There is an abundance of affordable, creative options at Dog Ears, something unique for a local coffee shop. I recommend the bacon egg and cheese on the buff jalapeno cheddar bagel, and thought they had a pretty delicious iced coffee. They also have reliable Internet and a pretty quiet vibe, especially with the bookstore in the back. More importantly than all of this, though, Dog Ears runs an annual free literacy summer camp and it was a rewarding, fun activity for our two daughters. They had fun every single day and were so excited to share everything they learned. So grateful for this service to our community and I hope we can participate every year!

Google
Dog Ears has a sweet vibe. The space is comfortable, and it feels like a nice spot to sit for a bit or meet up with a friend. I didn’t end up getting anything since they didn’t have gluten-free or organic options, which was a little disappointing. Still, I appreciated the atmosphere.

Google
One of Buffalo's independent bookstores, and the only not for profit, the drinks, food and atmosphere are all absolutely wonderful. One of my favorite places in the city!

Google
It's okay. The sandwich I had was good. The drink I had was okay. The bookstore aspect was cool. However, I wanted to order a latte but after working as a barista in the past, I couldn't get over the caked on milk on the steam wands. And I watched her pull a shot, it was an extremely short shot, then she poured a little water in it and served it. No thanks. If they got help on the Cafe aspect this place would be an easy 5 stars. The food was good (though there was something on the menu I asked for she said they don't even carry anymore). The prices are really good. The bookstore was cool. The Cafe left much to be desired.

I really would like to love Dog Ears, but it is just far too dirty for me to feel comfortable dining there. There are dead flies in the window sill, the floor is dirty, tables are not wiped clean, and there is so much clutter all around (i.e. flyers and signs). I write this review not to be discouraging, but to offer some constructive feedback to the owner. It is a South Buffalo staple and could really shine with a bit of elbow grease.

Just absolutely wonderful setting and good food, drinks and more! Check out the children’s little library. Delightful!

Yelp
I visited for a stamp on my Buffalo Bookstore Passport as part of Independent Bookstore Week. This is one of my favorites so far! The cafe has interesting sandwich and panini options - both that I tried were top-tier and I would happily order them again (Turkey Club and Charles Dickens Panini). They also have an inspiration board for coffees, and I got a Butterscotch Latte. The coffee flavor options is a HUGE list. If you can think of it, they probably have it. It tastes like an extra dark-roast espresso that's used in the lattes. We also got chips and a cookie (especially tasty). My only complaint on the food is that it took quite a while to make; if you're planning on hanging out for a while anyway then maybe that's not a big deal. There are several areas with tables and chairs, free wi-fi, and plenty of great books of course. Hanging out and spending time reading seems encouraged. This is a not-for-profit that supports kids reading programs so any money you spend here goes toward that excellent purpose. Don't miss going up the metal spiral staircase with book quotes on each step. Come back down the other stairs to see a huge beautiful mural full of beloved children's book characters. General stuff: Parking was a bit challenging since there is currently construction in front of the store, but we were able to find a spot in the nearby neighborhood. All the staff was very friendly and helpful, and they clearly love books; it's wonderful to be near book people! There are at least two restrooms that I noticed (all-gender).

Yelp
Excellent food and service! Fun menu options. Loved the Loganberry Italian Soda & Great Expectations panini!! Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
A hidden cozy hipster cafe with a bookstore & seating. This place is very cute and the people that work there are welcoming. Their breakfast/lunch food looked and smelled really good. It was a good place for me to work on my laptop without feeling overstimulated, it would also be a great place to just escape & read a book.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a 501(c)3 non-profit; surplus monies go to local charities. All staff are volunteers; the cafe has a wide selection of food and beverages. Any book can be ordered; great place to get a coffee and hang.

Yelp
Awesome place, very cozy and well decorated and put together atmosphere. A perfect local gem if you're looking for a quiet, chill vibe or a nice coffee or tea and for food they whip up a variety of different breakfast items. My girlfriend and I decided to stop in last November while watching a friends apartment while he was away. And we ended up coming back 2 more times after our initial visit. We got an iced coffee and a breakfast sandwich that consisted of an everything bagel(toasted) with scrambled egg and bacon and cream cheese. Would recommend !

Yelp
This is by far the best coffee shop in the Buffalo area. As soon as you walk in it feels warm and inviting, like coming home from a long vacation. Ordering coffee was easy and the barista was friendly. I ordered the Iced campfire latte and it was phenomenal. I wish I ordered food cause I heard great things (I plan on doing so next time). After I got my coffee I walked around a bit and entered the bookstore. I was greeted by Eileen who is a national treasure whom I'll protect at all costs. She gave me a tour, explained how they are a nonprofit to put on programs and help local organizations in Buffalo. They have a wide selection of books, including a kids section and local authors. They even do local author signing events. I honestly wish I lived in southtowns just to become a regular here cause I'd be there everyday. It's well worth the drive for me and I will absolutely go again. If the owner or anyone who works there reads this- please keep doing what you're doing, I haven't experienced such a warm greeting from a place in so long I forgot they existed.

Yelp
What a family, friendly neighborhood business! Café orders come out rather quickly with good portion sizes . My daughter has attended tutoring and summer programs there & staff are nothing but professional!

Yelp
First time visiting and worth the drive. I had the turkey bacon sandwich and it was DELICIOUS and so freshly made. KUDOS to everyone who works there.

Yelp
Cute little cafe. The people behind the counter were very friendly. The food is simple but very good. There is a nice little bookstore in the back. The people in store were friendly and helpful. They explained the bookstore and helped us find books. Se will definitely go back?

Richard S.

Yelp
shop/bookstore! It's the perfect blend of cozy ambiance and literary delight. The moment you walk in, you're greeted by the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the sight of shelves lined with an impressive selection of books. The staff are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. Visiting from Texas and the owner gave me some solid suggestions on places to check out. It's clear they have a passion for what they do, which adds to the overall welcoming atmosphere.

Yelp
Stopped in last weekend for a breakfast sammy - the egg sandwich to be exact - and as always it was freaking delish. It isn't always consistent with the ingredients because it looks like there are a lot of younger kids that work there but its usually pretty good. The weekend before I order this and it was WAY over salted to the point that I couldn't finish my sandwich so I hope that doesn't happen again. I love that it comes with fresh fruit, but the type does vary. They have a lot of specialty drinks available each month and offer lots of free programs for kids and seniors.

Yelp
A oasis for book lovers and caffeine seekers, and a refreshing sandwich menu The bookstore has a great inventory of local talent

Yelp
Tried this place for the first time today and loved it! The food is great and is made fresh to order. They sell books and candles. You can also bring your dog in with you to order if you want and sit in the outside patio. Lots of flavors for lattes and they had fresh baked goods too. Definitely will be back!

Yelp
This little coffee shop/bookstore had rave reviews and decided to meet my friend for early lunch last week when she was off. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, even though it may have changed owners over the years it still remains a staple in the South Buffalo area. The staff were extremely friendly, the tables were marked off to abide by the COVID 19 guidelines, hand sanitizer was found on the table and your food was brought to you. My friend order the Charles Dickens, and I ordered the Jungle. I've always been a fan of paninis from local places and this sure didn't disappoint. Loved the mix of fresh chicken, goat cheese, sun dried tomato, roasted pepper and asparagus. In the back of the store is there is a hidden jem of a spiral staircase, and a bookstore that showcases local authors . The store has even a children section, local authors and something other interesting finds.

Yelp
I've been here a couple times now with different folks and each time I'm pleased with the cozy atmosphere, the vegetarian options (though a quick reference like a symbol beside the menu item wouldn't hurt), and the welcoming, friendly staff! Always nice to support a local bookstore too (check out the local authors section and the photography on the walls)

Jared S.

Yelp
Awesome environment, happy friendly staff. Best bacon egg and cheese bagel since being in NYC. You should go!

Yelp
A great place to study & read, the food was good it's a non-profit bookstore. Also the bookstore offers activities for kids through out the week. Also they offer a space to rent out upstairs I definitely will stop by here again to enjoy some lunch... oh yeah I eat a salad it was delicious and a sandwich....

Linda T.

Yelp
Awesome neighborhood coffee shop and bookstore. Coffee and their large peanut butter and oatmeal cookies are just to die for! They also serve other baked goods, salads sandwiches and wraps. The bookstore has a variety of books to select from. They do have seating inside and a few tables outside. If you haven't been here yet, you must stop in and check out this cozy little shop!

Yelp
Service was incredible! My mom and I enjoyed the quaint atmosphere and felt comfortable while visiting. It was conveniently located close by Mercy Hospital. The coffee, cocoa and our hummus plate were all tasty. We will definitely be back in the future!

Yelp
I am very biased in giving them 5 stars. I have been going here for years. They are my favorite hangover breakfast spot because it's usually pretty quiet and it's more of a takeout spot than anything. Their food is pretty good--I've had breakfast, paninis, desserts, and more. They have a decent set of coffee options that matches public espresso, spot, intersection, etc. But they give off a community vibe and do make their drinks with love. They aren't perfect, often the baristas are very new, but given that and the scale of business they do, they are at the level they should be. The Cafe exists to fund the bookstore and community programming they have, which raises the rating for me. It's an amazing idea and I love seeing this type of thing locally--we need more places like this in Erie County. They also sell books, coffee for home, and gifts. If you haven't been here, check them out!

Yelp
What a great little place! The staff were amazing and the food delicious! The building is split into 1/2 bookstore (in the back and left side) and cafe in the front with sitting on the first floor. The bookstore has many community outreach events (ask to go upstairs - so cute). Nice people, nice place, great coffee- we'll be back !

Yelp
Love! Love! Love this place! So cute, so cozy! The food is AMAZING! I recommend any of the paninis. (My favorite is the Monte Cristo). They have excellent breakfast sandwiches. All menu items are made right on spot with delicious, fresh ingredients. Hot and ready to go very quickly. I love the smoothies here. The coffees are fabulous. They offer homemade, fresh baked goods daily. But this place is really about the bookstore. You can come and spend some time perusing through the qauint offerings while your breakfast or lunch is being prepared. They offer tables and chairs so you can sit and enjoy a coffee and a good read. Do yourself a favor and come here to see for yourself. You will not be disappointed!

Yelp
This place is a fine addition to South Buffalo. It's nice to have a relaxing hip cafe close to home without having to drive into the city. The staff is very nice and welcoming. This is a perfect spot for some relaxing reading while drinking a nice coffee. I also usually order some of their breakfast options like wraps and sandwiches. The food was good and prepared with care & detail. It always looks tasty. They also serve lunch & dinner type items but I haven't tried those yet. Parking is on the street but finding a spot isn't difficult. They have a nice bookstore as well but I have not used those services yet. I look forward to going back.

Yelp
such a cute place! the staff is very friendly and sweet, and i love the selection of books and the kids area. i like how they promote local musicians in their little cd area. the space is cozy enough that it feels natural to talk to other patrons in the dining area. plus, my chai latter was delicious

Yelp
Came in Saturday late in the morning about 10:40. Ordered three sandwiches - breakfast wrap, panini and roast beef sandwich and it not only took over an hour to get, an entire sandwich was forgotten. They may have had orders before us but the restaurant was empty or already served so not sure what that was about. Portions were small but my friends liked their meals. Won't return for food again.

Yelp
What a beautiful day to enjoy a trip to the neighborhood cafe. I've gone here for years and there has never had a bad experience. I've enjoyed their renovations to make the space bigger, brighter and more enjoyable for customers. Here, you can find funky furniture and games like boggle to enjoy with your company. You can't go wrong visiting a book store AND cafe! This place is usually really nice and quick which is why I chose it for breakfast on the go. There was a event near this location this afternoon so I do take that into consideration for my experience today. When I arrived at 10:20, there were people already waiting for their stuff but because I will always choose a local business over a TIMS any-day, I stayed in line. I order two lattes and two breakfast sandwiches. I waited about ten minutes for my order to be taken and then I waited about ten more minutes for my lattes to surface. I was handed my two breakfast sandwiches at 10:55. I stood there for 35 minutes waiting for my complete order. Once I got into the car and checked my order, the drinks were disgusting. They tasted like iced milk and I attached a photo to show their irregularity. My girlfriends sandwich seemed to be fine but my wrap was so covered in siracha, I couldn't even finish it because my mouth burned like a Hawaiian volcano. The atmosphere is great but I guess consistency in their hand made products is questionable. * I also wanted to note that it was REALLY dusty and dirty in there. The light fixtures and walls were caked with dust. Items for sale and decor were dusty and the book shelves were as well.

Yelp
Amazing sandwiches !! I have not had the opportunity to go inside and eat but have had many takeout sandwiches from Dog Ears Cafe and will definitely have many more in the future. Got to try these out ! Delicious!

Yelp
We're in from out of town and stumbled upon this place because of the name. We got a sandwich and a wrap. Both came with fresh salads and were delicious. We played trivial pursuit (Kevin won) and then got a delicious chai latte and smoothie. We made sure to buy a book on the way out. This place donates all profits to literacy programs for children. How can you not get behind that?? The two servers behind the counter were phenomenal. Super friendly and helpful. I highly recommend. Especially the dirty chai latte, one shot of espresso.

Yelp
Went there last night to grab a coffee and a light bite to eat and boy was I impressed. I have been there several years ago (under different management, I assume) and it was quaint but tiny with a limited menu. Now there is more seating, a vast menu of options for coffee, breakfast, sandwiches/salads and baked goods and even the book store seems larger. My panini (chicken breast, goat cheese, tomato pesto, asparagus ,and roasted red peppers on grilled sourdough) was super satisfying and only $7.50 (included field greens on the side) My orange spiced iced latte was refreshing and full of flavor. Atmosphere was warm and cozy and not too loud, staff was professional and friendly. I'm going to have to stop here more often for some relaxation time and high quality coffeehouse treats!

Yelp
Very neat cafe and bookstore with various little books and places to seat. Quirky atmosphere and yummy food!

Summer B.

Yelp
There was a very small selection of books. However it has a wonderful mission and the place was clean and cute! Just not what I was expecting for a book store!

William M. S.

Yelp
I've stopped here a few times while out on morning bike rides. The staff is always very friendly, and the breakfast sandwiches are always great. The sandwiches are cooked fresh to order so expect a bit of a wait, but it's completely worth it not to have a precooked patty of scrambled egg that is then microwaved - as one might elsewhere, even at locally owned places. In fact, it's very likely that riding to Dog Ears Cafe will become a regular tradition, even though I have no other reason to go to South Buffalo (not that it's not lovely).

Yelp
I love this place!! Relaxing vibes, good baked goods and coffee, friendly employees. I go here weekly for an early morning or early afternoon pick me up

Super friendly staff who were incredibly welcoming and helpful. Delicious chai iced latte and amazing fresh egg sandwiches/wraps! Will be back if we are in the area!

Yelp
So, this place is very close to my home. For me it serves as a middle ground between local coffee chains, in that the quality is solid, the convenience is there and the prices fall between other places. Coffee aside, this place offers much more. Food, baked goods, desserts and other treats like the homemade power bars they offer at the counter. (If they aren't sold out!) I believe this place operates as a Non Profit but no matter, you will be paying full price for your stuff. Nothing in this world is free, right? They do have a loyalty program where they punch a card with each purchase and you get a free coffee after I believe 8 punches, so that's nice. I usually get a Frappuccino and they flavor it however you want. I recommend the white chocolate with one pump of almond. Yum! Still, the price falls really close to Starbucks and SPoT. I wish it didnt, as I would frequent this place more often! The atmosphere is a vintage cozy like your typical hole in the wall coffee shop, but uniquely offers a pretty large library of books and board games with tables and nooks scattered about for your hang out experience. Nice! One thing I will note, the humus plate they serve is really yummy! The bread is warm and chewy and its just enough to fill you up as a lunch. Overall a really great little gem and I'm happy to have it so near to my home.

Yelp
What a quaint, peaceful, perfect place to grab coffee and read a book! Great book choices, amazing atmosphere, and even better staff.

Yelp
Formerly, Caz Coffee -- Dog Ears Cafe & Bookstore is a wonderful addition to the neighborhood. It's such a nice little cafe and bookstore hybrid serving panini's, coffee and incredible scones (seriously their scones are to die for). Every Friday morning they have their "Free Coffee Friday" where they hook you up with a free cup of coffee from opening to around 12 or 1pm. Their breakfast sandwich, which to be fair was on the pricier side ($5-7 if I remember correctly) was really yummy. Tasty bacon and a pesto that paired well with the eggs. Loved it! I had some of their other lunch options as well before and I've yet to find a sandwich that I don't like. The best part is the homey atmosphere and all the people from the neighborhood who come here. Some bring their kids as this place is a bookstore which hosts a whole variety of activities (the cafe funds their bookstore operations). Great place for the community. Have I mentioned their scones?

Yelp
This is a super neat little cafe and book store and I've visited a few times. They make great drinks and have fantastic pastries (especially those homemade pop tarts and the coconut pastries which name escapes me). Their drinks are tasty and well priced and they've got lots of homemade sandwiches, soups, and other things to try to lunch or dinner. There isn't a ton of seating here so don't expect to bring the extended family but it's a cozy and perfect place to do some work, grab lunch with a friend, or just enjoy a snack or coffee and relax with a book. Onto the book store, what a cool little place with lots to see and browse through in a small and snug place. They've got loads of books from local authors, and about the local community and surrounding area which I thought was super cool. The staff here are very friendly and helpful with lots of recommendations and ideas if you're looking for a gift or something for yourself. They frequently have events and other activities going on here in their upstairs space including story time for kiddos and other programs. Very cool little place, and gem in south Buffalo. It's street parking only for this place but I havn't yet experienced an issue with that as it isn't the busiest place in the world. Go an visit today you'll have an excellent time I'm sure!

Yelp
This is one of the best places to relax in South Buffalo, and if you have a kid between 2 and 5, make sure you check out Storytime! Mr. Tom, the owner, is a pure delight. He reads the books so they really come alive and he is able to keep the kids' attention through multiple books, snack, and a craft. The coffee downstairs is always hot and ready, so make sure to grab a cup before you heat upstairs for Storytime. The decor downstairs is very eclectic and it reminds me of the original vibe of Spot Coffee. This bookstore is a great gem for the community as there as frequently events bringing people together and promoting literacy in children and adults. A lot of the books are from local authors and the charities supported are local too. I really can't say enough good stuff about this place. Keep up the good work!

Yelp
Fantastic! Healthy! Fresh! Affordable! Support local business!!!! I reccomend the Hemingway or The Jungle panini's! Second to none!

Yelp
I had time to spare before heading into work, so placed a phone order at Dog Ears Cafe & Bookstore for a small coffee and egg sandwich. My order was ready in less than 5 minutes and totaled $9. The coffee was fresh and hot and the sandwich delicious. The sandwich also came with a side of fruit. On top of it, the service was fast and accommodating. I highly recommend Dog Ears Cafe & Bookstore!

Yelp
The cutest bookstore I came across. After moving back to Buffalo I keep trying to find a cute place to work and do my graduate homework- and I have finally found it! There is free wifi available and delicious homemade baked goods. I had a large cup of coffee and a huge homemade granola bar for $5! I browsed around the book selection and they offer top sellers, local writers, and even kids have there own section! If you buy 7+ coffees the 8th is free and sandwiches, smoothies, salads are available to purchase! Definitely worth the trip!

Yelp
I loved this place!! Such a cute place to be! they had a very friendly staff!! Will definitely visit again if i am in this area!!

Yelp
Cooper served us and he was such a nice person to interact with on our first visit! I ordered the egg sandwich without pesto (I'm more of a basil pesto fan, and this comes with sun-dried tomato) and was blown away--the egg was freshly cracked and prepared to perfection, coupled with a toasty and fluffy ciabatta & a marriage of cheese and bacon. I loved that it came with fresh fruit--a nice complement of pineapple, cantaloupe, grapes. I'm always grateful to places that include fresh fruit for no extra charge. Not only is their food reasonable, but the cafe is so cozy and eclectic. My friend ordered the French toast and remarked "this is really good!" And was happy with how affordable the food was. He also said it was fluffy French toast, which is always a plus. We are going to check out the Bookstore part after we finish eating, but so far our visit has been amazing!

Yelp
1st time here, would definitely come back to try more foods/drinks. So many choices to choose from! Freindly staff, cozy atmosphere!

Yelp
I honestly cannot say enough good things about Dog Ears Cafe & Bookstore. With a very hip and homey atmosphere upfront, community and educational programs from the back office, Free Coffee Fridays (a large is only $.65! Awesome deal!), great food, story time for the toddlers... this place does it all. A great location on Abbott Rd. right near Mercy Hospital - parking can be tight, but obviously well worth walking a couple of blocks to enjoy this establishment and all the wonderful people that work there! Check them out on a Friday morning - give their coffee and breakfast treats a try, read a book and relax your life for an hour. You won't regret a moment of it!
