The Best Italian Bakeries for Late-Night Pastries in Rome | Eater

"A tiny, basement bakery near the Vatican known for indulgent filled doughnuts — especially the bomba (deep-fried and custard-filled) and the pesca, an over-the-top, boozy cream-filled pastry crafted and colored to resemble a pink peach. The minuscule space is packed wall-to-wall with pastries, allowing customers to survey the full selection while waiting in a tight queue; the emphasis is on rich, messy, late-night treats best paired with a strong espresso." - Lara Gilmour

This bakery has quite a few things going for it. Taste, price, friendliness, and options. I just happened upon it when walking towards the metro station. I was so glad I did. $.80 for a croissant with chocolate is a bargain. And a cappuccino will only set you back $1.40. Those are not typically prices you find in a Roman bakery. The chocolate chip ball was something my family went back for more of. The croissant with Nutella is loaded with Nutella And my personal favorite was the strawberry cake. A light fluffy strawberry cream sandwiched in between two layers of cake. And then the staff is super friendly. The second time I went in, one of the workers literally said to me, “you can ask me about any of the things we have for sale.” A gem by the Vatican.

This is still an amazing place. We purchased desserts from here two years ago and had to go again this year. We were initially confused about the location but found out that they had moved. All of the desserts we purchased on two different days were all good. If we come back to Rome again we will come back.

Google
An amazing and authentic Italian place. Great place to have breakfast, they have a lot of sweet options that will make it impossible to choose from, and all of them are good. There’s also a selection of salty food in case you wanna grab lunch or do an Aperitivo. The staff is really quick and kind, specially Sabrina, she treated us very well and we enjoyed our time here a lot. Be careful with the pigeons surrounding the area though, they will try to eat your food.

Google
the best coffee and pastry shop in Roma ,away from touristic traps and with prices for the locals and neighbourhood..great coffee , tasteful and everything we bought for breakfast was delicious...too pity that we discovered this little gem on our last day in Roma...

Great options for breakfast and very nice staff who speak good english, the place is nice to sit in and drink your morning coffee. The prices are also the best we found in rome. 100% recommended

Yelp
Unbelievably inexpensive baked goods. Quality: 5 Value: 5 Service: 4 Ambience: N/A (take-away only) This place somehow survived the pandemic, while also not raising prices. You want a delicious croissant or eclair for only one or two euros? Stop in, they're open almost all day and night.

Yelp
Enjoyed my quick lunch. Gnocchi Bolognese was absolutely amazing! Would definitely recommend this restaurant.

Yelp
Awesome little bakery shop not too far from the Vatican. Large variety of delicious goods. I'd give it 5 stars but the only knock was the location and somewhat difficult to find. But like all gems and treasures they are hidden with the joy of discovery. We got a cannoli and stuffed croissant and both were good. Highly suggest you find this place and dive in.

Yelp
Omg best cornetti ever!! 30 cent per cornetto makes it even better! Stop by here while you're near the Vatican

Yelp
This is a small place, not for sitting down (there's only 1 table for standing); it's mainly a to-go place. There's a British flag hanging over the doorway, and you can see the counter full of pastries from the sidewalk. I swear this place never closes. We passed by at various hours - 7AM, 11PM, etc, and it was always open! I would give four stars for the price alone. I ordered 3 pastries, and it was only about 4 euros. However, the issue was the taste. I ordered a spinach and ham pastry, which I did not like. It was quite bland, and I only took a couple of bites and threw away the rest. For this, I only give 3 stars. I also ordered a braid of dough and sugar, and this was good. I think the best thing I ate of the three, the palmier was the best, but it's hard to mess that up. Service was pretty fast. You may think the line is near the top of the steps, but by the time I finished ordering, it only took about 5 minutes. The lady that helped me spoke a bit of English, and that helped. I do wish their counter wasn't so tall though, as it's difficult to hand over money and reach for the pastries. Short people problems! =D

Yelp
Are you hungry and want more just attitude Come and enjoy a fresh price of bread or sandwich with a good cup of coffee or even a hot chocolate Amazing taste and quality What's best is the friendly people behind the counter which spoke both English and Spanish I wish this bakery was in Southern California I will come here again on my next trip

Yelp
There is a cue at 5 in the morning, the rest of the city is still sleeping - but not the folks here, and not the customers in line for early breakfast. We visited this by total chance, on our way out of the city, on our last day, we just needed a croissant for the road - it was great.

Sandy V.

Yelp
I lived near this place for quite some time and let me tell you... it's the best around!! Open 24/7, cheap, delicious and always friendly staff.

Yelp
We've used the bakery now twice and really enjoyed what we got including pistachio filled croissants, marmalade filled croissants, puff pastries with apple, and palmiers. Everything was fresh and delicious. There's a long line but it moves quickly. The staff are friendly and efficient.

Yelp
We came here several years ago but it was the only bakery we visited more than once. Down a stairwell near the Ottaviano-San Pietro metro, Dolce Maniera is easy to pass by because you can't see much down the stairs and past the crowd of people that seems to be there from sunrise to sunset. We tried a couple of cookies that were absolutely delicious, I wish we would have ventured into the bread and pasteries. After 3 years Dolce Maniera is the only resturaunt I could remember by visual recognition that I had been to in Rome. Do yourself a favor and wait the five minutes in line in the cramped basement, it's well worth it.

Yelp
Hidden gem. Amazing cannoli for a great price. The best cannoli I have ever had. Highly recommend a visit to this place.

Yelp
The most amazing find! It is open 24/7, and their baked goods are delicious and very well priced. We stopped in here every day during our stay in Rome

Yelp
I was in Rome this past weekend and had to stop by this bakery THREE times- it's wonderful!! Inexpensive and absolutely delicious sweets. They are also good the next day (I had to get extra or my trip home!). It's not a bad walk from Vatican City and it's absolutely worth it. Make sure to look out for this hidden gem.

Yelp
Last night, we nearly stumbled past this basement sweet shop. Upon seeing the delicacies from the street we turned around and stopped in. I had a delicious cornetti sliced in half filled with cream and was surprised when the interior also had a touch of Nutella! Delicious and only a 1.50!

Yelp
Loved it! I visited here on a recommendation from a friend, and picked up a whole tray of pastries for less than €12. We hosted a party in our hotel room that night and still had leftovers to share the next morning. Great value, great flavor.

Yelp
Cute little bakery right next to a metro station stop in Prati, very hole in the wall/mom and pop type of place. The tiramisu here is only 2€ for a generous slice, the best price I've seen so far in Rome and very delicious!! The four stars are mainly for the tiramisu. Their other pastries are very fairly priced as well, at only 0.30-0.50€ for a croissant. I've had the cream filled and the white chocolate filled croissant, both fillings were delicious but I wish there had been more in the croissant. My housemates have tried other pastries from there as well and said they were good. I tried the cannoli once and I wouldn't recommend that though, the shell was hard and the filling tasted off. Also open 24 hours so very convenient!

Melissa R.

Yelp
I was craving a doughnut so I came here and left so satisfied! It was the most delicious doughnut I've had. Tastes really homemade and was so fresh. Cute little place in Prati to go to for treats. It's gotten packed each time I've been, so I can tell it's pretty popular among locals.

Yelp
Props to the amazing women who work the counter at this fast-paced bakery. The pastries here are plentiful, affordable, and delicious, but we especially loved our interactions with the counter staff here during our week in Rome.

Danielle G.

Yelp
Their Cannolis were AMAZING!! I recommend 100%. It's hidden, you need to walk down stairs, but it's definitely worth the walk!

Yelp
Not too far from Vatican City and the Ottaviano Metro Stop, this place is a MUST! Fresh, delicious, pastries, doughnuts, you name it. And RIDICULOUSLY CHEAP! This is probably my favorite pasticceria in Rome .

Andrea M.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this underground bakery and went back every day until I left Rome. On my last day I couldn't help but ask for one of everything. It was all delicious and ridiculously cheap.
google avatar

Yumi S.

Yelp
The price was so reasonable and the tiramisu was one of the best I've had here in Italy. However, I would still try to find another bakery because everything else besides the tiramisu fell a little flat. Perhaps Barcelona, Venice and Florence had spoiled our tastebuds. The chocolate croissants were only .50 euros! Definitely worth trying!

Yelp
The. Best. This place is great, fresh authentic Italian pastries. Very very affordable pricing, and a huge variety in options. They offer pastries, bread, sandwiches, cakes, and a pizza-like bread. If you are in Rome, you need to go here! You know its good when everyone is a local and no one speaks English!
google avatar

Carina P.

Yelp
You have to walk downstairs into a basement to enter this amazing bakery. They have cornetto flavors, such as strawberry, that I have never seen before. I had the best cornetto stuffed with Nutella I've had in my entire stay in Italy from here. You can't sit down inside, there is only one table to stand at. So, I highly suggest getting the Nutella stuffed cornettos and heating them up at home. I ate 3 by myself. I also ordered two Canolis. Another plus- it's cheap!! For three cornettos, two Canoli, and one cappuccino, it cost €4.20!

Yelp
An institution in the Prati area, this 24 hours bakery has a wide selection of croissants, pastry, cakes, but also sandwiches and pizza. Eat on the spot, take away, or have it delivered for parties and events.

Yelp
Delicious bakery & very cheap! Not far from vatican city. Very authentic Italian desserts. I got tiramisu, cannoli, and a donut for €3.50, at most places just a cannoli is €3.50. I would recommend. I'm getting a pastry from here for breakfast now because of the great experience! I wish I was staying in Rome longer (only 2 nights) so I could have more.

Sam R.

Yelp
Delicious bakery!! Cream puffs and canoli were amazing! I regret that my boyfriend and I were only in Rome for two days, because I'd definitely go back to this place! What a gem!

Yelp
What a fabulous alternative to the regular hotel breakfast. The entrance is small but there's usually a gathering of locals at the door. Very tempting range of cakes and pastries that are not sickly sweet or excessively decorated. The strawberry napolean, chocolate bombolini and cream cornetto - all yum. This place operates almost 24 hours per day so it's never the wrong time to visit.

Elizabeth C.

Yelp
This bakery is open 24 hours and everything in it is fabulous. We noticed that even the Roman police drop by in the early mornings.

G Y.

Yelp
It was ok, I've had better cannoli and tiramisu in the US. But on par with some of the restaurants in Rome and much cheaper.
