10 Portland-Area (and Road-Trip-Worthy) Drive-Ins for Beefy Burgers and Swirls of Ice Cream

"Just off I-5 near Ridgefield, Don & Jo’s has served classic burgers, fries, and shakes since 1968. Orders can be placed by phone to avoid waiting in the long drive-thru line, though the wait can be substantial regardless. Highlights include quarter-pound burgers, crinkle-cut fries, and thick shakes; a long list of milkshake flavors includes Reese’s, root beer, pineapple, and butterscotch, with the option to make any shake a malt. Dine inside or use the drive-thru." - Rachel Pinsky, Eater Staff

Found myself really enjoying this place. Got that small town feel and the taste too. I’ll definitely be back to get more but so very happy with the Id and can’t wait to eat here again!

I found myself near the fairgrounds on national cheeseburger day and stopped at Don & Jo's for a cheeseburger combo meal with a chocolate shake. It was our first time, but I love to try small local diners. We phoned our order ahead and everything worked well. The service was swift, the staff kind, and it was a good value at $10 for the combo. But the food was average. The medium sized shake was larger than expected, but the straw provided fell ... well ... short. The shake's flavor was unremarkable. I apologize to the cheeseburgers of the nation for not respecting them properly on national cheeseburger day.

This place used to be good except apparently they don't update their website it says a single cheeseburger is $4.75 I added bacon and apparently the total is now $11.80 it's not like their burgers are that good it's basically a Carl's Jr burger except Carl's Jr is better and cheaper. And in my picture does that burger look worth $11.80 I think not

Friendly great employees, the burger very tasty, milk shakes very tasty like I remember back in the day a real milk shake I would go there just for that alone, plus a variety of flavors for everyone. Best burgers and shakes including their fries. Not like fast food chains. Worth the drive there. Recommend this place to everyone including your burger judge's. Go visit this place, they even use the burger sleeve to catch juices. Enjoy!! You will be glad you did.

Great little hamburger shack with wonderful service! You aren't going here for the ambiance, you are stopping by for a burger and fries or maybe a basket of chicken strips. The chicken strips were very tasty and the girls behind the counter were very friendly. We definitely recommend this spot!!!

Nothing fancy, but the food is great. That milkshake was so good! Very efficient and friendly staff. They even have a sweet young girl who comes out to the customers in the drive-through to take orders which really streamlines the wait!

Edit: 7/27 went and the prices had been raised, which I am understanding with even if they are pretty much what I can spend at a fairly decent sit-down restaurant. It was the fact the milkshake was terrible (unmixed and just tons and tons of peanut butter after paying the new upcharge for cookies and cream that I couldn't taste) and the burger was meh. The quality went down and the prices went up. I won't be going back. Previous review: I have only tried their burger once, which was ok but not mind blowing. I usually go for their milkshakes, which are thick and chunky. A solid drive thru.

SerpAPI
terrible. asked for no pickles and they put so many on my burger and i tipped them A LOT. got food for me and friends and my order was the only one that was made wrong. on top of that on my receipt i got the same combo as a friend but it was rang up with up charges and it did not on my friends order. very disappointing i used to love this place but its going downhill. last time i TIP there again.

Yelp
Boy I tell you what, this little drive in is full of surprises. It's a charming little drive in with both indoor and outdoor seating. This team takes pride in what they do. From keeping things clean to making very delicious food. Today we had the double cheeseburger combo with fries and the grilled ham and cheese combo with fries. Everything came out hot and fresh and full of flavor. We even splurged on the onion rings. They were home made and delicious. This eatery even has a speedy drive thru. What really won us over if how this group, dare I even say family really turned out the service. From taking our order and being so accommodating to special request, to being one of the few remaining places that still cleans up after you. That's right! You can leave everything there. I really recommend this place right off i5 near Ridgefield and Battle Ground. It's worth the drive.

Yelp
Stopped in at Don & Jo's Drive-in will passing through Ridgefield, Washington. It is a very unassuming building that probably wouldn't catch your eye. It is a very simple menu of combos of a drink and fries with choice of cheeseburger, double cheeseburger, chicken burger, fish burger, and ham & Cheese sandwich. They have a few other things like onion rings, milkshakes, and chicken tenders, but that's about it. All said, if you show up expecting a decent classic burger, then you will be satisfied with your food. I do suggest adding bacon to your burger as it's well fried. To be fair... the fries could be crispier. The "drive-in" is more of a drive thru that doesn't have an order box, but rather you order when you get to the window and wait for them to prepare it. Unless, of course, they get a long line, then they will send a worker out to collect your order and payment to move things along. Do not expect your food to come out quickly - this is not a fast good spot.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing burgers and ice cream! The line was 5 cars deep but only took 20-minutes. Great service too! Been back twice.

Yelp
We were out on a Saturday and needed to grab a bite. This is not where we intended to go but it was open when our other place fell through. It was not too busy and our order was taken and filled quickly. They have set combos that cannot be altered. We wanted to try the onion rings and had to order separately. Order was severed quickly - good tasting burger but lots of catsup and not the diced raw onions requested. Fries were tasty and onion rings were also good - just a little overdone. Ultimately this place reminded me of growing up with this type of place in my own hometown and it's so good to see these are still out there. Give it a try!

Yelp
Darn, I was hoping for better. The service here was a little lacking... they made my food fast enough, but ordering was a struggle. Instead of saying what I didn't want on the burger, I listed the toppings I did want, it threw them for a loop. Such an awkward interaction. My food was ready fairly quick. The burger patties were overcooked. They were dry and fairly tasteless. There was a good amount of lettuce, but it was the heel, so I pulled most of it out. The French fries were delicious! Cooked well and just the right amount of salt for my taste! Next time I'll try a shake. Decent service, decent food for the price.

Yelp
Always good burgers, onion rings are tasty, and the milkshakes are delicious. I love the black raspberry milkshake. Staff is friendly and service is quick. You will not be disappointed!
google avatar

Yelp
I had been coming here since I was 4yo that's over 35+ years. Only came for the soft serve vanilla ice cream on a cone. 5 stars for this place love the ice cream and especially the chocolate peanut butter shake!
google avatar

Jeanie B.

Yelp
Burgers, and shakes are amazing! Staff are always friendly and provide great service. Lines are usually long at peak times but you won't be disappointed. This is made to order and takes time be patient. It's not a McDonald's so don't have that expectation.
google avatar

Lynne C.

Yelp
This is an old school hamburger joint and every single thing is delicious if that's what you're looking for. Call ahead for daily specials. The line gets long but they come out and take orders. I really love their food.
google avatar

Mitch M.

Yelp
Saw the super high ratings and had to check it out. Doesn't look super appealing BUT the food was pretty good. It's your basic hamburger and fries with a few other items. The burger wasn't bad at all. Line was 2 cars deep but didn't sit very long. Overall I'm glad I stopped by.
google avatar

Brian W.

Yelp
Classic drive in food! Service is fast and friendly. You really feel like they have been making great food since the 1960's
google avatar

Sandra L.

Yelp
Call ahead!!! The line is long plan at least a 35 minute wait. I thought maybe the line was long because the burgers are soooo good! We ordered a double cheese burger and a JR cheese burger, no sides no drinks. The burgers are mediaquroe at best. The tomatoes were mushy and the lettuce was wilted, yellow and too much of it. I am sure the person making the burger had to notice the lettuce was not fresh. The meat was nothing special and kind of dry. Anyway it's not worth the wait.I gave it 3 stars because the staff was nice.
google avatar

Shelby D.

Yelp
Average and expensive. You also might be waiting. Very diner feel and small. The food is good but not great. Drive thru only in my opinion. THEY ALSO DONT HAVE PRICES ON THEIR DRIVE THRU BOARD.
google avatar

Lori H.

Yelp
Stopped for lunch on a Saturday around noon. Drive-thru line was pretty long, but to help speed things up, they had someone taking orders on foot as well. The line moved quicker than I thought it would. Service was friendly and helpful. We ended up ordering two bacon double cheeseburgers, a medium fry, medium tator tots and a medium vanilla shake. Total was $29.75, $.50 of which was a fee for using a credit card. I thought the prices and quality of food matched that of most drive-in diners. It actually reminded me of the Burger Bar we enjoy in Kalama, although the service here is much more friendly. The burgers were absolutely delicious! Cooked perfectly with just the right amount of condiments. The fries and tots were good too, surprisingly not greasy at all. The vanilla shake had a nice vanilla flavor, almost tasted a little malty. It was nice and thick as well. Overall a wonderful first experience here. We'll definitely be back!

Allison A.

Yelp
The burger was exactly what I could've wanted in a drive in burger joint. Haven't tried the French fries yet..about to! Yum! Just ate one. Crinkly cut-my favorite.

Yelp
This restaurant is the quintessential mom and pop burger joint. The interior brings me comfort, as it reminds me of a simpler time. Proudly displayed inside is a banner of a man and woman, with text describing 40 years of service. The woman in the photo, who I presume is the owner, took my order. She was very kind and helped me through the process as she could tell it was my first time there. As I sat down to eat my food old memories fulfilled my mind. The food was delicious and it was apparent that they had been making this food for the last 40 years. They mastered the simple burger and fries. The only negative about Don and Jo's is that they are extremely popular and there is sometimes a wait. In my opinion, a wait worth waiting.

Karen S.

Yelp
I have only gone through the drive thru. I usually dont call first - I should but I dont. You need to be patient, food is cooked to order. Delicious, hot and as you ordered it. A great find!
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent all around, we really enjoyed the onion rings. Anytime you can support a family owned business you should definitely do so.

Yelp
Like walking back in time when food was good, simple and the staff was friendly. We arrived right before closing and the staff was so kind. Great selection of shakes. My daughter's been craving peanut butter shakes and this place hit the spot with a really thick shake. Drive thru. Don't believe inside has seating available. Service was quick and easy. Recommend wider straws, otherwise perfect!

Yelp
Came here for my first time on a cloudy and warm Friday afternoon with a buddy. The lot is relatively small and the doors were closed, but they were coming out and taking orders as the drive thru line got longer. Was really kind of them! I parked and waited for my buddy to arrive. I caught the lady taking orders and anted up super quick. My buddy showed up and we got our orders very quick (within 5mins of ordering). Got a burger, crinkle fries, and a toffee milkshake. I was confused on the milkshake flavors as they're not posted on the main sign, only taped onto the drive thru window. I asked the lady who took my order if they had toffee or Heath or something and she said "yeah" which I was confused by. When I got my milkshake I realized toffee is the liquid flavor (like Torani liquid flavor) where Heath would have been more like a Blizzard - dang it. I hit a pocket of unblended toffee syrup, hoo wee, that woke me up! Burger: Was a flat griddled burger on a store bought bun. Was good, just not exceptional for the price. Crinkle fries: Bag fries, hot and fast, but just ok. Milkshake: Here's where my stars get lost. -1 star for not having the milkshake menu at the wooden menu board, -1 star for a little attitude on the toffee/Heath question. I genuinely understand not having the time to go through the pretty large selection of flavors, however, I wouldn't have asked it it was posted. ;) The mouthful of toffee syrup was off putting, but accident happen! Overall the food was ok, but for the price there's other burger joints in the area serving up killer flavors.

Yelp
We were just looking for a little snack so we decided on fries, tater tots and milkshakes! So good! It's a really cute little spot with a drive thru but be warned, the drive thru can take some time as they only have 1 window for order and pickup. It Didn't take too long but when you have a few cars ahead it can add up. Banana chocolate milkshake was !

Michael B.

Yelp
Awesome, Got a great burger from here, doesn't look like much of a building from the outside, but I will be back.
google avatar

Erika S.

Yelp
good single cheeseburger with fries - quick and easy!! service and ambiance were average - what's expected from a quick place like this.

Charlie P.

Yelp
It's a great little mom and pop, burger shop, when I want a burger, I go to a Don & Jo's! The orders are made as they are ordered so sometimes there is a little wait, but, I like to think that it is worth it, because I'm telling you these burgers are fire! I heavily enjoy the coffee milkshake. I always get a coffee, milkshake and a burger with grilled onions. I'm telling you if you're reading this, check it out they are so good, maybe that's why they've been open for so long! I've read other reviews on this place from a bunch of sticklers. You can't please anybody these days. Like who cares if they put too much ketchup or mayonnaise on your burger, nobody enjoys a super dry burger, eat it, it's a burger. I love this place check it out.
google avatar

Tiffany R.

Yelp
I wanted to like this place I really did but the prices don't match the quality of the food. :( The milk shakes are delicious This is my experience: Combo #1 $10 Combo #2 $11-12? Upgrade milkshakes Instead of drinks: $8.50???!? Extra charge for using a card .50 Tax Total : $32 It's not worth $32 dollars It was good but not $32 worth of you know what I mean. But hey support local business but this was a little too fancy when I could of gone down the street and supported another local business that's not taking advantage of customers. They gave ya one napkin, those super cheap ones, and the burgers were wrapped in a hot dog wrap? Burgers were ok Fries soggy and mehh I'd just order milkshakes. The peanut butter one was delicious.
google avatar

Yelp
An amazing burger! Highly recommend, every time I visit the burger is always on point 5/5

Yelp
Leaving 4 stars because over all I left feeling full and satisfied, and I don't want to hurt this business in any way leaving less, if I was completely honest I'd say maybe 3-3.5 stars. The milkshakes are a must try, I got the strawberry and banana milkshake and it was definitely the most enjoyable thing I got. The burger had to much mayo and ketchup, i tried to get some of it off and ended up spilling all the burger sauce mix all over my work cloths, wasn't to bad and it was my work cloths so no biggy. Fries were pretty good as well, the burger I didn't really like. I'll definitely come here again for the milkshakes. Also I think it was way way to overpriced. With a tip, paid a little over 20$ I believe, for 20oz milkshakes, burger, and fries. Overall it's worth trying but I'd be specific with how you want the burger, maybe easy on mayo and ketchup or non at all
google avatar

Ele P.

Yelp
The best. Every time. Long time customer and always recommend except then I know there will be a line. But. It's worth it. I promise
google avatar

Allyssia L.

Yelp
Love the made to order food. Burgers are yummy and it gives Mom and Pop.. This is not a quick stop restaurant have time alloted for that. Our faves are burgers, chicken tenders and apple juice.

Christopher P.

Yelp
Being new to the area, I was floored by the service and the quality of the food. The long line out front tells you they are doing good business. Great tasting burgers and some of the best soft serve on the west coast. They give Creamland in Erie, Pa some competition.
google avatar

Joseph J.

Yelp
No salt. They don't use salt. On anything. Plain burger, no seasoning. Fries, no salt. I waited 25 minutes at the window for the most bland food. The buns were dried out too.

D L.

Yelp
Ordered tator tots and a chocolate milkshake. Nice counter encounter and great food.
google avatar

Marybeth S.

Yelp
I think the burgers and grilled cheese are great! We have eaten in and done takeout. Fries are food as well. I'm not a big milkshake fan, but my daughter is andoves theirs. Milkshake prices are steep though.
google avatar

Sebastian K.

Yelp
I was incredibly disappointed by my dining experience here the other day. It's unfortunate too, because I've driven by this drive-in so many times and it looked cute, and I've had a lot of luck with local places like this. I ordered a single cheeseburger and a hot dog, while my wife got the beef vegetable soup. A couple of minutes later, the lady that took my order said she rang up my order as a hamburger and I have to pay seventy five cents extra for cheese. I don't have enough change, and don't want to use my card because they charge fifty cents to do so (seriously, in 2019?) so I take the hamburger begrudgingly. My wife reported that the soup tasted like Dinty Moore with ketchup added to it. My hamburger was cooked to the consistency of shoe leather, and the hot dog was sub-gas station quality. Actually, I could have gone next door to the service station and retrieved a better quality dog. The only good thing about this meal was that it was cheap, $12 for everything we got. If I were you, I'd recommend passing on this place and just heading to Ilani for Smashburger.
google avatar

Jerad G.

Yelp
If for some strange reason you find yourself going to or leaving battleground, Washington. I highly recommend stopping at Don & Jo's drive in. It's the quaint little building right before the i5 freeway. This place isn't big. The dining area literally makes up only a third of the building. But it is well decorated and maintained. The sales tax is incorporated into the menu so when you get your total. There is no surprises. This is rare here in Washington. The menu is small, but packed with all the classic drive in foods. They even have a clam strips basket. The burger combo I got was absolutely divine. It was a double with all the standard fare and Kringle cut fries. The burger It self definitely puts all the fast food joints in town to shame. I hope you will read this review and give this place a chance. You will not regret it.
google avatar

Gabriel A.

Yelp
Haven't tried it yet but heard good things. Love to good there soon when I can. But I have heard nice things about the place
google avatar

Melody M.

Yelp
Great burgers, shakes, classic American fare. Service is always friendly. Both dine in and drive thru are great quality. This is a classic local restaurant that I hope never goes out of business. It has that small town USA feel. One of my favorites!
google avatar

Marilyn V.

Yelp
I saw this nice small restaurant and it reminded me of a restaurant back home. I had to stop the food was great and the staff was amazing. I can't remember her name but she was very nice. I recommend this place 100%
google avatar

Rick H.

Yelp
If you are looking for the best Americana food out there this should be a definite stop!
google avatar

Julian M.

Yelp
Stealing from customers is an automatic zero stars. Ok- stealing is bit of a strong word, but I did drive a longer distance to treat my family to an old school hamburger meal with milkshakes. They left out my meal altogether, so while my family ate hamburgers, I had leftovers from the fridge. Now, mistakes happen, so after dinner, I called them about the situation. They said I could come back for it, but it's way too far and dinner was over. I just wanted to be credited back for what the left out, but they declined. So, they lost my business for ripping me off. Why wouldn't you give me back the money!?

Jayden P.

Yelp
First I wanna give props to the staff for being very friendly, however It is unfathomable how horribly slow the service was when i ordered two combos. When I arrived the girl outside was quick to take my order but I was then met with a 45 minute wait time for only three cars in front of me. Not only the wait time was bad, but the food was so fucking mid. My fries were mushy and lukewarm when I GOT them, and my chicken sandwich was a thin slab of frozen chicken and a minimal amount of lettuce. I paid $15.00 FOR CHICKEN AND LETTUCE! I should have went to goddamn Popeyes and got a fat chicken sandwich for $5. If the food was worth the $31 I paid for two items I wouldn't even make this review but the food was overpriced, and below average by a mile, and wait time was abismal. I miss when the food was actually decent for the price you pay, get some new cooks at the bare minimum, make the wait worth it.

Andy B.

Yelp
Great food. Take a minute but good food usually does. Can't beat the burgers and onion rings!

J R.

Yelp
Would recommend calling ahead to order or be prepared for a long wait for drive thru! Food was decent, burgers need salt and they put the American cheese in between the burger patties do it just ends up melted to the wrapping; also if you want ketchup ask for extra! They literally gave us 2 packets for 2 double cheese burgers and an order of tots. Tots were crispy and burger patties were fresh, would probably come back but as an order ahead as we waited for 30 minutes on a weekday around 1:30pm
google avatar

Hugh J.

Yelp
Wound up here because Pacific NW Best Fish closed early. Pulled into drive-thru and figured it was going to be a lengthy wait since it had 4 cars ahead of me. Young lady came out to take our order which seemed to speed the process up. 2 cheeseburgers, 1 double, 2 fries and 2 drinks $31. Handed the young high school aged employee $41 and I thought her head was going to explode trying to figure out the change. Wound up taking the dollar bill back because she said she already entered $40 and apparently giving me $9 back was easier than a $10 bill. Cheeseburgers were good but wrapper was stuck to cheese and had to peel it off. I love krinkle cut fries but these were pretty soggy, I prefer them krispier...you know like cooked. All in all not a bad meal, would return for the cheeseburgers and ask for the fries to be crispier.
google avatar

Gary B.

Yelp
if your looking for a milkshake or ice cream this place is fine. Food wise its pretty sub par and what's unfortunate is that it would not take much for this place to be a 4-5 star. What would help? Personality of the employees....not that great. Burgers are a bit dry and the last 5x I have been there I've experience 4 mistakes on the order - you will find this is quite common in the reviews. Im all about shopping local and supporting local businesses but not at the expense of quality. This is an old school, small town establishment that just might be killing itself with the small details. For the reviewer who said its the best burger in clark county he clearly has not been to Killer Burger. This is not even remotely close to a good burger. Its acceptable, nothing more.
google avatar

Bryan V.

Yelp
Had lunch there today the cheese burger was good 6 out of 10 I asked for the fries the be crispy but they were not the drive thru is the only thing open not sure why when you can have guest inside tool 20 minutes to get to the window
google avatar

Neal P.

Yelp
Last 3 times I went here, they messed up my order. The first time, I asked for ranch and when I got home, no ranch. 2nd time they completely forgot my burger (how does a burger place forget the burger??). 3rd time they forgot my corndog. I really like their food but its time to find a new burger place. If you must eat here though, ALWAYS CHECK YOUR BAG BEFORE YOU LEAVE. They literally cannot get an order right.
google avatar

Lilly M.

Yelp
4 Stars for having the absolute crispiest and tastiest Crinkle Cut Fry's I have EVER eaten. I've never liked fry's as the majority I've eaten are dry and tasteless and I've consumed my fair share of them. Burgers on the other hand could have a bigger Beef Pattie as the ratio of pattie to bun and veg is not an enjoyable balance in my opinion. Vanilla Malt Shake is a winner as well, as is all their Shakes This is just my opinion. Yum!

Kindra Y.

Yelp
Yum! Want a good burger and fries that aren't saturated in grease? You've found the place! One of our go-to's for takeout.
