"You might assume that a restaurant named Don Pisto’s in North Beach is another red-checkered tablecloth establishment dishing out mediocre penne à la vodka and garlic knots. The Don! But you would be wrong: the Don of Don Pisto’s is a señor, and he is throwing a fiesta we regularly and enthusiastically attend. Tucked away in an unmarked brick space, Don Pisto’s is our go-to spot for a party vibe and some dressed up Mexican food that doesn’t feel pretentious. Truffle-dusted fennel fronds should stay out of taco shells - that’s where we store the pork. Don Pisto’s is a great experience once you show up - the lack of a sign makes it feel like a secret, and while you wait for a table, a man with a clipboard simultaneously serving as the host/bouncer hands out drink tickets like it’s ’05 Cabo Spring Break. Upstairs, you’ll find a bustling, but civilized dining room, while downstairs the lights go down and the volume goes up. It’s essentially like attending numerous bachelorette parties simultaneously As for food? Oh, the tacos. These things are good - and the rest of the menu is as well. We recommend starting with tacos and seafood starters, and following up with the pollo asado. If you’re going for a more casual situation, you can hit up the sister taco shop Pisto’s down the block, where the emphasis is more street-food/to-go. Either way you can’t lose. Food Rundown Chips & Guac & Salsa Chips are hearty and home-made. We’re fans. The guacamole is basically just a mashed up avocado that spices, onions and cilantro forgot. We too, have two thumbs and access to mashing instruments. The salsa, on the other hand, is killer. Also chips and salsa are free. What is the world we live in where this is a point of note? Not a world we want to live in, so thank you DP for fighting the good fight. Mexican Sashimi This is a big, pretty plate of salmon, nicely garnished and super-fresh. Not super Mexican but super good. Calamari Grilled with a nice citrus tang. They don’t scrimp on the tentacle pieces, so if that’s your jam, this is for you. Hamburguesa A lot of people call this dude incredible. It’s fine. It’s a hamburger wearing a guacamole toupee - with some bacon and onions in the mix. You’re at a Mexican restaurant, your digestive tract will accept non-burger sustenance for at least one meal. Promise. Tacos Al pastor, chicken and carnitas are A plus. The tortillas are so good you really can’t go wrong though. Pollo Asado Bold statement: this is one of the best Mexican chicken dishes we’ve had. The drunken salsa is insane as are the corn tortillas. Don’t miss this. Brunch If you don’t think of Mexican when it comes to a mid-morning meal, it’s time to rethink that. Pork tamales that involve poached eggs are a breakfast revolution. Join the cause. Huevos rancheros are another stand-out. Wash it all down with the bottomless not-too-sweet sangria and you’re good to go. Adios." - Taylor Abrams

"Known for its bottomless brunch, Puerto Nuevo lobster, and beef shank birria, North Beach restaurant Don Pisto’s will close permanently as of Friday, June 23, after 14 years, the restaurant announced via Instagram. It won’t be the final chapter for Don Pisto’s, however, as the post also mentions that the restaurant will be reopening in Baja California in 16 months." - Dianne de Guzman

Came here for my birthday and really enjoyed the experience! We got our own table in the back of the dining hall so it felt really like exclusive seating - and when you show up they always have complimentary chips and salsa which is super nice. Good: I enjoyed the margaritas here a lot and they were almost non-alcoholic tasting so it was a great taste. I loved the tacos here - the fish taco was the clear standpoint - a great mix of savory and just the right amount of crunch. Bad: I thought that the huevos rancheros weren't that special - it was a little dry actually. There was also a beef stew that I felt was a bit too spicy. Overall a fun birthday brunch experience, maybe next time I'll try the bottomless experience.

Great vibe in North Beach and the place got packed after we sat down later on, even on a Monday night. Pictured are their fish tacos (2 pieces, I only took a picture of one). They also serve some pretty good drinks. I wish they had a happy hour menu but other than that, this place is a great place to go to!

I have not been to Mexico City, but this was the best al pastor taco that I have ever eaten. The carnitas burrito was also delicious. The guac was smooth and tasty. Chips had heft to them. This place earned its reputation.

If you love authentic Mexican cuisine food, you gotta come here! Searched Mexican restaurants on Yelp and came across Don Pistos, the name of the business caught my attention. Yelp had good reviews so we thought to give it a try. Upon arrival we were greeted by young lady (didn't get her name) who was very friendly and sat us right away. As she gave us our menus she told us their food and drink recommendations. We ordered a michelada, tortilla soup, shrimp tacos and quesa birria tacos. All so delish and fresh!

The restaurant is very cozy and warm. Staff was friendly and the service was good and pretty fast. Overall the Mexican Tacos were tasty and one order which brings 2, was enough to get full. Only negative is that for you can definitely find cheaper mexican food around California however since this specific restaurant is in the middle of San Francisco the price is about right.

My brother loves this place and always brings me here when I’m visiting. He also brings friends here all the time because he loves it! They have some pretty great Mexican food. Visiting from Texas and being Mexican, this isn’t the easiest thing to find in California! Food: To start off, the chips and salsa are some of the best I’ve had. For breakfast/brunch, we usually get the ceviche and the breakfast burrito with chorizo, eggs, rice, beans, and cheese. For dinner we get the sashimi (not Mexican, I know) and the tamales! They are the bomb! I haven’t had anything bad here so just give it all a try and I’m sure it’ll s be delicious! Drinks: they’ve got a nice little selection of tequilas and even brought out a birthday shot with a candle to get things going. Loved that! I was not a fan of the horchata drink but everything was pretty tasty. Service: service was a little slow but overall the food was great and we didn’t need much so it didn’t bother us too much.

An authentic & quality modern Mexican restaurant. Only distinguishable by it three red lights and Street number this great restaurant could be easily missed. The food is well priced, very tasty and the staff were all fantastic making for a great night.

Went for: Dinner with 6 person group of colleagues Takeaways: Food was phenomenal. NO Tequila. Ambiance can improve. Food: Calimari - really good!! Loved that it was grilled. Mussels & chrizo - Mussels:Chorizo ratio way off (in favor of mussels. Sauce is amazing, though. Ceviche - 10/10. Just small portion Guac - good not great. Didn’t “wow” me Tacos - all were great (chicken, fish, veggie) Ambiance: We had space, which I love; but, was hoping for music and cultural decor.
