The Best New Restaurants in Houston, Texas in July 2025 | Eater Houston

"Duckstache Hospitality, the restaurant group behind restaurants like Handies Douzo and Aiko, is back at it again with another one. Its latest restaurant, Doko, opened in an alleyway in Autry Park, offering a combination of sushi and yakitori dishes prepared using cooking techniques like brining, fermenting, dry-rubbing, and charcoal. Of the hot dishes, the aromatic chicken fat rice, which is topped with a slow-cooked Japanese egg, is a highlight. Opt for the six-course tasting menu, which features crudo, chef-selected nigiri, and the wagyu toast, and consider a before- or after-dinner drink at the nearby Bar Doko, which boasts one of the largest Japanese whisky collections in Houston. Cheers." - Brittany Britto Garley

I recently visited Doko in Houston, and it was a really good experience overall! The atmosphere was great—modern yet cozy, and the staff were friendly and attentive. The menu offers a variety of unique dishes, and the flavors didn’t disappoint. I especially enjoyed the Nasu eggplant, Hamachi crudo, the chicken fat rice was interesting but have had better fried rice before. Tebasaki chicken wings were nice but could not taste the yuzu enough. I enjoyed the Gochujung kFC- the spice and the crispiness of the wings was perfect. Definitely loved the bluefin otoro, madai, Hamachi, unagi and Kinoko! We ended with a delicious cheesecake. I’ll definitely be back to try more dishes and would recommend it to anyone looking for a flavorful, enjoyable meal.

I really enjoyed my time in this establishment. The food itself was amazing: I feel they are trying new things while paying the utmost respect to the original cuisine; the mix of flavors they experimented with on their raw offerings were sublime, and their cooked options were also extremely good (I prefer raw traditional Japanese food, sue me). Service was A++, same with ambiance. Their signature cocktail, the Japanese Watermelon drop was fantastic as well. Highly recommended!

I am always down to try all the restaurant concepts from this hospitality group! I love handies and aiko and expected this place to also not let me down. The menu here feels like a few overlaps of their other restaurants I am familiar with but I still enjoy the dishes regardless. This spot gives more happy hour casual vibes in regards to the menu imo but service is great still. Quite dark in here but cozy and intimate.

Had the $75 lunch tasting and honestly loved every bite. Super fresh, super flavorful-everything was just really well done. Drinks were a bit pricey, but they were really good, so no complaints there. Service was amazing—everyone was so friendly and on point. Definitely planning to come back!

Google
I loved this restaurant’s cozy, eclectic atmosphere. Our server was attentive and knowledgeable, and the food was overall delicious. Some standouts include the chicken fat rice and the chef’s choice nigiri. They also had some great lunch set deals, and they have several options in their yakitori menu for non-sushi eaters as well. Overall, the presentation and execution of detail was incredible. I would definitely recommend trying this place out!

Google
Fan of Handies so I had to come check out Doko. Cute interior and love the booth style seats at the sushi bar. Everyone there was friendly and delivered great service. The chutoro nigiri was super delicious and almost rivaled/got close to Katami’s version. The edamame, the chicken wing yakitori was juicy and bomb, kani maki with some of that chili garlic sauce on top, and some surprise crudo from the chef made it that much more special.

Google
Doko is a hidden gem that perfectly blends warm hospitality with an unforgettable dining experience. The cocktails at Doko are a perfect blend of creativity and balance, with each drink showcasing unique flavor combinations that complement the meal without overpowering it. The menu is a showcase of flavors, each dish thoughtfully crafted and beautifully presented. We opted for the chef’s tasting menu and savored every bite. The attention to detail, from the quality of the ingredients to the artistry of the plating, was truly impressive. What really set the experience apart, though, was the service. The staff were not only knowledgeable but also genuinely enthusiastic about the food. Their thoughtful recommendations and insight added an extra layer of enjoyment, making each dish feel like a personalized masterpiece. Doko is the kind of place that stays with you long after the meal ends. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply in search of a unique culinary adventure, it’s a must-visit in Houston. We’ll definitely be back—this time, with more friends to share the experience!

Google
Came here for Lunch and had a great experience. Ordered the Sushi Lunch set which came with a roll and 5 nigiri. Also ordered some additional items like ramen and Yakitori. All the food tasted amazing and were all presented well. Service was also great. Everyone was accommodating. The manager also stopped by to chat about their concept and seemed really passionate about the food. We enjoyed everything and would definitely return.

Yelp
Cozy sushi spot located in Autry Park. We ordered the lunch sets- 3 options from the lunch set menu. I ordered the sushi set C: masu makimono (most unique sushi roll ever- I'm still drooling over it). The chicken fat rice was just ok. It's lacking salt and flavor. But I asked for soy sauce and chili oil, which made it much better. Service was great. Good amount of seating. Parking is self parking garage which they validate or valet. Overall, solid place.

Yelp
Excellent restaurant with mid-century modern decor, attentive service and incredibly fresh sushi. Must-orders: Madai Crudo, Maguro Crudo, Bluefin tuna (either nigiri or sashimi), hamachi nigiri, masu maki, and the negitororo maki with caviar -- all outstanding. Other items I enjoyed but wouldn't consider essential: the ebi maki, nasu (eggplant), and shishito peppers -- good, but skippable if you're prioritizing. If you want to get a real taste of the chef's skill, I highly recommend the Chef's Nigiri 6. My husband and I shared one -- definitely meant for one person, but a great way to sample cuts we might not have picked on our own.

Yelp
Stumbled in here on a whim after discovering our initial spot ideas were closed. Was charmed by the ambiance. The restaurant has that neo-art deco in neutral pink tones that's everywhere these days. Cute and cohesive aesthetic. Our waiter was Kimberly and she provided EXCELLENT service. Not only did she thoughtfully guide us through specials, abided our odd drink requests, but she also gave us recommendations for other gutstache restaurants and attractions around town. Lunch was delicious. Had the best ramen I have ever tasted. Sushi was crafted by artisans who really cared about their work. It was a really nice experience. I found myself going "nom nom nom" audibly in the car for several hours after the meal just remembering the amazing dishes. I will definitely come back here and can't recommend it enough. Thank you again Kimberly for the exceptional service!!

Yelp
We checked out this new sushi spot by Autry Park. This is a small retail/restaurant area. They have the restaurant and bar separately but it was right across from each other. Easy to make resy online. When you arrive, you can park in the garage which has self parking per hour or do valet parking. The inside is small but I love the modern decor. It felt like an intimate experience. Our server was very nice and walked us through the menu. Menu was separated intro different categories. Their menu had their speciality items and your usual nigiri, sashimi, and makimono. We ordered the negitoro makimono, the chef's nigiri (6) for each of us, the gyoza, and ribeye yakitori. The gyoza had chicken foie, mushrooms, nuoc mam/fish sauce, served with pickle cabbage. A nice crunch on the outside and lots of flavor on the fillings. The ribeye yakitori was tender and melts in your mouth. The chef's nigiri with pretty solid. Overall, everything was good. Quality was solid. Service was fast. I hope they get a chance to develop their menu to have more speciality items in the future.

Yelp
Everything was delicious and beautifully presented. The service was phenomenal with great recommendations. Truly a wonderful experience--will definitely be returning! The seating was limited but spacious to feel comfortable love how they had booths on the sushi bar as well very picture pretty! The location was a bit hidden but easy once In the plaza, offered valet or just around was a charged parking garage less than 10$ for 1-2 hours!

Yelp
Yes, yes & yes. You should pick Doko for your next intimate sushi meal. I was impressed the second I sat down at the sushi bar in a super comfortable loveseat style chair. Our waiter was a great guide through our evening's meal. I appreciated that he talked through my ordering choices with me to create the best meal. Highlights- any dressed nigiri piece. We loved the foie Gras and blueberry bite, the madai and the otoro. We also loved the wagyu toast. The only thing I had that I didn't like was the matcha midori cocktail. The midori ruined it for me. You must end your night with a nightcap at bar doko. The matcha cocktail was so much better there and I loved our lemon sour cocktail.

Yelp
New development, new restaurant. Best bet is to park in the garage for the Autry Park area or the valet that's up front. Doko is tucked in a large hallway and opens up to a pretty cozy dining space that aims to feel like neighborhood Izakaya I'd say. Plenty of wood tones and textures with some bright and playful paint choices that take any of the edge off when you walk in. The menu is pleasantly tight, with about a dozen options in any of the 3 main sections; App/Shareables, Sushi, Makimono. Our waitress was very comfortable offering suggestions and helping us better understand the menu, very knowledgeable and kind. Quality and preparation, with some simple and elevated plating were present in about everything we ordered. Ingredients tasted fresh and familiar. Really enjoyed our visit here and the food too!

Yelp
Went to check out Doko for the first time during lunch with a coworker; located in the River Oaks / Memorial Park area. Parking is available only in the parking garages; the actual restaurant itself was a bit difficult to find honestly. The interior has a modern deco vibe and played some good Japanese hip hop, which was fresh. Service was good although they did not seem very busy for lunch service. We ordered quite a few different kinds of yakitori, foie gras and unagi nigiri, and a few maki rolls. The fried chicken / karaage was pretty solid with the kewpie mayo based sauce. Their Korean fried chicken sandwich which we split also had good flavor. Overall, it's a fairly aesthetically pleasing environment that they're going for. The fish quality seemed solid to me and everything that we ordered was tasty. Their hot foods also was a pleasant surprise for sushi spot.

Yelp
Another one of their franchise had open near River Oaks. I called ahead to see how the parking situation was like with valet & self park. I paid $7 for valet parking. First off beautiful restaurant. Greeted by a lovely hostess. The restaurant is very small. The decor is very fun & ecstatic. It kind of reminds me of Aya from the decor to presentation. The lighting in the restaurant was too dim so a lot of photos couldn't make it *cries. Sake list was small although our server did recommend a good one. Most memorable pieces were the king mushroom nigiri, masu maki, negihama maki. They don't offer too many fish off the menu. All the nigiris fell short. Not as innovative as their other restaurant concepts within their franchise. However our server Thien was fantasticcc. The service definitely carried the entire experience. He was extremely friendly & informative throughout the whole dinner. Overall the best thing out of our meal was the 10/10 excellent service from Thien!

Yelp
Was jazzed to try this new sushi restaurant in the Autry Park development. We went with some friends and had cocktails at Bar Doko before our 7 pm reservation. We checked in with the hostess and were taken straight to our table upon arrival. The dining space is bright and airy and feels very cool, but note that it is on the loud side. Our waitress walked us through the menu options but strongly suggested that we do the tasting menu if it was our first time dining with them. We took her advice and also added a couple of appetizer dishes that looked appealing. Overall I was a little disappointed with the food. I feel this was largely down to the rice being under seasoned and not super flavorful and because the rice was included in so many dishes, that had a really strong impact. Favorite dishes of the night were Japanese chicken meatball and the eggplant. One other thing of note, and one of my biggest restaurant menu pet peeves, the chicken gyoza dumplings have fried chicken in them and then the dumpling itself is also deep fried. Nowhere on the menu does it suggest that anything about the dumpling is deep fried. I just prefer to have that information given to me on the front end and not when the dish is served. Service throughout the evening was really great until the final dish was served and then our waitress kind of disappeared for almost 20 minutes before offering us a dessert menu. Ultimately, I would likely give this spot another try, but would probably order a la carte in the future.

Yelp
Doko is a sushi restaurant hidden in the Autry Park area, and the interior is nicely decorated with playful, bright colors. We went on a Saturday afternoon, and they had an afternoon menu with sets ranging from $19 to $32. I ordered the Set B with the hamachi maki and Set C with the masu (ocean trout) maki along with the A5 wagyu maki. The sets were similar, but the Set C came with an extra bowl of chicken fat fried rice garnished with an egg. The hamachi maki came with tamari sauce, and the masu maki came with fish sauce with chili oil. There were five pieces of each, but they we both large and filled with crunchy pieces of fried garlic/onion, which I really enjoyed. The sets came with 5 nigiris, and mine's consisted of akami, masu, hamachi, madai, and kanpachi. They were all fresh. My favorite was the hamachi! The chicken fat rice with fried egg was topped with fried shallots and garlic and smelt delicious. The A5 wagyu maki came with five pieces, but like the other maki, they were large and topped with an ample amount of wagyu pieces. The wagyu was torched, and you can taste the smokiness. However, the maki consisted of avocado, which I think drowned out the A5 wagyu, and it would have been better without the avocado. The service was friendly and fast. The vibes were very casual, and I liked how the seating at the bar were booths! Would definitely come back for a girls lunch!

Yelp
Another lovely concept from the guys behind Handies Douzo, Aiko, and Kokoro. Handies and Aiko are two of my favorites so I was excited to try this place. We did the six course tasting menu, which consisted of shishito peppers, a crudo, chef's choice of 4 nigiri pieces, chicken fat rice, wagyu toast, and a makimono roll. It's hard to choose favorites because everything was delicious. I highly recommend the tasting menu. For dessert, we ordered the basque cheesecake and the pistachio ice cream, both of which were great. Service was very friendly and food and drinks all came out in a timely manner. No complaints there. They validate parking in the Hanover Parkview garage but only for 2 hours and there is also $8 valet available. Overall we very much enjoyed our dinner here and will be back.

Yelp
We love the Duckstache concepts so we were super excited to hear that Doko had finally opened. We came here for dinner tonight. The ambiance was super cute. There were booths at the sushi bar meant for 2. Our server tonight was super sweet and attentive. My biggest complaint about tonight is how slow the food came out. I know they're working out the kinks being newly opened. For our apps we got the: 1) TSUKUNE: JAPANESE CHICKEN MEATBALL WITH JIDORI EGG. This was fun to eat while we dipped it in the egg. Just wish there was more! 2) A5 WAGYU TOAST: A5 WAGYU. KINOKO DUXELLES. CHIMICHURRI. CAVIAR. Basically what they sell at Kokoro but minus the egg at Doko. Always a solid choice but I did wish they had the egg. 3) CHICKEN FAT RICE. Also a Kokoro staple. Def add the egg for that extra UMPH. 4) KARAAGE: MARINATED FRIED CHICKEN. PICKLED CUCUMBER, LEMON AIOLI. The karaage fell short for me tonight. It wasn't as crispy as the other locations and I wasn't crazy about the lemon aioli. They also left out the pickled cucumber. 5) K.F.C: KOJI FRIED CHICKEN. SWEET GOCHUJANG. Tasted less like gochujang and more like buffalo sauce. I wasn't a fan, but my hubby loved it. We also had to get sushi so we got the otoro sashimi, nigiri 6 piece, the Kani roll and the negitoro maki roll plus caviar. The otoro sashimi was just ok. Didn't melt in your mouth and def had some bites that had that white "tendon" toughness. Their sushi is consistent with the other Duckstache options but less fish options we noticed. They do validate parking to a decreased rate but we ended up having to pay $5 for the 1-3 hour range that we were there. Overall, it was a fun experience but Aiko and Himari still reign supreme in our book.

Yelp
Doko is a sushi bar located on the side of Hanover Park View - right across the street from Hanover Autry Park. I was invited to a soft opening! It was delicious! They brought us out samples of their drinks, eats and of course the service. Service is always great on first days - the team was friendly and inviting! The food was great - we were licking the bits that remained! Excited to see it in full swing.

Yelp
Love the ambience and aesthetic. Chef Hugo was very helpful with the menu. Guided me thru the whole process and recommended me dishes. Will be coming back

Yelp
Welp. Let me start by saying I love many a Duckstache establishments, I might even be obsessed with Aiko! So of course I would be happy to come experience the nuances of Doko. Sadly- for this Thursday night quick stop if a second dinner, it was anything but that. We were promptly seated at our cozy bar seats, however no server to be seen for quite a while. A few minutes in someone came by and said there were 2 of them for the bar and someone would be by shortly. Usually I don't even notice the time going by as I'm usually caught up in conversation with the group and we're always delayed in making our decisions. This time however, was supposed to be a quick bite (second dinner as aforementioned) so we were ready to order with no server in sight. I had to flag one of the servers down who then said someone else would be by soon to take our order. My friend and I decided on the hamachi crudo and the chefs 4 nigiri each. I think we waited at least 20 minutes before the crudo came. And then another 20 at least, before we got the 4 piece nigiri. It didn't seem like an exceptionally busy night when we walked in especially being a Thursday, so I'm not sure if they were just short on staffing. Food was on par with the other establishments but just from service alone I'm not necessarily looking to run back here in a hurry. Parking is a plenty in the garage with 1 hr validation from the restaurants, but you can also score street parking on Tirrell.

Yelp
Another gem of the Handies Douzo/Aiko group! Similar menu/taste profile as their other locations, but it's all so tasty, how can I complain? Small quaint spot in Autry Park area with intimate vibes. Great service. Quality fish pieces. Love their crudos, chicken fat rice, and even their rolls.
google avatar

Jessica Z.

Yelp
Truly an amazing experience where vibes, service and food were 10/10! The decor was super cute and it was quite busy when we went. Our server was so attentive and gave great recommendations for us! We decided to do the $75 tasting menu which was truly worth the money for not only its taste but the volume of food you get as well. First dish was shishito peppers which were grilled nicely and so juicy. Second dish was crudo that had a base of ponzu and olive oil sprinkled cucumber and crunchy hot oil which was an unexpected but heavenly combo. Third dish was four different types of nigiri. This was truly a showstopper as the rice has a faint sweetness layered with high quality fish that instantly melts in your mouth. Fourth dish was the chicken fat rice topped with crunching garlic bits and a fried egg which was spectacular and so aromatic. Fifth dish was a wagyu toast which was a super unique spin and topped with caviar. Last dish was makimono, sushi roll with fatty tuna. This was so light and easy to eat, one of the best rolls I've had in Houston and makes me crave for more. We wanted to try their yakitori which we ordered the negima which was super tender chicken thigh with onions and kinoko buta, juicy mushroom wrapped in crispy bacon. We were also kindly given a cheesecake with chocolate truffle by our server as he forgot to put in our order for the yakitori which was a delicious creamy Japanese cheesecake paired with a rich chocolate truffle. Such an amazing experience filled with great service and shocking quality. I will say their sushi is now our top one in Houston. Definitely will be back to try more of their sushi and smaller dishes. You will not regret coming here!!!

Yelp
We had a good time with the six-course tasting menu at Doko. The courses were well-balanced and gave a nice overview of the restaurant's menu. I particularly liked the peppers and nigiri courses, and the chicken rice bowl was a nice touch too. The restaurant was pretty, and service was nice, though cocktails came out way after they started serving food. And I feel like an old person saying this, but...I just have to note that the restaurant is SUPER loud. You kind of get used to it as the night goes on, but it's definitely a vibe.

Yelp
I have been so excited to try Doko as Handies and Aiko are two of my go-to sushi spots. I came here with my boyfriend for his birthday. The ambiance is very warm and romantic, with almost a dreamy vibe. The design is very intentional, featuring loveseat bar seating and rounded booths, all of which elevated the dining experience. The service was also top tier. We both ordered the 6 course tasting menu which was more than enough food. We were debating ordering more yakitori on the side but was too full afterwards. Shishito peppers (7.5/10)- These were perfectly charred and topped with fish flakes with bonito flakes which was a great combination. Crudo (9/10) - Very fresh sashimi, ponzu and chili garlic create such a bold but balanced flavor that perfectly enhances the fish. Nigiri set (9/10) - Great quality fish with a nice assortment. Chicken fat rice (8/10) - This one was highly anticipated but I honestly was not the biggest fan. The flavor was very fragrant and I loved the addition of the crispy shallots but I couldn't eat more than a few bites. Wagyu toast (10/10)- Hands down the star of the meal! The wagyu melted into the toast which was soft yet perfectly crisp on the edges. Spicy tuna maki (8/10)- Nothing too special but delicious nonetheless. For dessert, we ordered the Basque cheesecake, which came with a chocolate truffle, both of which were rich and creamy but not too sweet. Would recommend!

Yelp
Will definitely have to add this place to one of my favorite sushi restaurants in houston. I was so excited to try this place when I first heard about its opening. I first ordered a crisp and refreshing sake and shortly after ordered the my favorite nigiri. I dream about chutoro on a regular basis and was so grateful when the chef gave me extra tuna nigiri on the house! The Wagyu toast was extremely unique as it was topped with a rich and delicious cream from Wagyu fat and caviar making the toast rich and flavorful and the chicken fat rice with egg was perfect! Ended with pistachio ice cream with grapefruit which complemented the ice cream and nuts nicely. Will be dreaming about this meal for a long time.

Holly C.

Yelp
Had a magical evening of delicious and fresh sushi. The Wagyu melts in your mouth. Can't stop thinking about how light and refreshing the Sunomono was. Also had the Hamachi Maki, the oyster special, the Wagyu Maki, Wagyu Toast, the Chicken Fat Rice, and Shishito peppers. Finished the night with the cheesecake and the mango-pineapple semifreddo special. Our service was incredible. You could never want for anything as they were already anticipating your needs and ready for you. The restaurant was beautiful inside. Intimate yet fun and inviting. Bathroom tiles were gorgeous lol. Highly recommend!!

Yelp
I am such a fan of everything by these chefs who created doko! From the original kokoro to handies douzo to aiko - we have enjoyed it all from them. Doko isn't an exception! We again loved doko! We all did the $75 set menu and it was exceptional. On top of the set menu - we started with the foie chicken dumpling and the chicken karage. Both were good - the chicken karage with the sauce being the favorite of the two. The chicken dumpling had less foie flavor - I wanted more of it! I also prefer not a full deep fried dumpling. We also got the pork belly mushroom yakitori which was so so delicious! Then starts the amazing set menu they offer! They start us off with a huge plate of shishito peppers. They are topped with bonito fish flakes so on top of the nice charred flavor - it has that umami from the fish flakes. The crudo is next and it was great flavor and fresh fish! This is a classic at handies douzo so it was the same quality here. The nigiris were next and they have a great assortment of- including fatty tuna and hamachi - fatty tuna truly always being the best! Wagyu toast was divine with the rich butter Japanese bread and Wagyu with caviar. The chicken fat rice is a classic at their original kokoro chef hall concept and it's amazing here as well! With the crispy shallots and great fragrant rice. We ended it all with a spicy tuna maki roll which was so delicious! The service was quite attentive and the ambiance is so cute and pink themed! Overall - I'll be back for sure! This place is amazing and their chain of Houston sushi restaurants have a place in my foodie heart!

Yelp
The food's solid here, but you can find most of the same stuff at their sister restaurant Kokoro, and it's usually a bit cheaper by a dollar or two. This place does have a cocktail menu and a nicer ambiance though, so it's great if you're in the mood for drinks or a more relaxed setting. Besides that the service was great. Our server was super friendly and attentive the whole night! My favorite was the ocean trout maki! The fish sauce paired really well with this delicate fish.

Yelp
First time trying Doko, I did the six course tasting menu. Food was all super fresh & delicious! Flavors were great & balanced. The service was slow/spotty despite the restaurant not being full. Overall the vibe & food were good & worth trying again!

Mark S.

Yelp
Tucked away near Autry Park in Houston, you will find an incredible sushi restaurant. I am from Southern California where we have amazing Japanese restaurants. Doko can absolutely compete. The interior is stunning. Bottom line, if you are looking for something unique in Houston, I would highly recommend Doko.

Cathy N.

Yelp
The vibe is what you would expect with a restaurant located in Autry Park, trendy and stylish yet cozy. We sat at the sushi bar where they have loveseat benches which made it more of an intimate feel for date nights. We ordered both from the a la carte and tasting menu which I highly recommend, so you try a bit of everything they have to offer. The sushi was fresh and all plates were usually appealing. The drinks were good as well. We would definitely come back.

Yelp
Had lunch here, not a fan of sushi in general, but the food was outstanding. I loved the decor, the service was second to none, every dish was fresh and exquisitely tasty. Can thoroughly recommend.

Abire R.

Yelp
Food was exceptional and so was the service and manager. Will definitely be my new favorite spot .

Jessica G.

Yelp
Aiko sucks, so glad this place gets it right! Unlike most sushi bars in Houston that serve saki offered at HEB, this place has plenty of good saki options including decent Nigori. Been 4x and service can be uneven, however it's never bad. Can be way too loud at times, but Sunday Night is always empty - or anytime after 8:30 - (btw it's Houston large city by map, but still a fly over state!! ) LOL

Julia S.

Yelp
Good: Most of the staff, very friendly and accommodating Clean, seating was cozy in a corner Not so much: Fish, 7/10 freshness Loud, very loud Valet, paid cash was still charged a "tech fee" (found out later) Almost $200 for not much food, even as sushi goes Having to keep asking for drink refills

Christian M.

Yelp
Restaurant was amazing! The service was the most memorable part, that's huge concerning the food was incredible. My new favorite sushi restaurant in Houston!

Joelle S.

Yelp
Everything was amazing! We walked in to this restaurant with no reservation on a Saturday and the manager was very accommodating and made away to sit us immediately. Food was excellent and our server recommended the best options. It is such a tiny but spectacular hole in the wall. Will return when I'm visiting again!

Allie K.

Yelp
I am surprised by the less than five star reviews. We had an incredible experience. Chose the tasting menu because it was our first time. The crudos and nigiri were definitely some of the best I've ever had. Highly recommend the Maguro crudo and the Hamachi crudo. For nigiri we loved the otoro, shima aji, and kinmedai. Some of the nigiri was on special for the night. The wagyu toast was also memorable. The service was also wonderful. Can't wait to come back!!

We decided last-minute to go to Doko for a Sunday evening meal. We had a fantastic experience overall. The space is beautifully minimalist--warm and welcoming but also sophisticated. My husband and I both got the 6-course tasting menu, figuring it would give us a sense of the restaurant's best dishes. The charred shishito peppers (1st course) came with a caramelized sauce with a hint of salty and sweet and topped with bonito flakes. We loved them. The second course was a chilled crudo of thinly sliced tuna, and it was delicious as well. The four pieces of nigiri (third course) was the standout course. Each of the four different pieces was thoughtfully constructed and dressed. Absolutely no need for wasabi or soy sauce here. The fish was incredibly fresh. We were also impressed by the perfect sushi rice, something many sushi restaurants don't pay attention to. The fourth course was a fried rice dish topped with an egg with an amazingly orange yolk. A perfect warm complement to the cold dishes that came before. The A5 waygu toast (5th course) had a generous portion of tender beef on a flavorful crunchy toast. Really, this kitchen pays a lot of attention to texture. That's one of the things we noticed in every course. The 6th course was a simple sushi roll with hamachi and cucumber. Again, the textures were perfect, and it was a nice, clean ending to the meal. We decided to add the Basque cheesecake on to the end as a dessert, and we're glad we did. It's not a dessert we'd expect to see at a Japanese restaurant, but it was the perfect end to a delicious meal--Creamy and cool and a nice blend of sweet and tangy. The tasting menu was $75 per person, which we feel is very reasonable given the quality of ingredients and the skill and care evident in every course. The meal moved at a nice pace except for one small hiccup where our 5th course arrived while we were still eating the 4th. No big deal at all, and we'd rather have that than have to wait too long between courses. We are excited to add Doko into our regular restaurant rotation. We will definitely be back!
