The 15 Best Restaurants In Sherman Oaks

"Ventura Blvd. is full of delicious and affordable sushi spots you can go to once a week, so let us help you prioritize—go to Dojo first. Located in a big shopping center with easy parking (a major perk in Sherman Oaks), this casual spot has excellent, fresh fish at reasonable prices (lunch specials hover in the $20 range) and massive flat-screen TVs playing boring midday sports that you can mindlessly stare at. Dojo Izakaya Review - East Village - New York - The Infatuation

"Recently, I was listening to a podcast about happiness (Sorry. I know. Up next, we can talk about our favorite NPR shows and professional American soccer) where the host explained that there are two types of people in the world: "maximizers" and "satisficers." Maximizers are obsessed with finding the very best in life at all times, while satisficers (yes, that's a combination of "satisfying" and sufficing") are usually happy with something that's pretty good. If you read this website regularly, you're probably a maximizer - the person in your group of friends who considers restaurant menus required reading and plans for large group dinners as if they were job interviews. So without getting too Malcolm Gladwell on you, consider this: Dojo Izakaya is a satisficer restaurant. It's satisfying and it suffices. It's not "Perfect For" Parents In Town or for Big Groups, but it is "Perfect For" having a good time with some pretty good food. It's also almost absurdly reasonable. Dojo Izakaya is a sibling of the East Village's beloved Sushi Dojo, but it's more of a random cousin than a brother or sister. The Avenue B space is tiny, and the menu is made up of Japanese small plates. All of this may sound like a backhanded compliment, but it's not. Dojo Izakaya is a fun little place with good bites and incredibly friendly service, where you can easily spend less than $40 a person including personal cans of sake per person. So next time you're looking furiously for a low key East Village spot, remember Dojo Izakaya. Also remember not to lose your sh*t every time you try to pick a place for dinner, you maximizer. It's going to be OK. We're here for you. Food Rundown Gobo Chips These are awesome. You get some fried crispy gobo (it's a root vegetable, so we hear) with a tangy cod roe dipping sauce. Order this. Takoyaki Your other must-order. If you haven't tried deep fried octopus-filled dough balls, change that ASAP. Imagine a savory doughnut hole filled with chunks of octopus. Kani Korokke Believe it or not, these are not mozzarella sticks. And tempting as they sound, they're the far lesser of the seafood-filled fried balls you can get here. These are filled with crabmeat, and they're kind of a fishy mushy whatever. Katsu Sando A piece of thick crispy fried pork between pieces of toasted white bread. A nice bite, if not the most exciting one. Buta Kakuni If you're looking for a (small) item of meat, this is the one to go with. It's a very tender braised pork belly, and it's better than the weird lukewarm hamburger on a plate that is the Hamburg Steak." - Hillary Reinsberg

Dojo Sushi Review - Sherman Oaks - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

Google
Are regular sushi spot was closed and I finally came to this place that has been recommended to be multiple times and now I understand. The sushi was incredible and SO fresh. It was pricy but so worth it. Best $11 for two pieces of albacore belly I have ever spent!

Google
The absolute best sushi on Ventura Blvd. This is the spot. Orange salmon sashimi and the Lemon Tuna roll are two of the best. We had the Hamachi Taco tonight and it was fun!

Very fresh and delicious sushi! I came in around 7pm and it was a very relaxing atmosphere. I had gyoza and the viper roll, it comes topped with gold flakes ✨

Google
Waited over 1 hour just for 2 simple rolls and on top of that it wasn’t even busy. When served after wait ONE HOUR the rolls were not fresh felt old and cold will not be coming back to this place ever again! And then I ask for eel sauce when the rolls came after 1 hour and I waited 30 minutes just for simple sauce this place needs to do better this is ridiculous!

Rachel

Google
Incredibly fresh and delicious sushi. Obsessed with the crunchy fried onions on top of some of the rolls. Also, the spicy garlic edamame was a 11/10. Soooo good!

Melissa Knighton

Google
Tiny place with excellent sushi. Service was as good as any fine dining restaurant without the high price tag. We had the chicken gyoza. They were light and crispy. Not at all greasy. And the dipping sauce had a lemony fresh taste. We had the Big Daddy, Viper and Hubba hubba rolls. All so delicious and fresh and unique.

My wife and I ate at Dojo Sushi last night, and unfortunately, we both became extremely ill just hours afterward. We woke up in the middle of the night with severe vomiting and other symptoms of food poisoning. This was the only meal we shared that day, and it was clearly the cause. We’ve enjoyed sushi many times from various places and have never experienced something like this. It was a very upsetting and painful experience, and I hope the restaurant takes food safety seriously to prevent this from happening to anyone else.

Aliona Tatarinova

Google
Delicious sushi and great service! We’ve tried all rolls from their NO RICE menu, and it was to die for! Sashimi were very fresh and tender. I highly recommend their signature no rice Doja Roll - the combination of flavors is incredible! Parking on Friday was a little busy, but there are a lot of options: they have a big lot in front, there are plenty of meters on the street. We did not make a reservation, so had to wait for 10 minutes to be seated.

Yelp
Dojo has been a go-to in Sherman Oaks for a long time, and with good reason. The sushi is first rate, and the chefs do a great job of serving what you like while also adding enough of their own flair to make things special. The selection of sake is quite nice, and the overall atmosphere of the restaurant deftly walks the line between "local hangout" and "destination party dining." With tables inside and out (in addition to the sushi bar), you really have your choice of experiences, and can opt for whatever suits your mood on a given day. The Chirashi Bowl that I ordered included a nice variety of fish, including ikura, and the quantity really equaled its quality, with good sized slices making for a satisfying meal. With an almost countless number of sushi places available on Ventura Blvd., Dojo is a reliable and worthy spot to make a point of visiting.

Yelp
Dojo Sushi in Sherman Oaks offers a fantastic dining experience with a vibrant atmosphere, perfect for sushi lovers and sports fans alike. The restaurant features large TVs for watching your favorite sports games, making it an ideal spot to relax and enjoy a meal with friends or family. The Tel Aviv Roll is a standout, with a unique blend of avocado and asparagus on top of baked salmon, scallions, mayo. I also tried the Salmon and Tuna Avocado Rolls, which were yummy. For drinks, the selection was solid, and they pair perfectly with the sushi. The service at Dojo Sushi was friendly and efficient, adding to the overall positive experience. Whether you're in the mood for a casual meal or watching a game with great food, Dojo Sushi is definitely worth a visit!

Yelp
My mom and I came here for the first time after an event on Monday evening. The place was very clean and even in the late hours, there were multiple parties still outside by the heaters enjoying their meals. We only ordered a couple of rolls and some edamame as we didn't want to get too full before heading home to get to bed. Our sushi was good, but we must've asked for our edamame about two or three times before it was brought to us- practically at the end of our meal. A majority of the staff spoke broken English. I saw there were some reviews on here that spoke negatively about the quality of service, but I think it's just a language barrier at this point.

Yelp
S M A L L P O R T I O N S i cant believe all the good to great reviews for this place. I honestly don't know why. Service was adequate. Ambiance is zero. The portions on EVERY single of the 6 or 7 things we got were ALL VERY SMALL!!!!! The salmon sushi pieces were short and razor thin. Cut rolls barely had any content. Very disappointed and still hungry!

Yelp
One of the few local sushi spots open on Fourth of July. Haven't gone here in years as feel the pricing is high comparatively, however no complaints about the fish quality and taste. We got the lunch bento box. $30 for miso soup, salad, a choice of appetizer (we got gyoza- comes with 3 pieces), choice of 2 basic cut rolls (we got spicy tuna and yellowtail, both 4 pieces each), and choice of entree (we got teriyaki salmon). Everything was tasty. Next time I'd opt for just a larger portion of the cut rolls as opposed to the whole box since that was the main attraction for me. Both the spicy tuna and yellow tail were melt in your mouth, and I definitely wanted more. We also tried the hubba hubba, which appears to be one of their top hits and I can see why. The albacore is so yummy and pairs well with the garlic ponzu as always. Next time I'd try the tuna lemon as well. Also enjoy that they have outside seating out front. Perfect for a sunny LA day.

Yelp
Good Food , Good Service, decent ambiance, but pricey for what it is, and where it is.

Yelp
The best sushi spot in the area! There is usually a line and it gets busy in the evenings and especially weekends. Good luck parking in the lot, usually we park down the street and walk. My bf loves sitting at the counter and watching the sushi be made, but we have dined inside and outside. The patio outside is lovely. Depending on our mood we will order sake, wine, beer, or their iced tea. I love their peach tea and my bf enjoyed their strawberry iced tea. Service is fast and they make sure to get you whatever you may need. The times they are slow is when it's super busy; so understandable. Sushi is fresh, and the price matches the quality. I usually order their bento box, it's served with a salad, miso soup, and your choice of entrees. I love the tempura and chicken teriyaki. My bf loves their rolls, and sashimi. Great spot to come for a date, celebrate, with friends and family. They do not take reservations so first come first serve! My bf always ordered the spicy crispy rice and Shishitos, can't go wrong! The hubba hubba roll is phenomenal as well! The blue crab hand roll is very fresh too, or a large size but very tasty.

Yelp
Drove by on a recent Saturday evening & place was packed! Mistakenly thought this meant it was good. Ordered for delivery today and was seriously disappointed. I got mixed tempura which was anemic in size, worse dripping with oil and even the dipping sauce was flavorless. My double shrimp roll was blah, the outer shrimp is slices of boiled shrimp with a rubbery consistency. I really hate to dis restaurants because IMO they rely heavily on reviews. I'm always hoping for as good as the reviews say but this place doesn't cut it. Gods honest truth- the frozen shrimp tempura sold by Trader Joe's far out does the shrimp tempura I ate today. With endless options for sushi all around me I'll be avoiding this place!

Yelp
I came here on a Monday night and was seated and served promptly. Very nice ambiance with outdoor seating as well. I had the cooked lobster sushi roll and it was quite good. I'd definitely come back.

Yelp
Great, clean place great service great dishes. Highly recommended. Salmon collar and cod and yellowtail.
google avatar

Olivia R.

Yelp
I will for sure be coming back! I wish I took a picture of my sushi roll, but it was super fresh same with the ginger and wasabi. The staff was very professional and very busy this place always seems to be packed which is good sign! The parking is a little hard since it's inside a complex with other businesses so you might have to wait a while to find a parking spot.
google avatar

Jacob C.

Yelp
Dojo is easily located along the Ventura corridor. There are plenty of sushi restaurants in the area and this location is pretty good.
google avatar

Steven H.

Yelp
We have been here so many times. Everything is always exceptional. The baked crab hand roll on soy paper is one of our favorites. My kids love the chicken skewers too, so much!
google avatar

Me C.

Yelp
Well I had high hopes for this place as the pictures looked really good. But it was just okay. For the price - not worth it. Rainbow roll - said it was real snow crab - it's definitely mixed with something other than pure snow crab so for the higher price it doesn't make sense. Also the actual pieces of fish were pretty thin/small. 8/10 Lobster roll - also said snow crab. Again maybe 10% is made of snow crab. Too much mayo sauce - drowned it. 7.5/10 Spicy tuna on crispy rice. Well the price was great, which means there is very little tuna here. 7.5/10 Salmon bento - the salmon was dry and overcooked. So it was pretty disappointing. Not a fan of the tempura sauce either. 6/10

Yelp
First-timer but not my last. Great fresh sushi! Fausto was my server - very pleasant and friendly. Keep up the great work guys. Buon appetito!
google avatar

Yelp
Really good sushi. The Oaks crunch roll was super bomb as was the crispy rice and tuna. Brussel spouts appetizer was delicious, super crispy/crunch with a delicious soy/teriyaki drizzle. We'll be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Updating my review after yet another amazing experience at Dojo sushi! Watched some basketball and sat at the bar which was quiet and not overly crowded. The king salmon sushi and crispy onion albacore sashimi were so perfect and marinated with the most delicious sauces. Don't miss out on their hand rolls--they're all fantastic, especially the salmon skin hand roll and shrimp tempura hand roll. The service is always consistent, and the staff are awesome and welcoming. Sitting at the sushi bar is always a great choice for a more personal experience. The chefs are super attentive and go above and beyond to make sure patrons are happy with their orders. Plus, they even accept customization on certain items. Highly recommend this spot for delectable, quality sushi and excellent service!
google avatar

Harmony L.

Yelp
My favorite sushi place, hands down! Always great service, amazing food, love the atmosphere - it's consistent. They also give complimentary Brussel Sprouts, which I find to be so kind. Our go to's are the Miso Cod and a couple of the rolls such as Salmon Lime, 911, Hubba Hubba, and Big Daddy. You can't go wrong! Their rock shrimp is also delicious. For simpler rolls, our go to's are the spicy salmon cut roll and spicy salmon yellowtail. Miso Cod done right can be hard to find; it always comes out so fresh, hot off the grill, perfectly crisp and falls right off. Their rolls are a good size, they don't skimp on the fish. Always tastes fresh. Their service - it's almost as if you don't have 1 person helping you, it's everyone! Last time I went, I had 3 different people asking if we needed anything else or would like to order more. Parking is humbug. The lot is 90% full unless you're lucky. You can find street parking on Ventura (meter) or Moorpark. This will always be my sushi spot.
google avatar

Denae C.

Yelp
This spot is small! You need to go early to get a table inside. Lots of outdoor seating, but on a hot day, facing south, the heat is too much! We got a table inside and were quickly met by Tommy! He spoiled us with his knowledge and incredible service. We never needed to ASK for anything. Awesome experience. Thank you, Tommy!
google avatar

Jake A.

Yelp
A decent sushi place, nothing stood out as being particularly fantastic, and everything is just a bit above average price for what you get. Got the chirashi, sashimi combo, and a couple of other dishes and it was a fine lunch but I think there are better alternatives in the area.
google avatar

Dani M.

Yelp
THE SUSHI IS AWESOME the service is absolute horrid.. and unfortunately the service determines whether you're going to have a great experience at a restaurant. The owner is very kind and attentive to anything you may need. The servers though, TRASH. I've had so many bad experiences with the staff here. We order takeout often and even call in advance to confirm any modifications or a sauce because this place is always busy. I talked to Carlos today to confirm my order had soy paper and extra garlic ponzu ( WHICH COMES WITH THE ORDER AND WAS CHARGED FOR) not only did he not include the sauce, I got absolutely NOTHING. I called to talk to him and HE YELLED AT ME OVER THE PHONE. Said it's the sushi chef problem and not mine. completely unprofessional and disappointing. People who have difficult/ demanding careers rely on the restaurant to provide what they advertise. Sending a dry roll with none of the fixings after confirming is just infuriating ( especially late at night) This place needs to do better. I can't even BEGIN to start on the raw meat served, or this Hispanic female server who said I needed to tip her more before she gave me sauce for my gyoza.
google avatar

GyuRee G.

Yelp
Went one year ago and visited 2nd time. The crispy rice tuna is so good ( I went other sushi place, but this is the best in my life... ) They served small dishes, but high qualities! :) Highly recommend this place.
google avatar

Rachel T.

Yelp
Dojo Sushi is a solid choice for a no-frills sushi dinner. This is our local sushi-eatery, so we always walk-in without a reservation and have no trouble getting a seat. They do tend to get busier around 6:30pm/7pm. I would recommend sitting outdoors, their space inside is a little cramped and I am not fond of the seafood smell. The service is a little sporadic, but we haven't had any major issues. Everything usually comes out quickly, but not always together. I am a sushi novice, so I go for the Shrimp Tempura roll and the Spicy Tuna roll. I really do love the Shrimp Tempura roll, it's got a nice flavor profile. But I've definitely had better Spicy Tuna Roll's. They really put a lot of tuna in there, which gives me the slight ick because I'm still very new to eating raw fish. Other than that it's still pretty good. The Salmon Bento box is my friends go-to, and you get a lot for the price! It comes with a hefty piece of salmon, white rice, tempura, salad, and a miso soup appetizer. Definitely recommend ordering the bento boxes if you're not into sushi. As for the pork gyoza, it's good but not great. This place does have a parking lot and there's also street parking in the surrounding area.
google avatar

Natalie R.

Yelp
Super good quality, great service, good options for the lunch. Cesar Ramirez recomended this place. He works here and suggested what to order. Husband and I loved it.
google avatar

Jessica U.

Yelp
I love coming to Dojo sushi for date nights and for lunch during the week, it's a cute place and I love to sit outdoors and enjoy the yummy food, service is always fast and super friendly!
google avatar

Nick H.

Yelp
This joint is easy and the food is beautiful. I wouldn't call it romantic but it's cozy enough. Most of all - really good and fresh food. ...and they have a dog friendly patio.
google avatar

Maggie H.

Yelp
Best sushi we've had anywhere. The sushi chefs are incredibly attentive and open to accommodating gluten free preferences. Hands down our favorite spot!
google avatar

Rachel F.

Yelp
I ordered 1 special lobster and 1 albacore roll w crunchy onion on top. The price point is pretty heavy, and since I was ordering takeout I thought I was bound to be disappointed - but the serving size was beyond filling and the fish was fresh! Very yummy and would come again to dine in. The outdoor seating looked really nice. The service was great - very helpful and met me outside since I had two young kids with me.
google avatar

Peggy D.

Yelp
Very good service and the sushi was quality. I haven't had sushi that tasted so good in a long time!
google avatar

Anna M.

Yelp
They have fresh fish no matter what day or time of the week you go. Everything on the menu is delicious. The customer service is amazing!!
google avatar

Bruce K.

Yelp
I always want to write a five-star review, I do, I do. But it's not always possible, I'm afraid. So, what's the deal with Dojo Sushi? Well, here's my deal. I've been trying every Japanese restaurant near me, hoping to find great food and by great food I'm talking about the one thing I'll eat at Japanese restaurants, which is the chicken Bento Box or combo plate of chicken teriyaki and mixed tempura. And I have yet to find any place that does it to my liking, I'm afraid, and that includes this one. I understand that they're known for their sushi here but I can't talk about that because I don't eat it. But if you're going to have other items for sale, especially at these prices (twenty-three bucks for a Bento Box), it better be great. Of course, great is in the eye or mouth of the beholder. The chicken was fine, the teriyaki sauce wasn't, not for me anyway - a bit funny, a bit flavorless. Rice was, of course, fine. Tempura was a bit mushy but okay certainly, and the salad was a salad and fine. I did get a side of their cucumber salad and I will say that was great and I'd go get that again. I'll keep trying and maybe I'll hit the jackpot one of these fine days.
google avatar

Jenny E.

Yelp
Good sushi spot! Came on the Thursday night and didn't have to wait for a table for 2. Fish tasted fresh and they had a good selection. Spicy tuna crispy rice was also delicious. My water glass was never empty and I never had to ask to have it filled which is always great imo. Parking sucks -- while there is a parking lot, with so many stores in the center it's hard to find a spot. Meters on the street are free after 6pm or something like that. Will definitely be back!
google avatar

Simon C.

Yelp
If you're in the valley or around the Sherman Oaks and Encino area I would highly recommend this spot. Excellent through and through and the fish is high quality.
google avatar

Elizabeth M.

Yelp
Very fresh and delicious sushi and sashimi. Better than most, next level freshness and presentation. No frills. Just go. You'll become a regular.
google avatar

Or B.

Yelp
During the evening it is not cold with the heaters outsides. Service was good and food came out in a good pace. Food was delicious and fresh, especially the sushi rolls.
google avatar

El P.

Yelp
The restaurant is open until 11pm, however they REALLY want you to leave at 10:40pm so they turn up the music ( so you cannot hear each other) and bang everything... Even though they charge you full price for your food at 10pm. (And even if you politely turn the music down a little until 11pm...they ignore you.) Highly recommend somewhere else for late night food.
google avatar

Stace G.

Yelp
Fantastic sushi spot with a more relaxed ambience and quiet space than others in the area. It was lively, but not loud, and there were small details that elevated it. The sushi itself was fantastic-- really fresh, made well, and elegantly plated. The service was fine, a little haphazard at times, but nothing off. The wine and sake list was limited, but had good options. Parking took a few loops, but there is a free lot available.
google avatar

Meilani D.

Yelp
Sit outside lol there's lots of space. Also I don't eat sushi so I ordered their beef and rice bowl which was great! Along with their miso soup. Everyone else I was with KILLED their sushi though... Also their Brussel sprouts were FIRE. Order them. Quickly. great place to have a family dinner
google avatar

Lily S.

Yelp
Came in here because of the yelp reviews, it did not disappoint. The fish albacore sashimi, was cut quite thick. looking at it I thought it would not be good, but it actually melted in your mouth. The servers were very sweet and kind Overall good food, hits the spot, good fish. Will come back.
google avatar

Bobby I.

Yelp
Great sushi. Tuna crispy rice got better w each bite. Yellow tail belly yum! Great service.
google avatar

Brian L.

Yelp
The sushi here is really good but..... Don't ever expect to get it on time. I ordered online at 4:44, got an email confirmation that it would be ready at 5:13, got there at 5:30 and was told it would be another 20-25 minutes. We finally made got our order at 6:04. The food is really good but it's a poorly run restaurant. I wish I could say this is a one time experience but it happens every time we order to go.
google avatar

Elizabeth R.

Yelp
Nice and clean location. Great service. Very attentive to detail. Food and appetizers were good.

Yelp
Now I gotta be honest with you ... I was hungry after a shift at work and was craving sushi !! Ventura never fails and I'm surprised I've never ran into this joint !!! First of all they close at 11:30 pm so thankful I made it fifteen mins before closing !!! Now you would think they want out of here (because of closing hours ) but boy were they friendly !! I even had a sample of some yummy tuna WOW (service ) also the two rolls I got were hands down delicious !!! I will certainly be back !!! It's clean it's efficient it's a friendly staff and all around cool vibes !!! I sat at the bar and ate my food not feeling rushed at all so THANK YOU !!!! Yummy 8 out of ten

Yelp
I walked in starving and half dead from a LONG week of work and was immediately greeted and sat. My server was also a manager (I think?) named Art who made a great recommendation on the menu when I was trying to decide between two rolls: he offered to have the chef make me a hybrid and it was absolutely fantastic. He must have sensed how wrecked I was because he also brought out a complimentary snack while I waited. SUPER nice staff, f*cking DELICIOUS rolls and a great atmosphere. Can't wait to come back! (I had a rice-less cucumber roll with salmon, avocado, snow crab and lime with ponzu sauce and a side of crispy Brussels sprouts.) (Do your mouth a favor and try this place!)
google avatar

Marjan N.

Yelp
4 1/2 stars here. One change that needs to be made is fresh Yuzu vs bottled one. The acidity was not becoming of the quality fish and cuts. Great menu, all bases covered and very friendly staff and service. Must haves: tostada and toro sushi.
google avatar

Michael R.

Yelp
My experience at Dojo Sushi in Los Angeles was disappointing. While the service was fast and the wait staff was friendly, the food was not up to par. In fact, it was possibly the worst sushi I have ever had in my life. My wife and I ordered 7 different rolls, and all of them tasted bland and had an excessive amount of raw onions on top, which was unappetizing. To make matters worse, both my wife and I fell ill the following day after dining at the restaurant. This raises concerns about the restaurant's food handling practices and hygiene standards. Overall, based on my experience, I cannot recommend Dojo Sushi in Los Angeles. While the service and wait staff were positive aspects, the poor quality of the food and concerns about food safety make it difficult to recommend this restaurant to others.

Jasmin P.

Yelp
I was there 12/11/2024 and let's just say the service and management is beyond horrible. The establishment wasn't even that busy but clearly they took over 45 minutes for 1 dojo roll. We tried waving the bald manager wearing glasses down while we were sitting outside . The only other table sitting outside but it was as if he was deliberately ignoring our waves and arms calling him over. The waiters seems confused as we had 2 diff waiters coming by and each time we asked the male waiter would say the food is on the way. Clearly it wasn't there were 3 sushi chef's inside and everyone got their food before us . After last night I can guarantee you I will not step foot in this restaurant. They didn't even take the roll off the check like the female waiter said they would not charge us. Improve your service from Top Down including acknowledging the customer when they are trying to wave the manager down . Train your wait staff .

Yelp
Absolutely the yellow tail collar is the hidden gem of this menu. This piece is so huge and so delicious i'm so satiated. Recommend coming early in the day coz they run out by night time. the salmon and tempura also were perfectly cooked. just the right amount of christy and softness. And the sauces are so well mixed and seasoned. Soooo goood! this is still one of my fave sushi spot in the valley!

Yelp
10/10 every time. Sushi is always so fresh and the service is always great! Good vibe whether you're inside, outside or at the sushi bar.
