Doc Chey's Noodle House - Review - Morningside - Atlanta - The Infatuation

"Doc Chey’s is so serious about noodles that even their salad options include them. So when we’re in the Virginia Highlands/Morningside area and in the mood to wrap ourselves in silky, doughy comfort, this Pan-Asian noodle house is our first choice. For a decent lo mein, we appreciate their formula with egg noodles and what seems like a pound of cabbage and carrots. On Thursdays the patio fills up with locals who know it’s curry day (a different curry with varying spice levels is featured each week). But every other day, we grab and go here because the large portions of fried rice and teriyaki-splashed udon noodles taste just as fresh in takeout containers and are enough for us to save for leftovers. photo credit: Amy Sinclair photo credit: Amy Sinclair" - Juli Horsford

I had the Marco Polo with all veggies and Thai Tea. It was absolutely delicious. The flavors just explode in your mouth like an amazing firework display. I’ve been eating here for years. Doc Chey’s never disappoints!

Google
Very friendly service but quite disappointing food. The soup was barely filled halfway. The noodles were hefty but only a hint of a few beef crumbs. Not impressed.

Google
First time trying Doc Chey! The food selection is good. You order up front at the cashier and then they bring it to you. I ordered the shrimp fried rice and added chicken - quite tasty! I also got the Brussel sprouts which had a great flavor! My mentor also got Brussel sprouts which she enjoyed, and the spring rolls. They have an outside covered patio and inside seating available. Friendly service.

My wife and I have eaten at Doc Chey’s many times. We have never been disappointed with the food or service. My wife says they always cook tofu perfectly. It is a somewhat spartan place but somehow it all works. The patio is our favorite place to dine. There is just something about Doc Chey’s that always satisfies us. Recommended!

Google
This place's food is an absolute showstopper. Located in a beautiful area (lots of cute shops and restaurants in the neighborhood), this place is spacious and has lots of seating to choose from. Service is incredibly kind and quick! After having the Spicy Thai Basil with Fried Tofu, I think my world's changed for the better - definitely coming back one day to have this again and to try other menu items.

We stopped by for a quick dinner on Saturday July 5th. It was not crowded, fast service, fair prices, and great service. We sat at the patio which surprisingly was not scorching hot, all the food we order tasted great. We highly recommend!

Google
My family as loved Doc Chey’s for many years. The food is delicious and fresh, and the staf is friendly. Our regular orders include the green bean, edamame, and Brussels sprout appetizers and the noodle and rice bowls.

A Morningside tradition where locals gather for good healthy food and comradary. So glad to be back in this area of Atlanta where there are so many amenities.

Yelp
This restaurant deserves all the hype! I got the Mongolian stir fry with tofu. It was delicious and I loved that there was such great meatless options :) The dining area was very calm and food came out fast. Great place for a casual meal with family, friends, or coworkers.

Yelp
No question at all- I would eat here again. I just ordered the wrong thing. My goal is to guide you so that you have the best experience. Next time I go I will order the Japanese Teriyaki Udon noodles, and the crispy Brussels sprouts - both were superlative. Our friends ordered the Brussels sprouts and kindly let me sample them- they were delicious, truly crispy (not greasy- if you love this appetizer as I do, you will understand the distinction. Fried brussels sprouts are showing up everywhere now - they even have them at the Chik-fil-a restaurant in Newnan!) I suspect most everything on the menu is good and fresh. But I made a classic mistake: I ordered a dish that I have perfected myself: spicy Thai basil noodles. Not a single Thai basil leaf graced my plate. I ordered it as "veggie" expecting an abundance of fresh vegetables, but the (beautifully cooked) vegetables were scarce. Bok choy was included in the description, but they were a rare find in my mound of noodles. There was a purée squiggle which I believe included Thai basil that I mixed into my dish, along with the bed of grated salad greens that accompanied our straight from the freezer to the frying pan Crispy Veggie Spring Rolls. The quality gap between them and the crispy Brussels sprouts was vast. Our friends, who live in the neighborhood, said that the woke-fired green beans were also a stand-out dish. The condiment selection on the table was excellent, including a seasoned salt/ sesame seeds blend, Sriracha, and soy sauce. I would also advise against the Pad Thai, as it looked remarkably like my Thai basil. Friendly staff, great vibe, excellent iced tea (unsweetened jasmine and slightly sweet black tea). Good budget choice, and great place to meet friends as you place your order at the counter, find a seat (outside or indoors) and your food is brought to your table promptly. When we finished, staff magically appeared with fortune cookies and an offer for a takeaway container. So, yes, I will return, no question. And I truly appreciate how vegan / vegetarian friendly it is!

Yelp
A delicious spot for Asian takeout with plenty of vegetarian options, the quality and value of Doc Chey's far exceeds its humble, fast-casual digs. I used to frequent their since-closed bowl-based location near Emory while in school, but hadn't been to their Morningside location in years. We stopped in for takeout on a weekday, and were so impressed that it has quickly been added to our list of neighborhood go-to's. Featuring lighter takes on the usually greasy takeout classics, Doc Chey's has plenty to choose from. First and foremost, this spot offers one of my favorite dishes that I find sort of hard to come by in Atlanta- summer rolls. Doc Chey's version are vegetarian and so refreshing, served with a sticky sweet and smokey Asian barbecue sauce. Just perfect. I paired that with an order of their delicious stir-fried green beans and excellent tofu lettuce wraps. She went old-school and tried their kids fried rice, which was tasty, huge, and an almost impossibly great value. An old classic that is now a new favorite.

Yelp
This place is right in Morningside in a shopping center with plenty of parking. It has a nice screened patio to enjoy your food! You order at the counter and your food is brought out to you! The staff is always smiling here! The food is good depending on what you get, I got a special the last time and have no clue what it was called but it was delicious! They also have beer and sake! If you're in morningside looking for a nice lil lunch, it's worth the try.

Yelp
Doc Chey's Szechuan Chicken Bowl is a delight for the taste buds! The tender chicken, perfectly seasoned with Szechuan spices, pairs harmoniously with the fresh vegetables and savory sauce. Each bite bursts with flavor, leaving you craving more. Whether you're a spice enthusiast or prefer milder flavors, this bowl offers the perfect balance of heat and taste. With generous portions and impeccable quality, it's a must-try for any Asian cuisine lover. The employees are also great, very social and helpful.

Yelp
I stopped by on a random Friday for lunch. The restaurant was basically empty. Perhaps maybe six people tops. I was greeted by a lovely hostess, who informed me of the specials and also check to see if my number was still in the system. It was! I ordered the special and the barbecue buns, which I really didn't like but oh no not to get those again. All my food was delivered fresh and hot. The restaurant was clean and relaxing. Happy to be back after being gone for two years living in Florida. The food here in Atlanta cannot be beat.

Yelp
I love their Thai coconut soup and Chinese Lo mien. They're located right across from Pure Barr class and have some very healthy food options for vegan, vegetarian and non vegetarian. It used to be my go to spot after the class when I lived around the area. It can be seen from regular traffic as it has an iconic Thai hut architecture. Their food is flavorful and umami. The service is fast, cozy, and the staff is friendly. They have indoor and outdoor seating. There is ample parking in the plaza and around the restaurant. They offer dine in, togo and delivery through most major apps.

Yelp
I ordered the shrimp rolls for starters-greasy, hollow and flavorless. I selected the Thai Basil with chicken-totally flavorless! The most bland, rubbery white chicken-no spices and I was SO not impressed! First and last time at this noodle house. The WORST!!!! AND.....to compound my disappointment , they do not accept cash! I hate supporting businesses that do not take American currency out of fear of being robbed, by staff or strangers. Ridiculous!
google avatar

Yelp
First off, the Thai Coconut Soup Cup. Imagine a cozy hug... in a cup. It's like your chicken got a PhD in deliciousness, teamed up with mushrooms and chili oil, and decided to go for a swim in a coconut chicken broth pool. It's a spoonful of heaven with a spicy kick that says, "Surprise!" Then, there's the Garlic Eggplant. This isn't your grandma's eggplant. This is wok-seared Japanese eggplant that went to culinary school. It's hanging out with red peppers, bok choy, and onions, all drenched in a sweet garlic sauce that'll make you forget your name. It's like a veggie party on a plate, and guess what? You're invited! Now, let's talk about the customer service. If there were a Customer Service Olympics, these folks would bring home the gold. They treated me so well, I almost asked if I could move in. In conclusion, if you haven't been to Doc Chey's, are you even living? It's a yes from me, and I'll be back faster than you can say "More Garlic Eggplant, please!" See you at the noodle house!

Yelp
We went in here for a casual office lunch. The service was quick. The ambience was perfect for the occasion. The food arrived promptly and it was delicious. I got the Japanese teriyaki udon. It was cooked to perfection and exactly what I expected. The green beans were very popular. Everyone seemed to enjoy them. My colleagues seemed to really enjoy their respective orders as well. They got the Mongolian, pad Thai, fried rice etc. It had its own parking space. Finding it was very easy. I will definitely revisit.
google avatar

Yelp
The food from here was extremely disappointing. The menu looked fun and figured it was worth a try but we ordered Pad Thai and received the wrong dish. We also ordered fresh rolls that didn't come with the sauce. Will not order from them again.

Fati L.

Yelp
This is my friends and I's spot for food. I've gotten different stir fries every time and they never disappoint. The service is great as well. Its not to tier but they are friendly. Its never crazy busy, its a good little spot to eat some good food and hang out with friends.

Yelp
The food is good. Not exactly what I was expecting. I was hoping for a more authentic taste. I ordered the generals chicken and Thai basil noodles. They weren't bad. Just not WOW. Nice atmosphere. Good place to have a conversation over your meal. Nice patio and casual environment. I tend to rate things more on a realistic 5-star scale, unlike other ratings. 5 star being "best ever." For that, this place is just ok. 3 stars.

Yelp
one of my favorite places to eat! i loved it when they were in athens and so sad when they closed, so i am so glad that i get to enjoy their food again!

Yelp
Popped in for a quick afternoon lunch. Service is fast. Food is fresh and delicious. Staff was attentive. Neighborhood vibes. Will return :)
google avatar

Yelp
Do not take cash and the outdoor dining is not pet friendly. I asked about both and told them no cash policy is unfair. I understand it's their business but this no cash practice is bs. I was asked to leave

Yelp
Always pleasing to dine here. This time we ordered and picked up. Our order was ready at the time promised. When we arrived home our order was correct and the portions were sizable. After some gentle rehearing our dinner was delicious. Pickup was quick and easy also.

Yelp
My husband and I have been huge fans of Doc Chey's for years. The food and service has always been top notch. Thanks to the owner Rich Chey and the amazing staff!

Yelp
An Atlanta tradition for decades! Always great food, I call it "comfort food"... Thank you for your consistency over the years!

G G.

Yelp
Their new location is out of the way for me but I can't go too long without their Garlic Eggplant stir fry. I highly recommend adding both shrimp and chicken to it.

Nancy S.

Yelp
My family has been eating here for at least 2 decades. The food is decent & convenient. However, since they instituted their 'no cash' policy we will no longer eat at Doc Chey's nor their other restaurants. Personally, we pretty much always pay with a credit card, so it doesn't affect us. But, a 'no cash' policy is discriminatory to people without the means to get credit cards. There are a lot of laborer's in our area that use cash for their meals. Oh well, very sad.
google avatar

Kamden R.

Yelp
Doc Chey's is my go-to for quick and tasty food. My kiddo loves the chicken lo mein and I always go with the Spicy Thai Basil noodle bowl with beef (extra pesto). Apps are always delicious, especially the edamame and lettuce wraps. They recently added street food options to the menu, like Bibimbap and street tacos that are also flavorful and consistently good! I'd you're feeling under the weather, get a big bowl of their coconut chicken soup. So good! The employees and always friendly and accommodating of special requests or food allergy concerns.
google avatar

Parnika B.

Yelp
We went there after appetizers at Whiskey Bird. The food was delicious and the servers were patient and kind. We ordered Wok fried rice and Black bean veggie noodles. The quantity was great and the price was so worth it! Recommend it!
google avatar

Earl S.

Yelp
I'm a fan. I checked in yesterday for dinner and ordered the Chicken Wok Fried Rice for dinner with the Shrimp Spring Rolls. The rice was good, hot, and I loved the sugar snap peas cooked in. There was so much that I had to save some for the following day. I don't remember having shrimp spring rolls before, but these were so delicious. I love the easy accessibility of their Morningside/Lenox location. There is ample parking, outdoor seating, and my food was ready and prepared at 6:54 p.m., per the app, for takeout, and they were right on time. Bravo!
google avatar

Angela B.

Yelp
Average fried rice which was a little pricey for the portion received. Bland taste so was the stir fry. The best thing I had was the pot of tea which was actually a styrofoam cup. I've found much better in this neighborhood. I actually saw a man return is half full bowl of soup for a better serving.
google avatar

Kyle S.

Yelp
I received a "welcome to the neighborhood" coupon from this place so of course had to try it. It's pretty good. They season their dishes pretty well. I had the Japanese Teriyaki Udon, General Chey's chicken, and the coconut soup. All were good and what I expected from an Asian fusion spot, which is what I would categorize this place by. Pretty oily, but expected and what I was craving. Their service is very quick too. Takeout took me about 15 minutes total. I ordered, went to go pick it up, and it was already ready. And they were busy too, so that tells me that they really get it.

Yelp
Found a dish I really like here: BiBimBap: korean beef, lettuce, kimchi & sunny-side up egg over rice, drizzled with korean bbq sauce, scallions and sesame seeds And maybe sometimes that's all you need! Discovered this dish about a year ago and have ordered it religiously ever since. I'm not going to say it's completely authentic, but the egg is always perfectly cooked, the vegetables are fresh and crunchy, and the beef is seasoned well. It's the closest-to-real bibimbap you'll get on this side of town, especially at an Asian fusion restaurant. I dined here recently with my coworker on a Friday for lunch, and the cashier was very friendly and so were the rest of the staff. We were checked on multiple times and they really made an effort to engage with customers. When not checking on guests, the staff were hard at work clearing tables. straightening out counter space, and keeping the restaurant clean, even with a full house. Thoroughly enjoyed my meal here, will come back for my midtown bibimbap fix!
google avatar

Clarke M.

Yelp
I've heard about Doc Chey's from my coworker who loves this place. Over the weekend my friend and I couldn't decide on where we wanted to go which is rare! Remembering my coworker tell me about this place. I was a little skeptical at first since it was Pride weekend in Atlanta and figured that all nice restaurants would probably be busy. However, when we walked in we were greeted immediately by the cashier and she helped us understand their process of ordering first and then having someone bring out your order. I decided to go with the chef's special after hearing the cashier tell me about it and my friend went with the Spicy Thai Basil. Overall, I thought the food was pretty good, I wish the special came with regular beef instead of ground beef and my friend thought the noodle were a bit greasy but had great flavor! We also had the spring rolls which were nice and crispy. Doc Chey's is a great hidden gem with a peaceful laidback atmosphere even in the city and they have free parking! We definitely will be coming back again!

Yelp
This food was sooooooo f*ckin good! I got the Coconut Soup & Teriyaki Noodles w/ vegetables. Ordered on Doordash, first of all fast service, got my order 30 mins early! The Coconut Soup was good, but not for me. But I knew that because I don't like Coconut but wanted to try something new. But it was still really tasty to me despite the fact, ended up giving it to my bf and he practically drank it down! The noodles were *chefs kiss* perfectly saucy and seasoned. You know how if you don't eat noodles right away the saucy isn't as saucy and the noodles get kinda weird? This didn't happen here, partially due to quality, partially due to supreme packaging because it wasn't even cold 45 min later (still nuked it in the microwave tho). GREAT PORTIONS! Def found a new spot, hoping they are consistent, will update if not!

Laura W.

Yelp
Modern yummy take on classic Asian cuisine. Order upfront, find a seat inside or on the covered patio, and food is delivered.
google avatar

Abbie A.

Yelp
Yum! Yum! Yum! Hits the spot every time. Inexpensive and good quality. No MSG and great options for adults and kids. Green beans are great as is the fried rice, lomein, Mongolian beef and chicken and broccoli. Favorite go to.
google avatar

Rodney W.

Yelp
Stopped by Doc Chey's for lunch and I must say, this place serves up some hella good grub. I ordered the Massamam curry daily special with chicken and it was awesome. The flavor of the curry was creamy with a tiny bit of spice. So I added some hot sauce and I loved every bite of it. It Was Delicious! The dumplings were excellent too! I'd love to eat here until I've tried everything on the menu. Love little shops like this! By the way, this is the first restaurant where I noticed the gender neutral restrooms. Now I can check, "Yes", on the incessant and irrelevant yelp question.
google avatar

Trish M.

Yelp
Love that it's just around the corner and they're on Uber Eats for times I don't want to leave the house. Total comfort food. Great decor and patio seating. Very comfortable and great for a one on one or group meal. Their food sales itself, never a bad meal! Today I ordered in. Arrived fast and fresh. To go packaging is perfect.

Yovel R.

Yelp
Disrespectful customer service. Went in as a Uber pick up and was disgusted by the way he treated me assuming I was a driver. I tried to remedy but he was more rude and disrespectful. I was going to order something for the office party but decided not to after picking up my order.
google avatar

Sinead K.

Yelp
The food is excellent and the the portions for the price are really great! We will be back again.
google avatar

Andrea M.

Yelp
The significant other and I ordered the Korean tacos (3 small tacos) for a quick to-go order. They were pretty okay, nothing too extraordinary to them. The kimchi and beef had that mildly sweetness to it, and the accompanying sauce made it slightly sweeter. The restaurant seemed spacious with its indoor and outdoor (covered patio) seats. The staff seemed friendly. Parking was a little tricky since there are only a few designated spaces for Doc Chey's and the rest was shared among the surrounding business.
google avatar

Jessica M.

Yelp
Yummm. Neighborhood favorite for the whole 22 years I've lived here. My kids have grown up eating here. My favorite is the coconut soup and spring rolls.
google avatar

jose n.

Yelp
The Thai coconut soup was terrible - tasted like packaged soup base but somehow without flavor. Why bother with it on the menu? The other dish we ordered was fine.
google avatar

Steen M.

Yelp
Great vegetarian options! They have some of my favorite fried rice in the city. I also appreciate how strict they are with COVID precautions! We usually do takeout so I can't speak to the experience of eating in the restaurant but pick up is always fast and easy!
google avatar

Lamont M.

Yelp
I have been eating here for YEARS!!! It's a local spot in the Highlands on the North End. The food is always very consistent. The services is always consistent and there is hardly ever a terribly long wait to be seated. They have a great large patio and inside is community seating!! I love community seating... It spices things up a little bit lol I always order either the Coconut Soup with No Chicken or the Lettuce Wraps with Tofu. Those lettuce wraps are Amaze Balls!!! I'm talking about so simple yet so darn yummy!!! My entire is always some mix of noodles with shrimp. Anything from Teriyaki, to Pad Thai, or Udon. Whatever I am in the mood for. They so do lots of carry out, so it's a good solid spot to oder take out from for Asian fare. Normally no issues finding parking and it's kinda nice sitting up on the hill away from all the noise on the street. This is the only location I have even visited and probably will ever visit. I'm pretty sure they have a couple more at least. It if it ain't broke, don't fix it lol. They will continue to see me off and on just like the last 19 years of patronizing this place

Lynda M.

Yelp
Great food and fun atmosphere. Love the patio and the people. Good neighborhood spot.

Yelp
I've been coming here for 20 years and never thought to leave a review. Sometimes we forget our regular places we go to. Anyway this is great for a fast meal, lunch dinner, or somewhere in between. Up until about 300p you order at the register and they bring it to your table. You get a little hanger with some soothing word on it so they know where to bring it. In the evening they take the order from the table. The food is pan Asian-not really any one kind of Asian. Id call it simple Asian blend. So you can aim at something that is more Chinese, or more Thai etc but its not totally any one kind of Asian food. You pay for the dish and then a small add on for chicken shrimp beef etc. The help is almost always non Asian and the cooks Mexican. That is ok with me as this is a Pan Asian restaurant. If it was a specific type of Asian and promoted as such, I would want the help to be the same specific nationality as the food. I know hoping the cooks are the same nationality is often expecting a lot. Dream on! The food is pretty regular here. If you like a dish, its going to be the same next time you order it. They have that down good. Overall the food its a bit better than average. Extra "points" for giving back to the community too. Doc Cheys is often promoting the Fire Dept and other community groups. I also like it that they long ago allowed their popular coconut chicken soup recipe to be printed in the paper. An extra plus for that! Many go here because they like that soup so much. Try it! Or google it and see if it still comes up! Karma card is a card you can give with value as a gift card, or you can store points on it for free meal and appetizers. Or both on the same card. You also can register your card and get a freebie or something on your birthday. Another plus!!

Yelp
I just moved to ATL and a friend recommended this place as the best pad Thai they've ever had. If you want pad Thai with pesto on it, then yes it is!! I got takeout which was ready super quickly. I honestly opened the box and was surprised to see the pesto and not taste as much of the peanut butter but somehow it worked? If you want something a little different, get the pad Thai. Also the serving size was gigantic. Way more than enough for a big dinner for two nights. I also got the veggie spring rolls and they were gigantic as well and absolutely so so delicious. The place was in a super cute little mall across from a bar too, and the people and outdoor seating was very cute.
google avatar

Ashley J.

Yelp
I definitely see how this place earns three-ish stars. All the food was good, not outstanding though. This is a place I would definitely order takeout from, and stop by for a casual meal if I lived in the neighborhood. The chicken coco soup had good flavor; however, some of the chicken had gristle and that drives me crazy! The summer rolls were actually excellent, and I would definitely order those again. Our noodle bowls came out piping hot; even after my husband was ready for the takeout container it was still steaming if you stirred the noodles around. The flavor was again, good, but not anything special. The portions were large, prices reasonable, and we had no problem finding a parking spot on a Friday night. Definitely a good place for a casual meal.

Bill E.

Yelp
The food is great! The service is just as good. Love supporting a local business. Always get to-go.

Yelp
Grabbed some takeout today and was not impressed. I had the coconut noodle soup and some spring rolls. I understand there are limits on how fresh takeout can be, but I sat down to eat within 15 minutes and was disappointed. Everything lacked flavor. The spring rolls were just greasy wrappers filled with tasteless fibers that I could not identify by taste... nor by sight, for that matter. I drowned them in dipping sauce and only tasted the sauce. I dipped them in soy sauce and saw no improvement. They tasted like nothing. Huge disappointment. The coconut soup started with fresh peppers, mushrooms, and green onions on top of noodles and unflavored (likely boiled) chicken. The broth was weak but still had that coconut vibe, so I dumped over the other ingredients hoping it would do its job. What resulted was a runny/chunky concoction that I could not bring to life with all the salt, pepper, sriracha, or soy sauce in the world. Nothing about this meal was good. Not going back.
google avatar

Allison M.

Yelp
Pretty great place for grabbing a nice lunch or dinner. Easy to please lots of people here. I went back the other day and I remembered why I liked it. 1. Parking is usually an ease. 2. Meals are about $10 and can make 2 meals. 3. Service is pretty good. 4. So long as I don't eat the entire pad thai, I feel like it was a pretty healthy meal. Love their pad thai, basil rolls, spring rolls and soup. Good, simple flavors.

Yelp
I'm not expecting to be worshiped because I'm a hospital worker, but I worked really hard this one night, stressful during the height of the crisis back in early April. My shift was over, I was exhausted and made a call to Doc Chey's to order carry out because I couldn't bring myself to cook a whole meal. I ordered Pad Thai, Mongolian Beef, and two coconut soup cups. The soup was okay, but the entrees were both so bland, incredibly bland. There was no sauce on the pad thai, it must have been pre-made, sitting around, inevitable the sauce absorbing into the rice noodles until it's dry mush. It was terrible, I literally had to put kikoman stirfry sauce over the noodles to make it edible. My BF was also disappointed with his Mongolian beef, saying it tasted nothing like he remembers, which is normally sweet and salty with soy sauce and brown sugar. I waited two months to post my review because I thought I would "get over it" but I'm not. Maybe it was just a rough shift for you guys, but I really felt spited that night by the lazy shortcuts your management is taking in this location. I'm posting this review because people need to know your management is making bad choices and they can't be trusting these 5 star reviews for takeout orders.
