The 13 Best Dim Sum Spots In Philly - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"When we think of this counter-service bakery in South Philly, the first thing that pops into our head is buns. No matter what situation we're in, we always walk in here, stare at something sweet behind the counter, and leave with five things we didn’t plan on ordering. Dodo Bakery closes at 6pm, so this is also a useful option if you want to pick up red bean buns later in the day." - candis mclean, alison kessler

The Best Bakeries In Philadelphia

"When we get the urge to eat Chinese buns and mooncakes, this bakery in South Philly pops into our heads. No matter what situation we're in, we always walk in here, stare ferociously at the red bean buns, lotus moon cakes with salted egg yolks, and golden egg tarts behind the counter, and leave with five things we didn’t plan on ordering. Dodo Bakery closes at 6pm, so this is also a useful option if you want to pick up something later in the day." - candis mclean, alison kessler

Philly’s Best Chinese Restaurants | Eater Philly

"Husband and wife Jack and Cherry Wong opened this adorable, sky-blue bakery on Oregon Avenue in South Philly in 2021. Dodo Bakery bombards the senses with Hong Kong-style pastries such as crunchy sugar-topped pineapple buns, bruleed Portuguese egg tarts, crispy red bean cakes, and mini chicken pies with glossy, hatch-marked puff pastry crusts. Keep an eye out for the durian mooncake during the Mid-Autumn Festival." - Diana Lu

I got delivery of treats from this bakery before and enjoyed both the food and drinks I got before. I decided to order a birthday cake from them this year and it was a fantastic decision. The staff were very accommodating and communicative and accommodating with the limits of the shop. The strawberry frosting is light and fluffy with bursts of pleasant tanginess throughout. The chocolate cake has a satisfying texture and is easy to slice even after being frozen. Both have a mild sweetness and allow the other flavors to shine alongside it. I'm looking forward to the next special cake day I can order from them again!

Google
Decent selection of items. It's a small but cute shop. You have to tell them what you want and they'll grab it for you. Bakery is a bit more expensive than Chinatown but not bad.

Google
Quaint little asian style bakery with a variety of different baked goods to take to go. Their prices were also fairly affordable. I ordered the coconut cream bun, an egg tart, and a pandan tart. The coconut bun was soft and the cream was tasty. It also had a pleasant coconut flavor that wasn't overwhelming. The tarts were good, but I preferred their pandan tart to the egg tart. I've just had egg tarts I have enjoyed more from other places. The pandan tart just had a really nice flavor to it that I liked. Both of the tarts were also super flakey! As for parking, I went during the weekday morning and found parking was quite easy along the streets. It wasn't a super crowded area that's jam packed with people so you should be able to find parking within a few blocks based on my experience.

Google
This bakery is my go-to for fresh pastries and bubble tea that never disappoint. Everything tastes homemade and the staff always greet you with a smile. Love grabbing a treat and relaxing in their cozy space.

I have ordered for pickup twice so far and I'm already dreaming about my next order! I like to order online so I can carefully select my items and so I can try a few new things every time - my social anxiety keeps me from stopping in to places I'd like to try, so I am glad that I could make some online orders to start. It's also super convenient to just stop by and pick up a little snack while running errands. The food has all been so good (Spam Musubi is always my favorite)

Google
No amount of words can explain how much I love this place. Me and my friends usually get boba here and let me tell you, it's spot on. The prices are good overall if your broke, the drinks taste like heaven. It's not chunky, mushy, to sweet or to bland, it's just perfect. I also love how convenient it is. It's close to my school, so when your thirsty you can just walk a block and order something. It's so good that even on rainy day's and storms, id still wanna go. This place is literally my holy Grail and I swear bro, if this place shuts down I'm gonna crash out. This place is my go to because the place and people/ workers don't give a mean scary feel to the experience. They don't rush you and overall there super duper nice! 😛😛😋

Google
Amazing bakery in South Philly! Really well-priced items and a good spread of savory and sweet options. Definitely stop by. The steamed (or baked) pork buns are super good.

Yelp
If you want a good zongzi in south Philly, you can grab one here. It's warm, good amount of red beans, peanuts, and pork belly. If you want the buns, the recommend coming here in the morning because at the end of the day they are drier. Three percent fee if you pay with card

Yelp
What a cute find. Lovely little bakery with tons of traditional Asian options (buns, custards, etc.). Mix of savory and sweet. We ended up getting a LOT of things as we had so much trouble deciding between everything and everything was so cheap! Some were better than others but definitely glad we got a nice array. They also sell bubble tea but we opted to skip this this time.

Yelp
Went a few minutes before closing so they were out of most things. Coconut bun was really good, but as it was closing time, it was a little cold for my liking. Would taste really good fresh and warm. I guess it would be best to visit them in the morning hours. Highly recommend the Panda sponge cake sandwich - so soft and airy!! Like the coconut bun, it was not overfilled, had a mellow flavor and was only mildly sweet. The Hong Kong style milk tea was okay.

Yelp
I've been wanting to stop by this place after first trying a custom pandan cake from them at a Lunar New Year event earlier this year. It was oh so light and not too sweet, of course, so I assumed their other offerings would be just as good. I wasn't wrong! I came in on Sunday to get a pineapple custard bun (my fave Asian pastry!), pineapple coconut bun, egg tart, and strawberry sponge cake. I also paid for a durian pastry, which wasn't in the bag when I left, but after messaging the store, they offered to make sure I get one next time! Anyway, the pastries I did get were all excellent. Soft and creamy and crisp and flaky exactly where you'd want them to be. I need to get a lot more than one of each next time haha. The surprise standout to me was actually the strawberry sponge cake, which was dense but fluffy with ample cream. It was so perfect with a few sips of coffee! Given the variety of things that I tried, I'm confident that Dodo doesn't miss. Their store and branding is super cute, too. Can't wait to go back and try more things!

Yelp
Dodo bakery is a good addition to the south philly neighborhood for when you're craving Chinese/ Hong Kong style bread but doesn't want to go all the way to Chinatown. My favorite are the floss roll, the chicken sandwich and the sesame balls. Floss roll; the mayo (what I assume to be mayo) adds moisture to the bread and the floss roll balance the sweetness of the dough. Chicken in the bread is cooked well and vegetables always looks fresh; combining with the bread it comes with a good flavor profile. Sesame balls, I just like them. Sometimes the skin can be a bit too thick but it's still pretty good. I find their bread profile to be a bit too sweet sometimes that I find myself leaning toward their savory selections. I've purchased from them a few times and I have to say they seem to keep on improving themselves in term of their flavor, selections and service. Their first week of opening I didn't want to go back but I'm glad that I did. Overall, with their large selections of buns and drinks, there bound to be something you would like when you visit.

Yelp
They have an amazingly large menu for such a small low key place. One of my favorite bakeries in Philly!

Yelp
It was pretty full when I got there because school just ended, but I got a matcha latte with aloe (it was a last min. topic decision because they ran out of tapioca pearls that day) and my friend got a strawberry milk tea. Both were great, and the server genuinely seemed like a nice guy. We also got a pineapple bun and butter cookies (they were kinda pricey) and they were rlly good! I'll definitely come again to try a few more of their drink options.

Yelp
I stopped by the other day because the sign was too cute to pass by plus an Asian bakery on Oregon avenue in Philly ! Yes lemme see what they got! It's small but cute inside. Coffee was good. The two women behind counter were nice and u formative and helpful. If you want to try something new and different go here and give it a try. They have some unique stuff to try. I will definitely Turku try again when I'm in Philly.

Yelp
First let me start off by saying the nicest people work there. They told me if I wanted any egg custard tarts, I can call early that morning and pick it up in the afternoon. So I ordered their famous pandam tarts that sell out every morning because no one else makes these and thought it would be a unique Thanksgiving dessert. Everyone thought they were good but that it tasted like a regular dan tat (egg custard tart). There was not a bit of pandam flavor at all! It was very disappointing since we all love pandam. Maybe it was just a fluke. I hope because I like to support local businesses.

Yelp
I have an obsession with pineapple buns that goes way back, and the pineapple buns here are my favorite in the city! I can't go anywhere else anymore and be satisfied. Although I'm unable to compare with any elsewhere, I have been particularly blown away by their sesame rice balls with bean paste filling. The rice dough is deep fried with a nutty savory flavor or the sesames and balanced with a savory sweet filling. They are extra super when they are fresh and served warm. They even have two types of custard cups, cookie and puff pastry. I prefer the cookie crust. I have tried many of their other options but there are my go-to's!

Leslie B.

Yelp
Dodo is such a gem. We stopped by to grab some pastries on the way to an Easter brunch, and everything was a hit! I'm so happy to have a sweet little place like this in the neighborhood. I'm ashamed to say we took way too long to try it out, and I don't know why. Maybe because Frangelli's is right there? Thankfully Dodo's business hours coincide with my lack of planning ahead, because whenever I try to do a quick run by Frangelli's (like this morning), they're closed. This place has a very different vibe, and both are great. Highly recommend.

Yelp
This place was nice. Parking is next to impossible. I ordered a matcha milk tea with regular sugar which was fairly sweet, even for me (self-proclaimed sweet tooth) but you can ask for half the sugar or even unsweetened. The pastries are 1-3 dollars so I got a bunch with red bean, taro, sweet cream - all were delicious. It is a small place so you might have to wait. I would return.

Yelp
Love that there is an Asian bakery in South Philly! Everything made fresh and usually sold out by the end of the day! They are currently selling mooncakes for the Mid Autumn season. My favorite is the BBQ pork bun, the Chinese tamales (joong in Cantonese), egg tarts, the red bean cakes, almond cookies, and lychee smoothie. The staff there are so friendly. Saves me a trip to Chinatown as well
google avatar

Mary S.

Yelp
It was okay. Pricier than Chinatown and parking was pretty difficult. However if you're looking for Asian buns then this is a good substitute if you didn't want to make the trip into downtown. I say it was a C+ experience for me. I went around 3pm Sunday so maybe if you go when the buns are fresher it may be different but overall it was ok.
google avatar

Jen L.

Yelp
Came here to pick up a bag of breads and pastries last weekend. Store was pretty empty by the time I came (around 5:30) so come early! I got - 4 pandan egg tarts - 1 ham and egg bun - 1 snow mountain bun - 1 butter and sugar bun Unfortunately, the ham and egg bun was moldy so I can't comment on the taste. The other two buns were pretty dry and flavorless. The butter and sugar bun had a super light sugar glaze and I think butter slivers inside and the snow mountain bun had a slight sugary crust on top. Both bread portions were very dry. The egg tarts were okay but the custard part was more jello like in consistency and more sugary than I was used to. The crust was also not flaky pastry crust but a cookie crust (just as a headsup!) service was super friendly, but would probably go back to the Asian bakeries in Chinatown instead.
google avatar

Aimy T.

Yelp
Legit Asian bakery and nicest people. I'd never seen a pandan egg custard tart before and I loved it. They do a solid cocktail bun. You can't go wrong, I've never had anything bad here. When I had COVID I ordered some buns and boba for delivery and it came quick and fresh. You can also find a selection of their buns at First Oriental Market, near the checkout line. They do custom cakes but make sure you fill out a form in advance- they need a couple weeks notice!
google avatar

Renee C.

Yelp
So crazy to spend $13 on just one single Durian mooncake. I saw it on the little red book (A Chinese software), which stated that HANDMADE mooncakes are selling on Doordash and a box contained four mooncakes. However, on their instagram, it stated that INDIVIDUAL mooncakes are selling on Doordash and to order a box of four needed to order through the link in their bio. I am not sure the discrepancy is simply resulted from translation, which I highly doubt since the other parts were translated perfectly accurately. It is so annoying to be fooled because you just spoke the same kind of language with the seller! All in all, $13 for one simple small mooncake. To the seller's response: you could totally spend hours and hours to make a mooncake full of artificial durian flavor as you wish. Personally, I choose to not spend 13 on it.
google avatar

Emma F.

Yelp
Cutest little bakery with consistent and delicious treats! I haven't had anything bad yet, would definitely recommend the pineapple custard bun and the curry chicken bun for something savory. I'll always appreciate the service as well, friendly and helpful!
google avatar

Shu Ying L.

Yelp
DoDo Bakery has the best chicken pies in town. My mom, who is from Hong Kong, said the chicken pies here taste just like the ones she had when she was a kid in HK. That's it for my review. I'm gonna go order more chicken pies now.
google avatar

Ajay B.

Yelp
The place has arguably one of the best milk teas in the city. Their desserts are pretty incredible as well. Call ahead to make sure they have bubbles if you want that in your milk tea, because they run out of boba. Mango milk tea, highly recommend.

Yelp
I came around 10:15 am in the morning and everything was fresh and yummy. My boyfriend doesn't like carb too much but he always down to eat dodo breads. We absolutely love the pizza bread and you really can't go wrong with the cream bun. Next time we will definitely try the ham&cheese and the chicken sandwhich
google avatar

Mai F.

Yelp
A cute bakery with yummy snacks and milk tea. My family and I visited the first time about a week ago and enjoyed our choices immensely. I recommend the char siu bun, sticky rice dumpling, and taro milk tea, and my parents loved the cream buns.

Jennifer L.

Yelp
Cute bakery and tasty moon cakes! Purchased the white lotus and red bean varieties. Worth the trip from Center City.

Yelp
This Asian bakery is legit, especially considering it's all the way down by Oregon Ave in South Philly in the middle of nowhere. In comparison you'd need to go to the Chinatown bakery so glad there is a DoDo here. I've had a lot of Asian bakeries from here and back in nyc so I can judge(I hope). Their bread is pretty authenticate, I got the pineapple bread(not actual pineapple bread but shaped like one), the custard bread, corn bread, pork floss bread and milky cream cheese bread? The price is a little bit higher $2 now each vs probably $1.5-$2 in Chinatown but I don't blame them their bread sizes are bigger and more filled. I like the crust and texture of the breads, honestly I've never been a fan of KC bread but DoDo bread seems more natural in taste. I still think my favorite bakery is Mayflower in Chinatown since the breads almost always come out hot and flaky. Went to DoDo in the morning and bread didn't seem to be hot or anything so maybe it was made a while ago, would be great for hotter/smaller batches but I don't blame them with the lack of foot traffic in area. Overall go support them in the local Philly community! Would recommend highly, just wish they offered milk/raisin loafs and pork and cabbage buns!
google avatar

Yelp
Their pastries are really good. Especially the pork Chashu bun. The cakes are good. Not too sweet for me. Service is amazing and drinks are good as well

Yelp
While having a lazy Saturday afternoon & watching a Netflix baking show, I found myself craving pastries. Dodo Bakery opened only a few blocks from my home months ago & I'd been meaning to give it a try. I peeled myself off the couch, walked down, & the moment I opened the door to the tiny bakery I was greeted by a delicious buffet of baked good choices. It was so hard to pick, but I chose a bag of steamed pork buns, a sweet lemon coconut pastry, & a savory breakfast-style pastry to enjoy on my Sunday morning. The pork buns are huge! The lemon coconut bun was so tasty & satisfied my craving for sweets. Thank you, Dodo Bakery! It's so wonderful to have you in the neighborhood.

Yelp
Highly recommend. Had the pineapple and the pork floss bun. So delicious. Employees were nice too. Cute new place in south philly
google avatar

Lauren S.

Yelp
I'm so excited to have found this nearby! The storefront is bright and cute. The pastry is fresh and delicious - we especially liked the snowy mountain pork bun and the red bean and egg yolk puffs. They were out of boba when we arrived close to closing, but I will definitely be back soon.
google avatar

Toki R.

Yelp
We went here to pick up pastries for ourselves and a few neighbors on our black block because they were one of the few shops open early on Sunday. We really enjoyed the raisin roll, the small custard pies, the pineapple and custard roll, and the roll with hotdogs (like a sweet hotdog donut!). The prices were very reasonable and the pastries were light and delicious. I highly recommend this place! It is a great addition to South Philly.

Lena L.

Yelp
I'm so glad I found this place... the treats are all so yummy and not loaded with a lot of sugar. So many things in what my Dr. said I could not have and surprising that the goodies here r just what he ordered, well, pretty much most of them lol The people are very sweet but not their treats ... Love it!!!

Christine W.

Yelp
Love Do Do Bakery! I had been ordering Do Do Bakery for my company events many time. Highly recommended! All bakeries that I ordered every time, people will give lot of compliments. Fresh and tasty, truly Hong Kong style. I started to order large orders from Do Do bakeries since summer time. The bakeries were fresh and never had any problem. Excellent customer service! When I saw someone leave a bad comment, I believed this person had no comment sense. If you don't place the Ham and egg bun in the fridge for a couple of days of course it will turn bad. The other items I had tried before, they are tasty and good quality. Not as that person mentioned. I did browsing all different websites, people rated five stars! I only shop with confidential and good food for my clients. So far Do Do Bakery is the best bakery in Philadelphia. I will rate 10 stars !

Lady H.

Yelp
I liked the egg tart and pandan cake; they were delicious. I'll return and try another the next time

Yelp
Buns, bubble tea, birthday cake, smoothies and more! The absolute best and cutest bakery. Parking was easy and the ambiance was so cozy and welcoming. The food is amazing, especially the buns!

Yelp
I loveeee Dodo Bakery! The shop is so cute and the parking was convenient. My fave things to order are the taro milk, the hotdog buns, and the almond cookies. I always end up getting the roast pork buns too have having them every day for breakfast!

Jasmin C.

Yelp
Their pastries and beverages never disappoints me. Always fresh. My new favorite boba/ pastry shop in Philly

Joseph R.

Yelp
I've been to this bakery pretty consistently since the week it opened and have been impressed by the selection and quality of the food, which keeps on improving. I am addicted to their pork buns, but their new hot items are delicious and always freshly made. If you're driving down Oregon ave, I highly recommend a stop here.

Rachel H.

Yelp
My boyfriend sent me a delivery of buns for my birthday. It was so touching and special to receive the package from DoDo bakery since he knows how much I love Asian bakeries. I especially enjoy the coconut and pineapple buns. I am looking forward to going with him to get more treats in the future together...

Dana P.

Yelp
It's on my way to just about everywhere. My first time there, I got one of a lot of things. I was happy with the freshness, taste, and presentation. I hate when I'm late into Chinatown and they are sold out of my favs, so this is great. Quality and convenience! I'll visit regularly.

Krissy H.

Yelp
This place got the best milk bread in the world I also tried the Bogo from there it was the best to

Amy L.

Yelp
My favorite family-owned Hong Kong style bakery! I love stopping by to pick up buns after work. They always use the freshest ingredients and they have a great variety! I love getting the pandan egg tarts (which no other Philadelphia Hong Kong style bakery has). I also love how they have a different variety of buns made fresh daily. They make great drinks as well! I've tried their fruit teas, matcha, and smoothies and they were all perfectly made. I highly recommend this bakery to everyone! The staff members are also very friendly and they make sure you are well taken care of. I could not say enough good things about this bakery. Best baked goods without having to drive to Chinatown and they even taste better! I follow them on Instagram and keep up to date with what they have for that day.
