head to District Kitchen in Malden, a rare local purveyor of this type of soup dumpling. The restaurant also serves a variety of other interesting (and attractive) dumplings, including cuttlefish, pork, and chive dumplings in a black cuttlefish ink wrapper and lobster, pork, and cucumber dumplings in a red wrapper." - Erika Adams, Valerie Li Stack, Eater Staff

"This is, I think, the only Boston-area restaurant to serve one of those absurdly giant soup dumplings that you slurp from with a straw. I wouldn’t recommend getting that for takeout or delivery, but I would recommend basically every other dumpling on the menu, like the jet-black cuttlefish dumplings or the pork-filled mama dumplings. Also try the Sichuan poached fish, cumin lamb or beef, and broccoli in garlic sauce. —Rachel Leah Blumenthal" - Rachel Leah Blumenthal, Terrence Doyle, Nathan Tavares, Karen Wilber

Thank you District Kitchen for making my first big catering order a success for my employee luncheon! I put the food order in about 2 weeks ago and everything was perfect for the day of. The food was so fresh, the veggie dumplings were to dieeee for (not literally lol). Nothing was overly greasy and the portions were perfect for our party of about 30. They gave us extra sauce, napkins, and utinsels and helped us bring ALL the food in the car. Shoutout to Alice &her team for a great lunch. Go support 💙

Google
Great atmosphere! Such a cozy place for lunch or dinner. Love the music. The atmosphere is lively. Servers are very helpful, nice, & professional. The food is delicious! The mango hibiscus cocktail, crab rangoon and spicy wonton in chili sauce is 👌💯😋. Will definitely go back.

I tried a lot of dishes. Best was the Cumin Lamb and the Shrimp. Spick chicken was Amazing. Very quick service. Good for quick weekday Dinners.

My husband and I went on a Tuesday I really wanted to try it and it didn’t disappoint. The lunch specials were very affordable, delicious and a great amount of food. Also tried the squid game special drink and it was perfect. I would definitely go back but on a Friday or Saturday night which our waitress said it gets pretty busy.

District Kitchen is the perfect place to go to with friends for shareable plates. The music was early 2000s vibe. The host takes pictures of you with a polaroid. They were decorated for Christmas leading me to believe they rotate their decor. Perfect place to go with friends. Come hungry. There was parking close by in the T parking lot.

Google
Chinese fare with a modern far. Their portions are decent and it’s a great spot for fun cocktails. The soup dumplings are very nice as well.

Google
One of my fav spots in Malden!! They have a great menu with a ton of options that include modern and traditional Chinese food. The atmosphere is super fun and it’s always a good time.

Google
It was a slow lunch into dinner rush for sure. The area it is located is very secret and quite small. But the food is very good. I sat at the bar and because of the slow business the food came at very different times. I can't blame the staff but the kitchen was way off. I ordered shrimp fried rice and salt and pepper fish filet. The rice came out real quick. So quick that I could see my entree just getting put into the oil when I got the rice. Which in the future please try to think about the patron when they are dining because it could have save the review to all five stars. I do have to take a way stars because everything I got was dirty. Cups spoons plates. I had to wipe and clean it all. Hygiene was negative stars.

Yelp
Perfect birthday spot! We had a party of 5 - drinks were fun and tasty, food was delicious and service was quick and friendly. And best of all GOOD PRICE.

Sophie B.

Yelp
Cuttle fish dumplings were so amazing. The flavor was an explosion in my mouth. Loved the texture of the dough and filling. There was also a ton of filling. Took two bites of these guys. Didn't love the lavender drink but when we mentioned it to the server he was quick to remove it from outr bill. My friend had had it another day and said it tasted very different this time so maybe it was just an off day. Id def go back to try more of the menu!

Michael M.

Yelp
I used to love the district kitchen. Then they started playing bad rap music. They kept playing the same 3 songs. They ignored me when I mentioned this. They lost a customer!

Anna F.

Yelp
Just went back for the first time in a few years. It's definitely a very festive atmosphere- with the music, decorations, and colorful drinks with little ducks floating inside. The food was all great! My taro cocktail was a good concept (my favorite boba flavor) but too strong. I really enjoyed the soup dumplings. They had a nice sauce that came with it, that's a must to accompany it. The other dish that hit it out of the park was the beef and string beans. Definitely ask for hot oil. Another hit was the salt and pepper fish- which tasted like the fresh crispy fish from a fish and chips dish, with an extra spicy pepper and cabbage mix that went great with it.

Yelp
To start, this place is EXPENSIVE. Good food, don't get me wrong. Portion sizes are okay for such expensive prices. We were here during the holiday season and saw that some of the drinks were charged $40+ and realized it was because of the appearance (they use cool kitchenware shaped like Santa and sleighs and stuff for cocktails). We ended up just getting the xiao long baos, fried shrimp in mayo sauce, and the squid ink pasta. I was not full after and regretted not getting something more filling (but then again it would have been more expensive so idk). Ambience - this place was also so loud. Granted we were here on a Friday night. But, it was only a little bit after 7pm, and the music was blasting so loud I could barely hear or talk to my friend the whole night. It wasn't a party scene either. Everyone around us were other families or groups of friends, not like it was a party scene (though it felt like it because of the loud blasting club like music). We had to wait until moments between songs playing to shout to hear each other. Service - the service is amazing. This is really the only reason I am rating it 3 stars. We had a server who was friendly. Food came fast too. They didn't rush us at all. They also checked on us a lot and always made sure our waters were refilled. Overall - good food, portion sizes are not the best though. Service is wonderful. Atmosphere is so loud on a Friday night. I feel like this place really blew up on TikTok recently and I wonder if that's why they upcharged so many of the dishes. I know Boston is expensive but this place is pretty expensive.

Lilian W.

Yelp
I came here with friends the weekend before Halloween and all the wait staff was dressed up and the decor was cute and spooky. The music was blasting kind of loud so it was hard to hear each other, but we enjoyed vibing to the throwback 2000s hits. They had special Halloween cocktails that were really unique! We tried the Arabian night, which was a whiskey and lime mix in an Aladdin-esque genie lamp teapot. It was lit on fire to resemble magical gold sparks. Pricey, but very cool! The food was also quite good. The string beans were crispy and garlicky and we loved the pineapple shrimp. The three cup chicken was a little too salty but still very tender. The dumplings were fine but nothing special, and a little doughy for my taste. Overall a fun night with yummy food!

Gloria M.

Yelp
Ordered for takeout so I was not able to really get a vibe of the inside but from what I saw it was nice. The staff was friendly during the handoff. I loved the Xiao Long Bao, I added some chili oil to the soy sauce and it was perfect. I really liked the Spicy Wonton in Chili Sauce, it was the perfect amount of spicy. The Mamas dumplings were pretty standard but good nonetheless. Prices were fair as well, will defiantly be back!

Meiyi Y.

Yelp
The food is pretty standard, but their drinks are quite unique! The crab rangoons are folded as triangles instead of the usual squares, which I prefer because of the filling ratio. The dandan noodles, beef noodle soup, and beef brisket stew are what you would expect. I was most excited about the XXL soup dumpling, but it was hard to eat to get the best experience. The dumpling was left with more of a thick sauce after having to sip some of the soup out with a straw. The restaurant was pretty empty on a Thursday night dinner. It was a bit difficult to get the servers' attention to get extra utensils, but they were nice! The bar restaurant vibe was great for casual dinner to catch up with friends.

Emma T.

Yelp
Their soup dumplings were good, but not the best I've ever had. The food was served fast and their menu had a ton of options. The ambiance is nice and clean and the prices are pretty standard for the area. They validate parking for a specific garage.

Kiki C.

Yelp
First time here and I couldn't find parking due to being on the main road I got there after the meter stop running. Please make sure you make a reservation. Didn't make any reservations just did a walk-in and got a table on a Friday night. Oh the vibe was amazing I love the music list and the guests were amazing it's a full house. It's loud inside because the music is on blast plus the crowd were vibing. The food was delicious.... Well, one dish that we all agreed was the salt and pepper jumbo shrimp were bland bland. Soup dumplings, cucumbers salad (no pic) stir fry string beans, and Mongolian beef and house fried rice was all amazing

Ashley C.

Yelp
The service was immaculate. A great time for going out with friends for a fun night or for brunch. District kitchen really caters to the experience and the food and cocktail curation speaks to anyone who comes to dine. I really enjoyed my time

Kathleen A.

Yelp
This place was great! The spicy wonton was my favorite! I will def come back again. The staff was very friendly and gave us good recommendations on what to order. If you are ever in Malden and want Chinese food come to district kitchen!

Emma B.

Yelp
The first thing I should say is the food is fire. It's real really good. And it tastes pretty authentic Chinese from what we could tell. We got the spicy beef noodle soup, xiao long bao, and and eggplant stir fry. It was all perfect. No notes. My favorite was the noodle soup--the broth was delicious, the noodles were thick and chewy, and it was nice and traditionally simple. But we were honestly shocked because the vibes of the place do not scream "authentic and delicious Chinese food." It's heavily westernized with trap music blasting, colored lights flashing, and a bar taking up one of the walls. As my bf put, it felt like eating dinner in a club. It was off putting eating with Megan Thee Stallion blasting ngl. There were also large screens playing various sports game. It was like being at a restaurant, sports bar, club, Chinese place all at once. The service wasn't too bad, but we did order beers which they forgot about (and eventually canceled). Overall, the food is great but the vibes need work.

Sarina W.

Yelp
Loved this place!!! Went for a birthday dinner with friends and service was great. Food came out hot and the drinks were very aesthetic and tasty!

Liliana E.

Yelp
Probably the most delicious Asian restaurant that I have ever been to. Great vibe, excellent service and the food was simply amazing!!!!!

Patrice M.

Yelp
Great drinks, food and service! Sat at the bar so we got to see all the fun drinks being made along with the good food. We over ordered and the kind server was concerned we didn't like the food. I really appreciate that about a place when they notice and care if you don't finish your meal. Highly recommend!

Michelle T.

Yelp
Overpriced trendy Chinese food that is somewhat Americanized. I came here when they first opened and wasn't quite impressed, which is why we never came back. We ordered take out on Thanksgiving, desperately looking for wonton soup since my father in law was sick. I think it's something that they likely whipped up and charged $16. I appreciate them being creative but I wish I had taken a picture of it. It was the saddest wonton soup I've ever seen. No garnishing whatsoever. The broth had soggy fried onion sediment on the bottom of the container, and wontons that were likely just their regular steamed dumplings (lacking the wonton wrapping) that they packaged separately. Dumplings are a perfectly fine replacement except for the lack of flavor. The soup and dumplings were both very bland and I'm not generally keen on salty like some ramens. I even ordered a quart of duck sauce for my FIL and he charged me $16 for a quart of their "house made" duck sauce with fresh apples. Because it was for my FIL, I shamelessly accepted the $16 price tag which in hindsight I regret. The only positive thing I would note is, the ambiance. It's a small restaurant but has a modern feel. They also have bar seating with TVs. Also their xiao long Bao's are decent but wouldn't come back here for them.

Darlini S.

Yelp
This was the worst Chinese food I've ever had in my life. The service was good but the food was bad. Deep fried, too much sauce, soup dumpling had in accurate description, was more like shui mai. Just terrible. I wouldn't know where to start by improving the food.

Andrew C.

Yelp
I have been here a number of times since moving to Malden and have to say it has an excellent atmosphere and great food! Ive had many dishes including their dumplings and various noodle dishes. All have been very plentiful and tasty. I especially enjoyed the pepper beef noodle I had the last time I was there. It is so close to the station so a great stop before heading home and in a great location. Overall love this place and have yet to try their giant soup dumpling so I will be back!

Hursuong V.

Yelp
Solid food. Great modern vibes, clean, and very fast service. Sort of wish there was a bit more food per each dish. There's a bar too and a few TV screens, each playing a different type of sport. Easy to be seated on a Saturday night.

Rosiee N.

Yelp
Had a blast at District Kitchen. Drinks were amazing and food was authentic. The vibe is perfect for a night out with friends. Our server was friendly and kept us in the loop! Highly recommend the place.

Alexandra M.

Yelp
We've eaten her twice now and I can't tell what they're trying to be. Club? Sports bar? Musix was so loud we had to shout across the table and the TVs were on some game on mute. Cocktails were very watered down. I'll stick with getting take away for the food.

Ralph B.

Yelp
Kind of disappointing. The service is very good but the food and drinks were mediocre. Nice selection, but unfortunately not very well prepared or flavored. We had the cuttle fish dumplings and the dough was much too thick and while the filling was serviceable, it wasn't very memorable. The salt and pepper calamari was seriously overcooked and tough. Squid has to be very quickly cooked very hot for that kind of dish and this wasn't. The decor is quite nice, but it was a bit loud. Not as crazy as some places, but conversation across a table was difficult. Overall, for the fairly expensive prices, not worth it IMHO

Jennifer T.

Yelp
I thought the food and drinks were ok. Nothing blew me away but the prices were quite high for the food. I would come by for drinks and snacks as it has more like a nice bar vibes for me. Everything tasted good and there was plenty of seating inside. It's located at a very convenient spot near the t stop.

Brianna C.

Yelp
This place is amazing!!! We started with drinks which came out really fast. We tried the cuttlefish dumplings, which were so tasty. We also ordered the noodles, general gaos chicken and pineapple shrimp. The pineapple shrimp was my favorite, not only was it fried but the creamy sauce was delicious. The service was great. We were in and out of the restaurant in less than an hour, on a Saturday night! I would highly recommend. It definitely is more of a fun bar scence. We will be back soon.

Justine J.

Yelp
I go here a lot and the food is consistently delicious! This is one of my favorite restaurants in Malden. I love the crunchy chicken Szechuan style. The staff is SO nice and welcoming and I love the vibe. The drinks are also great, they have really fun drinks for a big group (Ferris wheel shots, seasonal drinks, smoking drinks). Usually when a place has sort of gimmicky drinks the food isn't as good, but the food here is truly incredible!!

Julieanne T.

Yelp
The service was exceptional, the ambiance was delightful, and the manager, Daniel, was the best! The food was delicious and fresh. There were also numerous options on the menu. We were starving but didn't have to wait long because the food arrived promptly. Life hack: if you park at 39 Florence St, they validate your ticket! Thank you for everything tonight, Daniel!!

Reyes M.

Yelp
Food looks amazing service reasonable pricing the drinks were good Daycor definitely coming and they did this whole thing when they pick your birthday everybody cheered

Bridget B.

Yelp
OOOOOOO I love this place so FREAKING much!!! Mmhm my name is Janelle and I like Chinese food so much yessireeeee!!! the chiki brocci is so yummy!!! I love chikibrocci!! 100% Janelle approved!!!! I'm Janelle and I love u DK!!!!

Connie C.

Yelp
I read some Yelp reviews before I came here and had high expectations on the so called "best in boston" soup dumplings but was super disappointed and saw them take it out of a frozen red package. Skin is thick, lack of soup... can't even call it a soup dumpling. I can buy better ones at Trader Joe's frozen aisle... The sizzling beef noodle was pretty good. Very saucy, which was great flavors for the noodles. Their noodle texture tasted very fresh and doughy. The beef noodle soup was mediocre. The soup didn't have much flavors. Very light and not the usual rich tangy broth typical beef noodles come with. Overall, disappointed on soup dumplings, but would go back for the other stuff.

Fiona Z.

Yelp
Came here for a dinner one weeknight and tried a few things. I think this was the first time I've had soup dumplings since I've come to Boston so I was pretty pleased to eat some yummy soup dumplings. Service was great and the soup dumplings were indeed a standout, but I wasn't impressed with the other things I tried. They charge for rice by the bowl (I think this is normal based on a few other Chinese restaurant experiences in Boston, but I'm really not used to it). District Kitchen has a nice atmosphere inside and it would be a fun place to hang out and eat after work. Soup dumplings: Definitely recommend. Small, juicy, flavorful, and even better with the dipping sauce. I could definitely eat these again and again. Minced beef soup: Would not recommend. Their version was more watery than any other minced beef soup/West Lake beef soup I've tried. The beef wasn't even minced; they were tough little strips I didn't enjoy eating. The whole soup lacked flavor and I noticed a strong flavor to the beef that I didn't like. Normally, I barely taste the soft minced beef in minced beef soup. Salt and pepper (fried) fish filet: Might recommend. These weren't crispy at all like they should be; the filets were borderline soggy. However, they were otherwise flavorful and delicious.

Lisa L.

Yelp
Why we don't order here more often is beyond me. The flavors are unique. The House Special Sea Bass w/ Spicy Pickle Cabbage Hot Pot took us to the flavor bosom of Qin g Dao - truly a gift from the homeland. The red chili peppers were mild & easily removed - if desired. We've had the over the top spicy variations in the past & prefer this option. A bit of an online order blip... didn't get a confirmation, so I called. They didn't get order, they very kindly suggested I place order with them. Perfect results. Packaged well. Also ordered: Sizzling Calamari, Sautéed Bok Choy, House Special Fried Rice (which worked well with all items). Very enjoyable & enough for tomorrow. With tax, $105, plus 15% takeout Tip - Be Kind.

V N.

Yelp
Great food and portions are huge! The soup was thought to be one person but it's shareable between two people. Great atmosphere and service, it wasn't too busy.

Mary D.

Yelp
What a delightful meal! We had the cucumber salad, shrimp dumplings, dan dan noodles, and crispy chicken szechuan style. The food was tasty - the cucumber salad and dan dan noodles were less spicy than expected however the crispy chicken was on point. It's obviously a popular dish because at least two other tables were enjoying it as well. The service was one of the best I've experienced at an Asian food establishment. The wait staff was attentive and the food came out quickly. The ambiance was clean and lively - next time I'm sitting at the bar where I can watch them set up the ferris wheel of shots.

Nina W.

Yelp
The food tastes exactly like it looks. It is flavorful, healthy portions and friendly service. It's quaint inside and fills quickly. I ordered the chicken & broccoli and egg rolls. It was just enough. Delicious goodness!

Sharon L.

Yelp
We got district kitchen for pick up as it was one of the few restaurants in the area that was still open relatively later in the night. We got five dishes and they were all pretty decently priced. The beef noodle soup had a great taste and the noodles retained a bouncy texture. The beef was tender and overall this dish was delicious!! The shrimp appetizer had a nice sweet taste and the shrimp was cooked well. Definitely a great appetizer to get. The popcorn chicken had a good taste but since we picked it up it did get a bit soggy by the time we arrived home. The chicken wings were probably the least favorite out of the five. It was a bit over cooked and nothing about its taste was overly good. The pork fried rice was a great dish to pair with all the other dishes. It was a very balanced dish and came in a packed container. It was a decent portion. Overall, I definitely enjoyed my meal from district kitchen and I'm looking forward to eating here in person some day!!

Eazsy R.

Yelp
Amazing and amazing and amazing food and service . It is the best experience of my life. The food is so good and I have come back every week. The environment is just charming and welcoming

Phuongvy D.

Yelp
The best restaurant in Northshore area- amazing food and drink, highly recommended. Drink is fresh and fruity, not sweet just how i like it- perfectly balance

Brendan C.

Yelp
Found BONE fragments in my General Gao's TOFU. Nothing a vegetarian wants to see less in their meal than a piece of bone. Damn near cracked a tooth on it too.

Serene C.

Yelp
I tried this place tonight and was really impressed with the quality and taste. The scallion pancakes are decent, nothing too out of the ordinary. Cuttlefish dumplings are really unique and were tasty. I did find the skin a bit too thick for my liking but it was still really good. If you're worried about the squid ink/color, the flavor isn't that strong and if you close your eyes you won't even know it's black. I was introduced to a new Chinese dish tonight: Disanxian which I believe is called 3 wishes on the menu? Clay pot potatoes, peppers and eggplant. It was amazingly complex flavor wise and so good. My brother has had this dish in China and said that the potatoes were cut to American size. It's typically smaller and thinner but that's not a bad issue. The cumin lamb was good. The star dish of the night was certainly the sizzling black pepper beef with homemade noodles. First, the beef itself was perfectly cooked and really well seasoned. The sauce is on point, really tasting legitimate like how it's supposed to. The three of us grew up in Asia so we have had this dish. I really like their homemade noodles which is a nice touch as this dish usually doesn't I include that. As a noodle lover I'd say the noodles had a great chewy yet smooth and soft texture. So it's a perfect bite with the sauce and the beef and peppers. I was happy with my Honeydew Yakult mocktail I ordered too. It was a bit heavier on the soda and lime than the Yakult itself but I still liked it. If I lived in the area I'd probably visit a lot but since I don't I have to be content that I got to try it! In the words of my friend, this sizzling beef reminds me of home. That's a huge compliment when you're living away. Worth the try!

Melissa C.

Yelp
Great service and great food although one thing I'd like to mention is that the soup dumpling tasted a bit doughy, it had good flavor but that was my only critique. I would come back.

MyDiem T.

Yelp
The best restaurant in Malden!!! The foods are so delicious and amazing. I literally have to go here twice a week- once weekday and once weekend. The food is amazing , drink is so fruity but not too sweet just how I like it. The best restaurant and bar in Malden. I always impressed every single time that i come here . I feel like home

Abigail S.

Yelp
REALLY YUMMY SPOT. Malden is so lucky to have this place. I feel like downtown Malden has a ton of take out spots, while I recommend sitting inside this one. Their bar options are good too. Easy to get there by T or parking in downtown malden. Get the dan dan noodles! staff was so kind too.

Ana D.

Yelp
A secret gem in Malden. Small Asian restaurant with modern vibes and delicious food. Service is fast and friendly. I wish they had a wider variety of proteins, most of their dishes are made with chicken. Their cocktails are tasty as well. Can't wait to come back.

Kirtana S.

Yelp
I loved eating here! The famous XXL dumplings were incredible and the service was spectacular. Disco lights turn on at night and it was fantastic.

Nicole G.

Yelp
I came here wanting to try their large soup dumpling and they did not disappoint! It was so big and tasty! They had little straws that came with the soup which was amusing but very helpful! We had small dumplings too and they were also tasty :) I had a drink as well which was cute and a little strong but still tasty! When you come here, definitely keep in mind that they only had live street parking or a lot parking. They do provide a voucher though for parking when you show them your parking lot ticket so that's nice! The staff was pretty attentive and nice.

Araxie M.

Yelp
Since the beginning, this place has continued to increase their prices and reduce their quality. I'm pretty baffled how it is acceptable to charge $30 for a tiny container of chicken. Our last order was cold and rubbery. Asian food in Malden is sacred and all the gems are dying out. Places like this are flashy and exorbitant but the quality doesn't scale when they get busy. Shame.

Brandon G.

Yelp
I think this restaurant might have the best xiao long bao in the greater Boston area! The skin isn't too thin or too thick, the soup is flavorful, and the portions are reasonable. I wish Malden were more easily accessible so that I could go more often! I'm glad there's delivery as far as Cambridge. A fair warning: the mapo tofu is fiery! It's not a trivial amount of spice.

Gloria H.

Yelp
We stopped by District Kitchen for a quick early dinner and tried a few of their offerings. Overall I liked their flavors but had a few issues. Pork and shrimp wontons in chili oil - this was amazing! Whole shrimp, juicy wontons, delicious marinade. Definitely worth getting. Hometown style clams - I really liked the marinade on this one but the clams themselves had a lot of sand -- about half of the clams had sand and it made it very difficult and unpleasant to eat. This is not the type of crunch I want in my food! I'm not sure if the clams are usually like this or if it was an off day. I think if they can't get the clams clean they shouldn't have them on the menu... But again the marinade was really good so this has the potential to be a great dish. Xiao long bao - these were fine, nothing special. Quite sweet, especially the dipping sauce. I wouldn't go for these again. Overall there were some quality marinades and wontons but some misses as well. I'm down to come back and try some more dishes!
