COVID-19 OUTDOOR DINING
(Before 12/6/2020)
My heart broke when Bánh Cuốn Saigon closed and I saw that District Seven Kitchen, an upscale fusion restaurant was coming in its place.
In East Man Jose? In Vietnam Town?
Hmmm, not going to lie, I was leery because I make the drive from SF to Vietnam Town for cheap and delicious Vietnamese food that I can't find in SF (keyword: CHEAP). And, I'm sure others do too.
ALSO ME: *Pays $25 for 5 pieces of ravioli made for ants*
Well, actually....$37 when you include tax, tip, and delivery app service fees.
Some of us don't blink when it comes to paying $25 for a tiny plate of pasta but lose our sh*t when it comes to bowl of AZN noodles.
I appreciate a mom and pop restaurant like District Seven Kitchen bringing something different to Vietnam Town: elevated Vietnamese food made with fresh, high-quality ingredients with great service in a very hygienic, COVID safe dining environment.

While District Seven Kitchen advertises themselves as Asian fusion, I thought the food was more elevateD Vietnamese than fusion.
Small menu with Apps (rolls), Salads, Garlic Noodles, and Rice Plates. Vegetarian friendly. Beer and wine available.
Most dishes are in the teens and cap out at $22.95. While pricier than what you'll find in East Man Jose and in Vietnam Town, I thought the prices were in line with the quality of ingredients used.

* Gỏi Cuốn Cua Lột: Soft Shelled Crab Rolls ($14.95): https://bit.ly/2Kv4xv7
Fresh and delicious with great contrasting textures - crunchy soft shelled crab and a myriad of herbs, pickled veggies, and mango for a sweet tartness. The rice paper wrap was nicely chewy and not hard. The nuớc chấm was salty, sour, and sweet with just the enough fish funk. Get this!
* Chả Giò Rế Tôm Heo: Shrimp & Pork Crispy Rolls ($14.95): https://bit.ly/3oTz9p9
Made the traditional way with rice paper, the crispy rolls were shatteringly crispy and filled with a savory pork and shrimp mixture (minimal fillers). I made little wraps with the lettuce, coriander, and mint. Yes, it's a little pricey but you can taste the higher quality ingredients and the care that was put into it. Get this too!
* "Bà Mua" Garlic Noodles w/ grilled skirt steak, veggies ($18.95): https://bit.ly/385HQWP
The owner(s) are clearly taking customer feedback to heart. It seems like they beefed up their portions because there was an ample portion of garlic noodles and steak (~5 ounces).
The wheat noodles were deliciously buttery, garlicky, and chewy. The skirt steak was overcooked and mealy but they were kind enough to bring a rare skirt steak side on the side and were very apologetic about it. The rare steak (sorry, no pic) was tender and flavorful. I enjoyed the sprinkling of cheese, crispy shallots, and housemade hot sauce which tied everything together.
The garlic noodles are available with a variety of other proteins: chicken, pork chops, salmon, prawns, and lamb chops.
* Durian Tiramisu ($7): https://bit.ly/2LDRQPs
A must order for Durian lovers, I loved this Viet twist on a classic Italian dessert. Instead of espresso soaked lady fingers, they use a delicate sponge cake that's layered with fluffy whipped cream and fresh durian, then garnished with pirouette French vanilla cookies and blueberries. Subtly sweet, airy, creamy, and vanilla-y with that custardy durian funk.

Warm, friendly, and gracious. We were one of two tables during lunch and service was a little slow but we weren't in a rush. There was one server outside at all times and she was on-point with clearing empty plates and changing her gloves regularly.
The sweet owner checked in with us several times and the chef even came outside to say, Hi to TT and showed us pics of his late Pomeranian.

Modern and swanky with vibrant floral mural and a moss living wall in the indoor dining room. The outdoor patio was adorned with string lights, plants, succulents, and music playing which enhanced the outdoor dining atmosphere.
It takes A LOT of balls to open an upscale Vietnamese restaurant in Vietnam Town and even bigger balls in the midst of a pandemic. If you're looking to support a small business serving high-quality Vietnamese eats that also takes COVID safety precautions seriously, give District Seven Kitchen a try! 4.5 stars rounded up.
